This is not meant to flame you...only to educate you. Read and follow directions. Its all right there. Flashing a custom recovery is very commonplace in the world of modding. Each device will have their own methods and instructions posted in their respective subforums. Reading is your friend...

Telus Model - SGH-i317M

i got pretty good at flashing stuff for my galaxy nexus, but now as a note II owner I feel like a total noob.
i have the Telus Model - SGH-i317M. is that the same model for At&T ... all At&T flashing/rooting guides would work for me?
can I flash the international firmware? by doing so, will that mean I get official samsung updates faster?
cheers,

So if I follow AT&T model stuff, it should be fine for my model? Wouldn't it screw up network stuff like LTE?

I would also backup your modem with twrp recovery, so if you run into problems, you can just restore. Also some roms are based on the Canadian note 2 as well.

Does the Canadian version work fine regardless if the Canadian carrier is Telus or Rogers?
Is cf-auto root a recovery tool? If so, only 1 of those 3 would be needed right.... Because no sense in 3 recovery tools? Any recommendations please which would be the best one for me?
Many thanks

Cf-auto root roots your phone, it doesn't install any recoveries. Here's the thread, just download the Canadian version and flash with Odin (yes it works with telus/bell/rogers) . http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=33854391
Then, if you want to flash custom roms then you need to install either Cwm or twrp recovery. Recommend twrp.
You can install twrp by installing goo manager via play store or download the file to flash with Odin.

After you're rooted, if you install goo manager, it can install twrp automatically. I'm guessing there must be some variance to have a Canadian version.
Just search for nandroid backup for twrp recovery which is a complete backup. Lots of guides and YouTube videos if you search for it or someone can point you to one.

No problem. Well first I would only install firmwares that are in the i317 Devs section.
To answer your question, root > install recovery >do a nandroid backup!>install custom roms
I wouldn't rush into things though before your really comfortable doing so and understand it.

Custom roms are firmwares. There are some roms that are ported from international firmwares and made to work for our version of note 2. All the compatible roms/firmwares are in the AT&T dev's section here, just make sure you read all the instructions and you can always ask them the question in they're thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1874
In any case, I would do a lot more research and reading. There are bunch of guides and tutorials.

I just started playing with the Galaxy Note 2's as well this weekend (all Rogers i317m). Rooted 5 of them, and installed custom roms on 3 of them. All in all much easier than jailbreaking iphones. That said, this forum has been a wealth of information. I've tried a few roms and really like the International Stock Rom http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2016575. I will try Clean Rom next.
This is what I've done, and it's been a snap :
1. Put your phone into Odin Download mode, and root the phone using ODIN and the cwm6-root-note2.tar file (clockworkmod-there's some youtube videos on how to do this)
2. Download the custom rom you wish to flash to your phone (eg download directory)
3. Boot your phone into CWM recovery mode
4. Make a BACKUP rom of your existing phone (good for recovery, if you didn't back up all your contacts, sms, apps, etc....this is like TIMEMACHINE and saves to your phone's CWM directory).
5. Erase / Wipe Data (this does not erase your photos/videos, just basically the OS).
6. Flash ROM from ZIP (from your download directory)
7. Erase cache
8. Reboot to your new Custom Rom!
9. If you don't like the new Custom Rom, you can always boot back into CWM and restore from the BACKUP rom.
10. I highly recommend looking into Titanium Backup and SMS Backup, as well as syncing your contacts to GMAIL.
Good luck

No prob. I have 5 Note 2's because everyone in my family has one....at my urging My wife was the first adopter, and everyone fell in love with how functional the device was. Ironically, I'm still using a company issued Iphone 4S...which I loathe.
That said, take a look at hxxp://galaxynote2root.com/galaxy-note-2-root/how-to-root-galaxy-note-2-easiest-method/

Hi there,
I'm new to this, but my question is how to I return my phone to stock, I had someone root and add a rom to it and now I have lost my lte radio..but this person tells me all is fine and that I'm completely stock and just rooted, this may be true but the phone hardly works now..
info:
telus phone Note 2
sgh-i317m
but when I check my phone know it says its a samsung sgh-i317 now instead of sgh-i317m, this have made me believe that the phone maybe was rooted with n7100 firmware.
all I want is the phone to be completely stock as if I have just pulled it out of the box
I dont want it rooted or any sort of rom, I need all stock files because I have no backup of any sort also from what I can tell I may need samsung drivers and Odin I have no idea which I need or where to acquire the correct files...
please help

I would flash the Telus stock which is root injected from this thread. You may need to set the csc to Telus. Flash with odin. You can easily remove the root if everything works.

