So I am moving onto a new phone so I will not be supporting this thread anymore. Please help each other the best you can. Also if anyone wants to take over and support this thread feel free. Last but not least if anyone wants to use any of the items I put into this also feel free. Remember that android is made possible with contrbutions from viewers like you!
Check out my new guide its much easier and automated now!!
Sorry but I no longer have the files that were in the zip as my laptop that they were on no longer has a charger so I really don't have a way to pull them off until I come up with extra funds to buy a charger for that dinosaur!
I have updated the commands so everything will be working correctly.
Please note this a guide to unrooting your device and returning it to stock, if you have nothing stock and didn't back anything up i.e. modded rom, changed recovery, eng. bootloader.
If you didn't follow the ultimate guide then you will not need to follow steps 1-7. Just follow from 8 on.
Also keep in mind this was created assuming you followed the ultimate guide to permaroot turning radio s=off and changing cid thus unlocking phone.
I am not responsible for any damage to your phone blah blah blah.
Also if I am incorrect in any of these steps someone please let me know.
Also this is just a guide that I wrote using all the others. Please thank and donate to grankin01 for providing the original guide and also thank/donate to tiger013 for providing a stock nandroid. Also thank Football for providing new rom.
With that said here we go:
Download the PD15IMG file and rename it to PD15IMG.zip
1. Copy PD15IMG.zip and "part7backup-whatevernuberitscalled.bin" to the root of your sdcard
2. Connect your phone to your computer and navigate to your sdk folder then type adb push gfree /data/local
3. Open up terminal emulator or adb shell and type "su" press enter to get root privileges.
4. Type "cd /data/local" and hit enter
5. Type "chmod 777 gfree" and hit enter to make the program executable.
6. Now type "./gfree -f" press enter to run gfree again. It will disable wp on the emmc and remove the brq filter in the kernel. (as well as make another backup. delete this)
7. Now run the "dd if=/sdcard/part7backup-whatevernumberitscalled.bin of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p7" and it should show the output:
xxxx bytes in
xxxxbytes out
xxxxxxxxxx copied in xxxxxxxxxxx
8. Run "sync" and then reboot.
9. Let phone load then boot into bootloader again by holding volume down and pressing power
10. Let it load image and select yes to update.
11. Let it do its work it will reboot once this is normal.
And that should be it. Enjoy stock rom.
Great job! I un-rooted worked fine! Then I re-rooted worked fine also!

I assume this will not work if you have made a backup with clockwork? Also your instructions say apply nandroid backup, but there is no option in recovery for appy nandroid backup. There are options to update from update.zip and another one from a zip file. The folder inside you unroot package is not a zip file?

Well like I said this was done using no backups made.
Under clockworks recovery theres an option for backups and restore - this is the nandroid restore.

This is awesome! I'm getting a replacement mt4g in the mail soon, now I will be able to send my existing phone back 'unrooted'. Thank you!
Is this unroot like out of the box type deal. So that i can get future ota updates. I used ultimate guide to perm root. I am using stock rom. I am notsure if i should just do unroot.zip to unroot for future ota updates.

If performed correctly is should take you back to out of the box stock.
(in theory)
I'm guessing you can't do this strictly from terminal emulator?

I did S=off with it (plus radio) with root explorer and terminal emulator only. It was much easier and quicker.

