saving internal sd space solutions - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S 4

I have been researching ways to save space on the internal sd card. Feel free to add a few.
Move Google music cache to ext sd. www.youtube.com/watch?v=lYFw9bEAzM8

i couldnt watch the whole video haha... something about the dude annoyed the hell out of me.
as far as saving a little space though you can also delete any system audio files such as the alarms and ringtones youll never use anyways. I also used titanium backup to delete all system apps and bloatware I dont use.

quick question. How much storage do you guys usually had left after full wipe and flashed new rom? Mine only has about 3gb left is that normal?

I have nearly 7gb... Make sure any backups are on the external SD card as well... These backups take a lot of space and by default are stored internally.. At least with TWRP they are.

Here's a guide on XDA for saving your Play Music to the SD

A lot of camera apps including the stock app store images on the internal phone storage. I usually set the the storage to external sd in the settings (if available). If the options not available, a smali edit can be made (if im not mistaken) or, transfer the images to sd when they build up

How do you access the ext from twrp? I was trying to figure that out.

Twrp > Backup > Storage: ... (its a button under the "set backup name" and "refresh sizes" button). Click that and change it to micro sd card.

Black Notes Hybrid 2nd Gen memory swapped BIG PROBLEM.

I've succeeded with [ROM] Black Notes Hybrid 2nd Gen by doing:
DO FULL WIPE TO YOUR DEVICE 2x (flashing newer stock [I8150DXLM3 - Malaysia - New] before is recommended)
DO RESTORE VIA CWM SELECT RESTORE DATA
REBOOT
DONE
everything was smooth & fresh everything is close to perfection. I was greatly surprise with it performance & smoothness thanks all to @Rio Saputro
the problem comes when i've successfully done memory swap as you can see on the attachment. it work well, just that i find it weird when i restore USER APPs + Data with titanium backup it seem restoring the app to internal memory (restored whatsapp app + data used up like +-20mb of internal memory).
I tried install app from play store some of it didn't used up internal memory but for like fruit ninja it used up like 3~5mb of internal memory.
once i've done memory swap i done like 20-30 apps restore using titanium backup when i reboot the phone it laggy & spiky then when i check the storage my internal memory left +- 500mb...
i've done re-flashing rom but still the same & also tried to changed the setting of restore app memory but nothing works.
anyone faced this? before this i was using Cow ROM v7 (Bionic Cow 2) but works perfectly which the rom comes with memory swap.
i've been deciding my next step of solution :
1. redo memory swap
2. do this (no idea if it's work on phone or even GB)b [MOD] MicroSD 2 Internal Memory Swap w/ICS support
3. worst come to worst stay unswap that's means wasted 64GB
SANDISK MOBILE ULTRA MICRO SD which cost me a bomb
I didn't know sgw can support 64gb of microsd card.. could it be the source of the problem?

Restoring TB backed up User + Data not recommended when restoring to new ROM.
What ROM was TB backup made with??
Don't restore App Data from one ROM to a different ROM.
In your TB pics, 1 & 3.......Internal Memory is exactly the same!!! 947/948MB
Are you speaking about your Internal SD?? [Which now has Large Physical SD Card Mapped]
I would also say that quite a lot of the SD card is unusable due to what darkteb says, 32G may be the limit for SD cards on our device....
Pic 3 says Total 59G, usable 39G....does your App Data take up 20G??
Android Default location for Apps is Phone Memory, not any SD!!
AFAIK, and understand, with a mount swap implemented, External SD card [1.8] and Internal SD/USB Storeage [64/32??] behave same as always, just reversed......
Moved Apps will go to External, which is your 1.8......no sign of any moved Apps!!!....have you moved any Apps???
So, all your Apps are on Internal Phone Memory.......about 192M of Apps, is that about correct?? [947M Free/192 Used]

2.oh the picture is duplicate.psps
3.yup device memory available: 0.88gb( the first picture)
4. not true. i've search & discover all other android forum most of android can support it simply just insert the 64gb sd card to phone & format it under setting then its usable.
5. oh..that 20GB is made up of my own songs video and other media stuff. nothing to do with other apps.
6. Really? before this i used Cow ROM v7 (Bionic Cow 2) i've all those app that i backup with TB before & it didn't used up like 500mb of my device memory also.
7. i've not move any apps to external
8. right. but for some apps that required download data after installation the data will store in USB storage.
Appreciate your Help.

I think what u did for swapping was correct except the restoring process. U can see that the 1.83GB (internal sdcard) was full. U should restore them to "Original Location". Select his under Preferences->Restore backup to...
Another comment is the Class of ur MicroSD. If u are using Class 4, swapping is not a good attempt, it will cause slow loading and laggy to ur device.

