[Q] Will PagePlus Flash be ruined by flashing ROM? - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S III

Hello all. Been a computer geek for 25+ years, and an android geek for a little over a year. I have done numerous flashes on Continuum, Fascinate, Nexus, and various other phones. I cannot seem to get a "clear and defined" answer on this question:
I have a TOTAL nandroid backup via ClockworkMod Recovery v6.0.1.2
I have a TOTAL system & app backup via Titanium Backup Pro 6.0.1
I am rooted with Chainfire's SuperSU v1.34
Phone
Sprint Samsung Galaxy S3 SPH-L710
Android Version:
4.1.2
Baseband Version:
L710VPBMD4
Kernel Version:
3.0.31-1130792
Build Number:
JZO54K.L710VPBMD4
Hardware Version:
L710.14
I did ALL the OTA updates from 4.0.1 to 4.1.2 prior to PagePlus flash. Had phone flashed to PagePlus with 100% working 3G, text, talk, and MMS. IF I flash a custom ROM (ie: CyanogenMod Nightly build, MOAR, etc...) will it render my PagePlus inoperable or require reflashing to PagePlus with every custom ROM flash? At $50.00 per flash that can get expensive. IF it DOES screw up the PagePlus flashing, can I just do either of the previously mentioned backups, and have my PagePlus flash settings magically re-appear? Or will it require a visit to my local PagePlus retailer for another flashing? My previous phones didnt require "flashing to PagePlus" since they were verizon phones and can be updated by simply dialing *228 or *22890.

Short answer: No
You don't lose your phone number when flashing roms, right?
APN settings may need to be modified manually though for MMS, etc

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I knew you didnt lose your number or carrier settings when you flash a custom rom to a verizon based 3g phone (not sure about verizon 4g LTE phones tho), since PagePlus uses verizon towers, and to update roaming capabilities, and PRL is easily accomplished by the *228 or *22890. BUT when using a Sprint based 4g phone, if you flash a new rom, or go backwards to an older oem rom, I was under the impression that EVERYTHING goes back to the default Sprint settings, and that the PagePlus side of things is forever gone. But noone can give me a definitive YES or NO on this, and at $50 a pop for mistakes can get expensive quickly
I have flashed the following Verizon phones with with "multiple" OEM & Custom ROMS with NO problems: Continuum SCH-I400, Fascinate SCH-I500, Droid X, HTC Incredible, HTC Vogue Touch (installed android instead of win 6.x), Verizon Nexus SCH-I515 . None of these required anything other than OTA programming to work 100% with Page Plus (except the Nexus which I could NEVER get on PagePlus no matter how hard we tried).

Page Plus Mystery Solved?
First off..... sorry for posting in the "general" area with a question. I'll try to be more careful in the future......
Second.... Answer to my own question, and for anyone else in the "not knowing".
I bit the bullet yesterday and flashed 3 custom roms. Cyanogenmod, Miui, and MiBox, and then flashed back to my nandroid oem 4.1.2 JB I had 100% working Talk, Text, and MMS on ALL 3 roms, as well as the oem.
So, the answer to my question, YES, you can flash custom roms without losing PagePlus flash. I did NOT do an Odin flash, but I did do a factory reset, and still had all my settings intact.
Thanks to all the helpful people who gave opinions/pointers. Your work with the devices is GREATLY appreciated!!!! Keep up the good work.

I'm hoping you can help me with my similar question. I have a used Verizon Galaxy Nexus (SCH-I515) that I successfully programmed to use Page Plus. (I have no idea what I actually did, but I was able to follow the instructions I found online with no problems.) It's currently running JB 4.2.2 and Paranoid Android 3.6, and I'd like to get JB 4.3 on it.
I don't really understand flashing and all that (for instance, what ODIN is or what the ramifications of different operations are), and I can't seem to get an answer to my question.
Ideally, I'd like to get JB 4.3 on it (either stock/rooted or using one of the stable ROMs out there (CM 10?)), AND I'm hoping I don't have to reconfigure all the settings I've spent the last two weeks setting up.
Any insight? Thanks!

