Issues with Ethernet and Micro USB ports - Ouya Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

The ethernet port on my KS Ouya seems to not be correctly attached to the board and thus can be moved up and down a lot. I've also noticed that it has no way of locking an ethernet cable in. On top of that i've noticed that the micro usb port used to connect the ouya to a pc only allows cables to go halfway in and the contact is sketchy at best (as of now I have yet to get the connection to stay for more than a few seconds).
Has anyone else ran into these issues, or is mine just a manufacturing defect and should be replaced?

I have the same problem with the micro usb port. My Samsung cables plugs are too short, but I have a slightly longer plug on my Kodak cable from a pocket videocam.

I've heard others over on ouyaforum complaining about similar issues, so you're not alone. I don't have any of these problems myself. I wish you luck getting it resolved!

Thanks for the replies JLCollier and Tadeo. The micro usb port issues turned about to be just that specific cable (weird).
Regarding my ethernet port, i'll probably try contacting support, see if they can send a replacement board. Will post here if I can get them to replace it; maybe others with the issue will be able to succeed too.

in regards to the thernet port, has anyone been able to exclusivly use ethernet in stead of wifi? I noticed that some apps/games will give me a not connected to wifi error even though im hard lined.

I use the ethernet exclusively 99% of the time, but there are some sideloaded apps that require either wifi or mobile network (which we don't have), so at that point I switch over to Wifi. Nothing on the OUYA itself should require wifi, however.

With both ethernet and wifi connected, wifi seems to take priority.
For example, transferring local files only achieves 1mb per second (which is what i'd expect on wifi)
Ethernet should get close to 10mb per second.
Hopefully they are working on a fix for this.

USB cable problems?

Hi folks,
i purchased a new usb cable today. its retractable, called 'Sync "N" Charge'. it is essentially the same connections as the stock usb connection cable.
the problem is when i try to connect my (Imate Jam) to my PC(winXPpro) it either freezes my pc, or puts up this msg.
USB device not recognised, one of the usb devices has malfunctioned, click here(opens up systems properties).
It does charge the Jam. well atleast the orange charge indicator lights up(i havent checked for actual charge).
The device drivers for my Jam are fine seeing as it still works when i connect with my original cable.
my original cable works fine, even if i switch straight back to it after trying to connect with the new cable.
I think the cable may be wired incorrectly eg postive and neg prolly fine but the data pins are screwie some how, sound like a reasonable guess?
Is there something else that im not thinking of/dont know about that could be causing the problem?.
bleh just typed all that and answered my own question. the data pins in the new plug are a little bit shorter than the power plug. I use a silicone case on my Jam which stops the plug from pushing in all the way by like 0.25mm. took off the case and bingo problem fixed.
I hate when that happens.
Ok well i might as well say that its a nifty little piece of hardware now that i got it working.
Which leads me another question, the reason i got this new cable was to be able to leave it in my bag and pull it out when i wanted to use my Jam like a 1gb usb card(1gb sd card). the times when i wanted to do this would be at university.
is there a way to make a pc recognise the jam like a usb drive instead of a pocketpc upon connection? i wont beable to install activesync on university pc's.
Thanks

mhl cable issues

hi all i got my self a mhl cable a few week ago and kept losing signal to my tv with it so i got a replacement and this one does the same... basicly i get the old style white noice screen at random when trying to use my phone and tv.. ps also their is alot of color banding with this mhl i have...
please please please help me, where can i buy one that will be problem free,
ps on a side note... can multiple bluetooth devices be connected at once.. ie i have a mini rii keyboard and the touch mouse is a pain to use so if i used that with normal bluetooth mouse would both function ok side by side?
I cant help you about the MHL adapter. Sorry.
Regarding Bluetooth devices. I use a BT keyboard, Microsoft BT mouse and a headset at the same time and it is working without any problems.
regarding your mhl cable
is your data (3G) turned on?
if its on then turn it off and try connecting your device to your lcd again
i had the same problem and i thought it was from the cable
but i read somewhere that if the data (3G) is on it will cause the disconnection because of the search for better signal and reconnecting to it
hope this helps you as it did for me
read something new about the 3G may affect the signal to TV. Mine also kinda weird - my MHL adaptor can output my Note screen to my home Panasonic 720p LCD TV and Samsung 27" 1920x1020 LCD monitor with no problem (but it looks much smoother on the 720p when zooming in and out) but it can't work with my in-law's Panasonic Full HD LCD TV. After connected, no signal at all.
yeah you really can see the color banding when its on a big screen. its there on the small display too, just harder to see.
did i hear right that with ics this will go away as they will switch to a high color depth always?
Thought I would ask the obvious question. Have you actually plugged in the phone charger to the side port of the MHL cable when using the MHL to output to the television.
Try connecting the charger to the MHL cable and then to TV and then to phone. Cause otg cable gives errors when done the other way around, so guessing MHL might give similar problems if you don't connect them in the proper sequence.
hiall thankyou so much for info.. ill try tonight..
@Teflanzy - ill try this 3g thing as i use wifi at home so this will not effect my usage
@bubblesmoney - yes mte it dont work at all without power cable, its required on the leads i have
as for colour banding im happy now i know its not just me and ics might solve this
hi all after much effort of testing i still get the signal loss even with 3g turned off is their any other solutions as the guy i got it from sent me a 3rd cable and all of them do the same
i had same issue.
solution is buy original, or very close to original samsung cable, i bought one and no more drops.

