Okay I've been a little nervous to ask this in spite of the answers I may get, but I'm going to ask anyway. What exactly would I need to know to make my own ROM, tweaks, themes, hacks, and what not? I've taken 2 C++ courses although that was high school and 1 java course. I'm really interested in this, and if anyone who knows what there doing would take me under there wing to teach me. I thank anyone for any answer in advance.

Well if you want to get started I would say the easiest way would be to get an aio like mine here (There are others as well). Get your PC setup so you can decompile and compile apks and jars. Once you have that setup, I would start by looking around in the folders that it decompiles. This will help you learn where things are and how the apks work.
If you want to do theming you would need to know xml, how to edit images, and knowing java is always a plus.
Once you know where things are and feel comfortable editing apks, Then I would start learning the other stuff. ROM making, mod making, and tweaking will all get easier if you understand how the phone works.
Hope that helps get you started. Let me know if I can help you out with anything.
Shoot me questions if they pop up, can't always get back right away but I'll always try to help. Its been said before and sounds cliche, but read up. And I mean ALL over the net. The amount you learn troubleshooting your own problems as they arise(error messages etc) are invaluable and unfortunately can't be taught.
But for the other stuff, hit most of us up and you'll find help. Think I can speak for he majority of us on that one.

This is what I love about the xda community.... everyone so helpful I wish to build my own ROM someday too! I wanna take an android programming class but current college I'm attending doesn't offer it and I tried learning on my own but never could get android SDK or eclipse to install my old laptop.... gots me a way better Asus now and I always help with anything I know but that's simple stuff like making bootanimations, where stuff goes in the ROMs ( but I don't know how to make my own), I'm always experimenting with my build.prop and other tweaks til I soft brick and have to dirty flash my phone, I flash to different carriers, different prls, etc.... just simple stuff I'll gladly help. If asked I'll be a tester.... but I can't quit build my own rom

Google search will always be there for you when most needed
Ya googling only can take you so far. Not the same as an actual Mentor. If that were the case we wouldnt even have schools anymore we would just tell our kids. "Hey google it!" And educational systems would be pointless....
Thanks for all the advice! I really appreciate it, so when I do have questions I can't find the answers to I am happy to have people I can go to. Although I have to put off until I get my own laptop around Christmas... soo you won't be getting anything from me for a while lol

Hi I am new here and I would like to root my device to make it my own and get rid of all the apps that came with it, but I have a few questions.
1, Once I am rooted which rom is the best for my AT&T GN2?
2, Will I still be able to update my GN2?
3, What happens if I messed up during the rooting process?
4, And how often do I need to change roms?
5, Is rooting the way to go?
I am going to be dead honest here, I am a girl and some of the steps of rooting I dont quite understand, if someone can help me explain things I will be so happy.

1. Try each rom out and find out what YOU like. I personally use CleanRom 4.0.5 with no problems.
2. Why update when custom roms are better than stock roms?
3. If you mess up thats on you. But its not to hard root. I rooted and installed a custom rom before leaving the att store.
4. If you find a rom that you like you will most likely flash a new rim once its updated.
5. Yes rooting has many advantages. Ex. Wifi tethering, removing bloatware, custom roms, etc.....

1,Root with Exynos Abuse Apk, is there a difference between rooting like this and the other way?
To my experience this way allows me to remove bloatware aka att apps. And also install custom roms.
Installing the exploit fix may crash camera. Just a warning

Another question, if I root it with Exynos Abuse Apk do I need to install a rom aswell? sorry to ask too many questions
No. You can be rooted using the "stock" rom you are using now out of the box. You will have the ability to delete apps using the app mentioned before.
If and when you do decide to install new roms. You will have to install a recovery. Which that exynos abuse apk does not include.
A recovery is a whole other thing.
For recovery I use twrp.

I'll be honest, this smells of a "phone won't turn on" thread in the near future. You're not ready to root your phone and go playing around in recovery. You might be ready to root once you'd studied up on exanose abuse and the rooting concept in general. But right now I would hold off if I were you. TBO the Gn2 runs so well out of the box that you're almost there anyway. Make sure you are confident that you will know how to do each step BEFORE you attempt to root, and are sure you have another web-enabled device so that you can come here for questions while your Gn2 is down.
Let's us know what you decide...

Hey I'm Sam some of you know me some of you don't but I'm looking for a developer /themer willing to teach me some things about theming/building ROMs I've been around the forums a little over a year. I flash ROMs quite frequently so I know what I like/dislike about ROMs etc. I can usually troubleshoot any bugs/problems that occur I help people when I can A short version of my story goes...I'm 30 years old have one child a boy Tyler 6 and I was badly addicted to drugs up until about 2 years ago I spent a month on life support and decided my son needs his father and I gave up using. I'd be lying if I said it was easy but I keep my mind busy with work my son and Android.I love the fact that its open source and xda is a great community where people share their knowledge and help each other out. Android/xda have been a very Huge role in my recovery I have 2 years clean!! I got my first android phone 2yrs ago and since then I've been flashing ROMs and following threads. What I'm looking for is basically someone who wld be willing to sort of take me under their wing and teach me how to theme/build my own ROMs I would really like to be able to give back to the community that had more or less saved my life. Someone that will spend time on gtalk etc. Sort of showing me how to do these things I am very eager to learn all I can I work nights so I'm free early mornings between 7-10 am and all weekend if you would be willing to help me just pm me please I've read tons of stuff but I'm the kinda person who learns better one on one I'm always changing my home screen and enjoy theming it with other peoples work but I feel I have some great ideas that I would like to be able to contribute myself.. Thanks for listening if u did read this..

I read the reviews. People say its good for beginner's, but most said if you ever flashed a ROM before, then you don't really need that book. Most said its for people who don't even know what ROMs or root is..

It covers theming and dissection of ROMs as well as Linux commands it is a lot more advanced than just rooting. I read it cover to cover any moneky can root a phone they don't need to write a book on it.

I know I'm late to the party, but here's my two cents:
As far as I'm aware, all of the various guides (and toolkits) actually use the same method (although, the toolkit does have a tendency to bork the wifi). It's just really the packaging they come in. Whenever I recommend a guide to people, I always link this guide by Skunk Ape. It's intuitive and explains each step quite well, with pictures and clear instructions. I've never had someone come back to me asking for clarification after reading that guide.
Hope you enjoy your rooted phone!

Welcome to the Sprint forums! We're generally nice people. The only time you really see the ugly side is if you flash an international Rom to your phone (which bricks it, btw). That's when the sarcasm comes out.
Just stick to Roms made for our phones (d2spr, not i9300) and you'll be fine!
So after researching roms and reading/.watching reviews, it seems that blazer is closest to stock minus all the bloat/samsung stuff that is loaded by default. Is this correct, or would u guys recommend a different rom for a STOCK experience +tweaks/-bloat.
I swear if I bought an htc phone I wouldn't be quite as clueless.

Everyone on here would probably recommend a different rom. I'm currently running msg&chubbz rom. It's pretty stock, does have a lot of features from gs4. Does have "minit settings" which allow you to change battery icon/color, clock color/location, and some others, but besides these changes its pretty stock. I was clueless to s-offing my brothers evo lte, but I got it eventually. HTC phones are a little more confusing to most people.
