On my external SD card's DCIM folder there are a ton of files with a Mu symbol and I have no clue what they are. Does anybody know? Here's a screenshot.

Judging by the date, maybe something weird happened while you were using twrp or cwm?
Never seen that before.
What rom are you using? Have you used the file manager from recovery at all?
Also, did you intentionally put the Titanium Backup folder inside the DCIM folder? If not the something msy be really screwy.
Maybe that has something to do with it.
Keep an eye on it too. Check how many of those are there now, and see if the number changes.

Yeah I use TWRP, but they've been there for a while. And yeah I accidently put that TB folder there lol. I'm thinking of moving all my stuff off the sd card and formatting it.
Sent from my SGH-T999
That's probably a good idea. First though, try to delete them all then reboot and see if they come back. Just curious really.

I remember having those on my galaxy nexus. I just ended up making a backup of what I wanted and just formatting my phone and It seemed to solve the problem.

Okay, so I researched this.problem and I seem to be having the exact opposite problem than what others are having. MIUI on the Sgh-T989 recognizes my SD card and downloads everything to it and I can't seem to get anything onto the internal SD card. Its like the internal SD card is non existant. Other apps like ES File Explorer and Titanium Backup can recognize it but no other apps. MC3 is downloading to SD when all the files are already in the internal. I unmounted it and then ran MC3 but it refuses to download to anything else.

Are you in the correct forums? I'm pretty sure we don't have a working MIUI ROM.

We do. I'll link it.

Sorry. I didn't know we had this. But there are people with this problem, just check the 20th post, by Jfiz DaWizz.

There's a sticky regarding cm7 mounting.. and since MIUI is based off of cm7 did you try that ?

This sounds like a dumb question but I've never had this happen to me before. The other day I switched to Eugene's MIUI Patchrom. I was on it for about ten minutes when I realized I couldn't access my pictures. My gallery was showing a couple hundred when I have over 2000. I assumed it was the rom since it's not super stable. I restored my backup or Juggernaut and I just realized I can still not see my pictures. Surely they didn't get deleted, right? Please help because those pictures mean a lot to me. Thanks.

Have you tried connecting your phone to your computer and looking for your files that way?

I don't know of any ROMS that will wipe the sdcard. Did you check the DCIM directory with root explorer or via USB from your PC?
Yeah I did. Like I said, the folders are still there with the names I gave them, they're just empty.
Sent from my SGH-T989 using XDA
O well, have fun finding the pictures/ taking them again.
Besides the attributes getting changed by accident to hidden, I'd cough it up as a loss unless you can manage to do a file recovery program to scrape them off somehow

Probably got corrupted, do as advised and run a recovery search

O&O Software makes a really good file/folder/partition recovery program. I'd imagine it would work on sd, but im not 100% sure.. It never hurts to check
That's always my biggest worry when switching to a new ROM, because all my videos and pics are of my kids for the most part.
I personally don't know the best way to get them back, and the position you are in really sucks. What I tend to do is backup all my photos and pictures to my external SD card (32gb, so I have the space). Also make a backup on my computer and make another backup through a cloud storage program of your choice, I am currently using Drive.
I know that is a bit of overkill, but again, they are pics and vids of my kids growing up so I want to be 100% certain they don't get lost.
Hopefully you are able to find those pics, if not, perhaps my suggestion will help you in the future. Peace.
Thanks for the help, those who actually suggested something. I used some app from the gay store and it was able to recover some of my pictures, but not all. I suppose I'll just have to be more careful and make backups in the future.

