I was following the direction (to the tee) on the easy root thread and have hit a snag.
I'm on a Sprint GSIII LTE v4.1.2 phone.
Everything woks fine until step 13. The part where it says chose zip from sd card. The console spits out "E:Can't mount /sdcard/
What do I do now?
CWM-based Recovery is v5.5.0.4
I suggest you go HERE and do a bit of reading . Did you make sure to place the Zip on your Internal SD Card ?

Yes, and I get this message before I can even select a file
E:Can't mount /sdcard/
I've done the reading, have not found anyone else with this issue.
Try putting the Zip on your External SD, and see if it will Flash.

Ok so I got it rooted. The confusion (atleast for a noob) is here; there are two Easy guides. This guide does not work and this guide works.
If you're coming in from a google search you will be lead to the guide that does not work
Glad you got it sorted out, and are now Rooted . You may want to check out THIS THREAD .

Ok, now that I'm rooted I'm confused with all this information spread all over the place. Do I need to do anything essential from here on out? I did a backup to SD cad from VOL UP/HOME/POWER.
Do I need to backup or change anything else? I'm just like sitting here rooted.
Is there something I need to backup or save for future use? Do I need to protect myself somehow from carriers detecting I'm rooted? I'm looking at all sorts of FAQ's and honestly its overwhelming and confusing. Can someone just tell me in plain English what I need to do next? Not even thinking about custom ROMs yet.
EDIT: Just did a NANDROID BACKUP

Not really on the carrier question. For the most part they don't really care. If you don't already use it I'd suggest Titanium Backup. There are several other backup apps but TB is the best
EDIT: Good idea on the nandroid backup

You made a Nandroid Backup of your Stock Rooted Rom. Now as an extra precaution you can copy that backup to your PC \ Laptop. As for Rooted Roms, there are many to choose from. If you want to stay close to Stock, but good extras. You can try TPR ( The People's Rom ) . If you want Stock looking, but insane built in customization. You can look at M.O.A.R ( Mother Of All Roms ) . If you want completely Customized, Themed, and a Ton of built in Extras. Then JellyBomb is a Rom you need to check out. All of the ones I mentioned are Rock solid daily drivers. But they are by no means the only ones around. Also as stated above. If you have a lot of Apps, Titanium Backup is never a bad purchase. Just be careful what you restore.

Thanks for the info. What is the difference between a TWRP and Clockworkmod backup? I have the option for both
Not sure alt twrp. From cwm na.driod backup perspective, copu the backup.woth date to your pc. Cwm backuo is lifesaver you will come to knoevwhen you soft brick and restore. Also you can flash through odin vol down instead of up its called download mode. Check xda for suitable firmware rom for your phone. Hope this helps. Thanks button makes you first one for me

Forgive spelling mistakes that was my first past through xda dev app.
Basically cwm backup is otherwise called nandroid backup. Odin flashes firmware and wipes data in the process in my experience.

Now I would just continue to read and learn from all the good threads and people around here. From this point forward its really just what you want to do. Take it slow...and remember never ever flash international roms or roms not meant for your device.

They are both CWM, and TWRP great Recoveries. IMO it's a matter of what you like, and what your Device likes. From my experience it is slightly dependent on your Device. Some Devices work better on one Recovery vs the other. Thankfully it's fairly easy to switch between the two. Especially using The Recovery Switcher.

Hello. I'm running clockwork mod touch v 5.8.4.7 and when I backup any rom it names the backup 1970.**.** I know that cwm v6 is out, however I prefer cwm v5 (I feel as though on my gnex the nandroids took loads longer to backup and restore. And also prefer the old backup method as opposes to the new one.) So here are my questions. 1)has anyone else encountered this bug. And 2)is there a different cwm version that's either newer but not v6 that doesn't have this bug?
I'm pretty sure this is a known bug which doesn't have a solution for the time being. What you can do is backup through Rom Manager; this way you can name the file whatever you want.

Or try TWRP. It's WAY better in my opinion, but to each his own of course. Just a suggestion.

Your question has been answered, but I would like to add two things:
ROM Manager can name backup folders for you, however, the datestamp on that folder and the included files will still say 1970. You can always rename the folder manually, also.
I was depressed about CWM's new backup methods with v6 as well. At least until I learned that it still has support for the old "full backup" method. I really detest incremental backups for many reasons. In my opinion, tar should be the default option.
To re-enable full backup mode with CWM v6, navigate to:
backup and restore > choose backup format > tar.
This setting saves, by the way. It stores in /sdcard/clockworkmod/.default_backup_format. This file contains the text "tar".
There is zero reason not to use v6 over v5. You can store backups on your extSD now. The only thing I don't like about it is total lack of UI organization. It is a total mess, but I love it anyhow.

