Which format do you use for 64 gb SD - Galaxy Note II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi.! Just wanted to know I bought sandisk 64gb ultra class 10 . Exfat seem slow n take more boot time n low speed too ..then I formatted it using Ubuntu last night n restored my data kaboom ...its snappy like my other Sandisk 32gb ultra class 10 ...and 2nd it works with any custom recovery like Philz or TWRP without a glitch....though TWRP claims it support exfat SD but ...some how It seem not sure.
2nd currect me if im wrong about ...does philz recovery support exfat .?..for NOTE 2 ? And philz does not though if currect...it do for other phones ..though
Tip
Always use fat32 with 64 gb class 10 and use anything else windows tools to format sd (seems windows got some flaws with mico sd) eg use only mac or lunix (Ubuntu) you never bump in any problems ...like others on blog .

exFAT. You'll need to flash a recovery that states it's compatible with exFAT. I was using a CWM Recovery that worked just fine with exFAT and was on Cyanogenmod 10.1

Thats what I said ....read up ...TWRP say it support but ....it really can not detect exfat Sd at all...and other CWM is not safe sds bug ...many people landed up with sds or dead 64gb sd cards ....
And I do not thin CM 10 support exfat on note 2 either I was on it too but now on Waman v 3.7 with adam kernel...

Fat32 is limited to 4GB per file so I use exFAT. It works like a charm even with recovery (philz).

You cannot copy file larger then 4 GB to Fat32 file system. Doesn't matter what tool you are using. This is Fat32 limitation.
In case of philz and exFAT I'm sure that this combination works fine. I have used philz and exFAT on s3 and now I'm using it on n2.

Ntfs, way better than exfat.

I wish...ntfs support was there but on mac users its problem they can read only not write ...and windows ignore any fat 32 partion which is greater then limit ...so sandisk choosen exfat for flash media storage.
And on Android its sucks with exfat with low speed +boot time mount with 64gb class 10...not good enough....nor Ntfs support. ..only on custom kernels n recoverys ...
So best option is to format it with fat32 with non windows os...... for better mount time n speeds ..

For me Fat32 is unusable because of its limitations.
I don't have any issues with exfat. Boot time is the same for card formatted with exfat (64gb SanDisk) and for fat32 (32gb adata), just tried it. For every day use like watching and recording movies, installing roms, copying files it's speed is just fine but I admit that I have never compared speeds between different file systems.
If you have root you can try paragon ntfs mounter. It can mount ntfs in rw but it won't be supported by recovery.

[Q] Custom Roms and 64gb cards

Safe to assume that all custom Roms will not read a 64gb card if formatted in ex fat?
And Roms based on stock should be ok?
I believe that statement is true. If you replace rom with kernel..
To be safe.. Exfat for stock, fat32 for everything else.
Not saying Exfat won't work with custom kernel.. But the few I have tried didn't..
Also.. Maybe cwm also has problems with Exfat.. Not sure..
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using xda premium
Ok thanks.
Yeah cwm doesn't see the card at all. The issue I have with fat 32 is the file size limit. I would prefer not having to re convert videos so that I can put them on my phone. Then again I could probably learn to live with it

I took the plunge. I've been reading a lot of posts that claim it doesn't work on the Note 2, but an equal amount that say it does. I know you can either format it in fat32 or exfat. Exfat allows you to store files larger than 4GB, such as HD movies. Is there any other advantage to using exfat than the 4GB file size option? Also, I'm pretty sure exfat won't work with TWRP recovery, right? I'd be stuck with stock recovery if I opted for exfat formatting, right?
TWRP is a recovery not a kernel. If you're running stock kernel exfat should work.

It will not find the your SD card if you try to do a backup and restore if you formatted the card using exfat. I wonder what would happen if I went ahead and installed TWRP, but when I did my back up I inserted a smaller, back-up card that formatted with fat32. I could reinsert the fat32 card only if I needed to restore the backup...

I have no idea. All I know is on my ATT Inspire the nandroid backups were always stored on my SD card using CWM.
For CWM, if you want to back up to extSdCard, you have to select "backup to external card" or something like that.
for TWRP, the latest version supports exFAT & when you are in backup, you can select if you want to backup to internal or external sdcard. its a radio button.

You don't need to use ROM manager because CWM & TWRP does everything it does and if you want to update CWM then you'll have to use ODIN.

Just download GooManager from the Play store and select to install Open Recovery (like previous poster said). The first few releases of TWRP did not support exFat, but the dev was nice enough to add it.
I just booted into TWRP and confirmed it's there.

