Screen problem only lupus v13 works - Xperia Play Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've been trying to switch from jellybean back to GB. But every time I flash another kernel no matter which one I get a blank screen with only the backlight when I turn on the phone. Not even the kernel image or boot animation show up just a backlight. I've tried every kernel I could possibly find as well as flashing stock ft for my r800x. The only kernel that works with the screen is lupus jb v13. The weird thing is lupus v8 doesn't eben work nor turbo kernel. Lupus jb v13 is the only one that does. I wsd thinking it was a hardware problem but not sure because lupus jb v13 works fine except for when I slide open game pad I have to shut screen off and on for image to show up. Its been like this for a couple days and I finally decided I need help . So if you have any suggestions please help me. Thank you for reading my really long desperate plead for help

Just an idea, is it any command in build.prop to disable autobrightness? So you can change rom before flashing.
Or if you know how to blindly flash a rom (positions in cwr, name folder on sd card "AAA" so it can be first in the list).
Or maybe program on pc that can take screenshots so you can somehow disable autobrightness...
But it's probably hardware fault...

Well its not auto brightness because that only activates in ROM not kernel

Anybody have an idea? I tried GB and ICS again and I got the same result a barely readable screen. If its a hardware problem what does it sound like? Flex cable maybe? I'm still confused on why it works with lupus job v13

Did Wedgess released any versions between v8 and v13?
In he's changelog, in v9, there is an "Undervolt LCD display" feature. Maybe, but not nececcery, a thing that is lighting up your display...
What other kernels did you tried? All of them? All versions?

I tried doomkernel v14, lupus v12 gb, turbo kernel, stock, full stock ftf. I'll try lupus v9 to v12 jellybean and see if they work. If they do then that might be the problem. Thanks for a suggestion I'm dying to get this fixed because my play is basically useless on jellybean

Did you tried CM kernels (besides doomlords, lupus and turbo kernels)?
I'm curious too why it works only on jb13.

Yeah, i saw your post in kernels thread.
I found link of how build kernel at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2149508
I wanted to learn to build kernel from source, but unfortunately all my attempts to setup linux on virtual machine has failed (and linux is needed to build kernel from source).
I understand your frustration, since all jb roms have touchpad lag, and kinda kill the purpose of having Xperia play.

And cm7 or cm9 kernel? So you can have gb or ics working on your phone.

I know what the problem is though its the backlight. Because i flashed lupus jb v8 and a rom aand it worked but you can barely see the screen. So i think its because the backlight wont turn on. On fxp cm10 and lupus lupus jb13 it works by itself though. Ahhhhh this is so frustrating. I was just about to test dixperia 3 too and now i cant. For now im going to go back to jellybean but i really wanna get this fixed but im starting to get conviced its a hardware problem. I think ill take my phone apart and check

-flash kernel, turn off phone, pull out battery, try to turn on after 10 minutes
-boot into (jb) rom, from flashtool, select "boot into fastboot via adb"
-flash kernel only when the Moon is in 30 degree angle between Sun and Earth lol
Sorry man, i am getting out of ideas

im going to try everything you suggested except for the last one lol. I think if none of those work i might just give up. But does anyone know if kernel affects backlight in any way because thats the problem. With other kernels the backlight is off so even highering brightness doesnt help. But with the other two kernels fxp and lupus v13 it works fine. When i flashed lupus jb v8 after fxp cm 10 kernel last time it worked. I tried the same thing again but without any results

[Q] Can I flash CM7 FXP025 on Doom Kernel?

Hi Guys,
Just getting a grip on this Xperia Play, fantastic handset.
I am on the new stock firmware v4 (xloud) and I have flashed doomlords V02-FIX kernel.. overclock etc seems to be working fine.
Could someone tell me if its ok to flash the CM7 FXP025 and if no good/don't like can I safely get back to the stock rom by recovering using CWM recovery backup?
Sorry if it sounds a bit noobish I am not the brightest bulb in the box
Thanks
CM7 will only work with the provided kernel within the CM7 posts. It will not work with doomlords kernel (i've tried) lol

It's because doomkernel is made from the Sony Ericcson kernel source code. This is totaly incompatible with the source used for the CM kernels. You have to understand that CM7 is an aosp build. Built from the ground up, they are unable and unwilling to use any proprietary code. Thats why bug hunting usually takes longer than stock roms

Boot stuck after flashing DoomKernel v05 / Se TWeaked 1.0

Hello everyone.
Annoyed from CM7´s eating my battery i was happy to see the release of SE TWEAKED 1.0.
I just flashed my Arc to doomkernel v05 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=20335549#post20335549 and Se Tweaked 1.0 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1278758 , CWM works fine, also it says "Installation complete", but after reboot doomkernel logo goes away, and screen goes black with backlight.
So i thought it will take some time "give the rom some time to boot up after the logo goes away".
But the phone stuck in that order for hours.
-redownloaded rom and new install
-another sd card and new install
dont fixed it at all.

Try this one.....

