[Q] Phone does not boot, red light flashes, is it hard bricked? - Galaxy Note II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I woke up to find my note2 stuck on the samsung logo, so i went to the recovery menu and cleared the cache. When I went to restart the phone, it wont start up.
1) Nothing appears on the phone
2) When i press the power button, the red light on top flashes but thats it
3) it doesnt go to recovery mode with the power, vol+
4) it doesnt go to download mode with the power, vol-
5) Battery should be fully charged, when plug into the phone and the wall, nothing happens even when i left it there for half a day.
6) Switched out with friends battery and nothing happens as well.
7) Plug into PC Mac, multiple computers, nothing happens on the phone or computer. Nothing is detected on that usb port.
Anyone know what I can do to try and fix this before I send it to a repair shop?
Thanks

In switched off condition, if it takes charge then it must be go to DOWNLOAD MODE (home+power+vol.down). Then restock through odin or use 'mskip toolkit'

[Q] Brick? (Phone won't stay in download mode)

Hey guys, I'm not sure if my phone is dead. It was running fine this morning, Task & Ktoonsez' AOKP with Ktoonsez kernel. However, I tried to unlock it a little while ago and it wouldn't go on. It boots to the splash screen, both normally and going into recovery, but it doesn't last long enough to go into recovery or boot normally. I try to boot into download mode and it boots, but the phone turns off after a few seconds.
I tried to flash back to stock in Odin, but the phone doesn't stay in download mode long enough for the flash to finish.
I'm not sure what to do. Any help would be appreciated.
Pretty sure if it was bricked it wouldn't boot into download mode at all. It sounds like it is losing power or something. The only thing I can think of is maybe your battery is bad. Download mode can run off of USB power if you remove the battery after booting into it. Maybe plug your phone in and boot into download mode, then take your battery out before it shuts off and see if it stays on.

No dice. It just did the same thing it's been doing. I went into download, popped the battery, it stayed in download for a few seconds, and then powered off.
Could it be a faulty power button? The phone is constantly vibrating by itself and if the power button was messed up it could be causing the phone to leave download mode.

As far as I can tell pressing or holding the power button in download mode will only restart it, but won't shut it off. Also it takes about 10 seconds. I don't think it's your power button.

Ah, okay.
In that case, though, I have no clue what's causing the problem here. At this point the only thing I can do is enter download mode for a few seconds, but I can't get it to be enough time to flash a ROM in Odin.

Might be a dumb question... Is your battery charged? I'd plug it in for a while off and see if the battery logo comes up and than try putting it in recovery or download.

I tried that too. It's been plugged in for a while and the same thing happens. It just stays in download mode for a few seconds and then turns off. Also, I tried flashing back to stock in Odin but it failed because the phone turned off before the flash could finish. Now the phone says "Firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select Recovery mode in Kies and try again."
So it's basically stuck in download mode cause of a corrupted flash. If I could get the phone to stay in download mode, I could flash it back to stock with Odin, but it's not giving me enough time at this point.
I'm running into the same problem currently, I was wondering if you were able to find a solution. Same ROM same Kernel. I've been using my current version of the ROM since October and haven't flashed anything recently, It just died on me last nigth and now I'm experiencing what you are as well. I was able to turn on the phone somehow last night but it stayed on for couple of mins and turned off again. At the time I had 60% charge.
Thanks
Unfortunately not. Sent my phone back to AT&T and they honored the warranty (despite it being very clear that I was rooted and on custom software).

Thanks. I got the phone when it launched so it's been over a year hence I'm well over the one year manufacturer warranty. Doubt they'll honor it for me =/.
Bad news, It's not about software, it's a hardware issue.
I had that issue with a Sprint S3,
The power button switch is stuck pressed all the time, you can try to hit it a little and maybe it pops out but the issue is gonna still there.
If you remove and insert the battery does it vibrates and tries to turn on without pressing the power button?

yup I just realized it was the power button issue. I managed to fix the problem[kind of], i kept trying to get into download mode while connected to AC Adapter with official charging cables. And it stayed in download mode long enough for me to go back to stock ROM. I'm just trying to avoid hitting the power button as much as possible because every time I do something goes crazy and phone turns off.
I'm gonna try and go to AT&T store tomorrow to see if they can do anything about this.
Thanks again for your help. I really appreciate it.
You're welcome. Good luck dude

i would flash again in odin but make sure auto reboot is NOT checked. you may have tried that already. have the back of the phone off. after a successful flash, pull the battery immediately. after you insert the battery back in, vol up/home/power combo for recovery. release that power button as soon as you get a vibrate. just trying to start from the beginning again with you, bro
let me know
trying that now. did take it to at&t real quick got it to boot as soon as i got to the start screen to setup google and what not immediate shut off.

Bricked?

