WiMax and You - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

Just so everybody knows, Effective 7/1/2013, Sprint has abandoned WiMax. To leave your contract, You have to contact sprint's account services department. And refer to this line in the new Terms and Conditions.
New Agreements on the Sprint 4G (WiMAX) Network: Your Service on a device activated on the Sprint 4G (WiMAX) Network may require a new one or two-year Agreement per line. Sprint expressly reserves the right to migrate your Service during this Agreement term from the Sprint 4G (WiMAX) Network to the Sprint 4G LTE network to complete your Agreement term. Reasonable advance notice of the Service change will be provided to impacted customers, who can then select one of the following options: (a) Choose to complete the Agreement term using your existing device without 4G (WiMAX) capability (b) Elect to complete the Agreement term by contacting us after receiving notice from Sprint to transition to the Sprint 4G LTE network with no additional term commitment required (Transition Option)(c) Deactivate service. Deactivations because of this Service change will not result in an Early Termination Fee (ETF). Transition Option: If you select the Transition Option, you will receive a free standard Sprint LTE capable device and can maintain your existing Service plan, if available. During the Agreement term, Sprint may provide other offers that are separate from the Transition Option, and these offers will be subject to a new two-year Agreement per line.

This isn't just for new customers that get a phone from sprint. This is for all current and new customers. There is no limit on this either. So the 30 days of notice to cancel does not apply to this, You can cancel at any time if you have a WiMax phone or mark your contract as fulfilled and get a upgrade to a newer 4G LTE phone.
Personally I cancelled all my lines already with ETF waived and switching all my phones to Ting.

This is great news...I will be heading to Tmo with either the Nexus 4 or GS4 as soon as I can convince my fiance that this is legit.

Well I added a source to back me up there. So use that since it links to sprint's new terms and conditions. Good luck with the fiance lol.
PS you might need to talk to escalations at the account services department.

That's weird. I'm on Boost, which is on the Sprint network, and I'm sending this on 4g!

Well they said after this point they are only supporting LTE 4G, so Wimax will still exist. But the support will end.

That's what I was thinning both virgin and boost still sell wimax based phones and I know just 3 months ago sprint was giving away s2s for free with new contract so I don't think its like they are going to just turn off the off switch and leave everyone hanging. Plus I remember reading another article that stated that sprint was working on a deal with clear wire to renew there contract.

They could, and they aren't leaving anyone hanging, per se.
3g is not affected. So you still have data, just not WiMax. In my experience WiMax coverage was abysmal to begin with, so I haven't ever had 4g. YMMV.
MVNOs are not postpaid, contractual plans, so Sprint (and Boost and VM) has no obligation to provide a similar deal. You can already cancel ETF free anytime on MVNOs.

Thats wonderful. I will do today, and post here what they say to me

By "abandoning wimax" I'm pretty sure they mean that they will no longer continue deployment. All existing towers will still be there, but it's up to them whether they will be deactivated or not
The Thanks button is just to avoid "THANKS" posts in threads. Don't defeat the purpose of why it was introduced.

I'm just waiting for a couple people to say this works for sure, then s3 here I come... Or the Optimus G, they're both free right now.

I would doubt it. Sprint has to offer something because they are changing the terms of the contract. Boost has no contract, and thus, no obligation.

Adreaver is right. You're stuck paying for it if you want to upgrade. But IMHO, don't spend the money. Stay on S2 until Boost releases the S4, which at the rate they are going well be within year's end. Not enough bells and whistles on the S3 to justify upgrading my Boost S2, but again, that's just MHO

Well first off verizon is literally twice as expensive then sprint. So you really screwed the pooch on that. Second is verizon doesnt have WiMax And they use a different CDMA Freq as well. So you could talk and text but you wont have any data. And the other issue your gonna run into to is the 4 major carriers started communicating device IMEI and sprint will lock the device IMEI for non payment so you will have a worthless paperweight.

I think everyone is missing something here... Yes you can flash the ET4G to work on Boost or Cricket, there are plenty of threads on how to do it.
But as the OP posted... He owes Sprint $1400 dollars!!!
I'm betting his ESN has been locked by Sprint already. If I'm not wrong that would pretty much render his device and any other device connected to that account unless.
Best bet may be to put your device on Craigslist as a parts phone and use the cash to get something on Cricket or Boost. They've been releasing so ok devices lately.

