[Q] Set Default Storage

Looking for a way to set folders to install to EXTERNAL SD card (Not the actual apps). Not like apps2SD...just the folders the apps create for settings and such.
You can specify what location/folder to store pictures taken with the camara too, be it internal or external SD.
This is a setting in the camara app...but most apps dont provide an option like this.
Example:>
We have System, Internal, and if you install External micro SD.
You install Titanium Backup, or other apps that can back up stuff and their own settings, i.e. backup GO launcher settings. When you make your Titanium Backup(s) it creates a folder on INTERNAL storage. Now in the event that something (un-thinkable ) happens to your phone like dropping in water or ran over by MACK truck etc...(you get the point) you can't get it to power on you wont be able to get to any of your files on internal SD. Hopefully your External micro SD would survive and you could take it out, in one of the above examples.
So...that's why I ask if this can be done to bypass the INTERNAL SD in a way. I would actually use the internal for music and movies and put files that I want to make sure stay safe on the EXTERNAL SD. Most of us transfer mp3's and movies etc...from computer so we have copies.
Yeah one could just backup the INTERNAL SD from time to time. But we all know how sometimes this is overlooked.
Not sure if it's something about the way Samsung partitoned the storage or in EEPROM settings or something. On cyanogen mod roms though it had a setting that allowed for this. Phones with less internal storage like HD2 stored the apps on internal and their created folders to external card if one is installed, makes me lean towards the sofware.
P.S. if just move those folders to the External SD the apps dont look their for them.

CM7, has a build in option to do that
you could probably download CM7 source code and dissect that
Link2SD, can do exactly what you want, which is why i always use it to install my apps directly to my External SD card

I wish I could DEV but um more of a tester ! I downloaded some kitchens before but just couldn't get anything going so gave up. Guess I know my place. HAHA
Link2SD sounds like it may work I have to try it. It gives plenty of options!

Well on titanium backup you can change itnto backup to the sd instead, just click menu> preferences> backup folder location. At first its set to mnt/sdcard/titaniumbackup, you got to press back and select external sd card and titaniumbackup, or if your sd card already has a titanium folder, just select "detect" and it will find the folder on the ext sdcard

Wow thanks...I knew you could change the location, but that's new to me the DETECT feature that's cool.

Yeah my point...Getting them to the SD is no problem its the apps wont look their unless they have the option to change default location like above mentioned titanium settings.
Side note: seen the post from Cyanogenmod about CM7 being "in progress" the option is there to set default under applications so all shall be fine soon for this anyway.

Were you talking about my post? If so then all the apps do work properly, its just moving the backups you make on titanium to the sd card, not the app itself

i'm not talking about backups, i'm talking about Apps that are moved forcefully to run from SD, you can do that using TI
but some Apps behaves erratically after that, only SD compatible Apps are unaffected

[TIP] How to regain [possible a lot of] internal storage

I tried something tonight and I think discovered a great way to regain internal storage. I had about 1gb left internally and I couldn't figure our what was taking up so much data because it didnt seem like even my largest apps added up to what I was using. The steps reclaimed 7.5gb of space. Thats a lot of "unknown" data if you ask me.
WARNING: THIS WILL ERASE EVERYTHING ON YOUR INTERNAL STORAGE. Make sure photos, music, downloads, etc. are backed up elsewhere first. (I.e. I had to go into this knowing I would lose all of my Spotify music.)
1) Make a titanium backup of everything just in case something goes wrong with step 2.
2) Reboot into recovery and make a nandroid backup that you SAVE TO EXTERNAL SD Card.
3) Wipe data. I know on TWRP it will show a red triangle and remind you you don't really have to do this. Go forth boldly knowing you have a nandroid.
4) restore your nandroid.
5) reboot and see how much more internal data you have now (share here if it worked.
If anyone smarter than me at android (who are many) and can offer additional input on this, please feel obliged. I can honestly say this worked for me and my phone works just perfectly (and looks thinner doing it )

I think that wipe removes everything from your internal SD card.
And I could be wrong, but I don't think restoring a nandroid will restore EVERYTHING that was on your SD card. Like pictures, music, etc.
So I'd probably suggest backing up the entire SD card contents as well.
Or another option is to use SD Maid to wipe all your old, unused cache/etc. It's safer and won't remove anything you would have wanted to keep.

