I just wanna know about installing CWM Recovery in my arc s with a JB rom. Because there is no supported CWM for xperia arc s for JB.
And I am new to flashing kernals..i did my arc s to JB with fusion 5.4 anyhow but if i want to change the kernal do i need to reflash the rom as well?
And also I installed CWM recovery using X-parts before unlocking bootloader. Should I continue installing like that if i Go back to ICS...or should i follow a another way since now my arc has unlocked BL.
And also when to install the kernal before or after flasing the rom.
Thank You

Recovery is built within the kernel, so you do not need to install any recovery by yourself.
You can change kernel at any time, no need to reflash the ROM. Just make sure the new one is compatible with your ROM (JB kernel with JB ROM, ICS kernel with ICS ROM).
If you have unlocked BL, you can just flash any custom kernel (all of them should include a recovery), no need for X-Parts.

So do i need to clear any caches after flashing new kernal?
And also what is the best kernal for JB based on cm 10 for my arc s that supports 720p video recording and gives a good battery life.
Thank you

No need to clear any cache, if you change kernels.
There is currently only one JB kernel, that supports HD video recording. I will update this post, once I find it.
EDIT: LuPuS JB kernel, make sure you download the 720p version. Topic: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1885559

Hello People,
I have rooted and unlocked my Arc's boot loader successfully. Thanks to all of u guys.
But now I want to try ICS Roms on my Arc, I have installed CWM.
Please tell me how can i do that? Instructions are there but my arc is running on Gingerbread, So if I'll flash the ICS kernel, wont that be a problem? (Sorry, I'm a noob. Please Help)
Thanks in advance.
Current Firmware - LT15i_4.0.2.A.0.42_Generic Global (Rooted)
first you have to flash an ics kernel via fastboot. i recommend the stock kernel including cwm. then on the first boot you go into cwm and flash the ics rom
Use the the Advanced doom kernel, and then, on the recovery flash your phone with the rom.
but what about the wifi battery drain problem in stock ics kernel?
thanks guys I'm now running ICS on my Arc.
Hopefully my title didn't confuse anyone lol.
I was told the main reason for flashing a custom kernel is entering recovery mode, well if that's the case, I have an app called x-parts, it allows me to boot my xperia play in recovery mode without flashing a custom kernel. so....would I be able to flash a custom rom via x-parts WITHOUT having to flash a kernel?
IM HAVING THE HARDEST TIME TRYING TO GET CM7/CM9 ON MY PHONE, ANY HELP WOULD BE APPRECIATED!

I'm pretty sure you can use the same kernel for a CM7 ROM since stock and CM7 are the same Android version, basically.
However, to use an ICS based ROM, flashing a custom kernel is necessary.

It means that i can flash CM7 on stock???? Without flash a custom kernel??? If that is true then CM7 works on locked bootloader....
No. You must have a custom kernel for a custom ROM. Any ROMs that can be flashed on locked bootloader will say so explicitly. CM7 is not one of those.
Thanks for the info guys just curious to see how kernels tried into roms
Alright guys, im completely new to this and im very interested on starting to go around and learn some stuff in the Android world, specially with my Xperia Arc. I recently unlocked the bootloader via tespoint and installed an stable version of Cyanogenmod 9.1, however i found some things i would day prefer to have different, so for that i would like to know some things first before i start changing from rom to rom. I hope somebody would give a hand jeje.
1. To change from CM 9.1 to Xperia Pureness for instance, do i need to flash a new kernel on top of the FXP i already have on with CM 9.1?
2. If i would like to return to stock 4.0.4, would it be just flash the .ftf via flash tool?
3. Will flashing the 4.0.4 .ftf file via flashtool install the stock kernel and delete my FXP and CWM?
4. Does 4.0.4 stock works well with FXP kernel?
5. Every time im trying a new rom should i first flash the recommended kernel and then install via CWM?
Once again i hope someone would help me with those questions. i tried to find them on different threads but i couldn't get any with those specific questions...

1. don't know
2. yep
3. yep. FXP and CWM gone
4. don't know
5. entirely your choice. You have to ask yourself, do you want to use the kernel? how is the current kernel doing? what are the details of the kernel? etc.

1) Both are ICS based roms, so in theory it should work (don't forget wifi modules), but I'm not sure about it.
2) Correct.
3) When flashing .ftf in Flashtool there is an option to exclude kernel, so in theory you should keep the installed kernel with its options. But I never tried it.
4) Don't know.
5) Not necessary, unless you change ICS and JB roms.
1. Yes
2. Yes

4. No

Hi, I've had my Xperia play for a few weeks and feel like i want to install a new rom as the default 2.3.4 software is a bit sluggish. Ive already rooted and installed CWM and backed it up. I have a locked bootloader and the first instruction to installing the rom is to install a stock rom, Don't i already have that installed as i haven't installed a custom rom before? Should i just skip this step? Thanks in advance! My Model is R800i and the build is 4.0.2.A.0.42.

it depends on which kernel you want to use.
.42 firmware does not support custom partition layout, so in order to use kernel like Turbo Kernel by CosmicDan or Lupus Kernel by wedgess (both with custom partitions) you'll need to flash .62 firmware or newer, wipe userdata and system and then flash the kernel.
While this isn't needed if you want to use, for example, DoomKernel

Still havent answered my question, I dont really want to unlock my bootloader if its possible to just flash the rom but do i have to flash a stock rom even though i haven't installed a custom rom before as wouldnt i already have a stock rom? The rom is a GB rom so i dont have to unlock the bootloader, it even has installation instructions for locked bootloaders.

I've said you, you should skip this if you don't want to flash any kernel with custom partition layout
But remember that if you remain on stock kernel you cannot flash no other rom than stock based ones

Hello ...
two days ago i've unlocked and flashed custom kernel & rom (Super JB) on device Arc S LT18. I, and don't know why, used Flashtools to recover to 2.3.4 and after that installed the mentioned rom (yes i've cleared all). Now the device only boots if i use Menu + Power button. What the hell ? If i only use the power button, the green light flashes and nothing else (no boot). DO i need a clean wipe and all over again? Maybe i must flash original kernel 5.4. ?
After flashing the ROM in recovery, did you flash the patch for your device as mentioned in the installation instructions?

yes, i've flashed the patch after the rom. I really don't know what happened, was it the flashed kernel (that is the first time i've encounter the problem) ? or maybe that i've installed a stock rom (2.3.4) and didn't boot the device (and then proceed with the custom installation) ? or maybe it's the kernel, because i've flashed the Super Fusion and not the fusion 5.4
now i've installed the official CyanogenMod 10.2, but can't seem to fix this bug

you need to flash ics stock firmware 4.04 first then you can flash custom kernel then custom JB rom
jb rom cant's be flashed on gingerbread 2.3.4 roms, you have to be on stock ics 4.04

What difference does it make, if both kernel and /system partition are completely formatted anyway?

its your choice mate if you want to be on GB rom then flash gb 2.3.4 or if you want to be on ICS then flash ics 4.04 stock rom
but if you want to flash JB custom roms then you need to flash ics stock rom first.
you can either reover to ICS or GB via flashtool its upto you
well the cm 10.2 works really good and maybe i will test cm 11 (or any custom rom from 4.2 above). so i will try your suggestion and see what happens.
EDIT: well the stock browser crashed today -.-' ... will have to test further ... and the strange boot is kinda fixed (it was my fault because i didn't pushed the power button long enought lol)
EDIT 2: stock browser simply force close everytime i use it. google play store doesn't work well :/