Thanks to everyone for clearing this up! The developer of TWRP should consider noting that TWRP now offers exfat support on the TWRP OP. That's a pretty big deal IMO.
My phone arrives Monday, but my 64gb card probably won't be here for a while. In the meantime I will be using a 32GB fat32 card. Any harm in just powering down the phone and switching cards when the new, larger exfat card arrives? Switching cards never seemed to be an issue on my old Inspire. I mainly just use the card to house music and movies.

Not true. You should have no problem running a 64gb card on an AOSP rom as long as it is formatted to fat32. I am currently running a 64gb sandisk card and my current rom is liquidsmooth but have also used it on carbon, rootbox, paranoid as well as a few touchwiz based roms with no issues. Just make sure you format the card to fat32 and you should be fine.

No support for exfat, so you'll have to format to fat 32, which defeats the purpose of a high capacity card.
(can't store files bigger then 4gb aka HD rips)
Although there are some hacks on this board that may work.

Xfat from my understanding only works on stock kernel and persus from what I remember reading unless the dev added the support so like it was mentioned formatting it to fat32 on that size card defeats that cards purpose....I should have been clearer since the OP said it doesn't work on cm10 but did on his gfs phone that seemed like why to me.

So, can we expect ex fat support on cm10.1 anytime soon?
sd card issues with aosp/cm roms....................that's why I stay away from those roms in that thread...........those roms look bad-ass, but not worth sd card issues, i.e. reformatting to fat32 and such..........not worth it.
I wouldn't get anything over 32gigs...unless you plan on downloading a bunch of pics, games, videos and apps..my 16gig is perfect for me.
The above poster is correct if you want to run aosp or cm gotta format to fat32..
And yes some kernels other then stick and Perseus have issues reading exfat.
But there isn't a Damn thing wing with running perseus they are dope.

SD card not mounting/cant flash ROM

I have CWM 6.0.3.1 installed and im rooted. When I go into recovery the SD card does not mount. So I can't flash a new ROM. I tried to format the SD card in the phone but that did'nt help either. Why not Odin flash the stock-rooted rom and then you can flash cwm/twrp custom roms or just stay stock rooted.
Either way it will fix your mounting issue for sure.
Big mistake if you're going to flash cm10, you are just asking for problems unless you like experimentation.

That's only one of many reasons why I always try to advise people to stay away from AOKP/AOSP/CM roms.
All of them have inferior cameras and none have wifi calling.
Those roms were meant for developers or for those who like to do a lot of experimentation.
I just got a 64gb sdcard yesterday and it works perfectly, I had a 16gb card which worked perfectly too.
The rom I am using now is jovy's Stockorama v1 which is not exactly stock, it is deoxidized and debloated
and has many mods and lot's of improvements when compared to stock rom.

All sdcards come pre-formatted with FAT32 as default because they perform better and
faster than other formats when used in cell phones and other small devices.
The only advantage of formatting sdcards with other than the default format is when you are
dealing with files larger than 4GB in size. Most people will never have to deal with files of that
size unless they want to use their phones to record video for more than 8 hours continuously.
There are many 3rd party windows 7 utilities which have other format options like MiniTool partition wizard it's a free
(for home use) partition manager that can format a partition as EXT2/3/4 from windows - http://www.partitionwizard.com

Will a 128GB microSDXC work with Xperia M if formatted to FAT32?

In my opinion, it should work.
But, our M will support ext4 ?????

So now I want to buy a 128GB SDXC if it works. I currently use a 32GB SDHC. If it doesn't work, I would rather not waste $120 only to find that out haha so if someone has a 128GB card, they could maybe test it. That'd be helpful.

So now I want to buy a 128GB SDXC if it works. I currently use a 32GB SDHC. If it doesn't work, I would rather not waste $120 only to find that out haha so if someone has a 128GB card, they could maybe test it. That'd be helpful.

Alright thanks. Gonna buy a 128GB soon enough then.
I had inquired this many times through this forum.
No one had replayed.
I am om my Strontium 64GB SDXC .
Memory swapped.
I had tested second partition in ext2, 3, 4... no luck
boot-lope was the result.
FAT was working fine.
But we couldn't transfer data, right.
Please help me on this.
I had to do anything more?
Actually I am a noob

What is your firmware version and XM model? C2005 or C1905?
Are you on stock firmware?
What did you use to swap your memory?
I think I can help out, I'll try as much as I can

Dear Bro,
I have been using with swapped memory by using XDA's shared method.
So there is no issue of rooting.
I think my card is culprit.
Maybe due to SDXC...
C2005
15.5.a.1.5 Stock LB
no swap script is different ..it wont cause reboots if ur using swap script .. try to full root ur firmware with rebootfix applied
