[q] at&t s3 dead - AT&T, Rogers, Bell, Telus Samsung Galaxy S III

I was rooted with CM10.1.0 and was casually using the phone until it randomly turned off. I turned it back on and the only thing that happened was the "Galaxy SIII" screen flashed and turned off again. I popped out the battery multiple times to be welcomed with the same problem again. I can't boot into Download or Recovery at all. Anyone know how to fix this? (btw im on AT&T SGH-i747)

Try another battery.

Please don't provide false or miss leading information.
To OP. Fully charge your battery or use another one if its corrupt.
Try booting up into both recovery or download mode using the proper combination.
Use this guide to get your phone fully working again.

In some instance (very rare) your phones hardware can malfunction, but seeing how it still boots up I doubt its that's.
Follow my guide and you should be fine.

But it boots up.
As long as a phone is able to boot up its fine.
Like I said please do a little more reading and research and don't spread false information.

What about with it plugged into the charger and try to get to download mode. I thought I bricked my s2, took the battery out but it stayed on. Thought it was possesd bit it was plugged in to USB.

Can't hurt to try.

Definitely recommend download mode with cable plugged in to computer. Are you sure recovery doesn't work while plugged in to power?

Yep. It just loops on the splash screen. I'll try charging it to full and repeating your solutions. (It died off at 80%, very strange). Thanks for your replies though!

Ok guys, seems that my issue isnt the phone being bricked. I left the battery out all night and popped it in the next morning. CM loaded just fine. However after about 10 seconds of it loading, the power menu flashed, i clicked cancel, and then it immediately shut down again, and the usual problem continued. Any thoughts? (btw the phone died at 80% battery the first shut down it had, right now it should have been nearly 100% after charging) Also, connecting it via USB doesn't help at all. Sometimes the blue recovery words flash when i try to boot into recovery, but nothing happens after that.

It could be a bad battery. Might also be the battery contact points. Worse case is something is wrong with power channels on the Mobo. If it is the last then you will have to warranty the phone if you're still covered. I would borrow a battery first to rule out whether or not it is the battery itself.

The power button seems to operate normally, but that could also be one of the things that are causing problems. Once i find someone nearby with an S3 battery i'll see if it's actually a battery problem (most likely the case).

I'd thought i'd mention this as well, whenever i pop in the battery, the phone vibrates and tries to turn on, but doesnt actually do it. Anyone have any ideas what could be causing this? power button maybe, but battery?

If the battery out all night boots past the splash screen maybe you could, if you haven't, leaving it out and first thing try download mode. I've been in bad spots but this pretty crappy. Probably to technical for me but Good luck. Let us know how you do if none of the posts help.

Found the problem. The power button is always acting as if it's being pushed down when it actually isnt. The phone starts up perfectly when i hold the phone horizontally with the power button facing down. then when i put it back into portrait mode, the power menu flashes, and its turns off. any knowledge on how to fix this then?

Killed or bricked my Phone

Was using Odin , got stuck forever. The phone won't do anything now, won't reboot normally won't boot into recovery , won't boot into download mode. Totally non reponsive , nothing ever on screen , no charging icon . Battery out then back in , plugged into usb then put in battery.. tried it all.
looking for suggestions, phone is going back to t-mobile if I cant fix this
Try entering download mode again and reflash your phone. Download the tar again in case the previous was corrupt.
Pull out the battery and put it back in. hold vol up and down at the same time and then connect the USB cable. This will get you back into download mode.
Good luck!
Also, I believe this is in the wrong forum. I'm not a mod but I believe it belongs in the general section.

It's a common misconception (I did it myself) that the power button is also used in the sequence to enter download mode, this isn't the case. Just hold down vol up & down and connect the usb cable, do not press the power button.
Just trying to rule everything out
If this doesn't work for you then I'm out of ideas. Are you still able to get into recovery? If you are, try flashing a ROM and see what happens.
Just to clarify, what does your phone do when you turn it on? Does it boot loop or get stuck somewhere?
EDIT:NVM reread original post (selfn00b'd myself). Totally unresponsive? I believe you should still be able to get into d/l mode since I think they set that up as failsafe. If you can't then it probably will have to go back. Bummer
I'v herd that it somtimes helps to take the battery out and let it sit for 30 min
But thankfully I can not confirm!
May also want to try different computer and cable

its funny when people suggest you try something to power on your phone even after youve just told them you have tried it all. kind of annoying actually.
but same thing happen to me man. i finally gave up and sent it to samsung today, that would probably be your best option. either that or tmobile

Thats what I ended up doing , they are sending out a new phone. It is disturbing that you can actually KILL your phone using Odin. I have flashed a ton of phones a million times and never ended up with a door stop.
Im surprised the GS2 is brickable. I came from a Vibrant (Galaxy S) and that phone was impossible to brick. I was always able to bring it back to download mode but sometimes i had to try different combinations of things to get it into DL mode like remove sim or battery etc. What I'm saying is your phone can be fussy.

