[Q] AT&T Update on unlocked GS3 phone - AT&T, Rogers, Bell, Telus Samsung Galaxy S III

I have an unlocked AT&T Galaxy S3 but my new carrier is T-Mobile. My question is, is it safe to try and update the phone's software through the phone settings "Software Update"? This because the android version on the phone is 4.0.4 and I'll like to update it to a jellybeans. Any advises?
NB: The phone has been previously rooted.

you can make in recovery a full backup in case it will not be good, but I want to say let's go! F*ck a duck and try to fly!

Give it a shot, the worst it will do is tell you your phone is not supported. It won't flash a T-Mobile image or anything.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using Tapatalk 4 Beta

You can do that or VIA KIES and it will update to the latest 4.1.1 from ATT. If the phone is unlocked it will not re-lock. You will just have to disable the ATT and Samsung bloatware.

If you do not want a rooted device, I highly suggest Kies as mentioned already just to be sure. However, if you are comfortable with being rooted, you can always ODIN the rooted AT&T Jellybean rom (do not odin T-Mobile). Your phone will remained unlocked.

Personally I'm running the 1700 mod on T-Mobile with cm10. It was a bit to set up, seeing I'm not using the nv backup way but it was well worth it. I have 3g in areas that were not refarmed yet and the phone is faster than hell. I would highly recommend this way and if you need help getting it working just ask.
Were you let out of your contract early too?

I tried updating from AT&T server but it didn't work. I got a server's connection error. As suggested here, I also tried Kies but for some reason it doesn't recognize the phone. I tried it on windows, MacOX but nothing. I'm somehow new to this so I'm kind of scare to do it manually, but I think that's the only option left

The server connection error is not surprising since you are not on AT&T. As far as Kies is concerned, this is most likely a driver issue. Fix the driver and you should be good to go. What version of windows did you use?

I'm using Windows XP and I downloaded, unistalled, redownloaded new drivers but when I plug in the phone it still says connecting endlessly. I have being struggling with Kies for almost 4 days now but it still doesn't recognize the phone. I think the last solution is to do it manually. I'll give it a try this week end.

[Q] galaxy note 2 firmware downgrade

I recently bought and rooted my newish (bought used) galaxy note 2 and flashed jedi x 13, but I hate the 4.1.2 update to the phone. I have terrible battery life even with trickster mod plus it prevents me unlocking the phone to use internationally. So my question is since im no pro at this... if I downgrade the firmware from 4.1.2 to 4.1.1 with jedi x rom installed will it mess up the phone? Or cause any compatibility issues? Hate to bother people with questions that are probably no brainers but ive looked everywhere to see if jedi x 13 is compatible with the downgrade.
You'll be fine. ODIN flash stock 4.1.1 and boot into factory recovery when done and do a factory reset.

Why you wanna downgrade, just use Odin thru the toolkit in the original development thread for note 2

UPDATE - firmware downgrade was a success but heres what to expect when doing so in case theres anyone else wanting to try this thats new to this kind of thing.
I flashed the firmware to the device using odin and then factory reset and wiped cache (through recovery by holding vol up home and power). If you dont do these two things and try to reboot the phone normally you will get stuck in a boot loop due to the phone trying to load both firmwares. After the wipe and phone is rebooted if your device was rooted it will no longer be so and you will have to reroot. I would expect anyone who is trying this to already know how to root your device. After rerooting and using clockworkmod to reinstall my jedi x 13 rom almost everything was working as it should. The only thing that is not functioning properly is my data connection. I unlocked the phone after downgrading through the special menu and put my sim in and calling and messaging is working A okay. The data issue is that it will not get my at&t 4g lte and the connection on the phone displays it changing from 4g to hspa+ to 3g all the time. If anyone knows why this is please let me know.

Because I was having a wifi issue with the 4.1.2 update. I could be out in the street from my house and still get full wifi signal, after getting the update I would only have maybe one bar of signal just outside on my back porch. And also for using the phone internationally since I have to constantly switch sims.

