Decrease in mobile data quality? - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S 4

Hello I live in Miami Florida I just came from a note 2 and prior to that I had an s3.. Both phones while on the HSPA plus APN did very well with speeds. The s4 does pretty well with speeds but I do notice that the data will get stuck sometimes and you see the arrows working as if they are transferring data but in reality its stuck most of the time I have to turn on airplane mode and then turn it off to get my data working again. This happens on any ROM and I never had this problem before this phone. I know that they are working on towers but even on the HSPA plus APN I'm having issues which I never have many issues on this network with other phones. Even on the LTE APN I noticed that a lot of times when switching from LTE to 4G I get so call drops or I get the internet stuck and have to turn on airplane mode even togglingmobile data on and off doesn't help.. Has anyone else experienced this problem I'm wondering if we were going back to the first modem on the first firmware will maybe help? Or is it just them working on the towers? If anyone has a good solution to this please let me know

If you can live without LTE for now, go into Settings -> Connections -> More networks -> Mobile networks -> Network Mode -> select GSM/WCMDA (auto connect)
I've had issues around here where the modem REALLLLY wants to grab LTE, but can't, and gets kind of stuck. But, HSPA+ is also pretty solid around here.

Help on fixing cell standby battery drain?

Hey yall, I've got a bit of a problem with cell standby and I know it's a reception issue, hopefully you guys can help me.
You see, I live in one of the outermost neighborhoods in Jerusalem in a big building made out of thick bricks and cement...as one could imagine, reception is really bad.
My problem stems from the fact that the only way I can get 3G service is by sticking my phone right at the window and forcing it to 3G by hitting WCDMA Only in the *#*#4636#*#* menu. then I just tether to my laptop and everything is all good. After I take it off the windowsill, once it is more than a foot away, I lose all service. I forget to put it back to WCDMA preffered and it just looks for 3G all day in my pocket and I get a battery drain.
anyway I guess my question is this... is there a program or setting I can use to force it to 3g when it knows there is a 3G connection possible? WCDMA Preferred doesn't work because the EDGE network overpowers the 3G network and it would never connect unless I completely disable EDGE.
TL;DR Is there a way to make the radio default to EDGE when it is completly impossible to find any trace of 3G?
Menu > Settings > Wireless & networks > Mobile Networks > Use only 2G networks
That will force your phone to use only EDGE and will put less drain on your battery when it comes to cell network.
Personally, I would move out of jeruselum and go to a place that pumps out 4g. Or at least theoretical 4g. (Hspa+)

I always do that when I don't need a fast data connection, I have a widget to switch back quick when I need to do some surfing or tethering

[Q] Note 2 not auto switching to 4G?

Hi guys, I'm plenty familiar with the Note II having had mine since October release. I'm having an issue where I will be in a solid 4G coverage area (at my home) and my phone will stay in 2G mode.
There is a problem with either the tower or the phone, I'm leaning toward tower because my wife has my old Sensation 4G which is also staying on 2G. Have any of you encountered/noticed that your phone stays in 2G even though you are in a 4G coverage area? For me either on the Sensation or Note II, I just pick WCDMA, 4G pops in and works great. The only problem is that I have to remember to put it back on auto when I leave the area. I looked up and attempted the cell codes for making the phone prefer 4G, but without success there. Also my phone picks up 4G automatically when I'm at work, so again leaning toward tower (but how and why the tower can control this I have no idea).
I also noticed some threads claiming wifi calling would detect wireless networks nearby and disable 4G. I'm leaning towards BS on that because 1. my wi-fi is almost always turned off (true unlimited 4G plan), and 2. when I disable wifi calling all together it still exhibits the same behavior.
I'm running out of ideas - any help is appreciated!

In settings>more settings>mobile networks>network mode:
You should ALWAYS be set to GSM/WCDMA (Auto mode)
This will automatically get you the best data signal available at your location. If you only get 2G in some locations, that's normal. You can try calling TMO support and have them check your address to see if you SHOULD have 4G at that location. If you really want to try to see what is going on, install an app called Open Signal Maps form the Play store. Among other useful things, it will geolocate the towers you are connected to complete with distance and mapped street address.
Where I live I only ever get 2 or 3 bars of 2G data. I use the TMO wifi calling app for all my calls and texting. This is only way I can get reliable service at home.

