I got the screen protector film replaced last night as preapplied one got scratched and dirty.
First, it was extremely hard to remove the preapplied film (guess its shatter proof).
Second, believe or not, the viewing angle and contrast on the screen seem to be a lot better with a new film.
My new one is xtreme guard clear. Especially contrast is better. Viewing angle might be mu subjective opinion.. but it feels better now. (I was skeptical and disappointed about its viewing angle, so I can tell I feel it)
Just wondering how anyone who did the same thinks.

I put on a skinomi one, and yeah, looks much better. Sony wanted me to take my device to TX (I'm in Chicago) for a $200 repair to replace that film. I told em nah, Amazon has $5 films.

I removed the OEM screen protector on my first ZL and I regretted it to no end. True I got rid of the excessive dust, which was the sole reason I did it, but in place I got a screen that became a fingerprint magnet, even with an aftermarket screen protector. The thing is, the original screen protector is oleophobic coated, where as the actual screen isn't, nor are any (as far as I know) aftermarket screen protectors.
When I got my replacement ZL...I got it in white instead of black, and surprisingly it's much, much less of a dust magnet (at least I can't see it) and so I kept the original screen protector and thus keeping the finger prints away.
Yeh it feels better when touching the original film. Qualitywise.. not sure about it(optical quality).
Compared to the new one, it looks dull , unsaturated.
(But I still miss clean look on original one. I wouldn't attempt to change if it didnt get scratched all around corners)

I would recommend something cost more than 3 bucks..
Xtreme films cost $2-3 when there is a 80% off promotion. I believe they have it once a month..

yeaa!
I removed mine too. The screen looks much better with the protector off, especially contrast.
I used a blow dryer on low to warm it up and the film just peeled off surprisingly smooth with very little residue.
I used alcohol on a cotton ball and cleaned the screen, it came out real smooth.
I'm going to keep it bare for a while and slip in my Water Field sleeve when i put it in my pocket.
I really want one of those glass screen protectors but they don't make them for the ZL.

Did you notice any difference about viewing angles and touch responsiveness, too?
I have removed my screen protector today and I, personally, like it better now. The responsives of the screen remains the same. It seems a bit more vivid now and I think the viewing angles are a little better as well.
I will update my feedback soon.
So far I recommend the removal...

Took three tries and a slight trim of the long edge, but 3 ANTI GLARE Screen LCD for Samsung Captivate Galaxy S off ebay gave me what I want: a bubble free matte screen installation. item #380262378182.
Thanks I going to order from ebay
You don't NEED a screen protector.
The Samsung Galaxy S has Gorilla Glass from Corning.
Check a torture test here (on a Dell Streak, which I also have - but it has the same glass) and tell me if you really need a lousy plastic sheet on your beautiful screen.
Check out the gorilla glass website. The got a pictireo of a gorilla with its arse up in the air kissing a pane of glass LOLS

Steinheil protectors are fantastic -- only ones I've found that don't leave smudges and fingerprints all over. (They do dull the screen a bit, but since the amoled screen is too bright to begin with, that's not a problem IMO.)

Look at it in the sun at an angle so it reflects the sun off the screen, you will see lots of micro scratches. This is on both our captivates. Sure, they're not "SCRATCHES" like the usually unsightly ones, they are just micro, or super thin.
Just because it can handle an impact doesn't mean it's scratch resistant. Personally have used the Phantom Skinz protector in the past and am currently using the Realook protector now. If you like the slight rubbery feel of the "skinz" type of protector you have plenty of options. I used the Phantom Skinz because it seemed to have the least orange peel look. After exchanging my captivate for another one (I had the random shut down issue) I used the Realooks static style screen protector. I prefer this one since it's almost nake glass feeling and I can totally say it can take a decent scratch. I got a nice dent from a fall off my desk onto a barbell that dented my chasis and also nicked the screen protector but no scratches. Best thing is you get 2 so if one gets farked you still have a spare. Best screen protector is one you will use and be happy with.
It still scratches even with the Gorilla Glass. Not big scratches, but they are visible at certain angles - it may or may not bother you.
I've used two types, SGP and Realook. Both are highly regarded, and from my experience SGP doesn't have any rainbow effect like Realook, but Realook has a much more natural feel. Both are excellent.
i took off my screen protector a couple months ago and i sometimes regret it. theres a few scratches on the screen but you cant really see them unless you hold the phone at a specific angle in the light. it doesnt really bother me that much. it is kind of annoying having to clean the fingerprints though.
I have invisishield its great only paid twenty for it with a lifetime warranty you I've had mine for about 4 months and it has yet to get a scratch and I even took a knife and scraped it across the screen surely no scratches but in the end I guess it is all up preference

