[Q] Kernel for overclocking Arc S to 2 GHZ on CM 10. - Xperia Arc Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My Arc S lags on CM10 and I dont wanna uninstall most apps cause I use them a lot.
Available kernels only overclock to 1.6 GHZ
The only kernel Ive seen reaching these heights is doomlords but its only for the stock roms.
Which kernel would do this?

Overclocking does not give you any performance boost.
And I strongly recommend to not overclock to such frequency, you might brick your device very easily. Permanently.

Any recommended perfomance tips then?

I didn’t realize that overclocking doesn’t provide any performance boost in Hell, but here on Earth it most certainly does, as I’ve had experience doing so from the early 90’s till today. You should limit the overclock on the Arc S to a maximum of 1.6GHz though because anything higher may lead to accelerated electromigration and shorten the lifespan of the processor, possibly drastically. Individual CPU’s may only hit 1.5 GHz reliably, others 1.7 Ghz. Also, Android is designed to use whatever memory it can, so lots of free memory is not particularly a good thing. But freezing, hibernating or Greenifying apps that aren’t needed all the time will let the system use what memory is then free more efficiently, leading to a better user experience. And I always have at least 7 widgets running, but they really do slow it down.

Same old advice:
- off mobile data when not in use.
- reduce brightness if too bright.
- turn off when not in use etc
- kill the process when not using app(Greenify) and remove recent apps (hold down home button and clear all the apps there)

How do I go about overclocking my HTC One X?

Hi all I'm fairly new to these forums, although I have been watching from afar for quite some while now!
I have been trying out custom roms and various kernels and was wondering how do I go about overclocking my device? Only reason I am asking is because I was checking out benckmark results for other devices and noticed some can be particularly high.
Any insight would be most appreciated!
I wouldnt try any overclocking on the HOX because of the heat issues. A more safe and stable way of doing it is changing the govenor of the kernel or forcing cores online. I think you can use core control (in the apps and themes section) to change core behaviour and system tuner to change govenor.

I have now installed core control. Got to admit it is nice having the option to save a bit more power. How much as an estimate do each of cores use anyway just out of interest?

you can download an app called tegrastats to find out more but all you should know is this. once you activate the corecontrol and depending what app you use you should be fine. if i was you i would also use no-frills cpu app. that way you can underclock and would save you more juice

Fantastic! Many thanks for the advice. I have now installed no-frills cpu, and started to tinker around with the settings. Could I ask as I am still fairly new to some of this, when I first went on to the settings both maximum and minimum were set to 1.5 GHz (Not sure if it was just saying this on the app or not or if these are the actual settings) but I would guess this would use a lot more power am I right?

yes you are right. put the min frequency to say 200 or 300 mhz and then press apply on boot and then reboot and you should be fine

Does anyone use SetCPU any more?

I am by no means an expert and always thought SetCPU was useful - I don't use it to overclock - just use it primarily to limit the processor when the screen is off. However, with ICS and Jelly Bean and the improvements related to it, is there still a need for SetCPU? Again, not just to overclock, etc, but to limit the processor when the screen is off to attempt to save battery. Thoughts?
I personally have felt no need for SetCPU once I upgraded from my first Android device - a MyTouch3G.
The schedulers in most custom kernels nowadays already throttle back the CPU speeds when the screen is off. As for overclocking, it IMO doesn't make any noticeable difference anymore so I don't even bother.

But, what if you don't use the scheduler in the custom rom, is SetCPU still redundant?
I use it to set the voltages. If the hotplugx worked well with it I'd use it for profiles but unfortunately it'll crash.

Tweaks & questions

Hi I'm rooted and have an unlocked bootloader (CM9 RC2 with included FXP kernel). Now I'm wondering if there's any other tweaks I can do, I've heard some people talk about superchargeV6? and SmartassV2? They're suppose to improve RAM from what I understand? When I was on android 2.3.3 games and emulators ran pretty smooth, on CM9 (ICS) they're not too bad but I've noticed a bit more lag from time to time. I'm wondering if one of those RAM enhancers would help in my case. Also, are they safe? I haven't overclocked my CPU because I heard it decreases the over all lifespan of your device. I currently have 306MB of free memory on my phones internal memory ( I still have a few apps to move over btw ) and my RAM is at 177MB free. IDK if there's anything I can do to boost internal memory but surely the RAM can be improved correct? And lastly are there any files or folders on my phones internal memory I don't need? I've noticed a slight change when using Androzip (file manager) on 2.3.3 it went from "/" to "/sdcard". Now it goes from "/" to "/mnt" to "/mnt/sdcard" why is this? Is this ok?? Just some small change I noticed ( perhaps this happened when my bootloader got unlocked? ) If someone could answer these questions and guide me in the right direction it would be much appreciated.
-Thanks

