Hello my friends,
I'm a brand new Xperia ZL buyer, I came from a SGSII and I have a few questions, I hope I can receive some help:
With SGSII I rooted the phone, installed a bunch of custom ROMS, firmwares, etc... and when I needed to turned back to the "original" stock ROM and firmware, and even reset the binary counter to take the phone to warranty and hide all signs of not allowed usage. I just needed to flash the stock kernel via ODIN to the phone and reset the binary counter with an app, Triangle away, found in the Play Store.
For unlocking the network I used GalaxSIM, and in few steps/seconds, I could use my phone with any mobile company.
How can accomplish all these with the Xperia ZL?
Is it safe to root and unroot? If I need to take the phone to warranty what's the procedure to cover all the manipulation?
Is there a similar mechanism as the Galaxy's binary counter on the Xperia ZL?
I'm sorry for my english, and thanks in advanced for the help.

u can root using doomlord's method ..(Check orignal android dev) there is n unroot method though ..however if u repair via PCC/flash ftf via flashtool i guess root goes
u need to flash custom recovery to install custom roms .. Locked and unlocked available
there are a few tutorials ..search the thread :good:

press thanks if i helped you :good:
It's a lot easier on a Xperia device. As long as you don't unlock the bootloader nothing happens to your warranty. If you need to send it in for repair, you don't even need to unroot, I sent in two rooted devices (damages from dropping) and nobody cared, they just came back unrooted and fixed.
If you want to unroot, just install the sony pc companion software that comes with the phone, choose repair software and it will look like it's never been rooted.
Thank you man

I have an Xperia Arc S, I just bought it a week ago, Sim Free. I really wanted to avoid rooting and flashing it for 2 reasons; 1. Because of Warranty issues and 2. because I'm happy with the current set up.
However I'm tired of background apps running and hogging up my ram. I don't use Facebook, yet I'm not able to uninstall it because it's an app that came with the phone. I can stop it from running for a bit, but then it it starts running again within a few minutes.
Because of this, I'm thinking of rooting my phone, because as far as I'm aware, root access enables me to remove these apps.
But I have a few questions about rooting.
A) How risky is it? Can rooting "brick" a phone?
B) Does it void warranty?
A bit of background information; Bought brand new Sim Free (unbranded and unlocked) bought and live in the UK
Android Version; 2.3.4, Build Number; 4.0.2.A.0.42 Model Number; LT8i

rooting can be able to brick your phone if you dont know which one you want to delete it .warranty of your phone can carry this out ,but if you unlock the bootloader they will not accept it.

Delete what? What can my warranty carry out? Not really sure what the bootloader is
Bootloader unlocked phones got repaired under warranty!
So the warranty is not voided untill the bootloader unlock or a ROM or kernel bricks it.

I think he means which app you delete. If you delete a wrong app you can mess up your phone but no worries. You can repair via SEUS or PC Companion. Rooting will not void warranty but bootloader unlocking will. Bootloader you dont need to unlock unless if you want to flash custom roms and kernels so dont worry. If you just want to delete apps just root delete apps then you can unroot if you wish

Awesome, cleared up a lot of confusion.
I'm not doubting you but are you 100% sure that rooting doesn't void warranty? Also, how easy is Unrooting? And which apps can cause the phone to **** up?

Thanks but Does rooting it void warranty, or removing some of the apps? Which apps could brick the phone if removed?
Hi, itsmyname.
The consensus of a lot of discussions here is that rooting won't affect your warranty. I've found this part of xda very useful for rooting methods - the zergrush thing worked painlessly on my Arc.
You'll also probably enjoy this thread for definitions of what the heck these guys are talking about! And see here for a list of apps it is - or isn't - safe to remove.
Happy rooting (but NEVER say that to an Australian!).

