What is your S4's temperature? - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S 4

Mind to share? Dial *#0228# to show.
Here is my numbers(indoor usage) :
When idle: 24C to 27C (75F to 82F)
When general browsing etc.: 28C to 32C (84F to 90F)
When playing video or game: 34C to 39C (93F to 102F)

27C-28C idle for me.
28C-34C when just doing general browsing such as reading XDA.
35C-36C after about 5 minutes of light gaming (e.g. Candy Crush Saga)
Running Wicked v4 with included kernel, underclocked to 1674MHz, contained in a Neo Hybrid case.
Above temps while not charging. Charging temps are much higher.

Wow... I average between 75 and 85F (29-35C) under normal use/idle... I've seen up to 105F (40C) under heavy use or after flashing a ROM and the initial setup.

I think those temperature readings are for the battery. If you want to check the real time CPU temperature check out system tuner. Btw, you have to be rooted in order system tuner to access the temp readings.

Yeah i think those are their battery temp readings. My CPU has heated to over 70 degrees under heavy gaming, and averages 40's and 50's under basic usage.

+1 similar results here. Although just noticed the external thermistor reading from *#0228# is similar to cpu temperature but with lower refresh rate. It is on par with my idle temps but doesn't show real time hikes. So here are my external thermistor readings. While browsing on Wifi at room temperature, it is about 38-40 C and under heavy gaming it goes up to 48C (playing Real Racing 3 about 15 min)

If you are on stock rom it should work. Make sure to dial the exact *#0228#. There will be two temperatures on that page. One on top, which is the battery temp. And one on the bottom which is right under 'external thermistor'. I think, external thermistor reading is either the average cpu temperature or a sensor that is very close to cpu.

Yeah i'm not on stock ROM, but my kernel has a CPU temp reader that checks every second, and its currently at 44, under mild usage.

interesting stuff, I'm planning on buying a S4 soon

It makes me somewhat feel better knowing that mine is just normal like everyone else's.
However, this is really a too "hot" a phone for me. so I am dumping this one for something else.
It was fun ride, but it gets uncomfortable when walking with this little "heat radiator" in my pants pocket. For people having cold hands, it might be a feature, but, too bad, it is not for me. I might check out the Galaxy Tab 3 in few months.

Lol I'm running PAC man w/Chronic Kernel, Apex launcher.
Friday on one of the hottest days in Phoenix 116, in my car w/out A/C using I heart radio on my phone. The radio stopped, after a minute I looked down found it had rebooted it. So I went to the home screen where I have system tuner pro widget and the CPU temp was 200°F... oh crap, pulled battery out left it like that till I got home.
Got home the phone was still hot, so I put both the phone and battery in the fridge for 30 min. Installed the battery after retrieving it and the phone and crossed my fingers and made a prayer. Phone booted up and still operates as advertise:thumbup:.

From GT-I9505 Dial *#0228# I only see battery status and "quick start" button, so I used *#0*#, select sensor, select thermistor, "AP" column (= Android Processor Temp). Is that the same thing your looking to compare?
At boot: 31C
Idle: 36C to 37C
After 3min video playback: 45C peak

Something Ive always wondered, what is an "AVERAGE" battery temperature for cell phones? I ask because im using setcpu and i never knew the temp. to start getting concerned . Right now it is 87.6 degrees with the low clock at 1ghz on demand at all times.

That is normal temperature. Once you use the phone (play games, internet, etc) it will reach around 90-100 degrees.

There are several different applications on the android market which will tell you the temperature of your battery in Celsius and Fahrenheit. That is about average temp, I have two phones sitting next to me right now and they are both in the mid 80's range on the temp. You want to be concerned if your battery reaches temperatures exceeding 101 degrees (Fahrenheit) (38 Degrees Celsius) when doing any activity and especially if it is getting that hot while sitting in standby.
I've had a recent problem with mine the other day I was having a really bad battery drain and the battery was over heating bad(im talking 105 degrees) since then I was able to fix what was draining the battery but I noticed when I use only my car charger (which was meant fire my vibrant) it heats up. I'm thinking the car charger voltage is different.