[Q] First timer with restoring Rogers GS3 to factory but keep unlocked

Hey there!
So here's my situation: I recently got rid of a Rogers cellphone plan and decided to sell my GS3. Someone I know, immediately showed interest and decided to buy it from me. Good! At that moment, the device was locked to Rogers and was running stock Samsung GS3 (SGH-i747M) firmware.
That person decided to play with the phone, try to root it, flash Cyanogenmod or whatever it may be, and having failed several times, he decided to return the phone and get his money back. I shouldn't have accepted to reimburse him knowing how much he fiddled with it but I did.
Anyways too late now. The good thing is that I believe the phone is 100% functional (it boots, runs perfect and under system info shows everything as usual except under Status > Device Status, it shows modified.
I am not 100% sure of that what means but I believe it has something to do with a modified ROM or something like that.
That person supposedly unlocked the device because he was with another carrier.
Now I am putting the phone in the classifieds. Obviously I would like to have the phone back to 100% factory settings and ROM, no aftermarket stuff whatsoever BUT I'd like to keep it unlocked (if that's possible).
That way, it will be easier to resell.
So here's my questions:
What does "Device Status: Modified" really means?
How can I find out if the phone has been altered in any ways?
If it has been altered, is there a LINUX based procedure to restore EVERYTHING back to factory?
If I restore whatever has to be restored, will it re-lock the device?
As you can see, I am a total noob in that field. I would appreciate if someone can help me to prepare this device to be resold.
I don't want to cause any problems to anyone, that wouldn't be fair.
I appreciate. Thanks!!!
Okay a lot of questions, you can download the stock firmware from Samsung updates and if it is rooted you can get triangle away on the play store and reset the counter the using kies or the Samsung galaxy s3 toolkit from mskip's to flash the original firmware, your phone should be unlocked as none of the procedures should/could reloj the simple card

Ok I have verified with an app called Root Checker Basic, and it said that the device wasn't rooted. I wonder if this is reliable.
I wiull check mskip's toolkit or Kies to restore the stock firmware.
What a pain..
Thanks jimchee for replying!!
Actually it's pretty easy but you can probably sell it just as easy if it's rooted and that way you can clear the counter, there is also a post in the Samsung sIII THREAD for AT&T that will walk you through restoring to stock, just make sure you download the file for your device the link is also in the att thread, if you have any trouble pm me and I can help, I am just a tinkerer but been doing it since my 1st original Motorola Droid
Sent from my SGH-I747M using Tapatalk 4
Probably the easiest approach would be to look for the Samsung S3 V7.0 toolkit post. This is a flash (programming) tool. It would easily root your phone if it needs that. Then you can use the app referred to earlier to reset the phone to an "unmodified" status.
Then finally go to the Samsung updates site as suggested and flash the phone with a stock Rogers firmware. I'd recommend a 4.1.1. version. Probably your phone will still be unlocked at this point. But if not, the stock v 4.1.1. Rogers firmware will allow you to unlock it again from an onscreen menu (search for "S3 unlock code *#197328640#"). And your phone will report an unmodified status at the end.

basic question about unlocked At&t note 2

So, I have an i317 At&t note 2. It was originally on 4.3, but I wanted to unlock it. I followed some forum posts and reverted back to 4.1 and was able to unlock it. It worked with a tmobile sim on 4.1.1, but now when I try to update it (either through Kies or through update on phone), it updates but then gets stuck at the samsung galaxy note 2 display. I found another forum post (thanks, but cant find thread atm ) which had a file to download. I installed that using Odin, but that only got it to work on 4.1.1.
I guess my question is I have the note 2 running on 4.1.1 that I factory unlocked, but now it wont let me update. How do I get 4.3 on it? Thanks
Ok there's plenty of 4.3 Rom's in the development section...
Just have to search for them!
Q: »»»»
Is it rooted?
Do you have a custom recovery installed?
Are you sure your familiar flashing Rom's?
Etc etc etc......

It is not rooted. All I have done to it is downgrade it to 4.1.1, then unlocked it. Is there a stock ROM. I want to be able to go into settings -> about phone -> and update it that way whenever a new version comes out and not have to install custom ROMS. Is that possible?
No, I don't have a custom recovery installed and I am not familiar with flashing Rom's.
I thought I could downgrade to 4.1.1, unlock, then update to the newest stock version through updates in the phone, but thats not the way it works when you unlock the note 2??
thanks
Pardon me if I sound ignorant. I am new to android (switched over from apple a month ago). The note 2 had 4.3 on it. I followed thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2014982
to unlock my phone, but had to revert back to 4.1.1 in order to do so. I followed posting
http://wccftech.com/guide-to-downgrade-firmware-on-samsung-galaxy-devices/
to downgrade to 4.1.1. That went successfully and I successfully unlocked the note and all was good. It was running 4.1.1 and I was using a tmobile sim. I went to updates through settings on the phone and tried to update. After that point, it just boots up to "samsung galaxy note 2" screen. I used Odin3 v3.07 to reinstall 4.1.1 and its working again.
I would ideally like to be able to go through software updates on the phone to update it and not need to use custom roms. Is the problem I am trying to update from 4.1.1 to 4.3 and I need to manually update to 4.2.x first, then go to 4.3?
I don't understand why unlocking it prevents me from updating from 4.1.1. I have tried through the phone and through Kies, which keeps getting an error. Does this make sense? Am i doing something wrong? The phone is originally At&t. Do I need an At&t sim inserted to update through the phone?
thanks for all the help and once again, sorry if these questions seems elementary. I am reading through forum posts and trying to understand what all this means. I'm not sure what rooting or flashing means and how flashing is different then unlocking.
Thanks for the help

