Exploit for the stock rom?
Have had mine since Wednesday I believe, have not done anything to it, although I have no prior experience rooting/modding phones.
I find myself wanting to be able to change little things and I'm not sure if rooting would let me be able to do these things? Stuff like turning off camera shutter sound (I think I've seen articles about this and rooting is required). Also changing vibration pattern? Like having vibrate pattern specific for new email, vibrate pattern specific for new text, etc?
I too am waiting. I haven't been disappointed or eager to change much of anything that would require root access. I am content as of now.

Haven't had the need to root this bad boy yet. I get 10-15 hours out of it with moderate to heavy use the signal for me is better than my evo and you can uninstall the bloat without root.

Yeah dood, dem Brocken computerz I heard is the WORST (hehe). But in all srsness, im just waiting a LITTLE longer until the features in roms flesh out a little bit, seeing as how theyre still new and all. Im very tempted to get that 1.6Ghz kernel and all, but this phone is so darn close to perfect as it is. I almost dont want to de-virginize the thing XDD
Nothing yet, waiting for some siik roms.
However, I can't wait ...biggest deal maker for me is the ability to control volume of everything individually ...I.e. Alarm high, notifications low, ringer mid...and waiting for AOSP roms
What are people waiting for?
The root is available.
Running a completely stock rom + stock recovery + stock kernel +su binary/apk.
Works great.
I been addicted to flashing since the evo days n had this phone since day one. Love this phone n i dont really see the point of rooting this bad boy because its a sick device on stock.
Just waiting fOr this lost of signal drama and all this bugs are reporting from flashing this custom kernel n for more roms to come out. N maybe after ill root this bad boy.

So I have on order from tmobile 2 of these phones for my parents, they wanted to upgrade and learn how to use them. But coming from well... I nokia bar phone, and a old samsung slide phone, this change might be a little big. So I was wondering if you guys could recommend some good stable roms that are easy to use, have somewhat decent battery life. Or even if should I just stick with the stock one? Thank you guys. -CptSamir
I just released a ROM earlier today.

Personally I would let them knock around the stock rom for a little while until they get used to android and then try a custom ROM later.

Since they're for your parents, I would leave them as is, stock. Chances are, they're never going to understand or utilize the phone's full potential. Unless you plan on always being available to immediately troubleshoot any and all errors/issues that might/will pop up with a custom ROM, stock is the way to go. Even stock blows away other phones available.

If this is there 1st foray into Android, leave it stock. The worst thing you can do is have a custom ROM on it, then have it do some weird stuff, and they are up a creek when they go to the store to have them fix it.
If they want to mod the phone and mess with it, let them make the choice and let them learn to do it.
You could at least root and debloat the phones.
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA Premium App
I wouldn't do anything to them, this phone is good stock. The last thing you need is them accidentally going to recovery and messing with something they shouldn't.
That's the best thing to do IMO.

Pretty much it depends on your parents understanding of Technology my mother I got her into android I gave her my old Vibrant custom rom and all and from time to time i would update it to something newer and she would get how to use it pretty quick sure she has had some issues but if your knowledgeable enough you can help em in those snags as for ROMs i would suggest Bombaridier personally my favorite
I would just stick with the stock one personally. And this is coming from someone who in the past ALWAYS flashed a custom rom on other phones.
I'd flash a custom kernel, like darkside, because it make the phone much smoother

I vote for stock as well. I am still on stock (rooted and bloat-frozen) and it works well for me. If we had MIUI, then I would recommend that because your parents could easily cusome the look of their phones to their hearts' content without alot of knowledge and without great risk.

I used my upgrade from my Nexus S 4g and decided to come over the the S2 on Sprint. I intend to play with this phone till my wife upgrade is in August which she will take the S2 in hopes that I will get the S3 by then.
Been reading up on these posts on here and I think I got it but wanted to make sure.
1. I need to Odin to get root with el29?
2. Never flash, wipe, reset data in ICS CWM?
3. Is it me or are there no Kernels like AirKernel for this phone?
4. I plan to go with CNA as I had on my Nexus. Love that rom anything you would like to share about this rom?
Any advice on the questions would be great and to be honest I really only post here and there but I'm always on here. Been here since the release of the Evo 4G.
Thanks.