Mine stays around 82 while screen off. On and playing games it got up to 110.

40 degrees Celsius?

My Galaxy Nexus often increases its heat to around 42 degrees Celsius (108 fahrenheit) constantly with minimal use (light 2D gaming for about 5 minutes), surfing the app store and playing around with the menus for a 10 minutes. I have installed the battery monitor widget application (free) which tells me everything and gives a timeline of different temperatures the phone reaches.
Constantly the phone is 30 degrees Celsius (86 Fahrenheit) and above, even during minimal use of apps (only running one app at a time, I selected the phone to only use 2G networks and it has no data plan).
This seems very very hot for a phone. My Galaxy S2 doesn't get past 28 degrees celsius (82 fahrenheit) under very heavy use whilst on 3G. My HTC Mozart is the same as the Galaxy, it barely gets above this temperature. Is the Nexus supposed to get this hot?
So far my battery life is set at 17 hours battery life with minimal phone/texting on 2G (literally 2 text messages and 1 phone call per day), 30 minutes of light 2D gaming and zero music or videos being played. There are no programs running in the background and the brightness is set at 40% or below.
EDIT: Even on standby without use for hours the phone has NEVER gotten below 26 degrees celsius (78 fahrenheit) .
I'm hoping someone could share info on the heat of their devices/the normal range of heat that these kinds of devices should be putting out. It sounds interesting that this much heat can actually be created, more elaboration would be better though.
bumping for answers for op.
I noticed a dramatic difference in the temperature from my evo 4g. Some potential causes:
* high stock voyages (there is a great thread in the Dev section about uv kernels)
* when running modaco's brightness patch it got worse for me.
* since it happens with the screen off, it is probably not tht...

What's your ambient temperature?
Absolute temperature doesn't tell us much, what's useful is the delta between device temp and ambient temp.

The room temperature is air conditioned around 18 to 25 degrees celsius (64F to 77F). The phone should not be hitting above this range, especially on standby. It should not reach 40 degrees Celsius whilst texting/app surfing on 2G.
Same issue here.
My Nexus One's battery is at 24C (plugged in, not charging).
And by GNex's battery is at 37C (plugged in, charging)
Okay 37 is fine but 42 is not :/

also i noticed on galaxy nexus it get too hot around the camera on the back and the earpiece on the front.
noticed the problem mainly when in an area with weak reception. or while charging the phone even with good reception.
its something with the radioROM or hardware.
any suggestions??!!
normal
Its normal! 76F when not in use 90-101 in use 101-120 with charger and using . I called Samsung . My euro gs2, at&t gs2 and my skyrocket all have the same temps remember this is a very thin plastic phone with battery right there behind tiny plastic cover . Think of it like this dose ur computer get hot when u use it?? ? Have u ever even thought bout that? No cause ur not holding it in ur hand .
+1
This is a dual core phone, it is going to run hot because it's a dual core processor with no cooling other than dissipation. It's not a problem unless your phone is actually crashing because of it. I've seen mine get up to 46C during long periods of gaming/charging.
I expect the hardware has been developed to tolerate these temperatures or we'd see a lot more "my phone overheated and now it's a brick" posts or even "my phone exploded into flames" posts. Have only seen a couple of the former and none of the latter.
Running hot after root, rom and maybe 'incorrect charger'
So like others here my GSM version Galaxy Nexus phone is quite hot at the top right corner back and front, near the camera. Only when the screen is on. Battery drops very rapidly too.. like 1% every 30-45 seconds...
This heat is brand new. I recently rooted and romed the device after the recent ICS update cause signal loss when the screen was off. I tried AOKP, various kernals and have now returned to the original backup of android 4.0.2. The heat continues with the screen being on, through all of this. Doing nothing, wifi connected... just on. Screen off no issues. No apps are installed except stock. Default Kernal again.
I also noticed i plugged the phone in with my blackberry playbook charger at the same time as all of this. The specs on that are playbook charger output is 5V @ 1.8A..
I notice a few other people posting about this so want to know if this might be rom related somehow, or if perhaps ive done something to the hardware from the charger. I've tried a spare battery that was not used with the charger at all and the heat continues.
There was no heat at all like this before this last 24 hours so its not 'normal use'. Promise Hope someone has some possible suggestions to try
Mine is at 31 right now.. listening music and xda... if play games it goes to ~35 if I plug it in it gets hotter than 40...