Sigh please don't post if you don't know what you are talking about..
This device CAN be flashed to Verizon or almost any other CDMA a carrier, even if the esn has been disabled by sprint. If he does want to flash it to Verizon it would be very easy to get 3g working. Just need to pull the AAA key from the donor phone.
I personally would suggest flashing to boost mobile or if you want to be on Verizon's network and you use 1gb of data or less a month I would flash it to page plus $50 plan (pre paid on Verizon network). For what ever carrier you choose you will need to buy a phone and activate it to use it as a donor phone.

Boost doesn't require all that.... just persistence. I've done it on sprint branded phones myself with no problem. You wont have wimax service though. Just keep calling back and ask them to activate your phone. They're on the same sprint network anyways. The statement earlier about Verizon using a different cdma band is wrong, Verizon uses the same bands for cdma as sprint so voice and 3g will work fine (who do you think we roam on anyways?) but the lte bands are different even if you had sprint lte phone (which you don't). The only way to get a sprint phone on Verizon is quite illegal and requires a donor phone. But their service is way higher ... your best bet is to just go with boost so you can keep your existing device, have cheaper service, and not break the law.
Ive actually talked to sprint about selling my phone to a friend or giving it to a family member , i asked them about the esn number and they said that it can be used, i didnt ask the proceedure.
but well were basically going to have to use the droid bionic pro for a bit till samsung comes out with a good phone on verizon until i can get this mess straight with sprint.
I do like the idea of using boost or virgin

I do not get all of the Verizon hate, it isn't all that much more expensive anymore than Sprint. The only thing Sprint has going for it right now is Unlimited Data. Unlimited Mobile to Mobile is already offered by other carriers. And with the whole Unlimited Data at dialup speeds over 3G? .
Yea, Verizon does try to charge you for retarded things, but so does Sprint! Half the reps at Sprint do not explain fees associated with upgrading/new line of service, so unless you know your stuff... you may get shafted too. Not to mention, did we forget about Premier Fiasco? Or BTA fiasco? Or yearly upgrades? Or Upgrade fees going up big time? Or TEP going up on newer phones? Or how Wimax was an empty promise? Or how LTE is only going to be in select markets in 2012-2013? Or other major issues they've been having lately?

Sprint suit for charging the extra $10 for 4G LTE that we aren't getting yet!!!

We should start a class action suit on Sprint, for charging the extra $10 for 4G LTE phones, and if it's not available in your area... Sprint shouldn't be charging the extra $10 until they deliver, cause there charging us for something there not giving us. I just want my $10 back for every month I've paid the extra fee for LTE, up until they deliver it. Who's with me!? Do the math, it adds up....

This has been discussed ad nauseum. The $10 is a premium not for the data, rather just for simply having a smart phone.
Sprint customers have been paying this fee for a long time. Long before they were even talking about LTE.

You're basically paying for Sprint to build out their network. I wouldn't be surprised if they eliminate unlimited data once they are done rolling out LTE.

Ok soo to get this straight.
The $10.00 fee was originally labeled as a WIMAX 4G fee only for 4G phones.
Then people got all up in arms about not having wimax 4g coverage and still getting charged the fee.
So Sprint got smart and said let's make some money and re-label it as a "premium data" fee. And now it's charge to all phones that sprint considers high data use phones aka most smart phones.
OP I can give you a box of tissues to cry in if you'd like?

I signed a contract with them 2 years ago, and at the time they were calling it a "4G wimax" fee, many months after the contract start date, they started calling it a "premium data fee". Well, they didn't have 4G wimax in my area when I signed the contract, even though it's a major city where both AT&T and Verizon now have LTE, and seeing how things are going, Sprint eventually decided that wimax was a losing and obsolete technology so now they've decided to switch to 4G LTE, guess what, we're never gonna get wimax where we are now, and it'll probably be another 2 yrs before they might even get close to having LTE here. So that means waiting another 2 yrs to get the "premium data"? Meanwhile, now that they're trying to fund their LTE installation, somehow their CDMA 3G has got even worse than before, to the point that I barely even get a continuous data connection, my voice calls often say "network busy" or shows roaming, and data speeds average about 100 kbps when they used to consistently be about 700 kbps when I signed up for the contract. Needless to say, I got fed up and switched to Verizon. However, I agree with this post, why should i have to pay the 4G additional fee only for them to realize they could get sued and change the name of it to "premium data fee", only to figure out that they picked the wrong version of 4G so I have to wait another 2 yrs, and during the process not only not get "premium data", but now not ANY data? I already paid for it for 2 yrs, and where did that get me? I agree, they should return people's extra $10 if they failed to improve their service during this entire time, and if you switch due to their non-existent data and voice service, they should also void your ETF becuase it is their fault. I never wanted to go to Verizon, so why should I have paid the extra $10/month only to have to switch carriers now?
How does it go to proceed with suing them?