I've always used ROM manager to make, rename or delete a nandroid. The app shows that there are no backups but when I go into CWM it shows there are 6! I tried to save my current setup and was unable to because there is no available memory.
Those 6 are clogging up potential available space does anybody know how else I can delete them?? I searched a bunch of files in Root Explorer but couldnt find anything. I want to check out TWRP because I hear a lot of hype about it but need to get this situation dealt with first.
Any pointers will be greatly appreciated

Did you set up which location you're storing it in... In ROM manager that is. You should check out both your emmc and sd card or uhhh depending on your Rom, sdcard and ext

There it is, nice!! External SD Card. I can't believe I overlooked that file. Thank you for the help!
I obviously can't see what's right in front of my face, I swear I could be in a room with an elephant and not even know it was there :silly:
Yeah you could set up ROM manager to external sd card so you can organize it that way lol. And that phrase is totally used out of context but works lol

So today I noticed all my photos in my gallery app were greyed out... thought it was strange. Selected one... big grey pic... then another.... and another....
These pics span the internal storage and sd card....
First I deleted the cache to the gallery app.... same result...
OK... went into es file explorer.... dcim... camera..... all JPEGs gone....
Went into the sdcard..... have multiple folders under pics main folder... all empty... except for any video files...
Then mounted on my PC... and they also don't show.
What could of happened to cause this.... I wouldn't normally care but I lost a lot of pics of my kids... that spanned 3+ years that weren't all backed up. Any help on the snowballs chance in hell of recovering this would be appreciated.... but at the very least any reasonable explanation as to why this may have happened would be much appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

You could try pulling the sd card out, putting it in the computer directly, and then using a data restore or undelete app. As long as the sectors haven't been rewritten, they should be recoverable.
Also, this may help for the future. I use my phone to capture my kids as well. What I've been doing is using the auto upload features in both Google+ and DropBox, to back pics up in replicate. Sucks for bandwidth and battery usage, but it is what is is. lol
Hope you get them back!

Unfortunately, I don't think that one's doable with the way the device mounts. You may be able to mount it as a drive via recovery, but I'm not sure.
Edit: Just noticed your other post. You're asking the right thing. Hope you get an answer. If CWM doesn't have it, you could try TWRP.

Recova is what i used on the SD card and worked perfectly.
Also, i flashed TWRP... and the option isnt there either, so i will assume that its not possible on our phone yet... so for now im screwed...
am afraid to install any new programs or files, in fear of losing my more current pics, which were internally.
That happened to me too, but i am using the GS2 Tmobile, after flashing cm 9 nightlybuild. but my picture on my sd card, so i guess will use recova.
Thanks and hope you get your pictures recovered.

It sucks that you lost quite a few pictures that mean a lot to you. I do see sincerely hope that you now understand the importance of backing up these important files. This really goes for everyone. Keep important files backed up in at least one other place, and keep it up to date. Most people don't start doing backups until they've lost something that's irreplaceable.
I seem to be having an issue which started just recently anytime I flash a new rom or nightly release of AOKP or CM10 all the content in my DCIM/Camera seems to be gone the content in the thumbnails folder is still there but the photos at completely all gone any ideas what could be causing this issue? Thank you in advance.
The photos are gone in your internal sdcard?
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda app-developers app
well I just checked all images are gone... internal and external photos.. images..wallpapers... just gone very strange plugged into pc and I see some of the files there for the images and the file size but can't copy any of them and on the phone the folders are just empty
Maybe you could get lucky using a data recovery tool on your sdcard. There should be some free/trial ones on the net. You just gotta search em out.
As for why....no idea. Obviously it shouldn't be doing that! Maybe the updater-script does something like format data or something...though tgat diesnt make sense either....has anyone else in the rom thread reported this too?

Actually someone said that they had the same issue with AOSP roms and started using quickpic instead and solved the issue
I don't understand how an app could stop the files from getting deleted.

Indeed I mean my new pictures I'm taking seem to be staying but everything all of my 700 images and pictures are gone nothing left which is very strange how only all the image media got wiped on external and internal sd
I don't see why or how but is it possible they were somehow actually stored in the apps data/cache folder and just linked to the sdcard??
It seems far fetched but its the only real explanation I could come up with other than something being corrupt and not working as intended.....
That's an odd one man.
Have you looked into any data recovery tools? I've heard of some success with them dealing with flash media like sdcards.

I'll look into the recovery tool and I was thinking the same with it being tied to the cache as well just really strange never had this issue before