How hot does your Battery get?

Hi,
You might laugh at this, but I have never owned a smart phone before. I got my Galaxy Nexus last Thursday and I took it for two trips this weekend, mounted on the dashboard. The trips were about a couple of hours each, and the weather was sunny with a temperature from 90 F to 97 F.
I use AndroSensor to measure the temperature of my battery. I found that my battery temperature was around 122 F most of the time, and once went up to 134 F. Is this OK or is there something wrong with my phone. Also the voltage of the phone dropped to 3.7 V as compared to 4.18 V when fully charged and cold.
I am just curious if there is something wrong with my phone. I would like to know what temperatures you guys see with the Galaxy Nexus.
Thank you,
O. O.
Depends my battery stays at 32 c when I work in a 55 f prep area. When I'm in a 82 f room it hits 60c with light usage. This is with trinity kernel. It manly depends on the temp of where you are

In a cool environment (low 70s F) my battery never reaches 120° F. At the moment, it's at 93°F, and I've been using it lightly for a while. Under very heavy usage I've see it reach 118, but more typically about 114. With moderate usage, I see 104 pretty often. After sitting overnight it's usually about mid-80s.
Being on a hot dashboard in direct sunlight on a hot day probably affected your battery temp quite a bit.
Cool Tool is pretty good for monitoring things like battery temp.

Thanks strumcat. There was direct sunlight on the phone since it was mounted on the dashboard, but still 134 F is ridiculous. Does anyone have any idea what he upper limit of the temperature of the battery is? This is a new phone so I would like to know if there is a problem right now before my 15 day trial period expires.
Thank you,

I reach 144°F when I play games and do heavy Facebook+browser Tasks.
Yesterday reached the temp of near shut down (12°F close). Be careful where u use your phone. Like the summer at Disney.

If it was on direct sunlight, 130-ish is not that bad. But make sure that you don't do that next time. That can really be a huge problem. Also you know how hot the CPU was? I find you have to look out for CPU temperature more than battery, because CPU gets really, REALLY hot for me.
My max. battery temperature is around 120F, while charging and browsing/socializing. But my CPU temperature goes beyond 60C easily with light use...

I'm really sorry, but I am yet to find that out. The only reason why I know this is because of SetCPU feature, which is underclocking when CPU temperature reaches certain heat.

Open Terminal Emulator and run cat /sys/devices/platform/omap/omap_temp_sensor.0/temperature. Divide by 1000 and you have temperature in Celsius.
Thank you guys for the information. I think this is all I need. As Dragn4rce mentioned the cut-off is 180F so its nice to know that I was much below that threshold.

[Q] note 8 getting warm?

Hi. I noticed that the left hand part of the screen of the Note 8 (about a third of the screen on the side where you have the menu button, all the way along the left bezel) gets slightly warm with an hour or so of heavy use. I thought it was just my palm warming that side of the device when I'm holding it, until I realized that the same thing happens even when I'm using it on landscape mode. 2/3 of the screen up to the right bezel stays cool.
Anyone else notice this on his device? Is this normal for the note 8 N5100?

I have installed Battery and System Tuner Free. The first one gives me battery temperature readings of anywhere from 31-33 degrees Celsius. System Tuner Free gives me readings of 42-51 degrees Celsius. The range happens when I'm using anywhere from 1 to 9 apps at a time.
All devices that are used heavily will really turn warm, that's normal hehe. So better dont use it that much. Let it rest for some time.
How about when you are playing hd games? In my case, Playing need for speed most wanted makes my note 8 hot too. will this damage my unit?