The $10 fee has nothing to do with 4G / LTE though, so what would the class action suit be over? Its basically just a fee that they charge on devices they think use more data, has nothing to do with 4G.

When they first started charging it with the release of the original EVO I was very upset because I could never get WiMax to work anywhere. But after all the other carriers just discontinued unlimited data I think the extra $10 charge is well worth it to subsidize my heavy internet usage

I told them how bad service was in my house (100KBS download) and they did the unexpected. I will no ETF fee!!!!! All i have to do is send them my sprint phones(NS4G, Galaxy Nexus). As soon i hung up and my data kicked back on i had email from sprint explaining no Charges as long as i send the phone back within 2 weeks of cancelling and they even gave me a shipping label. I couldnt be happier. Now the question is who do i switch to??
TMobile Prepaid
$30 : 100 minutes, 5GB 4G Data, Unlimited Text/MMS
Yeah what the above said. Buy a Galaxy Nexus at the play store for $349 and with that plan, and watch yourself save hundreds a year.
How in the hell did you manage that! They didn't try to offer you a airwave (or whatever it's called) first?
Guess I'll have to give it another go...

I have been debating on doing this for a few months now. Sprint reliability has steadily decreased in my area over the past several months and I am about fed up with it. Good to hear you were able to get out ETF free.

I have to throw Verizon in the mix as well. Verizon has pretty much the best nationwide coverage (3G and 4G) out of any carrier but you will pay for it.
I had AT&T for a year and half before Verizon and their coverage was/is no where near Verizon's. Most of the area where I live is still on Edge with AT&T and I just had 4G LTE show up on my phone the other day (Verizon is testing 4G in our area and is supposed to be fully up and running shortly).

I moved from Tmo to VZW back in April and couldn't be happier. VZW has the best data coverage in America hands down, but as you correctly pointed out, you're going to pay for it. In the end though, it's a good value for your dollar if having reliable data at a decent speed damn near everywhere is important to you.
The straw that broke the camel's back with T-Mobile for me was when they limited data roaming on my plan to 100MB/mo and just cut it off at that without so much as the option of paying for overage. I travel to places where Tmo has no service. In those areas my phone would roam on AT&T, but streaming radio alone would eat up the 100MB roaming allowance. Screw that. I was a Tmo customer for 11 years.

Verizon is a great deal for me an my wife, because both of our families and most of our friends are on it so we go through like 20 minutes per month. Otherwise, I would probably go prepaid. Just look up some coverage maps to make sure they work in the places you need it.
Wife and I were on Sprint up until January, then I got a letter in the mail saying I was roaming too much...When I called to ask about it I was somewhat annoyed because the wording of the letter was basically telling me they didn't want my business...upon asking them if I should take my business elsewhere we were released form our contract that we had just renewed 10 days before. On top of that we got to keep our phones, which we sold on Ebay (and Iphone that she had and an epic touch) Thank you Sprint...I will say they do have very nice customer service compared to Verizon, always willing to help and not sell you something.
Just my 2 cents...
Chris
You will pay for what you get. I had T-Mobile for a couple years worst service by far. They claim its 4g in Chicago area be lucky if I get 1Mbps down. Also dropped calls very several per day. I. Very happy with Verizon fast incredible internet faster than my home Comcast and never dropped not one call.

I'd read into the prepaid thread a bit. The 2GB limit isn't a hardline cap that they turn off your data at that point. Its more of a common wisdom that's been determined over time from people relaying back their monthly usage and experiences. There's nothing in Straight Talk's ToS that says they cut off at 2GB.
Depending on your market (# of ST users, market saturation, etc.) and usage that month, you may or may not be throttled at the 2GB-3GB range. I've heard lots of stories of people staying around 3GB just fine, and a few (but still some) reporting 5GB or more. It really is market dependent. YMMV for sure.
Is this the new thing? Making a new thread on leaving sprint? One of these was just made a few days ago...

