Why do I have to turn Wifi off to send/receive MMS? - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S III

Hi all,
I've had this issue for the entire time I've had my GS3 - on stock or custom roms. Essentially, in order for me to send or receive an MMS message, my wifi has to be off (disconnected) and I have to have data on.
If my wifi is connected and I have mobile data toggled on, mms still doesn't work. On prior phones it would briefly enable 3G to send/receive the MMS, but on the GS3, I have to fully toggle off wifi and make sure 1x/3G is on to MMS.
Any solutions to this? Is there a setting that I'm missing here?
Thanks!

What rom are you on? Because as long as data is on it will work regardless of whether wifi is on or not. I assume from your issue that you are on an aosp rom?

You could try GoSMS, I can recieve and send MMS over WiFi.

Yes.. id try wiping wiping...then flash a freshly downloaded rom.....i have tried lots of kernals...roms....and i always use wifi here in my house..calls and messages work just fine.... i WILL SAY THIS.. back when i was using froyo.. there was an option to disable data when wifi was in use but i have never seen that on the s3 or any other roms after froyo..
Sent from my SPH-L710 using xda app-developers ap

Of course you can toggle data off when on wifi. Any phone should be able to do this. I know for a fact the S3 you can togle data off when on Wi-Fi. But regardless as long as your data is on you should be able to send and receive MMS at any time regardless if wifi is on or not.
Now if your using an aosp rom you could have an issue handling the exchange between wifi and data. There is no aosp rom for our device so everything is built on leaks and ports and patched together. So they do have some issues handling the exchange.

MSG & Chubbz v5.0.2
When both Data & Wifi are toggled on (and Wifi is connected), MMS won't send/receive. If Wifi is off and Data is On, then it's fine. It's been this way on both roms I've ever run on my GS3; the current one (listed above & in my sig) and Freeza's GalaxyS Fre3.

Well that has to be a rom issue because stock rom and almost every TW rom will do this no problems. Mine works perfectly on the stock TW rom and on TPR. Unless you have some type of app like juicedefender or something like that which is shutting down your data and it will never recognize the messaging app trying to toggle the data to send an MMS because it happens in a split second.

I just quit running that ROM for the longest time, never once had this problem.
EDIT-I forgot to mention I was using the AOSP messaging app for TouchWiz-http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1950443. I would make a backup before you try this, because it replaces the stock messaging app.

T-mobile can't receive or send mms on WiFi

Why can't I receive or send mms when WiFi is connected. I didn't have this issue on sprint. It sucks cause I have to turn off WiFi and then it has to connect to edge then eventually on 4g before i can get or send my mms quicker. I have to use WiFi a lot on this device so I don't go over my cap so I need to have WiFi on at home and work. Very frustrating.

My wife can't download mms on WiFi with at&t
I have the same problem with Verizon.
MMS are the texts with data right? Yeah I noticed I can't send with just wifi.
Normal text are fine.
AT&T btw for the XDA app users.
Edit: I noticed you said at all when I reread it. I can send em fine with wifi enabled but I have to have mobile network enabled as well.
Maybe this is more common than i thought.
MultiMediaMessages needs your data access to send. WiFi will not work.

You youre right that it does need data but I think what its supposed to do is switch to mobile network real quick and send/receive then revert back to wifi. The issue is its not doing this on my Tmobile s3.
Edit: Ran a few more test. Had my gf send me 2 mms while I was on wifi and I was able to recieve 1. But other I couldnt receive. It may have something to do with my data connection as I get 50% edge. I have a feeling that when its on edge while wifi is on that it cant DL the mms but on 4g while wifi is on it will work. I need to run a test outdoor where I get full 4g but still connect to wifi.
Same issue here, on simple mobile, I will assume is GS3 MMS bug and when you do receive MMS, it's pretty small
Just use gmail.
People really need to start using email in lieu of mms, the pictures don't get distorted, it sends/receives faster, handles much larger files
I don't know why people even use mms anymore. Everything should be done in email.