[Q] Newbie telus SGS2X owner please help.

Well after a few hours of searching these forums I have learned allot. I am new to android I switched from a blackberry. Now as any eager new phone owner would do I jumped in and rooted my telus galaxy s2x the first day i had it without doing anywhere near enough research. I then had to leave home for work for a long time and decided that I should return my phone to bone stock and start fresh with all the things i had learned. I have scoured these forums and the internet looking for the stock telus rom and kernal. I found links to both but so far have been unable to download them. Dead links? i have odin and have read the guides but without the software i am stuck. So i decided to register and post. now i just hope that someone will take pitty on me and my undeniably mis guided android antics. my current phone info is:
Model number: SGH-T989D
Android version: 2.3.5
Baseband version: T989DTLKJ3
Kernel version: 2.6.35.11
Build number GINGERBREAD.TLKJ3
Now as far as i know I only rooted the phone trying to remove the telus junk and useing LBE privacy gaurd for permissions. No ROM or Kernel tweaking. I am currently running Avast security to but am haveing doubts as to its usefullness. Hope that someone can point me in the right direction and thanks for your time!
The thing with the security, is that its rather hard to have a virus on Linux due to the nature of the system.
Without Root access, there is no access to system files.
I do not run Avast, and have yet to run into issues. Just know what you are installing and what you are granting root access.
First of all, you don't need to go back to stock rom and re-root again if you are willing to use a custom rom. Because, rooting related files resides under specific to your /system and /data directory which are already replaced when you install a custom rom and do a factory reset.
Moroever, if you go back to stock by restoring an original nandroid backup you will most probably like to loose CWM recovery. You probably wouldn't want to double flash CWM if you are going to root your phone again.
What I can recommend you is,
1) After you backup your stuff, do a wipe data/factory reset from CWM. That will allow you start fresh
2) Then, based on what you want to do:
a) If you want to install a custom rom:
Look for the dev forum and choose whatever you want. I am currently using Raverx3x BLACKEDITION ICS and it is awesome.
b) If you want to stick with original rom with root access:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1356739
Let me know if I couldn't answer your question.
Thanks
So i did find the stock rom and wiped all data and did a clockwork wipe as well rerooted the phone. So now i am bone stock. Again thank you for all the help. I am going to go with a custom ROM and from the reading i have done they all seem fairly good. Now I am just curious about custom ROM's and how well they work with lets say google play apps as well as some of the others you can get such as LBE. I dunno why but my phone when plugged into the comp wont start the auto play for usb storage and wont show up in the computer tab? weird. unless i run kies or start odin. then the auto play pops and i can see the usb. then windows tells me there is corrupt data on my external usb and if i scan it it closes all the usb stuff and seems to reset itself? i dunno i think that is a comp issue not so much phone. I guess my biggest issue is compatibilty with apps and custom ROM's and the like. Also if I flash a custom rom will that take care of the insane amount of telus and google crap. I dont really need most of what the phone came with but i am leary of deleting apps and system tools that are on the phone. I dunno totally new to android and in quite over my head. more reading i do more questions i have haha.
Idk if that was a phone app thing...
But for future, can you break up those huge paragraphs? Its hard to absorb all that information.
Anyways, I've never had an issue with computer connectivity... Might want to reboot the computer? That's a start at least

I will again suggest ravers rc8 ics rom. I havent seen any issues other than missing wifi calling. No bloatware at all. Rare FCs...
Btw I amnot sure 989-d is also supported by that rom, but worth trying definitely

What modem are you using ? the original T989D's is KJ8 I think... ?
I was using it also but only up to RC6 until I switched to Darkside.. it has a t989 kernel but unfortunately required an ICS modem. After I flashed the Tmobile modem, I realized that I no longer have 4g. Its a price I am willing to pay for now.
EDIT: Turns out the modem is fine - only a bug in the ROM that does not display the 4G icon.