Thanks for that. So I take it rooting doesn't affect the warranty then. However, what If I'm rooted and the next firmware is out, can I update to it the "legit" way, or would I have to unroot again? Does Unrooting reset everything back to normal again, i.e. bring back all of the apps I may have deleted?
Also, I connect up the phone via USB to my PC to transfer music onto the phone, will I be able to do that whilst its rooted?
Again, have a good explore of xda-dev. But my understanding is firmware updates will come through quite happily to a rooted phone. And if you get rid of carrier-branded firmware you may even get the updates earlier than you otherwise would (come on, ICS!).
If you've uninstalled an app and want it back again you need to reinstall it, whether you're rooted or not. And there's no problem hooking a rooted phone to a PC to transfer files - I do it all the time.

In my country Israel,, u wont lose the warranty,,, but when anything wrong happens to ur phone, you have to delete that root b4 going to the company u bought ur phone from.
If I root using the Zergrush method (not unlocking bootloader) and I the remove apps, and I decide to update when a new firmware comes out OTA or on SE Companion, will the apps come back again?
Yes they return with a vengeance! Better to update the rom and the kernel yourself via flashtool. That way you can control the bloatware, I use the " dx toolbox " app to remove most bloatware as it backs all the apps to your sd in case you make a boo boo!

[Q] How To BackUp&Restore arc S Stock Firmware before Rooting to Preserve Warranty
Found this similar post for Galaxy S2 but I need the instructions for Xperia Arc S.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1366485
Phone Details:
Model number: LT18i
Android version 2.3.4
Build number 4.0.2.A.0.42
Kernel version 2.6.32.9-perf [email protected] #1
Phone is unrooted, Bootloader locked , everything is exactly how it came from shop (stock).
Question 1
My phone is in Warranty (is bought from Vodafone Romania) and I would like to root my phone, but i want to backup the stock firmware completly before all this process in case I ever want to reverse process ,or get my phone back to its old state like it came
I would also need to know how to restore this backup/unroot/flash/whatever the phone in case I need to send it to repair. I saw in the thread posted upper in this post a reply from sxi200 who said something about " use a download mode jig to reset counter to hide flashing" . I would also like to know about this method if it's needed or not in order to preserve warranty.
Thank you in advance.
best way is to flash your country's firmware..or else u can install cwm-installer and backup your stock rom in recovery..
Where can I find the firmware for my country or where can I find a tutorial of how I can install cwm-installer and backup my stock rom in recovery.
And if I use cwm-installer will I need to reset counter to hide flashing when I will use the backup?
Sorry if the questions are silly I'm just starting to learn those things.
U wont lose ur warranty by rooting u will lose it if u unlock your bootloader
I rooted my phone a little while back. No custom roms installed or anything. I rooted my device just to use a couple applications that needed root.
Does "rooting" the phone trip the flash counter on the ATT SG3? If so, is there an unroot guide here that takes this into account? I want to be able to send this phone into Samsung should a problem arise.
Thanks!

How to get back my stock recovery ?
I've follow the complete thread on Locked bootloader on Z1C D5503 by this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2634196&page=12.
Now ! I've successful rooting without unlocking the bootloader.
Completely done what I want, however I've one more question!
when I will back to warranty service, I need the stock recovery.
Therefore, how can i get back to stock without loosing my root access ??
Sorry for my English !
Sony doesn't have a stock recovery... Just flash back the stock kernel and relock your bootloader and now you're rooted stock.

I know what you mean but if I will flash stock kernel, I will loose my system modification, that is I've installed a custom font to my system, I don't want to loose it. That is point bro. One more question, if i will flash stock ftf exclude system, the system modification still there and the locked dual recovery gone ?? If yes, I will. By the way, now I'm in locked bootloader and dual recovery.
Thanks bro.

If you only flash the kernel then nothing will happen to your system partition hence any modifications you made(and if your recovery is in system partition it will still be there after flash) will stay.

Maybe I'm on the wrong track here, but I don't get your point.
If I modified my phone beyond the stock possibilities as you did (rooted, custom font - in any case bootloader untouched) I would completely reset it to stock rom before handing it over to the repair center - because I don't want to discuss whether my modifications caused the defect or not. I guess that's a pretty common approach.
Now what is the point in rooting the phone, installing a custom font and then flashing stock, but only kind of half way without losing the modifications? Sony repair center will for sure be able to detect your modifications then, so you could save yourself from the stock flashing altogether and simply delete your private data before handing it in.