Sprint To Make Buyout Offer For T-Mobile

A new report has surfaced this afternoon stating that AT&T isn’t the only one who wants T-Mobile and its millions of customers. We’re hearing Sprint is preparing a bid to buyout T-Mobile USA, which would be a big move to compete with the other main US carriers.
According to the Wall Street Journal nothing is final yet, but Sprint is in the final stages of preparing an offer for the buyout, which of course will need to seek approval before ever completing. Sprint was recently bought by Japanese carrier Softbank, who is now aiming to snatch up T-Mobile too and compete directly with Verizon and AT&T. This could be a major change that would shake up the mobile industry here in the US, and one worth keeping an eye on.
This isn’t the first time a company is going after T-Mobile. As we all know AT&T tried to do the same a few years ago and failed, as FCC regulators shut down the acquisition. If the deal ever gets approved it would leave the US with only three major wireless carriers, and instantly put Sprint front and center as one of the biggest carriers in the USA. Now only if their speed and network was anywhere near as good as Verizon, then we’d actually have something to talk about.
The WSJ states that Sprint is busy studying the approval and regulatory concerns before taking this huge bid any further, but if all goes as planned we could see Sprint launch the buyout attempt early next year. The deal is being reported in the ballpark of roughly $20 billion, depending on the size or percentage of the buyout.
T-Mobile’s parent company Deutsche Telekom reportedly wants out of the US market, and is willing to let go of its share of T-Mobile USA, which is around 67%. So that’s where the unsure number above actually stems from. AT&T’s effort was worth roughly $39 billion for the entire company, so we’ll have to wait and see exactly what Sprint and T-Mobile actually have planned for the $20 billion being reported.
Even if these efforts are successful and a buyout gets completed, the combination of Sprint and T-Mobile’s post-paid subscribers would be around 53 million, which is a lot, but Verizon has the lead at almost 100 million, and AT&T is sitting in an easy second with 75 million post-paid subscribers.
I hope it doesn't go through. I hate sprint. Nothing they do goes smoothly.

Wouldn't be a bad move if Sprint switches to GSM after the buyout. If they try to foce CDMA on T-Mobile **** them.

Sprint is only awful because of their **** download speeds and because they are cdma. If they switched over to gsm and gained access to the T-Mobile network, it probably would only help both companies honestly. They need to get rid of Hesse and make T-Mobile's guy the CEO though.

I have the "Truly Unlimited Data" with the free 2.5gb tether for $20 a month. I highly doubt the DOJ will allow this offer to go through. And there only offering half of what AT&T did. But if it did go through... then goodbye T-Mobile from a customer of over 10 years.

The FCC will shut it down for oligopolistic reasons. I doubt they will allow three carriers to control the wireless infrastructure, it's bad enough as it is now. Personally, I hope it doesn't go through.

AT&T offered 39 billion yes, but that was for 100% of the stock. Sprint is offering 20 billion but didn't disclose for how much of a percentage.

This.
If the feds didn't let AT&T buy T Mobile why would they suddenly let Sprint do it?
And if they did AT&T would have a pretty firm case to keep this bogged down in the courts for years to come by claiming biased and uneven rulings by the feds that cost AT&T $3 BILLION due to thier "If the deal doesn't go through clause".
AT&T could demolish Sprint just by making their stock too volitile to touch due to the unsure nature of the merger that AT&T would tie up for years.
i left you for a reason sprint, everything you touch goes horribly wrong unlimited data doesnt mean squat if you cant use it. though i wouldnt mind t-mobile getting another chunk of cash for the deal not going through. would help them buy spectrum they want and benefits all of us

Why would they? Their "4G" was worse than some of my EDGE speeds. If they throttled at 4GB your bill would cycle before you hit 3.5
Sprint can blow a fat one. When/if you get a signal long enough to call their customer service - good luck getting anything accomplished. BTW, I live in their home city and I constantly roamed. WiMax gave me a massive 2-7 Mbps on a clear day with a full signal. They sucked so bad that I can't think of another way to say how badly they sucked unicorn d*** and gobbled up the balls without missing a beat.