Yes, you're right. Life is about choices.
Just like people can "choose" to drive 3,000 miles instead of taking a flight. Or they can "choose" to ship via snail mail instead of UPS.
Doesn't mean their choices and/or preferences aren't ineffective or moronic, or that people want to hear them whine about the "choices" they make.
Aside from that, it doesn't look like it's a "choice" on Wifi. So you can choose to send an email and be done with it, or choose to whine and stomp your feet on xda which has virtually no effect on the situation other than rounding up other whiners.
It's like people complaining about using Blu-Ray and complaining they can't stream VHS to their phone

For SMS over t-mobile wifi calling works great. MMS on ICS/JB roms seems to have issues but GB ROMS it worked the last time I tried it. I would also note that when I was in Europe with WIFI only (no roaming on my phone), that MMS messages wouldn't go, but SMS did.
Also if you use T-Mobile WIFI Calling make sure you signup for the **free** add on. If you don't when you use WIFI Calling, it counts against your minutes when calling someone.
Thanks for the info. I'm using Andromadus Mimicry v1.3.2. So maybe that's the problem?

Works fine for me. I have very poor coverage at home, wifi-calling is the main reason I'm not running the JB ROM full time.
Been using Mimicry as my DD for a couple months. T-Mobile's wifi-calling sometimes flakes and doesn't want to connect, but if it says it's connected SMS is fine. Not sure about MMS.
Its been confirmed that mms over tmo wifi calling doesn't work on ics by edkeys. But you can see when you receive an mms and at that point you can switch to cell data and just get it. And then switch back to wifi calling

I'm using 1.3.2 as well, but you have to be using the 26.13.04.19 radio in order for the T-Mobile wifi calling app to work. Calling and SMS works, MMS doesn't.
PS: Installing the Google Now zip will break wifi calling (ie: it'll be active, but will fail to receive/send)

When I tested, the icon showing wifi calling enabled looked fine and all, and wifi bars would show with data bars off just like normal. However when you goto send an sMS for example it would immediately fail as if it were relying on the data connectivity. Something in the Google Now Package (tried v5 and v6) breaks it. But if you were to re-flash edkey's wifi calling after Google Now it seems to work.
I guess the reason I never noticed was because when I did it I flashed mimicry then google now and wifi calling. That only happened because when I upgraded to the new mimicry I noticed wifi calling missing so that's why I added it last. I guess I just got lucky

Go SMS will send/receive mms when connected to Wi-Fi but not if you have Wi-Fi calling also on. Not sure there's a way around this. However the stock messaging app works on wifi even with Wi-Fi calling on. But even with the issue I still prefer to use go SMS pro over stock or handcent mainly due to it's iPhone mms group chat capabilities. Handscent seems to have a lot of issues with this feature.

Bone stock should be able to send/receive mms over wifi calling. If you are using a ROM I have no idea, you'll have to reach out to the developer of your ROM. If you have done the mods to enable group mms, you'll have to revert back to your stock SecMms.apk to send/receive via wifi calling then switch back to your modded SecMms.apk. Unless someone has made a fix but I haven't been able to find any yet.

Turn off DATA, but leave MMS

Hi guys,
I live on campus and we have wifi everywhere and so I have the 200mb option to save some pennies.
Can I disable mobile data somehow but leave MMS (MMS does not count towards tmobile data). It already racked up 60mb. That and it might save some battery too, who knows.
Are you saying if you turn off mobile data you lose MMS? I'm confused..

If you are on stock ROM i think there is a way to use MMS over WiFi calling. But after a quick google, it seems like third party apps such as GOSMS and Handcent dont like MMS over WiFi calling. So just use the stock MMS app. Remember, this is only if you are on a stock ROM or TouchWiz ROM. AOSP ROMs do not work at all with WiFi calling (From what i remember)

MMS over WiFi Calling

Hi,
I am running ICS 4.0.4...using stock messaging or Go SMS.
Is there any way to fix the MMS over WiFi calling issue? It's awful. Even though group SMS works within Go SMS, it fails if I'm on WiFi calling, and my friends hate using GroupMe. Are there any APN settings I can change? a different MMS.apk app I can use?
I am rooted FYI.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Craig

Im the one who originally posted the Samsung fix several months ago. I have used it after MMS over wifi not working on several ROMS after initial flash, including my current ROM Beastmade (odexed).
Here is your requested video. I sent an MMS to myself, and you can see 4G never turns on. Only wifi uploads/downloads.
Here you go!
MMS only works over data! If on wifi calling it will switch over to data to send and if data is off it will not send.