Yep, I know, however the point to rooting phone is the only one that is to install custom font system and modified some xml files. Do you know ?? Sony don't add my country language and font, therefore we need to root and install it without void the warranty. In my country, the sony service centers are only check the bootloader status and rooting status, if they are not seen anything in these part, they will give us the warranty. Therefore this is the point Sony Service never see in system modification they only check these two things. LOL

Sounds strange, but if you say so...
I still wouldn't take a bet that they do not realize that the phone had been rooted previously to install the font and modified XMLs.

Hi everybody... I have purchased Xperia Z1 Compact few day ago and this is my first ever experience with any SONY SMARTPHONE device in this Android era. Before this I had Galaxy SIII and I learnt how to Root, Flash, Custom OS, and Reseting Counter on my own through different sources youtube videos. But regarding my sony xperia z1 compact device, I have been searching for the last 3 consecutive days on how to ROOT and get CWM on my device but all i get in return is total crap. I know about the official Sony Way of Unblocking the bootloader but then again I dont want SONY to know that I tinkered around with their device in the form of Unblocking and/or Rooting. There is 1 website which demonstrate how to UNLOCK BOOTLOADER in 2 different ways. 1- Official. 2-Unofficial. The unofficial way is very easy through FLASHTOOL but my device is running 4.4.2 kitkat and yesterday I upgraded to even more latest 4.4.2 build number 14.3.A.0.757. I think flashtool is not yet compatible with the 4.4.2 line for UNLOCKING THE BOOTLOADER in UNOFFICIAL WAY. When i recieved my device it was running on Android 4.3. So please kindly tell me how I can UNLOCK the BOOTLOADER in unofficial way and also root the device. I dont want any suggestions regarding OFFICIAL WAY UNLOCKING.
Oh yes one more thing. If i want my regional dedicated Android FTF file, from where I can get one. My location is SAUDI ARABIA.
Samsung phones have the best solution for providing regional dedicated OS files through samfirm ware, but about sony I have no clue.
Kindly help..... Thanks to all in advance. Waiting eagerly. I want to restore my apps and data which run on ROOTED device.

I was just wondering why you didn't want Sony to know that you unlocked your bootloader? If it's a warranty concern then when you send it back just relock the bootloader. I did that with my XPERIA Z when I needed to get it repaired and there was no problems at all.
You mentioned you want to restore your apps that need to run on rooted devices... You only need to unlock the bootloader IF you want to use a custom kernel. For example if you want to use DoomLords kernel then you need to have your bootloader unlocked or if you want to flash CyanogenMod ROM to your phone you need to unlock your bootloader (because it flashes a custom kernel to your phone as well)
If you ONLY want to use apps that need root then I suggest you follow this guide which has worked for me:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2634196
About region FTF's, the ONLY difference as far as I know are the apps that come bundled with it. I've flashed many FTF's from many countries and the only difference between them is the bundled apps.

Oh really? and how will I relock the bootloader then as I dont know the whole process..... and you mean I just need the ROOT access for my apps and not the UNLOCKING OF THE BOOTLOADER in order for the ROOT ACCESS to work... But many websites and tutorials were saying that you must first have to UNLOCK the BOOTLOADER.... and also how can I be so sure that different region TFT will work on my phone. Yeah you JUST need root access, there is no need to unlock the bootloader for root access. You definitely do not need to unlock the bootloader. I don't want to unlock the bootloader because on my old XPERIA device when I unlocked the bootloader I lost BRAVIA engine.
Yeah, the default language might be different but when you start your XPERIA for the first time it will ask you what language you want. From this menu you can pick English, Arabic etc...
If you don't want to flash custom ROMs then you don't need to unlock the bootloader. If you just need root access then just follow this article (It'll teach you EVERYTHING you need to know):