Dumb question: you need to save your nandroid to your EXTERNAL SD card for this to work right? Otherwise it will wipe your nandroid too?

I've used SD Maid (Pro) and it does give some "relief" to storage. However, I've still not achieved nearly the results I have with this method. Also, you have to select each cleaning method one at a time and it can take a while to process results. It's definitely a great option for folks afraid to take this plunge
Thank you for pointing out about the pics and storage. I'll add a warning to rhe OP. I keep all that stuff on my external card (as most probably do), so I didn't think about it. The Downloads folder is something people might want to back up as well.

So just so you know, what you have done here is delete all of your data. Titanium backup only backs up the actual APK and installer data. Any larger games like ones from gameloft and allot of others will now need to download their resources again so once you play those games the space will be taken up again.

That's a valid point, to an extent. I did not have any games like that installed when I did this and went from 1gb free to 8.5. I gave up playing games like that on my phone because 1) I have an iPad and 2) 16gb is not enough room for that stuff. There is an app (think it's called GL to SD) that will put the extra data those games download onto your external sd card. The biggest thing I lost is Spotify, but I don't mind resyncing that app if it means I just made a heck of a lot more room for more music.
I'm not a developer and I'm not an expert at Android by any means. I do know, however, that my phone runs perfectly fine after this experiment. I think all OS's do this memory cluttering to an extent. I know Windows does and I remember my iPhone doing it as well. I used to restore once in a while just for this reason. So, I don't pretend to know all the reasons, but I can speak from multiple experiences.

The paid version of Titanium is very powerful. There are settings you can adjust. An odd game I enjoy is paradise Island. I have moved it from an HD2 to a pos gb G2x and on to the GS3. You need a large sdsc card.

Just wanted to confirm that I had the same issue and used a similar process to regain my internal storage. In my case, I had deleted a large amount of files (~7gb's) and never gained the space back in available internal storage.. So I went into recovery (I'm using TWRP) and wiped internal storage, system, data, cache.. Then just installed a fresh rom (stored on my ext sd), bingo, everything seems to be perfect again.

+1 for titanium pro, this helps me keep my storage in check

Or, you download Disk Usage from the app store, run it and delete the largest folders which are typically TWRP or CWM backups....thus saving all of your other data.
And everyone that does this will gain back all of their storage, because they will be completely wiping their internal storage.

I think I figured out one of the problems
Facebook and google both "sync" their galleries with my phone. thus putting upto 9 gigs of pictures onto my internal storage, without anyway of removing them (so it seems???) I can't disable them in the gallery, and I can't find their physical existence in "my files"
Is there anyway to remove them if they've accidentally synced??
although currently it's too late as I just did a wipe to my phone, deselecting those options I figured I would pose the question and hopefully give someone some food for thought.
EDIT: I also assume this is the same with any other account based app that syncs large file directories. (maybe twitter?)

Internal memory folders changed after J.B Kies update?

Hi I have been dealing with this problem for awhile now and still haven't been able to find a fix (without rooting). After I updated JB from Kies when it came out my internal and memory card folders are completely different? Also it says I only have 11.95GB total in my internal memory. The internal memory folder says :sdcard0. And my memory card folder is: extSdCard? I'm not rooted. Does anyone know how to get the folders back to the regular names ext sd ect? Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

That is how it they are formatted now. It's not a mistake or anything being messed up. I guess I'm just used the internal being sdcard0 and ex sd card being extsdcard. I don't use myfiles much. I use root explorer and it can displays it as storage and then inside that folder is extsdcard and sdcard. Or there is a fodler just called sdcard for the internal in the root of the file system.
What problem is it creating, other than just being different than you are used to ?