No, it's just that the only people that have lost their IMEI have mostly been using CWM.
Since Chrome can't download ZIP files correctly, I have to use the Stock Browser. But when I download a ZIP, it says download unsuccessful. Then I go and tap on the file to see the issue and it says "Download failed: not enough memory."
I have like, 10+ GB avaliable on both my SD Card and Internal storage, so I don't understand the issue. The ZIP file is 22MB.
I am on FreeGS3 as well.

See if you can get sdmaid installed and run the orphan cleaner i think it is called.

Pictures, personal files, backups, your rom zip etc...
Check your back ups you should never have more than one or two back up nandroid those take huge amount of space.
Just keep in mind anything on storage is either important to you personally but not to the phone, there won't be any system files necessary to the operation of the device.

I have a rooted AT&T Galaxy Note II.
Found this article on how to flash the phone so that apps can be put on the external SD card rather than the internal.
It looks easy. Could probably do it in under 5 minutes. The benefits, it seems, would be enormous.
Here is my major concern....
When AT&T pushes the next major update (I already have Jellybean 4.1.2), it will erase the root.
When that happens, will my phone go bezerk because the apps are not where they are supposed to be by default?
Is it always possible to immediately re-root a phone no matter what update is being pushed?
Also...
If an an app has a Google Play Store update to be downloaded, will it update the app if it is sitting on the external card?
[/QUOTE] When AT&T pushes the next major update (I already have Jellybean 4.1.2), it will erase the root.
Well if you're rooted and running a custom rom its likely the developer will take the updated source and update his custom rom, so no real reason to let your phone update from your carrier. And you can turnaround and root it again anyway.
When that happens, will my phone go bezerk because the apps are not where they are supposed to be by default?
From the article it isn't 100% clear but there was a hint that said the path was being modded so I don't anticipate your phone going berserk... And to test my hypothesis I'm gonna flash this in a minute and report back.
Is it always possible to immediately re-root a phone no matter what update is being pushed?
Yes.
Also...

Again the article only hints to this but the only real way to know is to try it out, which I'm gonna do right now.

Wow. How cool to have you here almost "live" testing this modification.
I am not running a custom rom. Just plain 'ol rooted on Jellybean 4.1.2.
I am also wondering if I need to copy all my files over the external SD card or this modification does it for you.
Look forward to your findings and will follow your advice before trying this. May have more questions as well. Will stay tuned.
Again, the link for everyone else watching this thread.

Ok I ended up downloading the fat32 for custom kernel and it work, all 234 apps are installed on my external sd freeing up over 3 gb of storage on my internal sd.
Unable to post pics right now cause the server is overloaded, but I'll edit this post when it let's me. All in all I'd say my original advice is null as I downloaded the wrong file. Good find mate.

Oh...okay...so this actually WORKS.
Now the questions...
1. Did it automatically take all your apps from your internal drive (that existed there already) and moved them to the external?
2. Does it look like any future downloads I do from the Google Play Store will automatically install the app on the external card or do I have to manually move it?
You have already assured me that if a new update is pushed to my Note II that I can immediately re-root it so my phone doesn't get screwed up with the new app locations.
Thanks for all your assistance

Make sure you do a backup first and download the correct file. For you, based off what you told me, would be the fat32 for stock kernel.

Are chances pretty good I'll be okay without doing the backup? I won't hold you responsible if something goes wrong.
What do you use to backup? I use MyBackup Pro, but lately it freezes in the middle of backing up. I do have Titanium Root but I never backed up with it before so I will have to try and figure out how to do it.
But again, if things went pretty smoothly for you and I can escape a backup then for me, all the better.
And yes, I was ready to do the Fat32 kernel. That is the format I erased my card in.

LittleRedDot,
Having some difficulty flashing.
I downloaded both Fat32 files and got the same result. An E:signature verification failure during flash.
I think the correct file I needed for my stock Jellybean was Mod file for fat32 SD card (stock kernel with init.d support)
Downloaded it to my download directory on external card.
Rebooted into recovery mode (Power, Volume Up, Home Key)
Scrolled down to Install from Download
Found the downloaded file and selected it.
That is where I get the E:signature verification failure.
Any idea what may be going wrong here?
(BTW, backed up the phone to the external drive using Titanium Root. Hope it was okay to backup everything to the same drive I was flashing the drive from)

If I were you, before I flash anything I would download goo manager from the play store, use it to install the latest TWRP recovery, the go into recovery and do a backup, then flash this sd card mod.