Dont mean to hi jack the thread but is there a way to clean a screen protector? I was installing mine and it slipped out of my hand. I have tried using scotch tape to the debris off of it but I cant get all of it. Any ideas????
Invisishield
I've had the Invisishield on my phone since late August. I just recently had to exchange that under warranty and the Invisishield removed easily and installed easily on the new phone, no air pockets at all. Still looks like the day I bought it.

possible one of the WORST things to put on a phone's screen. Especially a touch screen phone with one of the best glass and screens.
The invisishield and all others LIKE IT offer nothing but horrible viewing and use. The cover often resists your fingers movements, your fingers often drag on it and the smoothness of glass is all gone and replaced by a crappy rubbery and not to mention GRAINY protector.
Surprisingly, the only thing close to being clear, and smooth is the cheap stuff on ebay. I've used them and they offer great protection and are cheap enough to change out every month. I no longer use one.
for what its worth I got the BodyGuardz protectors when they were on thanks giving sale.
It does not feel like the glass, given, but i almost feel like i like that it gives just a little resistance to my touch. it does have the slightest orange peel effect but you can only see it if its off and at an angle.
Its not perfect, but I like it especially since I have a bit of OCD and it would drive me crazy if i got the smallest scratch on the screen. This gives me piece of mind.

you're better of with these. They're clear and dont have the resistance you feel with other rubbery protectors. I'd use the ebays ones before anything else, especially if you are OCD.
At $1.57 for 3, you can change it every month if you want, but I've had good luck with them in the past.
I got gadgetshieldz they cost around $6 for full body protection. Worked for me, they are quite nice easy to install and quite good in performance. A word of caution though the it took 20 days for it to get to me in Canada.

I know they posted this topic for other phones but i just got these anti glare protectors for the tb and they blow ass! I just asked for the plastics and didn't look. i didn't even know they made this garbage. Reduces the quality of your screen tremendously! So if you buy screen protectors make sure they are not anti glare..because they suck......really bad
To each his own. I prefer anti-glare/fingerprint over all other screen protectors. I used them on my Droid 2 and now use them on my ThunderBolt.
The negative, as you said, is reduced screen quality, but to me the pros outweigh the cons. I love not having to see ugly fingerprints/smudges across the screen, as well as being able to see the screen in the sun.
I agree, I can't stand the anti glare/fingerprint screen protectors. It was nice to not have fingerprints all over my screen, but definitely not worth the diminished quality of the screen. Everything was cloudy and full brightness looked like it was on halfway. They do blow!
Steinheil Ultra Fine
Have one of these on my TBolt. Changes the texture of the screen, but works incredibly well. Comes with two in a pack, kind of a steep price, though I find them better than the Zaggs which are kinda.... too slick?
They reduce glare by a good margin, fingerprints are much less noticeable (pizza grease from idiot friends still shows up) and will protect the screen from most scratches you can throw at it