Yhea, i'm having some trouble too. After the update my extCard is totally mess-up. The folders with the pictures and songs are not recognized, and the Gallery doesn't show hundreds of pictures, but i see if i use a file manager. I've synced all my songs so far, but with the pictures is a mess: seems also the format is not recognized anymore and with Kies i'm not seeing a way for put the pictures in the new folder named "Photo". It's really frustrating.

i'll try not to rant too hard but Kies and OTA firmware updates are a joke. you are essentially dirty flashing one rom over another with no real clearing of caches, no resetting, no way for all the programs to regroup, rebuild and run on the system hardware/software properly. the thing about dirty flashing is, it sticks well with some devices but generally not with many others. you'll see these types of issues many times among the avid flashers and those that must have the latest release of a developers rom.
i would recommend backing everything up, booting into stock recovery, wiping data/factory reset and wiping cache. if you decide to perform another update via kies in the future, i would do this procedure before AND after the update.
yes, you have to start over when you perform these sorts of actions but you have to ask yourself, are you happy with how your device is performing now (before the update)? is it worth starting over? (it might be if you're going to run on the updated OS for a year or so) and how well do you want it to perform after you install the update?

EDIT: i just assume everyone accesses recovery and download mode so i didnt post the button combo. recovery is: Volume Up + Home + Power. release just the power button when you get a vibrate.

This is normal for a 16GB SGS3. 16GB is advertised but actual formatted available space is less. 11.95GB is right on par. This is the case for just about all devices that have memory that is writable, including hard drives on a computer.

Any particular reason why you are using Apps2sd? $10 to $20 will land you an external memory card with huge amounts of space (32GB at least). This is plenty to store music, photos, and other misc. files. And even with a ton of apps installed to internal, you still should have ample space left over. There is just no good reason to use Apps2sd on this phone as it has so much internal memory. If this is just to keep you from losing data, then I would suggest rooting and using an app such as Titanium Backup as it makes it super easy to restore apps and the corresponding data after anything that requires a factory reset.

As stated by xBeerDroidx, factory reset from stock recovery. You will have to re-setup your device but it will be a one time frustration for now until the next update.

Actually i did.
After the update, without factory reset, everything was (almost) fine… except a strange malfunction of the Gps (lock signal lost after a while) and sporadic reboot without reason. For the Gps I’ve found here the solution (NV Rebuild), but for the reboot… I wasn’t sure about it. So I decided for a factory reset. After that my ext card, with the ICS paths, was not recognized. So bucked up everything, format the ext card and let Kies sync my files and create all the folders needed from JB: Camera Photo Video for pictures, and media for the music. Now I’m let’s say 90% ready to go… I’m curios to test especially the Gps.

Cyanogen 10.2 and big problem

Hello guys. To begin with, sorry for my English (I'm from Poland).
I've got a problem with my Samsung Galaxy Note II. I have had jelly bean 4.1.2 (I think) stock system and today I changed it to Cyanogenmod 10.2. Everything is good now but there is a problem with storage on phone's memory. I did a full backup and all wipes using CWM recovery. After I installed new system, I have all my old contacts, but I don't have my music. Furthermore system says that there is only 2,14 GB of free space, although all media, applications, pictures, videos and other blablabla takes only around 100 MB. What should I do?

You're the 2nd poster in 24 hours whom I am 99% certain did not wipe as much as your think you did.
Odds are you did NOT wipe /data/media. So ALL you media files are still there. Now Android4.2+ use a different partition for the internal SD card than TouchWiz 4.1, which matters as the TWiz ineternalSD partition is NOT accessible from inside AOSP. There's a flashable zip to move your media across partitions somewhere here on XDA. Otherwise flash back to TouchWiz, move all your stuff over to an external SD card, and then flash back.

Ok. I've got root and indeed there are all my old files in /data/media
But can I just remove them all from this folder (because I don't need them) or it won't give me free space on phone's storage?