Thanks for replying vouty. When I switch from auto mode to WCDMA I have 4 full bars. That's the funny part. Speedtest is giving me around 12Mbps down 3 up on average (I live right by the tower - like .5 mile), so there is for sure something strange happening. If I keep wifi on it really isn't an issue, but I prefer to not mess with wifi and just keep it in 4G while at home, but as frustrating as this problem is, the phone refuses to switch from 2G on it's own. Once I toggle from AUTO to WCDMA, and then back to auto - it will stay on 4G. It's almost as if I am waking it up and causing the phone to re-detect the signal.

Cool app, very useful, appears I am on 3g at home. Turning off wifi to see if it changes to edge while using data.

data shuts off randomly and cant turn on

hey guys,
got a i317m from canada with the stock bell rom with root. everyone week or two, i'll notice im not getting any data (messages and other data apps wont work). the lte symbol is there, but the little arrows for upstream and downstream are clear (usually orange or blue when working).
i tried rebooting, wifi on/off, airplane on/off and still the same. i confirmed lte is selected and the apn is selected and duse data is selected. it seems to start working when i start messing with the roaming options (havent confirmed this completely as i am still trying to narrow it down).
one thing i just noticed is that when it starts working, its in hspa mode, not lte
any suggestions?
I have the opposite issue in Michigan. If I lose LTE I will lose hsdpa even though the icon shows 4G. I can see the data curves moving up and down but no data. Sometimes jumping in and out of airplane mode fixes it. Also I see the 4G Hsdpa icon and the WiFi icon active at the same time even though I'm using WiFi. Very annoying.

gs3 loses data when traveling

Hey everyone I'm using the AT&T gs3 with task650's version of AOKP flashed onto it and it is the latest build. So anyway here's my problem, I live in Long Island NY and I often travel to Manhattan. Whenever I go to Manhattan or anywhere around there my phone doesn't get data but I see that i have 5 bars of connection and the wifi also works when I visit my friends house. I know that the areas I go definitely are getting good data connection because it is in the heart of the city. If anyone knows a fix for this I would greatly appreciate it, And sorry if someone posted a fix to this already but I couldn't find one myself. Thanks.
Hold your data toggle and in the settings menu that pops up, enable data roaming and reboot. If ghat doesn't work enable all networks in the data roaming menu and reboot again.

I had a similar issue recently. My problem was I went from 3g to 4g but forgot to select the correct APN. Make sure under settings>More>Mobile Networks>Access Point Names that LTE is selected. That solved the issue for me.

[Q] Bell Canada i747m losing connection

hey gang i'm running the latest aokp task650 build on my S3 I747m. Everything works awesome, except i occasionally lose my data connection. I'll notice my connection status bars are gray, and typically a reboot will fix it. I'm sure going into airplane mode and back out from that would re-establish the connection too.
my APN is set correctly, i compared it to a friends nexus which is not rooted.
Right now i'm set as pda.bell.ca
I've flashed the latest bell modem file (that i'm aware of).
Anyone have any suggestions? i'm pretty new to all of this.. not sure what to do to troubleshoot.

I've been having problems lately when I have poor 4G (LTE) signal. My phone would rather hang around on the LTE network with little to no signal before it switches over to 3G. It's been doing this for a while on the Rogers network for me. I can see when I check the battery stats just how much time is spent without signal which is a lot. At work I get full bars 3G when at my desk but very poor 4G. The only thing causing me to loose signal is the poor transition back and forth between the two networks. Changing modems has absolutely no affect on this matter and I've put the APN's and network modes through the ringer with no change either. I've tried it all and nothing improved it. When I walk outside I immediately hit full bars 4G. Just when I'm inside my work and at home, I get poor lingering 4G. I wish the thresholds for when it switches over were better. I usually just turn off LTE all together which sucks but oh well.
I don't think we are the only people with this either. I've read grumblings about others noticing the same thing.
If curious, I'm running the latest CM10.1 nightly with Ktoonsez kernel on the Rogers network in Ottawa.
Interesting, that could very well cooincide with what i'm seeing. I tend to bounce from 4G to H+ or 3G, i wonder if it's trying to hang onto 4G.
Is there a way to force it to stay on 3G? that might be a good test
I was getting the same issue.
I did a factory reset and reinstalled my ROM plus GAPPs and the issue resolved itself.
I am using the latest modern right now and not my bell one. I think it's from a south American carrier, but bit 100% sure of the top of my head. But it is in the current modern thread