Go into settings and find the option to download from unknown sources, I think it's in the developer options, and click it, then erase the previous downloads and re-download the file.

That option has been checked long ago.
I am going to try and do it through the script manager.

Script manager won't work because I didn't successfully Mod the phone.
Not sure why it is not working but every time I go into recovery mode and select APPLY UPDATE FROM EXTERNAL STORAGE
and then locate the .zip file in my download directory, I get the signature failure and the update aborts.
This should work on any ROM, any recovery. AOSP, TouchWiz, Sense, MotoBlur, Xperia, whatever.
The very first thing you should do is check the md5sum to make sure it matches itself to ensure that your backup is good to begin with. Because if you use this method without doing that you could restore a bad backup and that may do more harm than good, use at your own risk. Or you can just restore the backup to make sure it's working correctly.
Then open a file browser, navigate to your backup (it should be in the clockworkmod/backups folder on one of your SDs). Open that up, then find "nandroid.md5". Open that file, it should tell you it can't open it and give you an option to "Open As", pick that. Then choose to Open it as a text file. Choose the appropriate text editor (you should have at least one installed, the screenshots are from ROM Toolbox, download it... It has all the tools you need). Delete all the text inside, then save. You are now done, no more md5 mismatch.

What is the reason for MD5 mismatch? It's not like there are multiple ways of computing MD5 with different outputs

On this device it's usually because the nandroid was made on a different recovery than the one it's being restored on. I just do this for every nandroid and don't worry about it anymore.
Thanks bilgerryan. I'm sure it will help many.
One thing I would do first (being a backup nut) is:
Once you've created a nandroid boot into the system and check it via an MD5 checker - I use the AFV app. That way you know it matches 'itself' and is valid as can be for that recovery.
Then go ahead and clear out the info if you plan on using other recoveries - like switching between AOSP and TW etc.
I know we don't have to worry as much in the past but even 'good' recoveries didn't always perform as they should and create incomplete images.
I really hope some people read your post before asking/complaining about mismatches but that might be too much to hope for and we'll just have to see it in the 'facepalm' threard.
Thanks again Ryan for all your work and support!

Yes, you should be able to do that. Or one from a friend's phone. Let me know cuz I haven't tested but I'm 99% sure it will as long as it is the same phone (ie E4GT).

Install Beta 2 or use Oppo's own backup app for now until they fix it.

Yep, aware of the beta.
Their own app was not restoring data for me, did you ever try it?
On Gummy now and way happier, may actually keep the device now. Can't believe how much nicer the touch response is, will be watching battery today but may actually keep the device now!
No haven't tried to restore data yet with own app but I hope it works if I need it.

There is a new ota update for the find7a, and it looks like it fixes the TB issues. Try it out.

Also be aware that if you install the release software version of 1.2 (001) Ti was working. You can then create a folder on your sd with Ti before updating, update to 002 and it will work. Both there and after updating to 003 but you have to create the folder on 001. I haven't tested 004 yet.

It's OK for me after installing the new release of ColorOS 1.20i (004)
Thks for the news
Glad you solved it. It seems to be fixed for most people, except maybe those who tempered with the stock rom a bit too much.

Hi everyone
I have a problem. I am on the X9006_002_140419 version which the phone came with and I am not able to perform a complete TB backup with it (known issue). Now I tried to upgrade to the nevest OTA version by using the stock recovery. Only problem is that the OTA wipes all data.
My question is if there is a way to upgrade to the newest OTA without loosing all the app data. Is there an OTA version (003 or 004) which does not wipe all data?
My phone is rooted and I am using TWRP 2.7.0.0 custom recovery.
Thanks everyone for any help.
Best,
Ascenca

I don't know about others, but I've updated through 3 OTAs for v1.2 and I haven't lose my apps and settings yet.

Me neither.
But I think that oppo's OTA doesn't work with TWRP recovery installed.
So, people who use that kind of setup must use a modified version of the OTA file to update the phone through TWRP, and maybe that wipes their apps and settings.
Well what I did was reverting back the recovery to stock recovery and then applying the original otas. Although I did it that way it wiped all my apps and data.
What I did now was a full wipe and installed the full 003 package, then the 004 ota and reinstalled and setup all apps.
Result: TB is still not working although I am on 004 which should work with TB. Any further help?

Hi, The only way I could get it to work was, Full wipe and then install full 001
package but did not allow the phone to sync any data, then I let the phone perform the ota update of 004. I then installed TB and tested if it works, which it dose, then I let the phone sync and install my apps and tested again.

Titanium Backup folder copy it to / data folder and set all permission (rwx rwx rwx)
Open Titanium Backup setting /General/Preferences and find the folder / data / TitaniumBackup /
