As we finally got CM 10.1.2 Stable Release for GNex (here), I'd like to discuss these two ROM titans.
I really like this PA3+ ROM because of its speed and really stunning interface, but I'm still swaying because of CM's team experience.
So, I'd like to hear, what you guys do actually think about this.
I outline the next main criteria for me when choosing a ROM:
Speed
Security
Battery life
I know that some of you already have installed and chosen the best ROM for you and I'd like to know your opinion.
So, looking forward to hearing from you.
-Michael.
I would recommend pa3+ its a more advanced experience. Loaded with the latest 3rd party mods, tweaks such as Pi€„ Halo„ custom navbar status bar,, etc

I'm on cm10.1.2 since yesterday and do far it's been stable.
I have turned off all animations and chosen sicksky as launcher; there is a speed-up and stability. I haven't had any hangs or fc as of yet.
In stock cm kernel too.
I used the PA that was available in mid May; when halo was still new and I wasn't impressed by the ROM. It didn't blow me away and at times felt slower than an unrooted phone

Unfortunately threads discussing which ROMs are best tend to turn into argument, so we try to discourage them.

So thinking about flashing cyanogen on my Gnex and wondering if anyone has feedback from having flashed both?
I'm currently running AOKP and love the rom, it's stable and fast. I'm more or less wondering if cyanogen is currently as stable?
anyways, thanks for your feedback
I'm planning on sticking with AOKP at least until CM9 gets to an actual release (rather than the nightlies). I test out CM9 every week or so (hooray for Boot Manager!) but so far it just doesn't have the feature set that I've come to rely upon. Right now, AOKP has a much better selection of tweaks and features, and I've found it to be damn near rock solid.
I've been using CyanogenMod since the first release a couple months ago. It's always been just as stable as the kangs but lacks the customisation. I still prefer cm9 though, and anxiously await future updates.

imho, codename is really good as well with a combo of fracos kernel

Third, never had an FC, crash, freeze, or reboot. BAMF is another keeper.
If you're referring to a Kang build of CM9, Kangs are built from the same source, but may contain "cherry picks" or changes that haven't been officially merged yet and the builds aren't official. This can occasionally lead to issues; just something to keep in mind.
CM has a lot of custom features that other ROMs don't (profiles, quiet hours, unrooted operation, highly customizable auto brightness (more levels than are available in other ROMs), more intensive colour customization, etc...) but lack (currently) the visual customization that other ROMs have more of.
Each ROM has it's +'s and -'s, depends what YOU want.
I've been using rob43's mod, adds a lot of features into cm9, so the "best of both worlds", i'd say.

Thanks for all the input guys, I did actually flash it, seemed very responsive and I didn't have a problem with it BUT like it's posted above, the features aren't there yet. So I went back to AOKP M4 and will stick with that for a while longer. CM9 felt smoother so once the features are up i'll probably jump ship
CM9 is currently lacking in the customization department. It's nearly stock.

LIQUIDSMOOTH! Amazing.
If I wanted lack of customization I would stick to stock, which is disappointingly lacking in customization.
AOKP won me over. Got it running on both my phones and love it.
I prefer AOKP
Hi Guys,
just to share with you, my point of view after flashing endlessly all kinds of ROMS, upto 8th July 2012,
AOKP and CM are both AOSP based and very similar.
however i clearly feel AOKP is better in terms of Performace, batterylife and importantly CUSTOMIZATION.
a ROM needs to have a 'CUSTOM' feel. AOKP gives its users so many customization options. Please note that similar customizations can be made on CM aswell though file tweaking.
However my advise to some1 who is flashing their phone constantly in-search of the Perfect ROM, i suggest you stick with AOKP and understand that it is the best now.
AOKP is based on AOSP, raw power. Good customization and smoothness in operation.

me too! Swept me off my feet!
AOKP is the one I keep reverting back to after I setup and try new ROMs and I save a backup of them.
Even tried Jelly Belly and really liked it, but it was way too bare bones for me. I can't live without the customization AOKP offers.
Jelly Bean and AOKP should be a great combo once that projects starts.
Hello,
I'm somewhat new to flashing ROMs (althought I stay up to date with Franco's nightly kernels), so I am kind of hesitant to flash all the time (especially since backing up constantly is a pain). The first ROM I flashed was Redemption ROM, which was a pretty zippy stock experience, but I wanted something more featured, so I switched to Axiom Crossbreed because I heard good things about it.
I like Axiom Crossbreed, but it's no longer being supported and updated by DroidTheory, the dev, due to moving onto new projects. It's based off of AOKP, but I'm hesitant to flash even another AOKP ROM because I know for a fact that Crossbreed is relatively fast, gets good battery life, and stable.
Among other things, it has features like custom lockscreens, double-tap to open Play Store (which I have grown extremely accustomed to), and just a customizable interface in general. But like I said, it's not being maintained, so in a long-winded way, what I mean to ask is: What other ROM(s) could I try that are practically guaranteed to be fast, stable, offer customization (octo lock screen, double-tap homescreen to open Play Store, custom battery icon, etc), and have great battery life--while also being updated and maintained on a regular basis?
Thanks a million!
Check out ICSourcery version 3.1. Best ROM by far I think. The amount of customization on it is amazing.

Hiya everyone,
So I just became a Galaxy Nexus owner as of yesterday, and wondering what support is out there for this phone dev side as well whats everyones fav rom? I'm quite happy with the stock AOSP 4.2.1, however I do miss some customization of roms like from CM and AOKP when I was a S2/One X owner.
Wondering if its really worth that much of a change though however to go custom? I used to build on the S2 side of things so if there seems to be a strong community on the Nexus side maybe I'll reboot the old linux box.

