Why would u buy Google edition S4 vs. Regular S4 pricing wise - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S 4

The GE S 4 cost ruffly around $650 while the regular one cost $580. Considering u can install a GE ROM on the regular one. is there any benefits?

Pretty much what you said. Why would you buy a GE s4, when youre paying for the features of the regular s4?
Sent from my SGH-M919 using xda app-developers app

If i could go back in time I would have waited for the GE S4.
I've tried many GE ROMs and none are perfect yet. Like one rom i tried didn't have bluetooth working, another I couldnt get NFC to work, etc etc. I believe these ROMs don't even support direct OTA updates which is sorta a convenience I would like to have on a GE device.
This and the fact that all the samsung stuff is pretty much useless to me.
On another note, I wonder why one couldnt just dump an entire system ROM of a stock GE s4 onto a carrier variant GTI9505, instead of having to rely on these slightly modified GE ROMs.

Push it down to $450 and i would, then I would port things i like from touchwiz over via a new rom.
But at or near the same price, no.

No like my S4 and custom roms who cares about google

The 4.2.2 or 4.3 GE roms you flashed are TEST BUILDS, on top of that, they were LEAKED, you should keep that in mind.

unless youre able to get some kind of major discount, i do not see the pt of buying a google edition gs4

If you don't care about touchwiz I could see it making sense on ATT since the bootloader is locked. But, on tmobile it doesn't seem to make much sense.

I would love to support Google and buy an unlocked phone, but t-mobile had their version for $529. That's a lot less than Google's price. Currently running CM and couldn't be happier.

I was thinking of buying a s4 active, but I already bought m919
"Give a man a fish you feed him for a day, teach him to fish, you feed him for a lifetime." In other words help others find an answer don't just give it to them.

There is no benefit in buying the GE S4 and I mean NONE.....
So now I guess I have to explain why?
Simple..
GE is not Aosp, it still uses TW framework, a truer nexus feel can be made by flashing cm or something like that. As what was mentioned already you can also flash the GE Roms. I also read that either HTC or Sammy would allow current users to install the official GE rom if they desire to.
Basically same phone different rom. Not worth an extra penny.
However I'm pretty sure we aren't the target consumers anyway. Google sells unlocked phones and for the S4 specs the price is worth it. For non tmo customers anyway.

Who prefers to stay on STOCK?????

i'm curious if anyone here on XDA prefers being on stock. How come? You don't like roms? root? Just curious on what people that love to stay on stock.
Thanks.

I am kinda in that boat
I just got my note2 and have since flashed recovery / and clean rom however I tend to like sticking stockish till I know the water temp so to speak. I tried to just do the root with out changing the counter but OTA's killed my root. Hence the twrp and clean rom...
I just cant win... heh.

On many phones I have stayed on stock for stability and feature set. In many cases when you go to another rom (especially AOSP) you lose TW features, S-Pen, etc... and in many cases I find not everything is 100%
That said the Note II development is fantastic. Many of the TW based roms give you everything you get with stock, but with more. AOSP you lose the TW feature set but it is amazingly stable and fast with a whole lot of other features.
With my S3 I could not find a single rom that I did not have problems on, but with the Note II I have a harder time deciding WHICH rom to use :good:

I agree with this guy. Even with my acer liquid mt when I rooted it and used the leaked gingerbread rom for it, the camera (which i use a lot got messed up and would over expose the pictures to white messes of garbage) and I noticed that after switching back to the normal stock rom with root, the camera would screw the video with red green and blue lines...gross I know...
And plus, just like my old ipod touch 2g (which doesnt work cuz the battery is dead. big surprise CRapple) it looked as normal as it should, but behind the curtain, the device was screaming at me to stop, every little tweak, hack, or anything I could do to the device. (Except install android on it because the project cut off 2Gs)
So what im saying is, its more fun to screw with the stock app.
Dont like the boatware?
Download a root app uninstaller.
Dont like anything about most devices?
Someone else doesnt like it either, and theyre smarter than you and figured out how to change that.

C.FLAT, "I'm staying in stock to keep the slow motion video feature. And because CM 10's camera is really glitchy"
If you are that concerned with the camera features working why not flash a ROM like Scrosler's CLEAN ROM ATT SE. It made from ATT base. Completely stock without the bloatware. Everything works perfectly and you are not at the mercy of your carrier to recieve OTA's instead your at Scroslers lol. But seriously, I would much rather get/wait for updates from a DEV here on XDA (Where I can talk directly to the DEV and or people in the thread also using the ROM) instead of waiting for carriers to take forever and you can't directly talk to the team of people who made the Official ROM . So for me if you want stock look and feel with no bloatware and is more customizable than actual stock I would go with a ROM based or made from complete stock base. Just my 2 cents

International I9505 Rom working on T-Mobile S4 M919!!