If it's visible on a TV then at least it's 100% certainly not a Note screen issue but purely a software problem.

Hii everybody. In a big problem here. I have a galaxy s2. I9100.
Got a MHL cable from ebay. Supposed to be official SAMSUNG adaptor.
http://www.ebay.in/itm/170773709311?...ht_2211wt_1139
And a high speed universal HDMI cable.
Now my problem is that when I connect this HDMI cable to the MHL and to the Charger and the mobile, it doesn't work the way it is supposed to be.
It connects fine to my TV(Toshiba HDTV) and mirrors the display, but only for few seconds. The screen on the TV goes completely blacked out, while the display on mobile is fine. Now I have to disconnect the MHL and connect again to the mobile to get the mirroring on the TV back. Again after few minutes the same happens. I can see the mobile charging via USB and even though the display drops on the TV, the TV is still in the HDMI mode(a black screen). Coz when I disconnect the MHL completely the screen on TV turns blue(indicating no input).
So this shud not be the case of loose connection.
Now can anybody help me diagnose the problem here.
Is it the MHL?
Is it the HDMI cable.(Although HDMI works perfectly with my laptop and TV)?
Is it the Charger? (Using samsung's box charger)
Is it the mobile, hardware or firmware? (on DDKL1 official release)
i have this problem like screen goes black out for a few sec at certain time on my toshiba regza. but its working fine on my phlilps tv. maybe you can try turning your cell into flight mode and see if it will help a certain? some said data may cause the interupt of it.

Thanks a lot dude. It worked.
But can't understand the relation between 3G and HDMI..
Anyways you made my day.
CHEERS.
I'm glad I read up on this before purchasing. I saw some fake Samsung versions, MIChn, I assume the OEM is MIKor? Please confirm if you bought the original.
I am also having problems with my MHL adaptor. I purchased one for £6.60 from eBay.
I contacted the seller as it was not working and they kindly sent me a second one, however that is also not working.
I have tried turning USB debugging on and off but it makes no difference. All that happens is it says USB connected and then almost immediately says USB disconnected.
I tried changing the order of how I plug the cable in to the power and HDMI and phone but still the same thing happens.
I previously had an HTC Desire HD so I am used to being able to select from options when a USB is connected!
Has anyone else managed to get one of the cheap MHL cables to work or will I have to purchase an official one?
Thanks for your help!
P.S. Hi, I'm new here!
mhl issue solved thanks for the solution

I am also having a problem with my mhl cable. Nothing happens when I connect it to my Galaxy Note. I'm running stock rooted version 4.0.4.
Is it a firmware problem? Thanks in advance

RK3188 1024x600 front USB not working? Any workarounds?

I'm not able to get to the bootloader screen because the front usb port is not functioning on my unit. Has anyone been able to use one of the USB ports on the back to get to ADB and/or get to the bootloader? Is this a known issue with a workaround? I've done quite a bit of searching and have not turned up any solutions. Considering what is involved in shipping this back, I'd much rather figure something out. Thanks in advance for any help!
Edit: I should mention that I have used the adbon password and it does acknowledge that adb has been enabled. Just nothing seems to work on the front port. When I connect my Linux machine and run lsusb nothing shows for the unit. I have considered buying or making a USB-A to USB-A cable to connect my computer to one of the back USB ports, but I'm concerned about how these back USB ports are designed. Is it as simple as a built-in OTG cable? If so I'm probably fine. If it is more like a computer's USB port I could damage my laptop, my headunit, or both. I'd really like to hear if anyone else has had to deal with this. Unfortunately I haven't verified if the front USB will charge a phone. This is my next step.

My front USB also doesn't work. I even got mini to standard USB cable with unit, but plugging flash drive into it doesn't produce any reslt.
I also plugged extension cable to one of back USB ports and tried it (plugibg same USB flash) but it doesn't work either.
So I'm also confused.
Does that mean you are still running the stock ROM? I have been hesitant to install the custom ROM because they say you must be able to get into the bootloader even though I couldn't find a step in the process that required it.
Regarding the USB ports not working at all, you may find that you need to use a powered USB hub. I've seen reports of USB devices acting up due to the low power. This is one of the reasons I thought it might be safe to use the rear ports with my computer. (My first real test is going to be mangling a male-to-male USB cable so only the data lines are connected to see if I can get those rear USB ports to talk to the computer. I figure that way there is no chance of frying any circuits.. Each side already has its own power and I don't believe any signaling is sent via the power pins.)
On my unit (MTCB-KGL-V2.80), I have used a T-Mobile USB broadband modem successfully on the rear port, so I know rear ports are live. I did take it apart to see if something was obviously wrong with the front port, but nothing jumped out at me.
So I have a bit more information on my headunit. BTW, I have the BMW E46 model with MCU MTCB-KGL-V2.80.
On my system, both the front USB port and the rear 3G USB port are wired as device ports connected to an AU6258 USB controller (http://www.sunnyqi.com/upLoad/product/month_1403/201403162331285643.pdf). I don't remember exactly which USB ports they are connected to, but I believe the 3G port is connected to port 2 (pins 6 & 7) and the front USB port is connected to either ports 3 or 4 (pins 9 & 10 or 11 & 12 respectively). Nothing is connected to port 1 or to the upstream port. The other rear USB port is wired directly to the MTC_RK3188 board.
All three ports are wired with only four pins, so I'm concerned that none of them could work with the computer. The USB controller doesn't have USB ID pins, so does that mean that the 4 downstream ports are OTG and the upstream port is for a computer? Unfortunately I don't know the hardware side.