Just got the Ultra Fine after using the Verizon screen protector. Very disappointed. Verizon protector had a lot of glare in the sun, and fingerprints but could easily be wiped off. Ultra Fine kills my colors, is just as difficult to see in the sun, and shows a rainbow effect on white webpages/documents. I'm sending them a complaint and some pictures, paid way too much for this... texture is nice though!
They even advertise on the package "no rainbow effect" urgh.
wow im surprised so many people rather reduce the quality of their screen over a little glare or finger smudge. i guess if you watch a lot of video on your phone, you can deal with the glare like i do. they are nice not to wipe your phone all the time, but the way they pixelate the screen drives me nuts
My protector had a slight 'scratch' on it, and in my annoyance, I went to replace it with one of the two remaining in my VZW/HTC pack (luckily not on the real screen though.) Crap managed to slip between the screen & protector on number 2, and number 3 had residue on the screen side, even though the dual-cover was still on it correctly.
I dropped by VZW to buy more, but instead of getting whichever version I had before, the rep gave me some anti-glare ones in the same packaging. I hate them. Every pixel looks like it's shining through frosted glass, and it's ruining my movie/tv experience.
Catch is, I never wrote down the type of protector I had before (it was glossy and easily reflected light,) but didn't degrade the image while using the display. Does somebody know the type offhand?
Or, even better, can anyone recommend a better protector if one exists? $16 for 3 tiny sheets of clear plastic seems like highway robbery.
I've always used the cheap generic ones on eBay that come from Hong Kong after having a surprisingly good one on my PSP.
Though you run the slight chance of running into a seller that has the low quality screen protectors (I've had a coworker that received some that had light scratches immediately, as you're running your fingers across it), it's still a relatively cheap gamble (less than $5).
The good ones are scratch-resistant, do not take away any quality from the screen, and are barely noticeable. The only downside, they pick up fingerprint oils VERY easily. If that bothers you, have a microfiber cloth with you. IMO they are on par with the Steinheils.
I bought mine before the Thunderbolt's release (to prepare for its arrival!) for $3.80 for 6x screen protectors. They're still within the same price range.

Those are the best screen protectors I've ever used. I have the ultra clear one and I can't tell that it's there. And it's super smooth!

The anti-fingerprint ones are matte. They have that frosted look. Personally, I prefer ghost armor or ZAGG over the stienheils. It's because I like wet application though so I don't get crap stuck between the screen and the screen protector.

Use that link and order the ultra fine screen protector. It's the yellow one and is anti-fingerprint. The way these screen protectors feel are fantastic. They're super smooth and glide very easily. Comparatively speaking, the zagg shields IMO are sticky. I also feel weird getting my phone wet to put on a screen protector. Just me though....

I've only had my GN for about two weeks now, but the other day I noticed that when a bright light is reflecting off its screen, I can see hairline scratches in the surface. Never experienced this with my Nexus One, or Panache, or Milestone, or Optimus One. Is anyone else getting these too?
Happened to me too. I just put a cover on it. Not even noticeable

Luckily no scratches here. I keep mine naked, and never keep it around any of my keys.
Yes you can only see them in sunlight at the right angle. I think its actualky just the oleophobic coating which the nexus one did not have.
Okay well I grabbed a cheap $8 screen protector at a local store to prevent further damage for now. And you're right, the scratches are no longer visible. Unfortunately it's an awful protector. I thought the matte texture might be nice, but it creates this distracting effervescent effect on the screen. Also I can't seem to get the air out of the edges.
But it'll do until I order something better and it arrives. Any recommendations for protectors that look and feel good, aren't overpriced, and will ship to Canada without costing double?

just ignore them if they are so small that you can only see it under sunlight at certain angles. my atrix had a bunch of those after a while but i can never see them when the screen is on. sounds like you prefer the feel of the glass than a plastic screen protector anyways.

Without a protector - they are very visible when any light, even soft indoor lighting, reflects off the surface of the screen. And in the few weeks since I got my GN, a total of about 6 prominent scratches and 4-8 other little tiny ones have appeared. I do prefer the feel of the glass but this is just ridiculous - every Android I owned before this had so much more of a resilient screen.
Not sure about where to buy the screen protector, but a hint in putting them on to get the bubbles out and them position correctly.
After you clean the screen ... put a fine mist of glass cleaner on the screen then apply the protector ... the liquid will allow you to slide the protector into place and then as you smooth it out, it pushes the excess liquid out the side and will generally smooth out without leaving the air bubbles.
What kind of glass cleaner do you mean? Many are alcohol based, which I assume would affect the plastic and also fail to evaporate when trapped in between.

Mine scratched on some coin change in my pocket.
I did a good screen cleaning today in sunlight, and damn just have tons of micro scratches, all in the bottom middle where it gets constant use. No way its the glass, just the coating considering how well i treat my phone. Like crazy insane, its never been in any pocket ever, not even once.
Yeah I'd say any scratch that is hard to see under a screen protector is only on the coating - when you add the protector, the total thickness of the two "coatings" becomes more even and the optics don't favour visibility. If the scratch gets down into the glass, then you'd still see it under a protector.