Sort of asking for help, those are things that I've read up on. Just kind of a ice breaker more then anything.
Welcome to the party and congrats on the new phone.
The only question I can answer is #1, which is yes, to get an easy start just Odin sfhub's one-click EL29 for root, then read, read, read in the development section for all the goodies available.
Happy flashing and remember, if you brick your phone it's all on you.
1. I rooted just fine without Odin.
2. Yes it's also recommended you do that with most roms overall to avoid technical difficulties later on.
3. Idk what airkernel is, but there seems to be a limited choice if kernels for ginger.
4. CNA? Don't think I've seen a ROM called that around here but what do I know? I'm just a newbie...

You just have to have thicker skin over here, people may seem a little harsh at times (me included) but at the core of their comments you typically find the truth you needed. If you read around enough you'll see there are a lot of good people in this community. I'd suggest you start with the thread below to see what I mean.

Most important of all, just follow the #1 rule of thumb for the internet, don't take things personally and you'll be just fine.
Oh, also, don't expect anyone here to a)kiss your butt (well maybe iSaint j/k lol), b)hold your hand or c)pat you on your wee little noggin when you f*ck up because you didn't read and ended up bricking your phone. That is all.
Everybody moved to the Evo One. This place is a ghost town now.

Coming from a Evo then a Nexus S 4G I can't believe the trouble ones has to go through flashing roms that are ICS.
Odin is easy so that is nice but still. Seems like a lot of effort.
This phone is sweet. I just got to wait till I actually have time from work, kids and family so I can sit down and root this think and flash away.
Excited.
I can honestly say if it weren't for Odin and sfhub's one-click goodies I would probably still just be an observer on this forum. But he made it easy and then I learned to flash recovery and in doing so was able to start flashing Calkulin's custom ROMs. Although that's as far as I've gotten for now it's a long way from where I began and I'm excited for what's around the corner.

Once the source is released and official ota's are out im sure all the kinks will be ironed out. Development for ICS is still early for this phone. Using Odin isnt that bad, you can still flash a rom in about five minutes.

It may seem a bit overwhelming at first but it really is incredibly easy. Just make sure your CWM is stock (just flash CM7 or GB Miui), and then you should have no issues flashing ICS.

There are a few apps I had that required root. I'm eager to get some JellyBean on it though. I did flash the google now and google ears. Those are pretty cool.

Same here. My last phone (LG P500), which has now gone to my wife, is rooted and I like to stay tuned to developments for it as well. I expect that I'll root once I get 4.1 for my T989D (assuming it comes), then see what custom ROMs can offer beyond that. I've been reading these forums for over a month now to learn the procedures and of potential pitfalls so I don't wreck my phone when the time comes.
This phone is quite a step up from the P500, so I'm pretty happy without root for the time being.

I'm guessing by this statement, that you are a young teenager. I am an Android user and have been for quite a while. I honestly prefer to live my life and not have to tweak a phone's core OS for it to work right. It should work correctly right out of the box. Having to reset my phone several times a day or deal with bloatware is not fun. The nature of Android OS to begin with requires de-bloat/hacking.
Anyway like I said this is coming from a SGS2 user and former iPhone user as well. Only reason I don't go back is iPhones are still physically small for my liking. That and I'm on contract with T-Mobile and live in a building with poor reception (need WiFi calling)
Bought the phone ... rooted it in less than an hour xD. But, after browsing through some roms, I am in stock now just because everything works. However, I do run some rooted apps that come in handy at times.
Battery
I wanted something close to stock, so I went infamous 3.0 and it's just as stable, but the battery life is so much better than stock ICS. Would never go back.
I think its insane to deal with bloatware. Its androids biggest flaw. And theaon reason I root.

I didn't even know what the stock Rom looked like I turned in my phone had some juice on the battery and I flashed away
Had to try the new update just to see what it looks like, although I ran frosty for a while but was flashing something everyday even with official I have been flashing stuff just to get my flash on(mostly apps and addons) to get my fix until 4.2 roms start coming out, for now I have also flashed the 4.2 camera back on and little mods here and there mostly cosmetic and audio upgrades but at first sign of 4.2 or some rom that gives me new stuff to pay with I'm flashing official rom away