Bell Galaxy S3 running stock JB rooted
I went to flash to Cyanogenmod 10.1 Nightly, it failed (Error status 7) so I attempted to reboot. Screen went black and stayed black, I left it for a few minutes, nothing happened then tried a battery pull. Now nothing. When I plug into my computer it makes the connect/disconnect chime but nothing else. If I hold down the power for ~10sec my laptop makes the disconnect chime, then when I release the power button it reconnects to my laptop (not sure if that helps any)
Just to further clarify, I cannot get to the download or recovery mod, screen is blank, no led when plugged in either.
Is it hard bricked?
I am looking at mobiletechvideos.com at their JTAG repair service. Is that my only/best option?
http://mobiletechvideos.mybigcommerce.com/samsung-galaxy-s-iii-jtag-brick-repair/
If all you did was try to flash cm10.1 then you are not bricked. You might not be doing the 3 button combo correctly to get back into recovery. Do this...
Pull Battery so power down device and then put it back in.
Hold volume Down, Home, then Power Button.
Release all of them when the 1st screen pops up. It's all about timing here.
That should take you back into recovery so you can just restore the nandroid backup you should've made prior to flashing anything.
No good, the screen is pure black no matter if I just try to power on, vol up + power + home, or vol down + power + home. Black screen.
Pull your battery, leave it out, and then plug it in.. no buttons or anything, it should turn on and see if it gets to the battery charging screen (which should show a lightning bolt only).
If it gets that far, power button and home button until you feel it vibrate, let go and it should boot.. post if it doesn't..
Don't press volume buttons, just home/power combo until it vibes..
Ok, so I did like you said, pulled battery and plugged the phone in to charge. I now get a solid red LED (this did not happen with the battery in), no lightning bolt though. The red LED turns off after about 2 minutes.

Well, at least the power connector inside isn't busted.. that's a good thing..
with it plugged in, does it turn on like normal? Just regular "boot my phone" mode, no recovery or download?
Try while the LED is on, and if nothing, try it after it goes out.. as I'm not entirely sure what that could mean..

If all that was done was updating CWM on an already rooted phone, then only your recovery is borked, which is still repairable.. but if you were flashing something else, say CF-AutoRoot or a ROM, then I need to know..
Since you said Error=7, then I can assume you already had a working copy of CWM on it.. correct?
Ya I already had CWM on it. I was trying to flash Cyanogenmod 10.1 nightly (todays release) on to the phone. I had Cyanogen10 on it a while back then switched back to stock firmware. I was curious as to the new JB4.2 so I wanted to try out Cyanogenmod 10.1

the OP said in 1st post that he was flashing a rom. never mentioned cwm. the only way to have flashed a rom in the first place and gotten a status 7 would have been in a custom recovery.

I am not familiar with the partitions on that device, so I can't say for sure. But all it takes is one file installed in the wrong place and you'd be in trouble. And if that file gets installed in the recovery partition....

Nope, nothing.
I want to thank everyone for the help and input so far!
There is no one in town here than can unbrick a hard bricked phone, but Toronto is only a 50min drive and there are a few places that will do it (~$70), or I can order one of those jigs online that plug into the microUSB port for about $60. It's looking like I will be going one of those routes.

Are you only letting go of the power button? It sounds like you are letting go of all the buttons at the same time.
Try -
Pulling battery, leave it out for a second or two
Put the battery in...If it powers on automagically, sticky power button as suggested.
If it's still off, hold both Vol keys and hit the power button..You'll see the Samsung logo and then a progressive slider...Should boot into recovery (Factory or custom)
Can't go into recovery? Press the vol up and power and make sure USB is connected and running ODIN or ADB and you should see Windows trying to install some drivers...

If you have a T989 and you pressed both volume keys and plugged the USB into your computer and couldn't get into download mode I am not sure what to tell you.
Buy a usb jig/dongle. With the phone off insert the dongle in the usb port of the phone and turn the phone on. It should put it into download mode. The fact you can see the Samsung logo indicates it isn't hard bricked and you should be able to get the phone into download mode. I also had issues getting into download mode when using the button combo so I got the usb dongle and it puts it into download mode every single time. They costs only a few bucks so it's worth giving it a shot.

Tried 5 different cables INCLUDING a brand new one AND the original. It started with a charing port repair done by a "profressionals. Then the phone could charge, but could be recognized on a PC OR through download mode by odin. Which led to a hard reset, which led to it hanging on the samsung logo, which led to another hard reset, which led to a bootloop and no recognition through any program. Now i have a paper weight that can charge....

"E: signature verification failed" error is all i keep getting when trying the sd card method. i believe the rom is stock, ANDROID SYS RECOVERY <3e> blue screen comes on when holding vol+/-. is my phone a brick or can it be fixed is my question. i dont want to keep wasting my time if this cant be fixed.

You will not be able to flash anything in stock recovery. To get into download mode, unplug the battery, plug into computer with Odin opened, hold power and two volume buttons, insert battery. You can then flash stock ROM in Odin.

Did you try what I just posted? If you can get into recovery, you have to be able to boot into download mode somehow.

yes sir. tried vol+/vol- + power and plugging usb into phone. also tried leaving cord in pc and phone with battery out, then putting it back in while holding vol buttons. i release power button after the little vibrate when first turning phone on. nothing still. i ordered a jig off ebay hoping it will get into download mode.

The jig should work. I found that it works better to hold it in passed the vibration until you see the download mode screen. And it is plug USB into computer and phone without pushing any buttons and then hold the 3 button combo in. If you want and easy way to root and install custom recovery once you are all fixed up, just let me know and I'll send ya some instructions.
Have a good evening,

How to use jig
- Turn off your phone and pull out the battery for 2 seconds.
- Put the battery back in the device and don't turn it on.
- Plug the jig into the micro USB port on the phone.
- After about few seconds, your phone should boot up automatically and bring you straight into download mode.
- Unplug the jig.
- Connect your phone with USB cable to computer and then flash your phone via the program "odin".

FWIW, you only have to push both volume buttons when plugging into the computer to get to download mode.

I was trying to trouble shoot since he said he had tried combos like that already. Idk why the jig didn't work when the phone boots, though. Would adb reboot download work without root?