I currently have the basic stock ROM unlocked on Koodo so I'd prefer to have a stable wireless signal especially with the tethering hot spot... I think my phone has the KJ3 but you guys have KJ8 modem?
Model number: SGH-T989D
Android version: 2.3.5
Baseband version: T989DTLKJ3
Kernel version: 2.6.35.11
Build number GINGERBREAD.TLKJ3
(pure stock?)
How is the GPS in the Ravers ICS ROM? I basically need a functional GPS and mobile access point (tethering) to work amongst something stable while not being crippled.
I have flashed my old Captivate to the Cognition 4.1 ROM but am definitely a noob to my new SGS2 T989D which is quite a pleasant upgrade

[Q] Update stock Sprint GNEX to 4.2.1 from 4.1.1 keeping root

So been while since I've done much rom flashing. Had an EVO for 2+ years and tried lots of ROMS, but then got the sprint GNEX because I just wanted vanilla android without having to mess with ROMS as much. As such, I'm just running stock 4.1.1, with it rooted for a few apps and wifi tethering which I flashed after rooting. Looking to update to the new stock Sprint 4.2.1 firmware, keeping root and wifi tethering. Back on the EVO, every time there was a new firmare update, someone would post a "stock rooted" ROM (not that I used them), that didn't have anything done to it, but can't seem to find that with the latest Sprint GNEX update, only one that seems to come close has been fiddled with, deodexed, causing some issues. I'm also not used to flashing without my data being on a removable SD card. So I'm wondering, is there a way to just flash a rooted version of the Sprint firmware, keeping my data and wifi tethering (or by just flashing a new 4.2.1 wifi tethering patch), or can I use OTA rootkeeper, flash the OTA update, and restore root? I've got latest TWRP recovery btw, which it seems I would have to change back to stock recovery to flash the OTA update correct? Thanks for any direction anyone can provide
First off, im not sure about wifi tethering, but it is an option on gsm android settings. I would use OTA rootkeeper, but you need the stock recovery first to accept the ota. Did you check this thread? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1419170

Thanks so much for pointing me in the right direction. Swear I tried to search other threads before asking but somehow missed that one, looks like it should tell me what I need. Think I was looking too much in the development forum for a full ROM to flash, and missed that thread in the general forum about just applying the update. Thanks again!!

update/unroot phone?

I have a galaxy s3 from sprint which I rooted many months ago and is currently running android 4.04, It is constantly asking me to update however every time I do it always fails. I've looked around the forums and from what I learned I believe that the only way to update is to unroot and update or to install a rom with jelly bean. I experimented with a few roms including CM10, AOKP and liquid smooth but all of these had problems with sending text messages where long messages would not send or even short messages were split into multiple messages. So unless anyone knows a fix to this I prefer to stick to the stock rom for now at least.
That being said I would like to update my phone to jelly bean. Does anyone know a way for me to do this? If unrooting is the only way does anyone know how I can unroot my phone? All of the post I've ran into are either old(don't trust really old post as methods tend to change as time pases) or don't give enough information aside from "install original firmware". If anyone could help that would be greatly appreciated. I have a mac computer so any methods that could be used with a mac would make things easier. Otherwise I could always run windows with bootcamp so not a big problem.
If it helps I rooted my phone using Odin and currently have CWM, its a sprint galaxy s3 running 4.04
Liquid smooth doesn't have that problem anymore

In order to OTA update the phone you need to be on a stock rom with all the stock apps installed and have a the stock recovery installed. (not CWM).
You could try to just reflash the stock recovery (which is what I did.) You could also just flash the current stock rom in Odin, which may or may not cause you to lose data. Dig around for all the roms and the stock recovery in the development forum.
Two things:
1. Please search. This has been asked (insert large number here) times
2. Head over to freezas thread and flash the MB1 firmware update. Then find a rom that is updated to either MA4 and up (including MB1) and flash it. I would recommended The Peoples ROM or MOAR (Mother of All Roms) if you wanna stay on a nice stock rooted rom
But thats it and you're done. Fully updated to JB

You don't even need to flash all the firmware, could just flash a rooted deodexed or odexed mb1 rom and modem if you like, but it's not necessary.