Not to mention air bubbles, they get discolored after a while, you can't enjoy the screen quality, and I looked it up. Apprarently Gorilla glass can get scratched by a steel file, but nothing less.
Basically, unless you're carryimg around an iron file in your pockets, and putting your phone with it, you're good.
And yes, knives, and keys can scratch your screen, but you have to go out of your way to scratch it. It won't scratch if in contact like your pockets or something.
The only real risk of screen damage (realistically I'm real life settings) is dropping it. A screen protector isn't saving that. And if you work construction, a screen protector ain't saving your screen from what ever a gonna damage it on the site.

I must admit there is a small scratch on the screen, visible at a certain angle with the screen off, but I don't look at my phone at that angle or with the screen off.
I've had a screen protector and Commuter series Otterbox case on mine since day one. I've only had to change the screen protector like 3 times in almost two years, and that's only because they started losing their resistance to fingerprints. I've never had any problems with air bubbles or screen dimming because I didn't buy el cheapo screen protectors, but they weren't expensive either.
After all this time, I can take off the case and screen protector and my S4 still looks like it did the day I bought it.
It's a small price to pay for keeping your phone in great condition. No doubt the next owner will appreciate it when I decide to upgrade.

A good case can protect the screen from taking a skid across concrete just as well though.

This.
Scratching can be done with less than a steel file.
I keep my phone in my front pocket and the only other thing that is ever in that pocket is paper money. Nothing else ever goes in that pocket.
I have 2 small scratches after 18 months. Neither visible when the screen is on...but there none the less. Best I can figure is they are from the metal rivets in my jeans.
A screen protector would have prevented that. But would have also lowered the quality of the screen in the mean time. Its a trade off. And each person has to decide which is more important to them.

Lol, lemme get this straight...
You guys agree that screen protectors are "dumb" and "useless" while at the same time admitting that your screens have scratches on them...
Makes total sense. [/sarcasm]
I'll take the hardly noticeable decrease in screen clarity over scratches any days. You can always change the screen protector for something better, but even minor scratches are permanent. No thank you.
It depends on what screen protector you get, if you get the Chinese protectors 3 in a pack that look and feel like seran wrap you could windup with lose of clarity and a tacky rubbery feel.
Last year I got a Spigen thin air clear case and it came with a screen protector that looked like a rigid piece of plastic and kind of thick, I figured it's included with the case so I gave it a try. Well I was pleasantly surprised at the feel quality and clarity of the protector, you cannot tell that there is a screen protector on the screen, very hard and slick feel on screen and the same sharpness and vivid color of the original plain screen.
It was a ***** putting it on, had to wet the edges to get it on right, in the end it was well worth it.
Spigen screen protectors are considered premium screen protection.
Who knew.
Pp.
The only screen protectors I've ever used was a three pack from Tmo when I bought my S4 and the one that came with my Otterbox. I don't remember the brand of the three pack, but they worked just fine with no noticeable loss in clarity. The Otterbox screen protector has some weird wavy pattern when tilted while the screen is off, but it's otherwise fine. No noticeable loss of clarity with it either. I'm in no rush to get a new 3 pack.
Honestly, I don't know how anyone in this thread can seriously argue against using a screen protector especially considering the cost of the phone they protect. IMO it's right up there with purchasing the phone without insurance.
I grabbed the Otterbox Defender, popped the screen protector that comes with the OB out (because I got tired of little bits of dust getting behind that screen protector from either the charging port, speaker holes, or the headphone jack) and just put a Zagg Invisible Shield on it. On top of the dust getting behind the OB screen protector, it also seemed to add a type of haze to the screen which I didn't like. It obviously detracted from the 1080p HD look. I haven't changed the Zagg shield since I got the device and only very recently have I noticed very small lines appearing at the part of the screen where I swipe to unlock and the keyboard area.
The tempered glass screen protector I have used for the past two years has saved the screen glass two times now. One when a hammer fell out of my hand a couple feet from the floor and hit my phone by my feet. Glass protector cracked but the screen underneath was unscathed. The replacement survived multiple drops face first on concrete over the next year and only gained a couple micro fractures. Replaced that one last week and the screen underneath was still as good as new. Tempered glass protectors don't degrade image quality or hinder finger movement either. I know mine was extreme cases of abuse but they really are beneficial unless you feel like replacing the whole front glass of the phone after a mishap happens.