[Q] Best way to root Galaxy Note 2?

WARNING: Android noob here.
So I've been using iPhones for 3 years and I knew I could jailbreak the phone only in one way. With Android, I found out it is different. So what's the best way to root my Galaxy Note 2?
1. With Odin and then flash with CF-Auto-Root? This won't give me custom recovery, but I know I can install GooManager from the Play Store and I could install TWRP recovery that way. As an Android beginner, I won't be needing the custom recovery right away, so I can live without it.
2. Galaxy Note 2 toolkit?
3. Download the newest version of Odin and flash with ClockworkMod recovery?
Thanks in advance!

[Q] Odin crash while flashing Note 2

I am a noob but have to start somewhere. I spent nearly 2 days reading tutorials and forums before trying to root my note 2 I317. I have never rooted or jailbroke anything before.
I am using mskips toolkit and crashed when I hit the pdf button in odin. I robooted my pc while phone said Downloading...I am trying to avoid disaster.
Not sure what would be best. Reboot options in toolkit? I would greatly appreciate any help. Thanks
If your stuck in download mode to reboot your phone just pull the battery. For rooting use chainfires method in the original development section

Thanks for the reply. This forum is really helpful. Removing the battery was the fix. I was using toolkit and did not realize i needed to update to find my build. Other than that, it was fairly easy...for a grower of grapes ; )

[SOLVED] [Q] Flashing CWM with Heimdall

As yet I've been using my Note 8.0 Wifi (N5110?) rooted but with stock firmware. However, I'd quite like to get at least a custom recovery on there so I can try some different ROMs. But first I have some questions -- sorry if they're basic but I learnt about flashing with my Nexus 4 and things don't seem nearly as simple with non Google devices...
I am aware that there's a Note 8 toolkit, but it's Windows only, as in Odin by the looks of it. I read about another flashing tool called Heimdall with Linux support. Has anyone used Heimdall with their Note 8 WiFi successfully? I'm cautious of jumping into this and destroying my expensive new tablet, so I'd really appreciate any advice.
EDIT: Flashed a recovery in download mode using heimdall without issues.

you could try framaroot (Android app available from thread here on xda), depending on your ROM version it could work (or not) - no risk, nothing to lose, and if it works - it's the fastest way of getting root

Thanks, I'd already used Framaroot and was on a stock rooted ROM. I wanted custom recovery to install a custom ROM. However, I went ahead with this using Heimdall and didn't break anything, so it's all good
EDIT: Is there some way I can now mark this thread as solved?

[Q] LORJAY589 MC2 to MK4 Knox Free Update?

Hi everybody. I have a question. so I want to install LORJAY589's update rom. and as he has been very adamant about following his instructions down to the letter. I am having a problem. he said he installed CWM through the galaxy note 2 toolkit. so that's what I wanted to do. but when I went to the thread he mentioned in note 2 original development section. i found that the link is no longer up. I saw other posters on his thread mention work around's to this problem. but again further back in his post. he said do not use other peoples work around's. he said to follow his and only his instructions to get it to work. so my question is does anyone know where I can find the galaxy note 2 toolkit he used. untill I find it I will be unable to install his update rom. thanks in advance for any help on this problem

I just wanted to say that I was curious if I could simply flash the stock deodexed MK4 4.3 ROM from my existing rooted MC2 TW ROM with TWRP recovery and so I took a chance. I had zero issues. I didn't un root etc. as was instructed . What are the reasons for returning to stock un rooted before flashing MK4? I'm currently on rooted MK4 with no issues doing it the way I mentioned. Yes I'm hard headed lol