What is unclear is why ware you trying unlock it, what carrier it was on and what carrier you are changing to,
You're asking if it needs an ATT SIM to update, so I'm lost on what carrier it was on.
The original carrier is at&t. I unlocked it and now am using a tmobile sim. However, when I got to settings and check for updates, it says "checking at&t servers for updates". So it is working for tmobile now, but only on 4.1.1. I don't mind downloading custom roms (and definitely appreciate the work), but I would like the option to not have to.
And when I boot up the phone, even though the network says tmobile, it shows at&t start up screen when it boots up into 4.1.1. Which is why u was thinking maybe the reason it won't do updates through the phone is cause there is no at&t sim inserted when it is "checking at&t server for updates"

Well, over my head here. I think you have figured out technically why it's not working.
You are operating on a T-mobile network and you will not see ATT servers.
Even though it's says you are on T-mobile is anything working? Like texting, surfing or cell calls?
I would imagine texting is not since the config should be pointing at ATT servers.
I would think you should be running one of these factory images
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1969551
I personally do not know if the T-889 is close to the ATT Note 2 model.
You may want to bounce over to this forum
http://forum.xda-developers.com/note-2-tmobile
See if anyone has attempted what you are doing.
In my mind you need to flash a T-mobile image to do what you want.
I am not suggesting you do this, I am merely giving you an opinion.
You may want to investigate this custom ROM

Yeah, I dunno. It's an i317 on at&t. And it was definitely on tmobile cause it let me send text messages and it showed "tmobile" across the top as well as their 4g icon.
All I was trying to do was unlock my at&t note 2. Now its unlocked but stuck to 4.1.1. Lol

Installing the Official 6.0.1 update via Samsung Kies or Odin or different method.

Hey everyone.
I'm running on completely Stock 5.1.1 OK1 on my Note 4 and just recieved the official MM OTA update last night. Due to my phone having a lot of junk and being laggy I decided to flash the official firmware from any external method to have a clean install of the os. I heard about Samsung Kies which makes a back up of your phone and installs the latest os, I installed and backed up my phone last night but it didn't seem to give me an update on the os, it said "This is the latest version" (5.1.1 COK1).
My main concern about this is. I've bought this phone from Pakistan (used phone but in brand new condition) and I'm currently living in Malaysia and I have no idea who was the previous owner of this phone. In Kies it shows the phone number different than what I have (maybe its the Sprint phone number?).
What if my carrier is locked by having a clean install? Or any sort of other related issue occurs.
Please take some time to enlighten the facts from your knowledge, will highly appreciate it.
Regards.

Yeah but you totally missed my question here.
Its not that I don't want to do some research myself, I'm a student and I'm busy most of the time. So if anyone can take out their precious time to answer my question I'd really appreciate the help.
If you're concerned about your phone or sim getting lock..you can just use galaxy tools apk v3.1.5 & then upgrade the apk to v3.1.8 & it will unlocked it for you... but i doubt it will lock you down... maybe you can just try to back your rom completely & restore if any issues encounter
it's dependent on the way that they unlocked the phone, someone in vietnam has been locked after updated the phone, but my phone was not.

Canada N903W8 Note 7 - Cant custom recovery - Help Needed

Hi Guys,
I've just spent the last 8 hours trying to get an Canadian Note 7 to custom recovery and ROM with NO luck !
I've done a couple of Note 7s of UK spec but this is the first Note 7 from Canada, and so far i've had no luck at getting it to accept anything.
The handset has received the cripple code that has disabled wifi, blutooth, 4G, tethering and reduced the battery capacity to 15%
I have tried several files and different methods of loading in a custom recovery so i can then load a custom ROM.
The favorite is to use ODIN and then either load CWM or TWRP.
When trying to load either CWM or TWRP i get an "Auth Fail" or "QTQ Close" error
I tried to use the Sprint method to get into the system and allow a custom ROM and all this did was brick the phone... Its currently stuck in no boot state which just takes me into the standard android recovery with errors of "dirty targets", "check DRK files" and "dm-Verity verification failed"
At the moment i cant find a way to get the handset to load a custom recovery and then a rom, stock or custom.
If anyone can help with fixing This-POS Canadian Telus Note 7 Handset i would greatly appreciate it before i stamp on it and send it back to samsung !
cheers guys
The Canadian variant has a locked bootloader, so no custom recovery and no root. There are workarounds to get the older firmware back that doesn't cripple the phone. There are threads on here for that if you search around.