V6Supercharger is a script-based application that changes some settings in your phone, some of which tell Android how to pick which apps stay running and when to kill other services. Very useful and has just been updated to work better with Jellybean, if that's of any interest to anyone (other than me, that is).
smartassV2 is a cpu governor, and depending on which kernel you're using (FXP, Mjolnir, LuPuS), you may or may not have this option. smartassv2 is just one of the many options available, but the cpu governor doesn't affect your ram at all, it just affects how quickly or slowly your cpu will speed up and slow down, and when it decides that it needs to change speed.
As far as overclocking, yes, if you keep your phone clocked too high, it could damage your phone. However, given the lifespan of current phones (with newer, better ones released every few months), it's not likely that you'll cause drastic, irreparable damage to your phone should you overclock to, say, 1.1 or 1.2GHz. You could even use an app like SetCPU where the max speed can be changed based on what app is running, what time of day, certain activities you do, etc. Overclocking is just like anything else: All good things in moderation.

So given my situation, what specifically would you do to tweak the phones performance?

V6 supercharger is always nice. Beyond that, I don't know, I've been running ics or jellybean for a while now, I'm used to low ram.

The V6 Supercharger script just tries to use RAM more efficiently. It loads more things into RAM and prioritizes processes such as the launcher above less important processes. Most people experience more fluidity in the UI, mostly when switching tasks or returning to the home screen. Some people claim it helps gaming, though I've not experienced that. I suppose the more apps you have running, the more noticeable the effects will be

so is it worth installing? or perhaps another rom. I'm looking for an even balance between features, internal memory, ram etc. Just an over all better experience : /

[Q] Overclock with SetCPU

Hi,
Would anyone be kind enough to list a step-by-step process on how to overclock the Note 8.0 using SetCPU? I'm a new user of this app and I'm afraid I may end up doing some irreparable damage to the device.
I am also just curious to see if I can squeeze some more gaming juice from the Note 8.0.
thanks in advance.

I was going to post a link to a setCPU guide, but its no longer available
Id only push the CPU a little. In order to gain real gaming perfomance increases you need to push the GPU, but in order to do that you will need a kernel that supports it.
I only received my tablet last night and wont be rooting it until the weekend so cant say what settings ill be using yet. my aim is to attempt to overclock slightly and undervolt where I can...
You're not going to break it with SetCPU. If you overclock too much, the system will become unstable, then just back off. Also, the system will shut itself off well before any temperature possible of causing permanent damage was reached.
SetCPU has an option to create a recovery-flashable zip file, which resets the CPU settings to default. I would absolutely take this precaution, as I've had to resort to it on my old HTC Flyer tablet (became unstable, and bootlooped). As long as you select this option, you're pretty safe.
Other than that, just follow the basic rule of overclocking any computer, and push the clock up one or 2 increments at a time, then test for a few hours to see if the tablet is stable under various usage conditions. Repeat until you've either reached a desirable clock speed, or encounter instabilities.
Also, as you may already be aware, higher than "stock" CPU clock steps are normally not available unless you flash a custom kernel.
The trickster app supports GPU overclock on Civato's kernel.
If you're looking to push the GPU that's the way to go.
Thanks for the valuable inputs to all.

Does the Trickster app allow for senario clock settings. Ie. underclock the CPU on screen off or if battery is bellow a certain percentage?
I may have to switch from setCPU to it if it has the same settings and more...

[Q] Device Lag

I've some lag with my device since a while now I've did everything from mega wipe changing ROMs and changing kernels
i don't know to fix that lag !

Which Kernel are you using?
Make sure you use the recent kernel and if there is no improvements, unroot your phone and send to service people.
that's not a solution !

Do you have the same problem with completely clean install of stock rom? Did you try different modems? (remember about EFS problems), Finally, try installing stock rom but without SD Card in the slot - maybe it's a problem with the card? Anyway some more info about what kind of lag and when it happens (what are U doing when it happens?) would be helpfull if you want a solution
what i've is lag when switching between apps or pressing home button and back to home screen also we pages and apps lags
but i've changed cpu governor once to performance and the phone was smooth !

Well, performance would eat your battery quickly. What kernel are u using?
Also how big a lag are u talking about? Try TricksterMod (playstore - it's free) and observe typical cpu consumption / cpu frequency / free memory when you encounter lag (maybe using dual app view). On normal system it should be 1-2 cores active @ 400Mhz or less with 1GB free memory if you don't have some power sucking app running. Different kernels offer different governors, most responsive (as in ramping up cpu speed and thus removing lag) are Interactiveq, Pegasusq, Lulzactiveq and Devilq but aside from Interactive they are only available in custom kernels.