Hi yewsiong......
I think you may be correct in identifying the SD Card Class as a possible problem.
Thanks to OP for info regarding the 64G SD, but the class would also be crucial. [Good to know the SGS will accept 64G Card!!!]
Not sure where you see the 1.83G on Internal Card. In OP's pics??
TB pics point to nothing on 1.8G SD [Called External]...the Storage pic (2) does not show the top of the screen, SD Card Total Space bit missing, but I suspect it will show 1.7G....not sure where TB gets the 1.83G from???
For OP:
I still contend that restoring User Apps +Data is not good practise, and is not recommended if you have flashed a new ROM whether new Android Version, or same Version, like 2.3.6......not all 2.3.6 ROM's are the same, as we know.
Most custom ROM Devs say do not restore User Data!!! [even sometimes when going from one version to another version of their ROM.]

Hi Irish~
take a look at the bottom of TB pics. 1.7GB is the available storage but 1.83GB is the total space (some space will be taken due to formatting and partitioning)
From what I know so far, SOME developers do not recommend users to restore files from previous ROM is not mainnly because of firmware version but the permission problem which lead to FC. (For example, u allowed ROMtoolbox to have SU to run some tasks in previous ROM but haven't enabled it in the new one, it can cause FC problem)
It can simply be solved by using fix permission via CWM or ROM Manager anyway.
However, if u want to restore apps from different firmware such as from GB 2.3.6 to CM9 (ICS 4.0.X), some apps are just incompatible. That's why acro68 asked us to re-download from market rather than restoring it.
Besides, even restoring contacts/messages could lead to FC problem too though it is a bit unusual.

Thats mean if i restore to original location is to 1.83GB (internal sdcard) ??
But i want it to restore to my USB storage which is my sd card due to memory swap.
FYI im using sandisk ultra mobile class 6 its faster that normal class 10 sd card. You can go their website and check it out.
Ive tried out myself its faster transfering file to internal sd via usb tranfering feom pc.

Yup. I know that.
U can restore some of them 1st then use TB to move them into ur huge "internal sd". Two times should be able to finish.
After u have completed, delete the old TB backup folder and remake TB backup for this ROM. Hence, the original location will be what u want for future restoring on SWAPPED rom.

Is it formated in ext3, ext4? What are you using to delete the files? It's odd that after deleting the file you don't get the space back.

hey had an issue last night where I restored apps from backup and ran out of space on the phone (previously I had apps on the SDCARD but restoring them installed them onto the phone).
Can anyone point me to a wiki that explains where this data is stored so I can manually delete old apps data thats not longer install?

There is an app called sd maid which I use to clean up sd with corpsefinder option. Just be careful with the app it can delete things you need. Id stick with the corpsefinder option and the systemcleaner option nothing else. If you google how to really use the app you can probably figure how to use more of its options.

[Q] Internal storage

Hi all,
My previous phone was a HTC Buzz (Wildfire). It doesn't have any internal storage, just a pre-installed sd-card.
I got my One V now for 4 weeks, and I just found out it does have internal storage beside the sd-card slot. But what exactly is it?
In Settings --> Storage space it says it got 1 GB of internal storage, of which is 555 MB used by apps. What partition is it they are talking about? In ES File Explorer, I see /mnt/emmc. It is completely empty. Or are they referring to the /data partition (which I, as user, can't really use directly)?
If I want to transfer my own files (music and so on) to the internal storage, in what folder do I need to place it?
Currently a lot of apps are using my sd-card as storage for their settings and caches. Will they use the internal storage for that if I take out my sd-card?
Thank you in advance
Your wildfire could install what....20-40 apps before getting a low storage warning?
Install an SD card, all your apps go to internal, (except app data...ie games) and your SD card is your "user storage".
Unless you install over 200 apps, most of them large, you will never get a low storage warning on the One V and that is a good thing.
When you want to upgrade to a new SD card, just copy the contents over to your new one, install and go........that simple.

Ahhh, you mean that 95 or so mb of user storage?
1. No, you cannot move apps there
2. Really, not alot of place for music, some photos sure, just select internal storage in the camera app.
The 95 mb or so HTC left us is basically a joke, if youx have a suitable sd card (16gb ones are twenty bucks or less) I really sugest using that and consider that small space as a buffer if your card is removed and you want to suddenly snap a photo......or whatever.
In the future, when we have s-off and can repartion the nand that tiny space will be irrelevant.

No problems man, I'll start at the beginning.
Go to settings > storage, you will see:
Internal storage, total space 0.94GB...........it will report apps, and available. The two together should add up.
This is where your apps go
Phone storage, total space 95.23MB.........then available (mine is 95.21MB!!!!)
Storage Card, same total space / available.....this depends on what card you have
This is where app data goes, "user storage" ie. photos, videos, music, email attachments, downloads, etc. It will default to using your SD card if installed. If there is no SD card, or you temporally remove it, it will save stuff to your phone storage.
What partition is it they are talking about? In ES File Explorer, I see /mnt/emmc. It is completely empty. Or are they referring to the /data partition (which I, as user, can't really use directly)?