My brother, myself, and my fiancee all got s2's. Day of, I odin'd recovery to both mine and my brother's and rooted with no problem. tried it on my fiance's, dead in the water. did the same exact thing to all 3, didn't change any procedures. If you keep trying to turn it on, sometimes the led flashlight from the camera will flash for a second, other times it actually turns on and continues to work as normal but once you turn it off again, it may not turn on again. i got it to turn on again and actually odin'd back to stock recovery. problem was NOT fixed even after this, and after i turned it off again, it turned on again once, but never again after that. filed for warranty exchange. i used to think as long as you can odin back to stock you're fine, but it clearly wasn't the case. looks like we just got unlucky. if you bought the phone from a corporate tmobile store, bring your receipt and trade it in at the store because they give you a new phone. if you do a warranty exchange, they send you a refurbished phone (although the s2 is new enough that they might send you a new one anyway if you're lucky).

[Q] bricked? and won't power up (while trying to unroot)

I may have bricked my phone, and now won't power up at all. Here's what happened.
Last night I tried to unroot my phone in order to install EL30. First I powered phone into download mode. Then used Odin to install EC05, but Odin seemed to be taking forever, as the instructions said it would take 7-8 minutes... It appeared to be working but very slowly. So after half an hour, I decided to let it work overnight and went to bed, leaving the Odin screen running on computer and the phone with yellow "Downloading" on screen.
This morning, the Odin screen had several more lines of successful completed steps, but did not say "Finished" yet. The phone screen was off. I thought maybe the battery had died because perhaps in download mode maybe the battery wasn't charging? So I unplugged it from USB cord, put in a fully charged battery, and now to my problem...
Phone won't power up or do ANYTHING. I know of 3 methods to power up phone, (pwr button, #1 + pwr, volume up + camera + pwr) and none of them are doing anything. screen never changes from black. I've removed battery, tried powering up while plugged into usb/computer, with & without sd card, etc. It's like the phone is just broke!
HELP?!
Hold down the little pin next to the camera. Also wait for awhile and eventually itll go into download mode. Make sure you keep the battery out when trying to go into download mode.

DUDE THERES NO BUTTON [email protected]!?!$#%^?
To the OP:
Did you try leaving the battery out and having plugged into the back of the desktop *if of course its a desktop* and tried to go into download mode using the pc as its power source? Is it a nonstock cable that you used?. Its more than likely because you didn't have a non-stock cable or yours was bad and need a new one. Odin shouldn't take but 5 minutes top..... mine does it around 3:30 minutes..if it seems like its hangs then redo it pull the plug and start over. Usually factoryfs.rfs takes the longest around 2minutes.

First get a better cable, that's why the data wouldn't transfer. 2nd take out the battery and sd card, with Odin up on the computer connect the New USB cable and quickly put it into download mode and Odin away. At this point include the PIT and check repartition. You will need to put the battery back in after it succeeds and tries to boot. For mor tips sea+ch the Development forum for "How to recover a semi-bricked epic" there is a whole thread on it.

No luck on any of the suggestions above. Phone will not power up at all.
I removed battery and SD card, and plugged into usb cable with Odin open on computer and tried powering up phone into Download Mode (#1 + pwr), nothing (also tried holding #1 + pwr for a couple minutes patiently).
I have had a nightmare trying to find a usb cable and usb port on my computer that work together. No this is not the stock Samsung cable. I am using a cable that has worked for me in the past, but often times a cable/port that works one day won't work the next. So you are probably right in that my original issue getting Odin to download to phone last night may have been a cable problem, however my current problem is simply that the phone seems to be nothing more than a paper weight right now. Just won't power up at all.
And no, I didn't have repartition checked. Phone only had been rooted and CMW, no MTD.
Thank you all for your help, and eagerly awaiting additional suggestions?

Probably 4 out of 5 of these bricks caused by a failed Odin have come back to life by popping the battery in and out and trying to get into download mode. I can count the number that I have seen never come back on my hands. Some people give up to soon, others found leaving it overnight and trying again has worked. But a lot have been revived. Also he did not have repartition checked so has an even better chance.

[Q] just want to confirm if this is hard bricked

So I bought 2 sgh-t989 at the same time... one for me and the other for my sister
she lives in another city but whenever we see each other, I've always tried to make sure that her phone is running the exact same setup as mine just so I can always provide "tech support" for her phone
anyway, she went on some trip and afterwards, she said her phone wouldn't boot up anymore
since she couldn't get a hold of me, she brought her phone to a store to try and get it fixed (bad bad mistake)
she left the phone at the store for a day to determine how much it would cost to fix it
after being quoted $100 for the fix, she decided it was too much to pay and just took her phone back
long story short... a week later, I finally have the phone in my hand... and this phone won't boots up, i've put in fully charged batteries and when I press (and hold) the power button, it does absolutely NOTHING... not even that initial vibration when it boots up
i've tried to plug it to the computer and it doesn't get recognize
its permanently off and i can't, for the life of me, figure out just how to even boot this thing into TWRP... just so I can attempt to recover her files
SO.... my question... is this truly bricked?
do I have to break the news to her that all the pictures she took on the trip is now unrecoverable?
plug it into the computer and see what it gets recognized as. if its qualcomm823830283203 some like that its hardbricked

i was using it then it went idle then when i went to unlock it back, it shut off and started to repeatedly vibrate like a pulse
so i then did a battery pull and then it vibrate and the "Samsung sgh-t898 logo appeared" for a sec or 2 and the phone shut back off and did the pulsing vibrating thing
i got the same result when i plug it into the charger and computer, even plug it in without the battery in it and pulsing vibrating happen again.