So I went ahead and flashed the i9505 Wanam Rom from here and it works great on my M919. The rom doesn't have a modem so I figured it would be safe and sure enough it was. Here's the link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2283194
No wipe is required either. I simply flashed it using CWM and I now have a GT-I9505 model with all T-Mo bloatware gone! I really like the blue dialer on this too!
You will get reboot notifications, to remove that simply download "Bloatware Freezer" from Playstore and freeze the app called SEAndroid. That should take care of it.

No Tmo features...obviously.
Yes, a lot of people don't realize their options for goodies go beyond just the specific m919 forum. Check out the general international S4 I9505 forums. It's were I spend most my time.
Development is lagging for the m919 variant. There are only a few ROMs & choices, with slow updates.... and plenty of time has passed since release, so I'm not sure how much better it will get. It's the one negative part about Sammy devices....fragmentation of the same model. It would be nice to see a majority of elite Devs working on the same model....like the One.
MANY of the mods/themes/ROMs etc...work great with our device. The radio is the only difference between various 9505 models.
Cheers!
Awesome. But who puts a modem in custom roms now days? Lol Now that I can see that this phone is actually the same hardware as the international we can have roms from there too..... In this case if a leak of a newer android update comes out we can have it port over. And not wait for tmobile,,,
If that the case than AT&T, VERIZON, AND SPRINT can be ported all like on the s3 but the fun part is the even international too
I hope this all works so far I'm very happy with wicked but more options are never a bad thing

Wow I had no idea I could use i9505 roms. I thought i may be able to but wasn't sure. Awesome.

lol give us more time, mate. would you rather we release untested ROMs? i'm sure there are a number of us floating around here that have a ROM we can put out right this second but it is good practice to test first and ensure there are no issues. this can take a little bit. i myself am in testing phase. maybe the phone has been out a while, but i personally have only had one for 2 and a half weeks. a lot of stuff in the other sections will be ported over. i have to get a good working and stable base out first before i start adding in more tweaks that will seemingly overwhelm most typical users.
also, please be weary of flashing an entire ROM from i9505 section. if there are CSC bits contained within it, you won't have a signal like you're supposed to.
Totally agree with the previous poster. These things take time to make.
With that said this is good news. Hopefully, we can get a dev to port these over with TMO features & Csc files.
I know AT&T GN2 had an awesome dev that ported Int GN2 over with options for TMO, AT&T & Canadian carriers.

Any ROM made for I9505, you can use. Make sure the ROM doesn't have a modem baked into it (ROMs usually don't, but you must make sure). You will then have to download and app called "Bloatware Freezer" from Play Store and freeze the system app called 'SEAndroid'

Works great, even support video call like you see in the Korean dramas. Too bad no US provider supports that
Any way if we manually added or flashed the T-Mobile bloat we could use visual voicemail at least?
Also do you feel that the battery life and overall performance is better in these ROMs?
Can we still use 4g/ 4g lte with these ROMs automatically or do we need to mess with the APN to a certain extent?
Thank you. I am considering flashing because I'm loving those ROMs and themes in the international forums especially that dark android theme that doesn't work well with our phones

No after reading a few posts the updates will be sent to Samsung and they will have a time frame to release it for the google version.

Since they will have identical hardware, the G.E. rom can be dumped and turned into a custom rom with ease I assume. S4 will have 100% stable TouchWiz and AOSP (so to speak). I'm speculating as I haven't looked too much into this though.

Ive come from all AOSP devices and I have to say it doesn't compliment the hardware on this phone imo.

I see pros and cons with the google s4. While it will be great that the device will be up to date with the latest android, the vanilla android won't be able to make use of all the hardware features the device has to offer. But a big con with google s4 is that it only comes with 16GB internal storage.

The obvious difference will be that everything will function properly.
There is ALWAYS something broke or not quite right with AOSP/CM Ports. Bluetooth, tethering, camera... you name it.
So...its obviously a little different than... "why not just flash CM or AOSP now!?"... Official Google support for the S4 is a HUGE deal.
This means nothing for me. I'm not about to pay for a device that I can do the same thing with my already owned sgs4. Flash an aosp rom. But maybe it's more than that I would assume

Whose to say this device something won't be broken. And it's quite obvious stuff will be broken but that's okay with me for any rom. I know I can expect a fix a lot faster.
For me, it's an overpriced and enlarged Nexus 4.
It lacks all the Samsung features (I know some people don't like that). It only has the vanilla Android on it which will have the same features as the Nexus 4.
Why do I need to pay $649.99 for the phone which has the same features as the one that only cost $299.99 (Nexus 4)? I know S4 is bigger, faster, blah blah blah but it's $350 different.
On the other hand, with AOSP rom available, for sure we will have better 3rd party ROM such as CM, AOKP, etc. I am actually happy to see that.

The aosp roms I've used have all been very stable for the most part. Just because Google will be releasing it does not mean it'll be completely bug free. I just don't find it exciting if it's not utilizing all the new tech Samsung has added.
No one really knows what's in store, but losing the ir blaster and the other sensors' functionality seems like a step backwards imo. I've owned all the nexus devices and have flashed aosp ROMs on every phone I have owned. It just doesn't excite me on this S4.