???... I have unlimited data and never get throttled. I think most of their data plans are unlimited - but only xGB are at full speed - except the unlimited plan. I've been over 10GB just in my line and didn't get throttled (moved, was waiting on my ISP). You might want to double check which plan you have then call customer service.

I think the FCC didnt permit the ATT/T-Mobile deal to go through is because AT&T is quite large to begin with. It would have basically created a market with only TWO national carriers and price fixing rather than a fair competitive market.
The FCC has since allowed Sprint to acquire Clearwater and T-Mobile to acquire MetroPCS. This deal (although slightly larger) still would leave Sprint in 3rd place and 50% behind ATT. The other carriers couldnt object as they did before.
Still it would be bad for business allowing just 3 carriers here. Canada has 3 and is looking to add a forth. Would surely mean hefty price increases to us to help pay for the deal.

T-Mobile pays your ETF, now AT&T pays you $450 to leave T-mobile

I guess AT&T isn't to happy with people leaving AT&T for T-mobile so they are now gonna pay $450 to make you switch back.
So I say switch to T-mobile and let them pay your ETF and try out the service because if you end up liking your AT&T service better than T-mobile (which i doubt IMO) AT&T will pay you to switch back and you get new phones from it all.
So there you go for those on AT&T afraid to try T-mobile.

Basically no. So why do I want to go to att with no uimited. They said they have more coverage. My reply is I'm well covered here with unlimited data too and cheaper.
I added I don't need to have coverage 2000 mi away I need it 100 mi away.

lol that sounds like a fun way to spend a lunch break. you should have added "wait isn't tmobile allowed to roam on at&t for call and text for free". I think data on at&t too but for only 200 or 500 mb a month.
but unlimited data is great, been trying to find new ways to use it, so far i am up to and 10 GBs a month.
wish i could have shared this thread with more people but I have a note 3 now and its the forum I am in most of time.

I looked into the "switch" program, but they don't even give you enough to pay for anything unless you bought your phone outright. Those who are on an EIP would lose big time in this deal. They will only pay up to $200 towards your buy out, and up to $250 for your phone, which obviously if on an EIP you would most likely owe more, and the $250 for phone is only for use for an AT&T product. Crappy deal IMO.
Other than that, for the past 6 (excluding this year as I just switched to T-Mo), I have tried every carrier. AT&T did have fantastic coverage. The con of that is they are expensive for not having unlimited data, and their customer service is by far the absolute worst.
Verizon, well, they have just about everything you could want from a carrier, but the price. Too expensive. Customer service is OK, but they are stickler's with their contracts (as far as locking you into a phone) goes.
Sprint - Just plain sucks, all around. Customer service better than AT&T, but service is the absolute worst. They have decent coverage in some areas, but zero 4G (except for failed Wi-Max), and still have yet to fully do anything about this LTE network they have been shoving down throats for like 4 years.
T-Mobile. Great phones, great price, LTE, and so far I have had great customer service. I don't see any reason to switch from T-Mo, unless I move somewhere they don't work...
AT&T can keep their $450 dollars!
Yeah thats cool but I agree I have T-Mobile for truly unlimited data and no throttling. Here's an idea what are the exact rules on this? What of you switched to T-Mobile they pay the ETF's then switched back to AT&T got 450 then switched back to T-Mobile and had them pay your ETF's again then switched back to again and get another 450 making it 900 bucks then then you pay out right for a brand new phone with T-Mobile after switching again?

That is if somehow you got into a plan with at&t that wasn't a contract based one, and they didn't take the phone back from you.
If you own and bring your phone over from t-mobile, you get up to $250 credit to purchase an at&t product. They only give you $200 to help with the etf, which you won't get because t mobile is the uncarrier (doesn't have etf). Plus you have to surrender your phone.
Edit: my previous post was doubled.
If you don't own phone, you have to pay off the eip from t mobile, which at&t will give you up to $200 to do so, but the rest would come out of pocket. And if paying that much, I sure as hell wouldn't let them buy it back from me for only $250 that I have to use towards an at&t product.
Just do the math in your head using ball park figures. They worked in details so you cannot switch back and fourth without coming heavily out of pocket yourself.
You know they are only going to give you like $30 for a year old phone anyway. That's how they roll...