No I flashed Malaysk ROM from GPS SD card. No problems. Just follow instruction. I had luck that I didn't need to recover from USB.
Did you tried with USB powered hub? I don't have one to try it myself.

I checked on my Linux workstation with
Code:
lsusb |wc -l
plugging and unplugging all three USB cables and the number did not change. BTW where did you use the "adbon" command? The only place that I could even try was at Settings > Factory Settings. Regards Flint

onoz ! i have twrp and boootloader, but no system files... HELP !

due to my own stupidity, i had unlocked and installed twrp with a lot of effort, as the usb is decidedly iffy
i managed to use a file manager to import the requisite lineage rom and gapps, and then in my infinite wisdom stored them somewhere volatile - one mistake i won't make again
and so when i cleaned the device prior to a "new" install, i inadvertently lost the zip files, and now the computer refuses to recognise the device
no amount of forcing the right usb driver onit works, because i presume the computer does not know it's a flo
so, is there any way i can get it connected and push the roms to storage ?
my skills at the command line are limited, but i can follow scripts
this is sad, as i was soooooooo close to completing the install, after which the usb would have become redundant (i have a wireless charger and can wifi file across with a working system)
is this thus my very first brick ?
or can i trick the usb connection into working with the computer, or somehow wirelessly transfer to such a basic installation, or rig an otg connection (i have no cables that would seem to join micro-usb to any female plug to use a memory stick or sd card in adaptor)
thanks for any suggestions :fingers-crossed:
Get an image file from Google https://developers.google.com/android/images
Try going into TWRP and go into sideloading (can't remember exact menu - only used it once to get out of a similar problem), then try to connect USB lead to PC.
Run flash-all.bat on PC and that should at least get a system on the device.
Maybe...
thanks for the suggestion, but the sideload could place the lineage.zip instead if the computer would accept a usb connection - that's the problem: sideload can't work because the usb device is not recognised
my best bet would appear to be load the zip via otg - the twrp interface appears to allow that
i'll report back here if that works (once i procure a usb otg connector)
I was in a similar position once and couldn't get a normal USB ADB connection with PC until I tried TWRP sideloading which kicked in the PC connection.
Did you try it?
OTG was the next thing I was going to suggest

As the USB port is broken there is no hope that an OTG adapter would work because it can not function without the data connections, exactly like PC-USB. Have a look at the port's soldering, it may need some re-work. If the port's connectors are damaged then a replacement is very cheap.

i sprung the back and was going to attempt to reflow the solder in case it had a dodgy connection - but i noted that the actual usb connector looked like it had been stretched, and took to it with my favourite pliers and performed some creative metalwork by squeezing it
lo and behold! the otg connection worked, at least for long enough to transfer the custom rom
thereafter when i reassembled the case, the otg connection failed but now the usb link seems to be happy enough even though that makes no great sense seeing it is the same connector port, and the otg works on my other android devices
still, gotta take what you can get, and i am now the proud owner of a nexus 7 "flo" with lineage doing nicely
thanks for all assistances

Ahh this explains why my N7 - used daily - has never developed any USB port problems! I thought that this USB port's construction was rather 'weak' so preemptively I applied a simple reinforcement, have a look at the attachments.

Bypassing GL850/852 chip for a better stable USB?

Hi,
After seeing many users struggle with this chip... GL852 is better but some still has some issues randomly with it.
I was wondering why not take the only USB directly from the PX3/5/6 board to external USB connector and then manage all USB device externally with a good quality powered USB hub?
This should work in theory, but you will lose internal WIFI (can be easily corrected with a WIFI dongle)
What do you think guys?
Regards,
Laurent
Not struggling here . Also, wifi is via separate USB connection according to MTCD schematic and at least my unit is like this.
My understanding is that some units came with defective USB hub chips, replacing them solves an issue where they slow initialize when cold.

Yes I just saw in the schematic and tested the two last pins 74/75 are in fact connected directly to the wifi board (RTL8188ETV).
Since I'm already board opened... I will remove the chip I'm already using a special hub in the car for Android Auto that can deliver 2.1 amp while using USB data.
Just a quick follow-up... I double checked all the traces from the GL850 3 ports goes at the back of the unit one very important port (USB-DM4,USB-DP4) goes at the front LCD for touch input!
TL;DR : Don't try to bypass the GL850/852 chip or you will lose touch input!