Samsung feels 4.1.2 is pretty much bug free. Now they are struggling to keep up with the booms in technology and software as well. New versions of Android are coming out quicker than Sammy's new phones. Why put out a 4.2.2 when 4.3 is out? So now they concentrate on getting out new phones with 4.3 on it and then they start working on updates to the dozens of existing models. 4.3 was announced as coming to the S3 BUT that will be the international first then US months later depending on carriers.
What is in 4.2.2 that you MUST have? There are 4.3 AOSP ROMs all over if you want that.

Going to have to agree with this. 4.3 even on the best ROMs are alphas at best.
The only semi stable AOSP/CM ROMs are 4.2.2 and under.
And all AOSP/CM ROMs since have a weird bug with Instagram or third party apps and their front facing camera.

Since posting this thread I've used CM10.2 Nightlies and also ParanoidAndroid 3.99 RC2.. I can honestly say (and this is of course my own opinion and result) that CM has been a better experience. I use my phone a bunch for little things, internet, text messaging, FBing, Pictures, XDA, games, etc and haven't had any problems with CM.. Only reason I switched back from PA to CM was honestly only that Candy Crush wasn't compatible with PA (and I barely play CC anymore lol).. I've just lost my ability to use Triangle Away for some reason.. It was working on the CM10.2 09/07 nightly, flashed PA and didn't work. Then flashed back to CM but the 09/26 and still not working, flashed the new kernel and TA still gets stuck at Detecting Packages.. Wish someone would tell me why.. I've posted in like 5 different places and nobody responds

My biggest issues are surrounding bluetooth - I experience issues related to pops when switching songs - almost sounds like a non-flushed buffer, and sometimes major lag... almost like the app has crashed, but it doesn't... it comes back. This was on SlimBean 4.3...
I haen't tried CM or the others primarily because I reverted to 4.1.2 for stability.
My best bet on Triangle Away is to run it just before you boot into download mode... (that SHOULD work...) Samsung introduced stuff back when 4.0 came out where the triangle would get re-set whenever you'd boot into an altered recovery...

Note II - the 4.4.2 update - discussion thread

Aww man I cant wait im not sure if this thread has already been made but thank god they have not forgot about us. :victory:
Woohoo...Samsung finally gets around to publishing their own bloated take on something we've had for months.
If tw still look the same with nothing extra that's useful I won't Bother. I use to like Samsung but once you get to the top there's only one way to go. Hope I'm wrong and they give us something nice, if not I'll stay on stock Android.

SPRINT GALAXY NOTE II ONLY:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2524130
The good thing about this will be the new customization with all the KK ROM's we do have available once the developers get the KK source from the official release right?, most of them are pretty stock without as many options as my PACman 4.3.1 JB ROM has right now.
Wonder if I'll still get the ota if Knox is removed from otherwise stock 4.3 setup.

The official kit kat tw Rom actually isn't coming with much bloat at all.. and Samsung has revamped tw to be more streamlined. I'm actually looking forward to it since I use the spen alot and upgrading to a Note 3 is really a waste of money.. I can wait for the Note 4

Can you uninstall all the utterly useless Samsung apps? Does the OS image weigh any less than 1GB? If not they may have made it run better, but they didn't debloat it.
And I *highly* doubt that Samsung got rid of their own useless apps they spent money developing.
Hopefully Google comes out with a phablet form device. Then I'm done with Samsung. Might go to an LG next. Screw Knox and Samsung.

I have had only a few android devices (kyocera zio, og evo, evo 3d, note 2, and kyocera torque) and samsung has been the easiest to work with. As far as knox is concerned (on note 2) it is nothing to worry about. The first day 4.3 was out we (me and lorjay) already had knox nullified and on day 2 root was working. While the same may not be true with new samsung devices. Point is knox means nothing to xda users/devs since there will always be a way around it.
4.4 on the note 3 looks okay and should be a better upgrade than 4.3 although we will have to wait and see. For myself i like aosp better since i found most of the things i like from samsung in 3rd party apps. Only thing I miss and can't get is a feature from note 3 mods (air command).

You've always been able to uninstall bloat.. it's one of the main reasons for having Titanium Backup. And a simple Google search will confirm my above statement. It's still gonna have bloat, just not nearly as much.

Anyone heard any updates about our release yet? I keep seeing it for so many other phones.

By then i'm pretty sure most of us will have upgraded to a new phone but for those who keep their phones for 2+ years it will be nice to not be left out of KK update. Who knows I might keep my Note 2 for a while longer... I have no problems with it and it works just fine and does everything I need and then some.
I guess we either going to get 4.4 in April or May

Probably on the later side. US carriers never update to the "latest" version of Android...Google always gets another release out before carriers choose to finally re-write their ROMs to get up-to-date.
