So I know the rule about never accepting otas but I was asked a question and couldn't remember. So if I accept an ota will it brick my phone or will it just update and unroot?
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
depends on what you did to your phone with root access.
are you on stock? ROM?
Yea stock rom just rooted
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
Well if you are on stock and you rooted, you will most likely lose your root (although some posts around here say that root aces is preserved during update in some rare cases).
If you are on a custom rom (e.g. if you installed an update using a custom recovery) and you are updating to a stock update then you will be likely screwing your phones system. depending on where you messed (or let a programmer mess using custom recovery or Rom managers) you could be bricking your phone as well since there are updates for boot and recovery in the stock updates to 4.0.2 and 4.0.4 (I don't count 4.0.3 since google pulled it off their site).
If you want a stock version of the newest android for your GN make it a manual patch by following this guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1391881 make sure you do flash the boot, recovery and radio as well...
But before you do that check in with the forum thread or website were you got your custom rom or root method and ask them for advice, Yeah do that! It's the safest way to do something when you know how others got to the point where you wanna go!
Thx alot

Please let us know how things worked out for you.
Hint: after following the steps above you are on the official google builds. Nice thing about that is you get new android versions as updates on the very second they are released. And most things that come with root are already available in the unrooted system (except overclocking) so why bother about root and stuff when you as a non-developing user can acces more priveleges on stock while rom builders for other phones try to keep up with YOUR system?

This is the stock 4.1.2 official sprint update MA6.
You may have to flash stock recovery to install it. Rename file update. Zip and place on the root of internal storage.
Then you have to reroot. It's claimed the voodoo app works for quick reroot.
This is a direct link to the Google servers
Enjoy.

This is what I'm about to use. It installs all pieces of the LJ7 firmware including recovery and radio. There's a root zip you can flash afterward to keep SU access. After that, I will setup SuperSu Pro to survive OTA updates and then run the MA6 OTA through the stock recovery. If you don't have SuperSu Pro or VooDoo OTA, you can always flash TWRP through Odin, and then flash your root zip, boot and then make your backup of the stock ROM.

As long as you can preserve root, I think taking official updates is a good idea. You get the rom, you get the radio, you get any additional firmware updates, and you have a new base from which to keep your stock backup that everyone says you ought to keep. Besides, with Samsung, it's so easy to root a device. Just load Odin and flash a recovery. Flash an su.zip and boom, you're back in business. It's not like taking an update on an HTC device where you have to worry about the new boot loader (unless you had S-Off).
Hate to be *that guy* buuuut.
A.) This does not belong in the Development section. The sticky here says what belongs and what doesn't, and stock ROM patches are not custom development.
B.) This was already in the general section. No need to repost.

Don't think it will. You'll need to go back to LJ7 or just give it a few days and someone will post the full stock ROM - hopefully will all of the root/no root and wipe data/preserve data permutations.

Flashed rerooted with voodoo took 2 minutes to reroot.
run flawlessly and the ma4 mods and some lj7 mods seem to work also.

So I have my S4 unlocked and am using it with Metro now that they started to offer SIM cards. Everything works great with the stock T-Mo ROM. However, I would just for a day or two like to use the Metro ROM. If anyone is willing to upload a copy or knows where I can get one, let me know. Thanks.
Also waiting on this anyone have any info. Also if anyone does upload or find one will this stock rom bring everything back to stock including the recovery mode to make it look as if nothing ever happened. I guess what im really hoping for is a stock firmware anyone have a download link to one. or know of any info.
You guys should be able to use samsung keis .I used it to get back to stock when odin failed on me and it works .However you must provide the full model number and serial number of the device for it to work and it works like odin but its slower but it works it always a good when you have options especially when you need to revert to stock rom in order to send it in for repair's or exchange after you have downloaded samsung keis on your pc or laptop go ahead set it up and you will see the tabs at the top it will be the one on the right click it and follow the directions to the letter and if you've done everything correctly it will install the stock firmware and rom to your device and when its done it will reboot the s4 and your back to stock good luck

Hey thanks for the advice but for some reason samsung has not support for our device yet i installed kies before reading this trust me i tried looking everywhere for the stock firmware. in keys it just says your device is not supported. but what is weird is i dont know if i should call it a tmobile phone or just a knock off tmobile phone reason for this is. in google play store if on browser it asks u witch device to install to and it says the correct device number but at the end states tmbile. now even in kies it does this it says m919n tmb for tmobile. so im not sure what to do should i just flash tmobile firmware and then just unlock it cuz i mean from everything im coming up with it just seems that this s4"metropcs" phone is just a tmobile phone with an n and if thats the case a tmo firmware should work on it right??
Before you start flashing firmware's did you take out the battery .because thats where you can confirm that it is a sgh m919 if there is another letter at the end of m919 then you should do more research that way you dont end up with a bricked device. However if it's sgh m919 I would flash the M919 firmware for tmobile and call it a day and by the way you can get the stock firmware from chain fire's thread

Since you have a M919n, notice the N at the end of the model number, why don't you do a factory restore and save the image before you boot up again? Once you have that back up you can then upload it and share
This is all assuming you have the stock Metro ROM to begin with.