Ah well its still doing the same -.-
Try the stock kernel... And then go back to doomkernel... Mine did not flash the new doomkernel over the old one when i went from freexperia to Xperia mod.. Which is great btw
So try a totally different kernel and then flash doomkernel again

I think you flashed SE TWEAKED directly on CM7.
You must first switch back to the stock rom i.e, .42 firmware.
Try flashing .42 firmware and then flash the DooMKernel followed by SE TWEAKED.

How do I match kernel to ROM?

This is one of those n00b questions that probably seems obvious but isn't, at least for me.
One can safely assume a kernel that says it is for CM7 or CM9 will work with ROMs with those names. But what about ROMs based on stock, like DarkForest 3.0.5 or the UK ROM? It's not quite as clear to me and I didn't see that info in the ROMs where I would expect it to be.

DoomLord or Darkforest (stock based, it's a few pages back in dev forum) or stock (flash via ftf) for stock based (darkforest 3/cola/IT-Rom/gbtweaked/r800x UK). Kernel associated with rom for others.

So ROMS should indicate whether they are based on Stock or not, and they should indicate the kernal, shouldn't they?
Also, I think one can also say, if you want to be on the bleeding edge of technology, go with CM9 or maybe CM7. If you want to use your Play to play videos, games that use video cutscenes, etc, stick with a Stock-based ROM. (At this point in development, anyway.)
And, Pax, Am I also correct in assuming when FXP puts up a new build, as they just did, I will want to hold off until Chevyowner updates his link, or is there a way for me to keep the CDMA functionality using other builds?
BTW - CM9 is awesome!
If I ever get around to creating an update.zip, we might have a flashable porting zip for CDMA on CM9

That would be sweet!
The Darkforest kernel links are all outdated so that is a no-go. I installed DoomLord's kernel without a problem, but I can't get into recovery on it, tried back button, volume down, volume up, home, search... nothing.
Just flashed back to stock with the ftf file and installed the doomkernel again - boots ok into Stock now, so that's something. However, I understand that this kernel is harder on the battery use than Keiran's.
The learning continues! Now to figure out how to get recovery on it and how to get in it!.

1) Create the file structure and fill it with the files you want to use.
2) Write the updater script.
3) sign it with testsign.jar.
4) Flash it.
That's how you basically create an update.zip. The really boney part is the updater script, in which you have to figure out the correct permissions, symlinks and other stuff, and/or run the scripts you want to have working.

I recently flashed Doomkernel v11 on my stock rom then flashed the wifi modules and everything is fine. When Doomkernel logo appears on boot, that is the time the LED turns to blue and I just pressed "back" key on my xplay and it boot into Doomkernel's boot manager. However, I also installed CWM 5.0.2.7 for Xperia phones just to be sure. Lastly, it really is a bit of hard battery in the battery but it is fast and stable. Btw, I am using T.E.A.M. rom as of now and it is also fast and stable.

Completely understandable, this thread started as a R800x focused one, but with Logseman no longer updating the Guide/Rollup thread, we do need a new on focused on matching kernels with Roms...
Pax
Hi, I have a few noob questions as well:
1. Does a custom ROM like CM7 or Lite'ning have their own kernel ? When I flash them, the kernel I have now (CF-ROOT) gets replaced ?
2. How do I know to match a kernel to a ROM ?

And thus we return to the original question!
I have since found that the best way to know which kernel to use with a ROM is to read through the thread for the ROM you are interested in. If a ROM is based on stock, then look for kernels based on stock, etc.
Also some ROMs package a kernel to be used with them in the zip file. It's always a good choice when you want to try a ROM and you aren't sure what kernel to use.

One of the best roms i have used so far and ive tried cyanogenmod 9.1.0, NXT Revolution, Darkforest etc. Only problem i seem to be having is upon unlocking the home screen i get. "Xperia Home is not responding. Would you like to close it?" after i click ok to close it boots in but can be a lil frustrating at times. wondering if anyone else has had this issue. Also i see in these posts the kernel mentioned, i use Doomkernel V3 works great for me

Kernel 2in1 [ICS/GB]

Hey guyz, is there any kernel which works for both ics and gb.
There was a lupus version long time ago, but I don't remember the version. If any body know please post here.
Thanks
If I remember correctly, newest ICS Lupus (v15 or v16) can boot both ICS and GB.

If you can confirm? Please, TIA
I don't have the phone at hand right now, being used as temporary backup phone by a relative.
Just try it yourself. You can't really mess up anything. ICS boots definitely on that kernel, GB should, but if it doesn't, you can just flash another kernel/ROM or even stock firmware.

The thing is m not having PC availability, I have to request to my faculty for system access but only for 5-10 mins. So I can't test in that time, cause I can't stay to ics cause of its performance for long time. otherwise I wouldn't have posted this thread if I had PC.

Seems to be lupus v14. In the sticky thread for roms/root/kernels/mods etc. in arc development section (post 3, gb kernels) it's mentioned. I looked into lupus thread and in the changelog for older releases you see v14 that should boot up on ics, cm9 and gb. But I didn't test it myself
Cheers!
Lupus is ics+gb kernel (latest version) u can use both of the firmware and its based roms with this kernel.[emoji3]
So i confirm here that lupus is two in one kernel. Thanks for your response guys.