Correct, no root yet unless its first gen N7 with first firmware but im sure non around anymore.
Best bet is to find a firmware and downgrade to 100% battery. Then block all the packages to prevent future updates from samsung. If you IMEI was blocked then that is a whole different ball game in which Samsung is winning so far in Canada
Thanks for the info guys
I spent 9 hours in the end attacking this thing from all angles and just managed to corrupt it so it doesn't even boot now.
The Canadian phone companies and samsung have done a dam good job at taking these phones down or rendering them totally useless.

Do you have any recommendations on what i should use / try to rectify this

Nop... I'm on API3.
I'm using package disabler right now to avoid the OTA updates. I had a notification today that the update was downloading so I just turned off wifi and disabled almost everything under the sun (besides core services) relating to samsung and it no longer seems to be connecting to the update server which is what I want in the end.
Well the saga continues...
I managed to trick it into letting me sideload from ADB.... only problem is i couldn't find any files in .zip format to side load and those that i could it wouldn't accept.
I did manage to get a partial sucsess with odin and got a CP file to install properly... sadly it rejected the BL, AP and CSC files and now its really screwed things up as it just boot loops now and the android recovery kinda doesn't work now.
So any ideas on how to defeat this POS, i refuse to let Samsung Canada and the phone companies beat me, but i think i am fighting a losing battle...
Only half decent firmware files i could find were N930W8VLU1APH1_N930W8OYA1APH1_ESK
Ok really screwed it now ! GERRRRRR
Managed to get it to take a new Bootloader ! all completed in ODIN and the phone rebooted, started to load then crashed and now wont turn on at all - TOTALLY BRICKED !
but the strange thing is, when you plug it in windows still sees it, you would expect nothing to happen like if the phone were switched off completely, but Windows 7 sees it as a device and set up drivers for ELINK HS-USB QDLoader 9008 (COM5)
very odd, and incredibly frustrating !

I think that was the firmware which came with the device, the first original firmware which shipped with it from samsung before the APH1 OTA.
Of course you cant flash that, no surprise there

APH1 Note 7 Rogers with 15% update, no WiFi/Cellular
New user here. I've got an APH1 Note 7 first edition without the green battery icon on Rogers in Canada in the same situation - 15% battery, no WiFi, no cellular. I've tried a few package disablers but it seems all the free ones require WiFi to activate the product license (which I can't exactly do). It's failed every Odin flash attempt I've made, usually stopping at recovery.img or a couple of steps after that. I've tried flashing firmware from all US variants and multiple Canadian ones as well. Any ideas on how to recover the phone? It still boots (even though I semi-bricked it twice). I'm thinking that there might be some options through ADB - could anyone guide me on how to do that?

Your lucky man...original firmware means you can still root with the engineering firmware. That should kill any OTAs. Check out the development forum in the Tmo note 7 area.
In addition check out note7alliance.com they have a working disabler.
Is yours still working on the network? I had thought all note 7s here were blocked from cellular networks...mine is from rogers

Just like you, running on Rogers with no network connectivity.
Seems like the N7A package disabler requires WiFi to authenticate, so I can't use that method sadly.
Right now I'm trying to use a spare rooted phone to put a package disabler app onto my SD, to see if I can then run the app in the Note 7. It's one of the few options I have left, but I'll still try it, as I can't flash firmware without blocking updates.

I've got the Rogers APH3 firmware lying around, so I should be good on that front.
I'll see how far I can get with the N7A method. Thanks for the advice.
i have a rogers note 7 still. thought about trying to make it work but seeing everyones struggles, doesnt seem worth it. anyone have luck selling these things?
The market for Note 7s is mixed. Some units requiring more software work sell for as little as $200 (that's what I paid); decently working units (e.g. 60% limited units) fetch ~$600; and perfect condition units without any disabling updates can still for $1000. Some brand new in box units can still sell for $2000.
That said, is selling even legal? What are the implications around that?
