[Q] How to troubleshoot random reboots - Samsung Captivate Glide

Hi all,
I was using Rootbox for a couple of months, now since 2 weeks I use P.A.C-MAN. With both ROMs my phone reboots randomly. Sometimes it might be a couple of days without any problem, sometimes it's 2-3 times per day. I have never experienced this problem with the stock 4.0.4 ROM.
Probably I have installed an application that causes this or there is a setting which is not optimal, but I have no idea how to troubleshoot this. I tried looking in the logcat, but it's too large and verbose and without any concrete idea what to look for this seems hopeless.
I'll be thankful for any ideas that could help me solve this problem.

Bump?

I had the same problem with my phone, figured out it was the battery. When the reboot happens does your battery level goes down?
Sent from my SGH-I927 using xda app-developers app

No, the battery is fine. It happens with with fully charged battery too.

Do U resolve your reboot issue??
I have same...
My phone reboot even i recovery mode
All issues began after flash with PAC 1.2 or 1.3 togehder with rotation issues,
now on CM 10.1..726.. and they don't away...

My suggestions is to check logcat. Try to find the moment when the phone rebooted and see if there is any relevant error message right before it. If you can't figure it out by yourself, I suggest you post the logcat file here. Others my be able to help you understanding what is going on.

This is realy strange....
After two/three days with reboots (ca. ten per day), it away like a magic.... now I have 3 days uptime
I turn off pin walidation, for login to network after reboot in my pocket, and add uptime on desktop to see when reboot was...

[Q] Random Reboot Troubleshooting?

I'm running CM 6.1 RC1 currently, but I have had random reboots ever since I started using CM 6.0 nightly. (stock kernel)
I havent been able to get any responses in the CM threads since there are so many people posting in there.
At first my reboots were only happening when I had my phone docked in the car and navigation/other video was playing. Now I seem to be getting more reboots with just web browsing or playing games.
I tried to wipe my phone and put only a few apps back on it, but that still doesnt seem to help.
Is there anyway I can figure out what is causing the reboots? Will a logcat show the problem?
Thanks
I've been having a similar issue after attempting to upgrade from fresh 3.2 to 3.3/3.4, especially when trying to connect to a wifi hotspot for the first time. This also happened to me a few months back with the cause of the issue being the gps. I was able to solve that issue by reverting back to unrooted stock and performing a master reset. I'm going to try this method again and see if it helps. I'll post whether it fixed it or not. Can you narrow down the cause of your reboots at all?
I thought originally it was app related. I flashed a new rom, and had almost no apps on there. Still had the same results. Only thing I can try is a complete wipe, and install no apps. I would need a few days where I dont need my phone to do that. That's why I was hoping there was a way to debug from logs.
I've been dealing with the same issue for about a week now. My phone started rebooting just a few times a day, but the last few days it reboots every few minutes during use (not sure if it reboots while not in use). I wiped a thousand times, flashed and reflashed a half a dozen different ROM, went from Amon to Clock and back to Amon, but nothing works. I reformatted my SD card a dozen times as well. I called Sprint last night, and they're sending me a new phone in the mail. But I want to understand/fix the problem for hubris sake.
I just ran the latest RUU and rerooted and it's still randomly rebooting.
My phone would reboot every minute on any rom but rooted stock called sprint got a replacement. Rerooted

We have gone over hhis a thousand times, and it seems (as Eric cartman would say) we are fed in the a. It is a hardware related problem that mostly occurs on rooted phones. Unrooting does bubcus. Go to sprint store, spend from cristmas to new years in line, show them the problem, and get a replacement. There have been no other solutions found.
Exactly what I would have done. Here's hoping I won't have to.

can anyone post a logcat or DDMS log?
That happened to me. Other than the android process media thing. If you go into terminal emulator and type
Su
Fix_permissions
. And let it run through it fixed any rebooting problems I had. I found it happens when running new apps. So I just run it after every app I install.

Where is the DDMS log stored?
Will the logs retain the information say 10 minutes after the reboot? I usually get the reboots in my car.
The random reboots that happened to me were from using siedio 1750, when I switched back to the stock battery and now the HTC 2600mAh battery, the problem has since now been solved.