You couldn't just look in the development section? And there is no favorite rom for everyone. I use slim but everyone has their own preference. No offense but I'd have expected a Dev to know better.
Try Xylon, custom toggle, custom navbar, custom status bar, custom kernel, custom .... Blablabla
A powerful mix of many CM, AOKP improvements and mainly lag and bug free

I did look through the dev section, hence why I'm asking what people run. I don't feel like sitting at my computer all day downloading and flashing roms. I'm really looking for a decent rom thats up to date with AOSP at 4.2.1
No offense but I like to get involvement from people around me and get to know a new community a little better.
Do try Black Bean AOKP. I found this one a very complete and stable ROM in my starting days with Nexus.

Hmmm, why don't you try building as you used to do on your S II and customize your ROM the way you wish? Actually this is what I settled on after trying so many ROMs on my S II and I am following the same way with my GNex. I feel great and satisfied when I am running my own ROM and I may even bear some bugs in it just because it is mine
This is the only experience I can help you with because this is the only ROM I use

I may just have to do this, as I'm not looking to go down to 4.1.2, and the only 4.2.1 roms I've tried thus far actually haven't gone past the bootscreen logo oddly enough.
rasbean jelly is a wonderful aosp based rom, its always updated to be up to date with the latest aosp, asap. speaking of, it was updated minutes ago http://fitsnugly.euroskank.com/?rom=rasbeanjelly&device=maguro

Codename Android here. It's Jb 4.1 and is rock solid for me. Love the stock feel and plenty of customizations. I've tried paranoid android and bugless beast, but always come back to CNA.

For me 4.2 is a total dissapointment,i'm still running 4.1.2 on CNA 3.8.0,the best i found out there. Tried all the 4.2 roms and all of them had that lockscreen delay that was driving me nuts so I decided remaining on 4.1.2 for a while. Also tried all the 4.1 roms but the best that fits my wishes is CNA with a stock look and tons of customization, along with faux' latest kernel, 23m-sr
Paranoidandroid hands down, no rom on this site is comparable when it comes to speed, smoothness, customizations and battery life all rolled into one, others may have one of those better but none have the combination and NONE have the amount of options.
What I am using currently can be found in my signature below.
If you're looking for a stock ROM that's merely been rooted and deodexed, bigxie's ROMs are solid and popular.
If you want a lean, clean, fast ROM with only the most useful modifications, it would be hard to beat Rascarlo's ROMs.
If you want ROMs with mods galore, some of the most popular ones are CyanogenMod, CodenameAndroid, and ParanoidAndroid. But there are plenty of others with dedicated followers.
I'm using Mmuzzy's AOSP 4.2.1 with kmameguy's MODs. I have the nice CM circle percent battery and other MODs, with the stability of 4.2.1 (as stable as it gets ATM) and probably 15-20 hours on battery. I don't think there are a lot of customizations on any 4.2 ROMs yet, as they're dealing mostly with stability issues. I've tried Factory, Vanir's beta, Xylon, and others... none have been super impressive to leave Mmuzzy's...

So, with so many ROMs out for our beloved SGS 3, how could one decide which ROM they want to try? trying all the ROMs can be time consuming, so i remembered a ROM bible thread from way back in the HTC G1 forum. basically, each individual ROM was rated based on stability, speed, battery life, force closes(not really a problem for us, i imagine), and overall daily use friendliness rating. are there any gentlemen who would like to start such a thread? i'm not a developer by any means, otherwise i would gladly take lead. anyhow, here's the thread\ROM bible:

I have the next few weeks off, well starting tonight, and might take a stab at it, if someone wants to team up and share some thoughts on how to break it up we can easily knock something nice out with in a week or so im definitely in. Ive read almost all all threads im an avid AOKP/ CM user but need wifi calling in aome areas so try a lot of the TOUCHWIZ based roms also.

In my experience there are two subsets of ROMs.
1. Custom Roms (AOKP / Cyanogen mod / Paranoid Android): Most customizations less stability
2. Near stock Touchwiz(TW) ROMs or AOSP: Best stability and generally less customizations
What I suggest to people looking to install a ROM is to stick with a AOSP ROM that includes some customization, sure AOKP / CM is awesome and I love what they do but their ROMs are flaky and problem prone. My problem is that I really hate TW ROMs due to the lack of functions that I really enjoy in custom roms and the lack of being able to change certain features.
-Drag across the top to change brightness: Fixes my issue with auto brightness
-Hold back to kill
-Toggles
-Circle battery (though I think this is also in some)
-no annoying lockscreen -.-
One ROM I am looking at is Liquid Smooth because its an AOSP ROM with some AOKP customizations. Unfortunately for me that the only version so far that I have used with little issue is RC8 (with CM kernel) but I hear others have better luck than I do.
Also would like to point out that JB is being released (or has been) so some roms should improve on the stability.
Hi,
Was reading one post on PA G+ thread and this thought came to my mind, does the major roms comprise with the Project Butter feel of nexus?
Dont crucify me yet. Have been on PA since last 7 months but last week went back to stock rom of 4.2.2,rooted.
Loved all the good work they do, including others but do feel the buttery smoothness of stock is lost in custom roms.
Do you feel the same?
Just a friendly discussion.
Cheers,
Roy

Hmmm.. I think it's because of... A lot more customization than stock. A lot more - in some cases - going on under the hood.
But anyways, custom ROMs are meant to outperform stock right?
Bottom line.. It's your call. Stock or custom.
Edit: this should be on General section. Not a troubleshooting issue, but personal experience/discussion.
Sent from my Nexus
For me, custom roms are smoother than stock. Could be the fact that I use speed tweaks though.
I'm currently on PA 3.15 and so far it feels better than stock. But then again my update to 4.2.2 really slowed down my phone, so it very well could be a placebo effect. Either way, it's really smooth and rarely lags/slows down.