The "partions" are as listed above. There are some directories that you may not be able to view because you may not have "root access". If you root your phone, you will now have access to view and edit the entire file system (kinda like being an admin on a windows machine). Unless you are an advanced user, this is not really required. Some system files are hidden by default for good reason, change them or move them (or delete them like my Dad on his home computer**#@!) and you can really mess things up in a way you do not realize until later.
If I want to transfer my own files (music and so on) to the internal storage, in what folder do I need to place it?

Like I said before, the "internal storage" is for apps only, your "user storage" on your phone is only 95.23MB. Not enough for music really, maybe some photos (In the camera app itself under camera setting > storage > you can select storage card or phone storage) but....you are limited to the 95.23MB of space.
Currently a lot of apps are using my sd-card as storage for their settings and caches. Will they use the internal storage for that if I take out my sd-card?

Yes, but they obviously will not be able to access any data on the card that is no longer in your phone!!!
It is easy to upgrade your SD card from the one that came with the phone. hook a USB cable to your phone, select "disk drive" from the drop down menu, copy the contents all at once onto the new SD card (if hooked upto your computer as well), power down the phone, swap cards and reboot......boom....more storage!!!
I hope that answered your questions, if not we'll have to talk S-off, hboots, nand partioning etc!!!!
Regards.
Thank you for the clear explanation!
I'm running Lloir's CM10 build now. So I have root
If I understand correctly, the 1 GB internal storage is the /data/ partition? And /mnt/emmc is just 95 MB of useless storage? Weird that CWM has got an option to make a Nandroid backup to the internal storage then. Won't fit
I've got a 4 GB SD-card btw

Yup, you've got it right.
The CWM probably has that option for other devices. The HTC desire, by default (similiar to the wildfire), 512MB nand, approx 105MB for the user (apps, user data, everything!). With s-off, we had scripts in which the ext3 partion of the sd card would be read as part of the "internal" storage, so not all was lost.
But, back on topic, yes just nandroid to your sd card.
Cheers man, glad to hear your enjoying your phone.

Are you saving larger files like pictures, video, games, etc. To your internal? Maybe time to go through and do some cleaning and change camera settings to save to external sd card...move stuff from internal to external and just be aware of where you download stuff

It will graphically show you what is using the storage space.
It helped me the other day when I realized some app had made 1.5 Gb of thumbnails on my internal storage.
The Android folder takes up a lot of room. Like the person above said download disk usage or android tuner/system tuner..http://bit.ly/10ccwQw
..Also if it is your sdcard/Android folder. try JB ExtSD App Binder. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2021049

I will try this app
I found another app called: SD maid system cleaning tool.
It has good reviews but I am unsure how to use it.
Has anybody used this app?
I deleted some files last night I had around 600mb of free space, then this morning when I woke up. A warning message on the notification bar said storage system memory low. I went to the storage setting, the internal storage available space is zero!.
All my photos are saved in the external SD card, music are in the external SD card
Don't know what is happening, any ideas.
I will transfer the CWM backups into the external SD card, I will check if the problem still presists.

I am using CWM.
I think I found what the use is, I upgrade to the new CWM 6.0.3.1, now it is making a backup size of greater than 1GB.
can anybody help me/give instructions on how to go back to the CWM version before the upgrade.
How do I go back to the last CWM version?
thank you in advance
Used to be open rom manager, scroll down to older version or something like that, click on it and select what version you want..
Ok

I've been reading a lot of good feedback with TWRP. I like to try it, how I get TWRP
What is the file size of your CWM backups?
Presently the file size of my CWM backup are more than >1GB, before it was just maybe less than 100mb.
I don't what was is causing this. Has I unknowingly chnage a setting?
This is probably the reason why I am running out of space.

[Q] Question about available space.

So I know that out of the 16 GB about half is taken up by the Samsung apps I'm fine with that. My question is this it shows 9.72 total space and if I add up everything on the internal SD card I should have about 4.5 GB available although it shows only 3.2 GB left. Any ideas where I should look or apps I could use to help trouble shoot this. I am using the Dark-stalker Rom latest version. This problem did happen with the stock ROM as well. The only thing I can think of is I used folder mount to store some data from a few game loft games on my external card. Since then I have deleted the games and unpinned the folders to be mounted to the SD card. I'm at a loss and would love any input.
I attached a pic of the storage read out
Thanks

Do you use ClockworkMod Recovery and save your backups to internal storage?
That could cause this because the rom backup doesnt show on the sd card list you posted.

OK so yea I forgot I did a backup before I flashed this rom. Where would I find out where it stored. Im assuming I could then just copy it to the SD for now until I needed it for any reason.