Random reboots

I had the Photon so random reboots aren't to surprising to me. Hell even on my old T-Mobile htcs I flashed so much random reboots were the name of the game. But with my phone rebooting at least 6 times in the past 24 hours, I'm not too thrilled. It happens doing the most random tasks. Stumble upon, trying to open Gmail once, internet browsing. I'm wondering if this is because of root or just the phone. Anyone else experience this?

No random reboots here. Did you flash any kernels or are you stock?
I got my phone Friday 9-16, still 100% stock no root and I have not had one random reboot. If you are on stock without root you should return your phone, sounds like it is defective to me. When I saw random reboots in the title I thought I was in the Old Epic section
random reboot = probably a dud
manufacturers manufacture thousands of these devices a day, and flaws unfortunately occur

I am rooted. I first rooted with the Zedomax method, and then tried v5 of the ACS method two days ago, which is when I started getting the random reboots. I now switched to the Zedomax Overclocked Kernel (not using the overclock) to see if that fixes anything. If not maybe they'll release the stock kernel soon, and find a way to reset both flash counters.
Im completely stock and have had 2 reboots today. At first I thought maybe my hip case was pressing buttons but I had it out on my desk and then I hear it reboot. Im like WTF? I remember it did this on day one a couple of times and maybe a couple since then now I get 2 today damn near back to back. When the update comes out to fix known issues, hopefully this is one of them!
just got one today. Running Stock..
I am completely stock. No root. I've had 3 already.
I've reverted to the stock kernel with root and no reboots so far. I'm making sure to keep my number of open apps low though

I've had 2 random reboots tonight. One was while uploading photos to facebook, the other was while it was just sitting in my cupholder in the car. The cupholder one was weird though, the screen was on, and it made the reboot noise. It was like it lagged on it, but the phone was still semi usable for about a minute, then it finally shut off and came back. Another thing is random keyboard freezes, and again tonight, my settings menu wouldn't come up until after I restarted it.
So far in the week of having this phone it has rebooted twice

Well, it's been 4 days now without a reboot. I'm guessing stopping services makes this thing go crazy. I thought stopping maps, turning off background data, etc would make battery life better (like it did on the Epic)...well, it doesn't, and like I said earlier, freaks this thing out. So, don't stop anything, and it'll be fine.

Mine is going to be 1 week old tomorrow, and I am currently stock (so weird for me I root as soon as I get a device), but I honestly havent felt the need to root, and I also wanted to run a stock device for a while.
Anyhow, no problems here phone is running solid, no reboots or anything.
I had to do manually restart yesterday in order to get the camera working again. Went into the camera, and it was just a black screen with the controls around it. I love Android, but I hate that it isn't as stable as BBOS, or even iOS.

Random Reboots - FF18

I'm running the stock ICS FF18, rooted. All seemed reasonably well for the first couple weeks, now the damn thing wants to randomly reboot.
I tried wiping, reinstalling the stock ICS, but the problem returned. Reboots happen maybe upwards of a dozen times a day. I've tried isolating the problem but unable to find a common variable...sometimes it happens when I'm in the middle of something, like web surfing or texting. Sometimes it happens when I press the power button, sometimes it happens when it's just sitting there not being touched, sometimes it happens when plugged it, sometimes when not plugged in.
I can't think I have a bad install twice and I'm not finding much on the forums here about others with a similar problem with the stock ICS. So I'm thinking either an app is being a b1tch and causing problems or perhaps something related to the battery? If there was one common theme, it does always happen later in the day or at night after the battery is down below 50%.
Does anyone have thoughts, ideas, suggestions on the likelihood of a bad battery or perhaps someone experienced something similar?

No...never installed the hotspot hack, did have foxfi installed, but did not reinstall after reloading ff18.
im also having the same problem as well, and the problem has became worse and worse, what started off as once or twice a day,is now at least occurring every 10 min.I think im about to downgrade right now to stock gingerbread and see what happens
My phone has always had some amount of random "poweroffs" (not really reboots, I pick up the phone expecting it to be on and it boots from scratch instead). However its much more frequent on ICS (FF18/FH13).

I had that issue on AOKP M6, then realized my power button was actually broken. It would reboot the phone because it was actually stuck down internally. Had to get a new phone.