so...?
I put the nandroid file on my sdcard, but in recovery when i go to restore there it says no files. What do I need to do to get this to work. I have a replacement coming to me so I need to figure this out.
Edit: Sorry I'm an idiot. I got it know. Thank you so much for posting this.
Edit2: Crap! Ok I have s=on now but i still have hboot 0.86.0000 Shouldn't I have the old one now?
Where is the "part7backup" located? Also, what is it?
this sucks... i followed everything perfectly but now my recovery is screwed up ugh this is so frustrating i have that stupid phone with a red triangle thing when i try to boot into recovery (yes im aware its supposed to be stock recovery not clockwork)
When i press volume down + Power button and go to HBoot
it tells me that i am using Clockwork MOD Recovery v3.0.0.6
i want to update it to latest version i downloaded recovery-clockwork-5.0.2.0-buzz and copy this Zip file on SD card and installed Clockwork MOD Recovery v5.0.2.0
i can see that it changes menu & font color into blue
but when ever i restarts or shut down the phone and go back to HBoot ( volume down + Power button ) i see the same old v3.0.0.6
any suggestions...
help
use this from your bootloader, you need to rename it pc49img.zip (make sure its not named .zip.zip) it should come up saying recovery update, flash? push volume up. after that let it boot to to the boot animations, the battery pull. take out the sdcard and then reboot the bootloader. then go to recovery and it should be up to 5.0.2.0
enjoy

Android Flasher...
I have used the following utility to flash the radio, bootscreen, and, just a while ago, the CWM recovery version to v5.0.2.0. As Buzz ain't listed on the list of supported devices, I used Other Device, booted the unit to flashboot, and flashed whichever I wanted by way of the interface.

just the update.zip should do. are you definatly s-off?
yes i am s-off. still not working.
Some steps that I told to another person wanting to update their recovery.
Do you have fastboot?
do you have fastboot in with your SDK tools?
Download [RECOVERY][MOD][Wildfire][02-Nov-2011] Clockwork 5.0.2.7.111102
Extract the zip, and rename to recovery.img to make it simple in ADB.
move the recovery.img to the same folder as your fastboot is in so FOR ME it will be in C:\ ANDROID \ ANDROID-SDK \ TOOLS \ recovery.img
as fastboot is located in ANDROID-SDK / TOOLS / fastboot.exe
then follow these commands EXACTLY as I tell you.
reboot phone in to bootloader - Power off, then HOLD volume down and press power, use volume keys for up and down and select fastboot.
now, open command line and start ADB - This part I expect you to know if you have a rooted phone, but just in case run these commands: - start adb, remount, and open a shell - the commands are "adb remount", then enter "adb shell"
1) adb start-server
2) adb remount
3) adb shell
then enter the command "fastboot flash recovery recovery.img"
FINALLY, enter "fastboot reboot"
Recovery update complete... try rebooting into recovery to confirm this and it should show a new recovery
Click Thanks if this works

I'm guessing that since your bootloader is unlocked, you should be able to flash 4ext or CWM recovery through fastboot (search), and then flash SuperSU.zip (from Chainfire's thread) through recovery. That'll put Superuser.apk and the su binary in the system partition and give you root access.

flash it used fastboot (adb tools)
1.Turn off your phone
2. Hold the volume down button + power until you boot to a white screen.
3. Use the volume rocker to select FASTBOOT then press the power button to select it.
4. Connect your phone.
5. Open up a windows command prompt and navigate to your sdk tools or platform tools folder. tools (c:\android-sdk-windows\tools) or platform-tools (c:\android-sdk-windows\platform-tools) (ore where you have the adb)
6. Type FASTBOOT DEVICES to make sure your computer "sees" your phone and is ready to flash the recovery. You should get a serial number and then the word fastboot as the output.
7. Type fastboot flash recovery recovery.img and press enter. Give it a minute to do it's thing. You should get a message that says writing recovery and success.
(you must have the recovery.img on the same place as fastboot)
8. Unplug your phone and use the volume rocker to select BOOTLOADER and then again to select RECOVERY and you should be booted into the recovery

Yes, but it's PD98IMG.zip, otherwise the phone won't recognize it . To flash recovery in fastboot in the suggested way you need ENG S-OFF, wich I don't actually recommend to flash, unless it's the modified ENG HBOOT in the Hack Kit. If you want to flash the PD98IMG.zip file in fastboot, follow this:
Boot in fastboot and plug the phone (you will see fastboot usb)
Open a CMD as Admin or Terminal as root in the PC (and navigate to where the file is located)
Now type in CMD:
fastboot oem rebootRUU (you will get a black screen with silver HTC)
fastboot flash zip <nameoffile.zip>
When it is done (you will see OKAY. finished at the bottom of the cmd session), type:
fastboot reboot-bootloader
Then check that is correctly installed.
If not just name the file PD98IMG.zip, put it in the root of the sdcard and reboot in hboot until you are prompted to update....:good:

running the Hack Kit with S-OFF is useless. It will probably jam you up. If you wan to root, then finde SU image and flash it or find the flashable zip file.
Here you are one: http://downloads.androidsu.com/superuser/Superuser-3.0.6-efgh-signed.zip or find newer version here:

No, flashing SU will give you root access. If you are already S-OFF don't run the Hack Kit. The hack kit does exactly that...gives you S-OFF and Root....there's no need to do that again.
Just out of curiousity, since I didn't activate the s-off, what are the chances of this being done using HTC dev?
Also, should this be the case, is is gonna affect the root process in any way? I just wonna be sure that I don't miss anything before rooting, especially since the last time I did something like this successfully was 2 years ago on a G1:

Well, you will see Recovery work. It will flash the file and follow the instructions in the Binary Updater file. It usually replaces the old version and push the new one.
There's nothing to do but to flash the file. You don't need to wipe anything at all...It is quite simple actually. Just reboot when are told to do so...nothing can go wrong.

Do I need to unlock bootloader and root the phone to do it, or I can do the upgrade without doing that, some other way, so I don t lose the warranty.
Thank you.
You could try putting the zip file into the internal memory and rename it to update.zip and boot to stock recovery and flash it from there.. Normally the ota file would get saved into /cache/ folder and flashed by the system from there....
I didn't try it as I'm receiving this update officially as part of the user trial program

Put OTA in internal storage.
Got to HBOOT, start recovery.
PRess volume up+power
Select flash zip from internet storage.
Select the ota.zip and flash.
Thats it.
To remove watermark, check s-off root on modaco.com
And follow the steps in post #1.
First and foremost, please know that I have searched and searched again for hours and really have exhausted what in my opinion is my skill level for the rooting process. Previously hacked a PSP but that seemed easier than this.
I have tried the one click method and I have tried the HTCDev method. Both to no avail. I've run the .bat, I've tried the cmd cd Download cd OneXRoot... I couldn't get the One click .exe to run on my Windows XP even after installing .net framework. Can anyone help? I will divulge phone software versions, firmware etc if anyone decides to help me... And please only comment if you can specifically help... No trolls, no haters, no unconstructive comments.
Sorry for the noobism...
Thank you.

Hope that helps
I promise you all those methods do not work. I tried to run the root.bat access denied. I tried the one where you open up cmd and type cd Download, access denied... Finally I tried One Click but the .exe wouldn't open due to wrong .net framework, which I then downloaded but I was told by XP was not able to install 4.0.3...
Obviously I am going to need a work around on this but like I say One Click is no good for me... I'm going to reply again with my phone's info... I'm guessing the cmd way will be best to eventually get to work for me...

have you got your unlocktoken.bin from HTC Dev? May be best to do it manually
---------- Post added at 08:29 PM ---------- Previous post was at 08:17 PM ----------
have a careful read through this, this is the most complete guide for rooting manually, if you don't want to backup to start with you can go straight for unlocking your bootloader (after that to installing the recovery, then to installing the rom )

Hi mate, firstly u need to install the SDK etc,
Then you unlock your bootloader
Then you can install the custom recovery
Then you need to install the super user app (or SU etc) This will give your rom Root privileges (i.e you can install mods etc) This is not installing a custom rom
If you want to install a custom rom you can skip the step above as all custom roms have these root privileges.
Download your rom and stick it on your SD card
Make a backup through the custom recovery (you can revert back to stock if things go tits up)
Boot into fastboot and flash the boot.img via fastboot commands (or use a fastboot kit if one is supplied with the rom)
Go into recovery, flash your rom and reboot
The above is just summarizing whats on the guide I gave you so you should know what order you need to do things and where to look on the guide
If I do this and unlock the bootloader**** sorry predictive text!