Presuming nothing else is going on....If you really want then delete them and you'll get your storage space back. Otherwise just copy them over to your externalSD card or your new internalSD partition.
Coming from TouchWiz, probably 2GB of your memory is eaten up by your Nandroid backup of your OS...I'm guessing you chose to save everything internal, and nothing on your external SD card.

insufficient Internal storage

Hello..
I have htc desire 816 with 8gb of internal storage ....when i bought it,it had about 4gb free of that storage.....which is quite normal.
After buying it, I updated to lollipop 5.1 then i got it rooted......
Lately i've noticed the insufficient internal sotrage,so I've uninsalled ALL the apps and games from internal and external memory,however,that only freed up about 2 gb of the intrrnal storage ....so what is taking all that space despite there is No apps ....I know that the system files are taking some space....but those files only took 4gb when i bought the phone
Now i don't have any apps ,However, there is only free 1.8gb
I tried using clean master,but it only cleaned about 300mb of junks and cache

This is strictly a personal opinion but you should lose Clean Master and anything else made by Cheetah Mobile.
As for your storage issues... You state you've rooted. Have you done a backup? If so, are you sure your recovery is saving backups to the external storage?

Had the same issue. The firmware is in it's own partition with room for updates but some of those files fill up your internal storage as well, they did for me when I updated so the solutions are either use a root file explorer or Titanium Backup app to move some user apps to system apps , use the forum here in XDA for altering your SElinux permissions and enable write permissions to your system partition(WP.MOD_KO) so that you can use Link2SD app to move your user apps to your external SD card or pay to obtain full S off using the Sunshine app and have those permissions plus more enabled at the system level so that you can also use Link2SD app to move user apps to the external SD card.
The last 2 methods are the most used and also require you to reformat your external SD card into 2 partitions using EaseUS PARTITION MANAGER on a P.C. Instructions for doing this are easy and available on Youtube and Google if you want to read them instead. These are really the only ways to help your storage issue other than just not using very many apps. I chose the full S off method and Link2SD but the other works it just alters your SElinux permissions and has to be removed to do stock updates whereas S off doesn't affect stock updates. Only system file changes do like the mod I described.
I also echo the previous posters thoughts on Cleanmaster and most all "task killing" apps. Android has built in RAM management that does a good job on its own of managing memory and there is the on screen square button on the right that shows you open apps and tabs and allows you to quickly close them all out. You'd be better off regulating Wavelocks using Amplify app and Greenify to freeze apps from staying on . Root required and there are paid version but the basics are free in both apps.
I had a brain f**t and misread that you've uninstalled "all" of your apps so the previous poster might be onto something if you've done any TWRP nandroid backups to internal instead of micro storage. They can take up to 2 to 4 gbs just on their own even with compression enabled. If you haven't and even if you have my previous info and advice is still accurate for improved storage space.

On my phone, the .thumbnails folder in DCIM takes 1 GB...

Don't know all the ins and outs of the Android file structure but I do know that when I started flashing custom roms,CM in particular, my internal storage went up due to the lack of bloatware coming from my stock Rom. Good to know this though. Not going to delete it though for now till I find out what it is.

Some Apps, like WhatsApp save pics in .thumbnails to work smooth, i think.
You can delete them, but they will create themselves at the next boot again, i also tried to write an init.d script which deletes them at boot, but it doesnt work.
Also if you create a file ".thumbnails" which isnt writable, the system doesnt give you the space
Ive read something about creating this file before first boot after flashing so it works, but i havent tried it...

Your English is perfectly fine. Better even than some to whom English is their "first" language. Thanks for that breakdown and I bet that's what it is. I forgot about the apps storing their stock images in your phone. I used to love using the app called Pocket until I found that it stores all the saved links and images directly on your phone. I saved almost a full gb by deleting it finally. Great app other than that and if I had a device with more storage I'd still have it on my phone instead of just my computer. This is all why it pays to be curious about your own phone storage and learn how to navigate a good root file explorer.