The power button seems to be a common cause of random reboots and that's what I'm leaning towards now as no other software fix has resolved the problem. Supposedly Sprint ordered me a replacement to swap out phones. I'd definitely recommend trying a different Kernel if on FF18 and if that doesn't fix it, try rolling back to EL29.

Am I the only one whose GN2 locks up every once in a while?

I've been having gn2 from at&t for about 2 months. It's awesome in most respects but it sometimes locks up cold. By cold, I mean that the only way to fix it is to pull out battery for some extended time - 5-10 min. Usually it happens when I use some software, typically accessing network. Just now it happened when I used Chrome beta.
Also it happens sometimes after graceful shutdown that it locks up immediatelly on boot.
Seems to happen with any rom that I tried.
Does anyone else have similar problems? I wonder if it's hardware defect.

I was experiencing lock ups on earlier 7105 ROMs I was using. I thought power cycling was the only way then I discovered if you take out the S-pen (and then put it back) it would unfreeze the device. Maybe give that a shot next time, in case its similar.
Mine would freeze randomly...

I have never had a problem with mine, but it is still stone stock. That will be changing shortly tho...
I haven't had any lockups per se, but I've had 2 random reboots. I've had the device a week. Rooted, on stock.
I've had this phone for 5 months roughly. It has never locked on stock, Clean ROM, CM 10.1
It really shouldn't be locking up ever

JDEVIL ZODIAC POWERED ROMS
THIS IS WHY I DONT UNDERVOLT AND DONT RECOMMEND IT http://www.mediafire.com/view/?wdtd8fhletu7lpc
Mine used to do that. Turns out the problem was Superuser. If you have Superuser, and not SuperSU, installed, try switching them and see if it clears up the lock ups.
I would also get weird notifications about "shell" and "radio" trying to get root access.

I had this problem on my SII.
My girl had this problem as well. To remedy it first I wiped the external sd card. Wiped everything off of it incase of some bs data.
Then I wiped and re flashed the rom and only restored mms and the call log with tibu. The rest of the apps she had I manually installed them one by one from the market.
Now doing the above two cleaned up a lot of lockups but it was still happening. Final thing that actually stopped the freezes was getting rid of Chrome. Why was Chrome causing issues, I have no idea but after removal the phone never randomly rebooted and after getting use to the stock browser it's been smooth sailing.

Edit: sorry just for reference both my phone and hers are running SkyNote 6 with the 6.7 update and the saber 13.4 release.

Chrome definitely may be a culprit. It happened to me often when using it. What is interesting is that it wouldn't reboot unless battery is out for few minutes. It feels like some memory state , perhaps in modem, gets corrupted and isn't cleared during boot.
And it was happening at times with freshly flashed rom with full wipe.
I have this issue too. I know for sure it is ROM or Kernel related as it never does it if I revert back to stock ROM and Kernel. Mine seems to be in a really deep sleep when it happens. I hold the power button for about 15 seconds and the phone reboots and everything is fine for a few days again.

S4 Chugs and Stutters After A Day. Must Reboot to Fix!

So, I have been having an issue where about after a day or two of my S4 kept on (no powering down or reboots) it starts to noticeably chug and slow down. I have experienced this issue on the stock TW ROM and the Google Experience ROM as well. I have tried to solve it by using apps such as Fast Reboot to free up RAM, but it does not seem to work. The only thing that solves it is a complete restart of my S4. I have seen a couple of other people mention this issue on other threads and I am wondering if anybody has pinned down the source of the problem and found a way to fix it or maybe there is an app out there that can automatically reboot my device once a day, so I don't have to do it manually.

You can configure Tasker (app) to auto restart your phone daily. If it were happening to me to, I would odin flash back to stock and re-root to see if it continues. Either way, good luck
Thanks, dude. Will try out Tasker. This even happened to me before I rooted, so I might just stick with Tasker for the time being.

For anyone else looking for an app that auto reboots you device there is an app actually called Auto Reboot and it automatically reboots your device once a day at a time that you designate. It requires root and is free.

I think there's a bad app or something you're using. My S4 has gone +20 days straight without a reboot