Thanks for replying so quickly , i think you might be right about sticky power button, because when put in the battery the vibrates begins
automatically and then i try turn on then hold the power and volume keys it entered into download menu but for 2 secs then shut off again and begin to start vibrating(pulsing again)
so i guess the download menu means its not brick, will try suggestion once i get a proper torque screw driver

[Q] My TMO S3 (T-999) will not turn on.

I didn't have luck finding an answer to this on the forums so I figured I'd make a new post. I have been running a version (not sure which) of Liquid Smooth for a few months. Yesterday, I noticed my phone was on a boot loop. It would vibrate, show the Samsung Galaxy S3 screen and then turn off. I pulled the battery and memory card and tried again. It still wouldn't come on. I pulled the battery and then rebooted to recovery mode. I went there to wipe and reboot. When I tried to do that it said something like, "what you are looking for can't be found". I pulled the battery again but this time when I tried to turn it back on it did nothing. I have no vibrations, I have nothing on my screen. I'm not sure what could have happened because I haven't made a change to my phone for quite some time. Any ideas?

Any ideas?

Battery is going bad or the hardware is going bad.
What recovery and version?
Have you tried booting into recovery or download mode?
Take battery out and put back in:
Recovery: volume up, home button, power
Download mode: volume down, home button and power

I'm not able to get the phone to come on so I don't know the versions of anything I've used. All I know is my phone is the T-999. Sorry, I know that's probably no help at all.
You don't have a spare battery do you? If not, you should see if you can find someone you know that has one. It could be that you battery just went bad.

I tried all of this but did not have any luck. The phone doesn't do anything. It doesn't make any sense how it can just stop working out of nowhere like this. Wouldn't it mess up immediately after I rooted/added a custom ROM if I did something wrong rather than a few months later? I'm afraid that the phone may be done for. : (

I hate to say it, but usually when something like this happens it's most likely to be hardware related. If you don't have access to a spare, go to a T-Mobile store and ask to borrow a battery to see if it'll power up with a known good one. Batteries usually don't just die like that, but it can happen.
So you don't get a short vibe or anything out of it? What about when you hold the power button for about 10seconds? If you remove the battery and plug it in, do you get an led lit up? How about with the battery in?
If the battery turns out to be good, you could attempt the debrick method by KAsp3rd stickies in development. I don't see why it would be a brick, but at this point I'd try anything available just to be positive.
If you have insurance on it, it may be time to consider using it.
Sorry to hear this is happening to you man. These S3's are starting to get a little old though, and no matter how careful we are, they do suffer more abuse than any other electronics we may use. I'm seeing more and more posts like yours recently, I'm sorry to say.
Keep us updated on it, and good luck with it!

[Q] Bricked

So I guess I bricked my phone when I tried taking it back to stock... The phone will not turn on, will not respond to any charger, WILL NOT DO ANYTHING............................
Honestly I have taken mine to the point a few times. First time I drained the battery to the point it was there. See if u can get to dl mode plugged in with no battery.
Second time something weird happed at a strange point in the flahs...and I really thought I toasted it.I reluctantly did as it said in the "so u bricked ur epic" thread and un plugged it, removed sd card, removed battery and let it sit for an hour. I am not playing when I said it worked for some reason. If I read it I would not have believed it but that is the way it went. Give it a whirl....noot like u can mess it up more. There is a guy who will recover it if it is really toast...via jtag

So I noticed last night when I got up.. the phone screen background was kinda glowing like the area around the screen.. it was plugged into my laptop... So whatever I did to bring it back to stock shut off everything.. it looks like it could be working but no screen, no led charge light, no keyboard light no vibrate on button press.. nothing?????

This just happened to me, after a bad odin back-to-stock trying to fix some problems the phone just turn off, no screen, no leds. The phone is dead, can´t access to download mode either. I change the usb cable but didn't show any sign of life. After about 30 min of giving up, I tried pressing the Turn On/Off + 1 buttons, trying to access Download mode several time just hoping it magically works, and suddenly there it is, Download mode. After that, phone is working.
Not sure is this would help, but it least I tell me experience. Good Luck.

That is what I have seen to. As suggested above... rip the card and battery and let it sit for a while (hr plus I would say) and try again with no battery to get to dl mode.