I really need the Metro Rom cause I just rooted it and wanted to unroot it and I couldn't find the metropcs stock firmware so I used T-Mobile's by accident and I can't switch back to The metro rom! I really need it.

Ok, here's my story. I rooted my MetroPCS Samsung Galaxy S4. I wanted to unroot it but used the T-Mobile .tar file when I was unrooting it and now when I boot my phone, it shows T-Mobile on the booting proccess, though when I am brought to the lock screen, in the bottom it says MetroPCS. Does anyone know how to go back to original stock firmware? I don't know how to get it for the MetroPCS version.
Tired of waiting. Went with 4.3 GPe, haven't looked back. Owning a Nexus 7 I couldn't be happier. Still wouldn't mind trying out that Metro ROM for fun. There is a demand for it. Just saying.

Thx, I look foward to it, also I have a question. How exactly do you upload a tarp stock backup, my family member also has the galaxy s4 from metro and I could borrow it from him and upload it but the problem is I don't know how to.
Well number one you will need to root it and numder 2 you will need to install a custom recovery and number 3 once your custom is installed I suggest cwm and the person that needs the tar backup must also have cwm custom recovery as well .boot into recovery and do a complete backup .When thats done go to cwm backup folder and you should see the tar backup .now you upload it to where ever you need it and that s it on your part is done .Now it's up to person you've uploaded to and all he or she needs to do is download it and then move it to the cwm backup folder and when thats done your ready to flash the backup all should go well as long as the stock tar backup doesn't get corrupt .good luck

hey i have the firmware that i got from Samsung since i work for metropcs ill be willing to pass it on to anyone who can use it to make a rom for the device anyone want it just message me
So, a while back, i decided to convert my ATT galaxy s3 to a tmobile build so i could run LTE from tmobile on it. Now, my problem is, i want to revert back to full att again, in which i have tried, but im getting something wrong (Status 7 errors and what not, i feel related to the changeover) and i don't want to brick my phone trying over and over. I could use some help with what ill need to FULLY get back to at least stock so i can root and install a fresh kitkat rom. Any help is appreciated!
I attached a screen of my build as well.
How exactly did you go about this? What were the zips you used to do this? What zips are you trying to flash? These are all things that can help us out in figuring out what went wrong.
Well i had read around of a test rom created especially for tmobiles GS3 variant that ran on att in order to run their LTE. So i flashed that rom and i believe custom kernels and a modem. Only thing is i cant backtrack what i did and the original files i used are lost.
Anybody? Hehe I really need to get to a computer soon ..
That's an easy fix.
Odin back to a stock 4.1.x, rooted or unrooted.
Then on first boot hold volume up + home button and to a factory reset. Done.
PS: make sure you're not running 4.3 OTA latest bootloader or you will get a semi reversible brick.

Just checked for updates as described in other threads and it found the latest 4.3 update. I have read both positive and negative responses to the update. Some found things they used in 4.1.2 that are being taken away. Some like the new features in 4.3. It will vary from person to person whether the ROM is better for them or not. Fact is, all devices (current and future) are moving forward.
Should I just install the update? Should I make a copy of my current setup with one of the recoveries, then odin back, and run triangle away?
Strange. I went ahead and updated. Even after doing two complete resets, I still have SU app from 4.1.2. I guess it carried the program during the upgrade process?

it basically dirty flashed the new update over your 4.1.2. I honestly didn't care much about the KNOX boot loader since my warranty is already over. but, I find not having to flash devil kernel so much easier w/ less lag.

Hopefully someone will develop something that resets the KNOX counter. Triangle worked for 4.1.2, but does not work in 4.3 for me.
BTW, what 4.3 ROMs do you like, since we have the new bootloader? I just installed TWRP and trying to decide on a ROM.

I don't believe there's a workaround it yet. but I'm even sure. you can scroll around through the threads and see if there is. what I did was just update it anyways and tripped my KNOX boot loader to ox1. I didn't have warranty anyways so I'm not tripping over it. and then I just rooted it, flashed cwm and started to flash ROMs.

Thank you. So is the root process the same? Usually i flash twrp with odin then install su permissions then I flash away. Or do I have to use another method? Really all I want is the modem software so I could just wait till someone pulls it out they usually do. I always liked c heckin out the latest stock rom but always changed back to aokp.

if you're going to end up on aokp, you should just stay on the 4.1.2 boot loader. the update to me is really only for TW roms because the stock ROMs are working just fine w/o the new boot loader.