No. If the temperature is out of spec, the system will shut itself down.
Internal resistance in a computer + voltage = heat. And the heavier the usage, the more the heat. This is normal, folks. It would be very magical if the device did not generate heat.

ok thanks a lot for your reply
Yeah, I think playing the more graphics-intensive games really pushes my device to the limit. I switched to Android Tuner from System Tuner because it has a much cleaner UI and I *think* I understand more on it I also get readings of 70 degrees and 36 degrees for CPU and battery respectively while playing Iron Man 3 and Quadropus.
No shutdown so far so maybe that means the device can still take the heat. Thanks a lot for your replies!
Leardsdat and
It's totally normal, see both the CPU and the battery (and screen, if it's brightness is high) is warming your device. And in my understanding Android keeps it's applications on background running unless you kill them with an app or from application managing. So this means your device is processing many things at the same time and it will make it warm.

How hot is too hot (gt-i9192)

My gt-i9192 can get a bit hot. Reaching even 45 Celsius when I am outside using for example the maps app (needs gps, data and wifi (it claims it makes GPS more accurate and it seems to do)). or a game or browsing the web. Specially if the environment temperature is high (I consider 25º or so "high" for environment temperature). I am not sure if 45 is too much or if it is just okay fine. It does get uncomfortable and the temperature guard app defaults at 40º for the "too hot" warning.

Keeping GPS on does get hot, particularly if you are using a navigation app. Depending on the games, some times it can be also demanding. But if you also get 45 degrees on browsing, than something is wrong.
You sure if the app is reporting the correct temperature? 45º should be warm to hold in hand (a feel-able temperature).

Sure, I feel the hotness.
I used to get 45 degrees while browsing if the environment temperature is hot. It hasn't happened in a while, recently I moved to a custom kernel, so maybe that fixed it.
My i9190 has been getting really hot lately, and whenever it does the battery drains crazy fast (about 35%/hr). Strange thing is, the task manager shows no apps consuming CPU nor RAM.
I had a similar problem with my old S2 that started after I had had it for about 9 months. At the start of a day battery consumption wasn't bad, but if I used it for an extended period of time it would heat up, and battery consumption seemed to rise linearly with the amount of heat the phone was emitting. There were incidents where it drained to half from full in a matter of less than an hour.
I welcome. I have i9192 and at me temperature at the game on facebook also achieved 45 "C and I returned it to the shop. At other users of this phone what temperature is while looking the Internet through??Can the shop he will accept the warranty??
Ah, I did forget one thing, since I didn't stay on original ROM for long. For those that are on original Samsung ROM, I guess it normal, since the default CPU governor is set on 'performance' mode. Your CPU is running on the highest speed all the time, and most original ROM does not enter deep sleep.
JoeCastellon: If you are on the original ROM, it would be your problem of battery drain. Using a custom Kernel or ROM like vexorian would solve your problem.
groda: Same, if you are on original ROM, running any app even if it not games, it would raise the temperature at a very rapid rate.
I thank for the reply. When install root and to lower the clocking of the processor? by the way, the new ROM will lower the temperature?
My latest "[doh this got too hot]" experience was on Sunday, I was using c0bain's kernel which AFAIK has the "on demand" governor.
I am now trying SilviuMik's ROM, will test during a week and see if the hotness happens again.

For me a battery is overheating. I want install root and new kernel. I have a question. Which kernel will lower the temperature for me? As install new kernel could update whether I will be through wi fi??
The kernel itself will not magically lower the temperature. You will need to manually undervolt the cores to achieve that, which requires a custom kernel which supports undervolting.
Changing your kernel will prevent OTA updates, if that's what you're referring to with the update through WiFi
My cores are working now on the maximum. install the root can I lower the clocking of the processor this way?
It which kernel will be good for my i9192? What thread is it possible to find him in?
Yes with kernel and appropriate app you can adjust clock settings.
Not sure if 9192 has a custom kernel that supports this. Check the development subforums
Okay found one.
