I've seen many people RMA their nexus 4s because of the power button becoming loose, unresponsive or completely not functioning. I've found two apps that may help you prolong your button's life. First is "screen off and lock" a widget that locks your screen when you tap it. Second is "auto screen on", it unlocks/wakes your device using the proximity sensor/g sensor. I personally find that the proximity one works better. Hope these 2 apps will save your power button!

not much but there is only one big issue,
your phone`s screen become unresponsıve in your pocket sometimes and only solution is rebooting the phone and that happens alot. especially in hot weather for me and there is still no fix for it.
For my experience is Awesome On Off Ultimate is the best for me to save power button life.

Power button wears off because people are dumb and they press power key with too much of force, like they are squeezing their mother in law neck. I had/have so many phones with power key and non of them weared off or get loose, even on two and more years old phone. Sure, some phones are deffected and therefore power button is ****ed, but, 90% its a user fault. Be gentle!

ive used those apps
ive used those apps and i had some issues with the screen, like when i was in a phone call the screen turned off and i couldnt turn it on even with the power button.
i think the best way to keep this button alive is using the volume button to turn on the screen and turn it off using the power button or toggle in custom rom.
I use LMT Launcher and make 1 of my longpress buttons Key 26 (which is the power button). So I still use the power button to wake up the phone.
People like to slam their doors on cars, too. Most people are oblivious to this.

That will work! Of course if you use your phone for ANYTHING besides simply making a call it'll get old real quick. Seriously though, I found a dozen different apps that are power button replacements and proximity sensor offs... there's also a lot of different Widgets that put a "screen off" button on your screen so you don't have to reach for the power button every time. I use a power off widget on my bigger phones to make it quicker to kill the screen... wow, I just realized how sad and spoiled we are! Do you guys remember Windows 98???

Thanks to everyone who responded, you've all been a great help. Now as far as proximity sensor apps go, are there any that stand out as being the best?

just try them, no one is going to hand feed you.
LOL
@ hand feed!
You can also check out screen off and lock. That's what I'm currently using, once you set it up you can just place a widget on your home screen, tap the icon and "done", you can also add a touch of old tv style to it
I stumbled across a cool little feature while the screen is off. Cover the light and proximity sensors for several seconds and the top half of the screen will emit an aqua blue aura that displays missed calls, messages, and battery. I know this feature is somewhat useless, just thought I'll do some digging after it accidentally popped up on me while handling the phone.
Edit: Cool, I didn't realize it was the Quick Glance feature. Thought I was going crazy when I couldn't figure out how to reproduce it.
Hmm I do not see that
Sent from my SPH-L900 using xda app-developers app
Doesn't happen here, either. Is this some kind of buried setting?
I could see this being useful if it could detect your phone is in your pocket, and when you pull it out, it would show that information.
It's in settings - motion - quick glance.
Then if you scroll down while still in motion to advanced settings there are more options for it in there.

Yeah I found it, very neat. I turned it on, I'll see if I continue to like it or if I find it annoying.I turned on a few more motion features. Why not try them?
The phone must also be laying flat (like on the table for example) otherwise it doesn't work.
Yeah it doesn't seem to be too reliable plus the info goes away too fast for me

Don't think it would do much damage to the 3100mAh battery. I'm still getting over a day's use, at least 6 hours of screen on with the quick glance feature on. According to others, it only triggers if the phone has been laying on a flat surface. So I think it'll be just fine in our pockets.
Hi there. Before update to JB on my S3, when i do my readings on the phone, screen blackout, press the HOME button, the screen will come back up.
Now, screen blackout, press HOME button, screen come back up but the app or browser that I'm using will close down instead of just led the screen on (where the app still there)
Anyone has a way to fix this? Keep pressing on the POWER button to light up the screen is not as Convenient as by using the HOME button.
Thank you.

Glad it's not just me. This has been driving me bonkers ever since I updated. It's really the only complaint I have about the official 4.1.1. ROM right now. Would love to hear some suggestions on how to fix. In the meantime, I've been trying to train myself to use the side power button for screen on action.
Is there anyway that we can make suggestions on this matter?
It bugs me when I read on the bed at night.

this has been happening on jelly bean ROMs (not cm tho) ever since the leas came out - at least for me anyways. very irritating sometimes but yes, you are not the only one.
Bump. No one else is annoyed by this but us or has any idea for a fix?
Only 'fix' is to use smart stay when theres enough light. Otherwise increase your screen on time to one min. I had to increase my time since I use it at night so often.
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda premium
An easy fix is just to use your power button as soon as the screen blacks out.
It wakes the screen back up without closing down the current app your in... I just tested it out and it works, doesn't lock the phone either.
But if you don't wanna use the power button then I suggest you increase your screen time out to one minute or more if you don't want the screen blacking out fast.

Bingo. This is the answer. I'd much rather have the slight lag in returning to the home screen than lose the ability to turn the screen back on with the home key. Thanks!
Hi guys!
I am missing a feature I used to have on my old Galaxy I9000: It is called "touchwake" and allows the screen to be switched on, if it gets touched.
Very handy feature and I think TWRP already has it (maybe it's a sensor thing, though). Has anybody an idea? Is this a kernel feature?

Correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't the stock standard feature cater for that (SmartStay)?
Monitors your eyes and prevents the screen from switching off if you are looking at it.
Why dont you just download screen on toggler from the play store. That way, you can just quickly pull the menu down, press a button and your screen will never time out. Press it again and it switches back to your original time out setting.
Comes in handy when its too dark for smart stay to work.

There is a confusion on this function. This kind of feature allow you to turn on the screen without pressing any physical button. You can take the phone out from your pocket and swipe or touch the screen and the device will wake up.

Obvious solution: increase your time-out setting.
I have it at 2 min (hate the absurdly short time-out many people seem to use) and it never times out when I am reading.
Plus, as already mentioned, if for whatever reason that I can't imagine you want to keep a short time-out setting, you can always use SmartStay which works surprisingly well and can be very easily and quickly turned on and off with its toggle in the notification shade.
Guys, this isn't about SmartStay or the likes. I am already using it, also QuickGlance. TouchWake means turning ON the display by merely touching it (2 seconds for example). I was asking for this feature in the Perseus kernel thread, if you like the idea, just vote up my request.
PS: I also tried "proximity screen off" from playstore. It's nice but still not what I was looking for. A fast double tap for screen on would be nice for example.

I fell in love with this feature seeing it on a BB10 device (and that's just about the ONLY thing that I like about the BB10 BTW :laugh.
It would be awesome and would enable us to get rid of the physical home button (which wastes space and is a durability worry but it's still needed to wake the phone up as it's way more comfortable to use than the power button).
As I've seen on your comments you really don't know what it is.
