Dice player has an option to continue video playback even when the app is running in the background
Slimrom has a modified Youtube in its gapps, allows the video (sound) to continue being played when screen off
You could also try "MX Player" Is a good one, and it has that option in settings (Continue the video play while screen is off). Hope it's useful.
I use Screen Standby for my Nexus 10 and it works pretty good.
Screen Standy
+1 for screen standby
Works like a charm, i especially like the hdmi autosensing and the autostarting any app feature.

Hi guys,
I am lokking for the video player app from Samsung Vibrant where I can look the screen during watching videos.
I haven't found any other player with this feather
Does anybody know the correct name of the app or can share it!?!
Thanks
Don't think anyone had successfully ported it yet

Get mVideoPlayer from the market.
It's free, plays 720p downloaded mkv's without converting, not a problem, and supports external (only tried .srt) and internal subtitles. It's fast too.
I am searching for the look screen option, because when you would like to watch a movie and hold your phone in your hands, you may push a button.
And I think at the moments its the only app that have this feature.
So maybe anyone can port it

You can lock the screen with the power button (default videoplayer).
Locks screen and softkeys.
When you use the power button by Samsung Galaxy S the phone switch to sleep mode!
Thats strange. Mine locks the screen. Lock symbol appears in one corner. Pressing powerbutton again unlocks the screen. No matter if video started with videoplayer or through gallery.
I'm currently running JM5 firmware. Same behavior with stock JF3.

same JM5, same behaviour here, no need for third party app. the mVideoPlayer with subtitle capability is interesting though...
ionutz6: I think it's faster than the stock one, and has some "library" functions like bookmarks, remembers the time when closing videos, and mark the ones viewed (great for TV Shows).
And did I say it's free?
can this player do variable speed playback ?

Works fine with .ass subtitles too. I can't get it to play mkv internal subtitles though, I've got to use mkvextract and stick the files in the folder myself. Still can't find a player which will deal with multiple audio tracks either . Pain in the bum - means I've got to use mkvextract to rip out video, subs plus the audio track I want, then merge the vid/aud and keep the subs separate.
my default video player app supports has the lock feature by pressing the power button
and mVideoplayer also have a "lock controls" feature under the "more" menu
Hey guys, just wondering what everyone is using for a video player? I tried vital player and v player and they both fc :/ any ideas for playing .avi on ics?

I use MX player
Ive had quite good results with both the ones you've listed definitely faster frame rate with 1080p avi's with vplayer..
MX Player has been really good for me, for videos that play without sound in the Gallery you can enable audio software decoding and software decoding works well for video too.

All these players dont fully stretch video image in the sides like the default player. You got full screen only in default player. In the other hand default player does not support str subtitles and also opes all videos with H/W decoder and as a result most videos lag....for example in MX Player you can choose S/W decoder and the video plays smooth like butter.
If you're willing to spend some money Dice Player works perfectly. It plays 720p mkvs fluidly and even supports embedded subtitles. It even hides the main buttons when it's in fullscreen for that 4.65 HD screen goodness : )
Theres a thread somewhere in here about it. There's also a demo version on the market:

I use mx video player and it stretches to full screen, even when skipping through the video it shows no bars or anything just pure video

How did you get it to stretch full screen?
The buttons are still there on full screen...

They are for me too. Diceplayer got rid of them but I cant get the full version now. Hopefully it will turn up somewhere.
Diceplayer is the only one that goes true full screen as of now.
MX Player still shows buttons in full screen.
I think these two are currently the best. Both are worth trying out as each has it's own strengths, find out which works better for your files/subtitles.
The full version of Diceplayer is back up

Pops up an error when trying to purchase.
'Your Order could not be processed. Please try again.' And the description also says it cannot currently be purchased :/
I've transferred a few 720p videos to my nexus, only to find the stock player doesn't seem to like their formats/file type. So I downloaded Mx video player app which is fine, other than its ability to remove menu buttons and actually use the full screen. As such its cropped and squashed on the screen.
So does anyone know of a way round it or possible any decent video software which has been optimised to use the nexus screen?
Thanks

MX player removes the buttons on my screen..
^^how..it doesn't play full for me
MX doesn't remove buttons for me, Diceplayer does.
Double checked it. Latest MX Player 1.4c installed (https://market.android.com/details?id=com.mxtech.videoplayer.ad) no update in the market available.
Does not remove the button bar.
They promised to fix it in next release.
Its been fixed

When I play a song video in youtube and press the "Home" button, the song STOPS playing.
Why?
I want the song to continue playing in the background.
Any suggestions? Please reply.
Its always done that cause youtube isnt a regular music player. Your phone is literally ending the session with the youtube app. The best you can hope for is waiting for the screen to time out and just stick it in your pocket after that lol. But yeah only music players (as far as i know in this situation) will continue to play in the background for you.
U can find a version of youtube that works this way... google is ur friend

Try the app stickit! It will allow you to play a song video on youtube or other videos on your device in the background or foreground. It actually makes floating screen you can adjust the size of so you can "multitask". Occasionaly hiccups when playing a video... but not bad overall.

MXplayer-----The dark scene is bad, it's too bright and shows a lot of black block
Stock player---The dark scene is good, but it can't show built in subtitle, and also no subtitle on/off?
Any other good video player to try?
Try Dice Player or a VLC nightly.
I always use BSPlayer - never a problem. I used to use MX Video Player but had a few minor problems that BSPlayer solved.
Edit
Archos player and codecs now available on Play Store (highly rated video player) and I am using that now. I keep BSPlayer installed as backup tho.

MX player always good. But Archos just released one called ArchosVideoPlayer. If anything, Archos has always been known for great video playback capabilities.
Dice player for me

I posted this in another thread but here is the bs player apk (ver.1.9.150), it's the older version that has Dolby support enabled as the newer version had to remove it for now. http://db.tt/WM51HEcl

VPlayer Pro.
bsplayer you either dont upgrade and use SW decoding or upgrade for HW decoding and lose dolby audio
(bs is my favorite because it supports windows filesharing and I can access my home NAS without using a third party app like DNLA streaming or cifs/smb file browsers)
MXPlayer works well
VLC nightlies work well
VPlayer isn't as good as any of the above IMHO but still decent.
Did DicePlayer finally get its dolby support back?
I use MX pro..I don't have any issues.

The best is MX Player with the dedicated plugin
Or you can try VLC Media Player
The blocking you are seeing is encoded in the video you are watching. Try using encodes with a higher bitrate.
The fact you see those blocks in the black background is testament to Nexus display's excellent reproduction of near black levels. Many other devices you don't see the blocks is likely as a symptom of their poor displays.

No it's not good to have those blocks, if you look at Sherlock Holmes movie 2 from 9:30 to 11:00, you will know the blocks are not part of the movie.

I figure out this problem. Mx player allows to change the bright, if I change to darker, those block will not seen. Bsplayer can't display my buildin subs.

I use gplayer myself. I used to use mobo player on my evo3d because it could save streaming videos and could be played in a floating window but when I tried getting mobo on my n7.2 it seemed like it was an older version full of bloatware so I tried gplayer. Now gplayer doesn't have a save as feature but it is a stand alone YouTube player. So if you click on a video link in tapatalk it will just launch a resizable floating video player so you can still read the forums and watch the video at the same damn time. BTW the portrait keyboard on this n7.2 is really comfortable. I can type a long response and not break a sweat. The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog.

The problem is iPhone and computer both can't see blocks. Do you mean nexus's display better than those? For watching movie, no blocks obviously better?

Basically computer LCD is better than cellphone's. that the reason for black blocks. iPhone doesn't have this problem, maybe it's screen is better.