How to Update Android on Unlocked AT&T S3 I747 for MetroPCS/TMobile

Hey guys so I decide to get the SGH-147 AT&T S3 off of ebay for MetroPCS which enabled me to get a 2 year squaretrade warranty. After looking back at it now, I feel it might have been a bad idea since Metro has a MIR 349.99 deal for their S3 version which would mean easier android update since it would be on Metro servers if I'm not mistaken. Anyway I can't return the ebay phone now unless there is some software or hardware problems within 30 days
So my problem
I am stuck on 4.1.1 on Kies and when I check for update, because the phone is based on AT&T servers, it won't work since I'm on Metro. I wanted to see if there is anyway for me to update my phone to 4.3 which is the current version. Although, I've heard some people have 4.3 problems?
If that's not advisable, could y'all tell me how I could atleast get to Android 4.1.2? Also is there a 4.4 update in the works?
I just got the phone today and would like to be running on something better than 4.1.1
should I flash the AT&T phone to a MetroPCS ROM lol, if any of those are actually available, or if I were to flash, should I flash it to Tmobile?
First off, if its I747, you MUST flash only those Roms. No others. Now, that's indeed a nice phone with LTE Antenna.
You really heard correct. The 4.3 upgrade from the carrier (ATT for you) /Samsung has a lot of issues. I wouldn't do it for any reason. Particularly on T-Mo network, you will have severe signal issues as reported by others. In addition, it now flashes an EFuse onto your phone along with locked bootloader and other scary stuff.I really would not do it.
Lastly, XDA is organized by devices. So even though you are a T-Mo/Metro PCS customer, you will have to post on AT&T SGS3 forum over there.
Speaking of Rom update, Please visit Root66 Thread for this device. You will find Rooted version of your Current Rom. Dunno why but he does not have 4.2.x for you. Please do your research someone else must have posted it.
Now speaking to 4.3, yes there is a way to get 4.3 on your phone without the issues I mentioned above. But first you will have to flash a Custom recovery such as CWM or TWRP with the help of ODIN on your phone. Again do your research well. Once those are in place, take a look at this thread. It will provide 4.3 experience without ANY concerns or issues. Read it carefully and then read some more. Good Luck.

THANK YOU! Looks like I got a lot of phone work to do over the weekend. SO do you think it was good/should I stick with this AT&T S3 or should I try to sell it for a discount and buy a Metro PCS S3? The ebay buyer won't take my phone back unless there is a hardware or software problem inherent to phone...unless I fake one ?
If it was me, I'd keep the phone. Metro's S3 does not have LTE Antenna. You'd have been stuck at lower speeds.

Metro's s3 does have lte
As for the OP you can flash at&t or T-Mobile ROMs it really doesn't matter because they are backwards compatible (I have done it) and you can flash 4.3 ROMs if you don't want to take the official 4.3 update which you can easily do with Odin without the need for kies or ota.. Now, I suggest the first thing you do is flash a custom recovery and then experiment with 4.3 ROMs, if you keep having problems flash 4.1.2 roms.. There are some things you need to do though to get 4.3 up and running so I suggest you read up on it first. Good luck my friend!

Why can't you update PRL and profile in Lineage and other customs - and can we fix it

So as I've looked into it, it appears that nothing has changed here in the 2-3 years since I last explored this issue. I'm talking about the fact that you can't successfully update PRL and profile on CDMA carriers in LOS and AOSP ROMS. The usual behavior if you even have the option in the UX is that you get a force close. I'd love to understand why this hasn't been addressed.. It's a huge reason someone would stay on stock over AOSP/LOS. I saw someone suggesting a Nexus 5 dev had some success using a couple of APKs including OmaDmclient.apk, and a few threads here and on Reddit talking about how it must've been broken by an AOSP contributor, but in any event it still doesn't work. Isn't this something that the LOS team could fix if they wanted to?
The issue with CDMA is that most of the stuff isn't open source. This is why the aosp source code is targeted to GSM. So I sought this will get fixed any time soon.
Same problem... I think
My neighborhood has excellent Sprint 4G LTE coverage and it's much faster than T-Mobile. I happen to use Ting (which allows you to choose between T-Mobile GSM and Sprint CDMA, although to switch from one to the other costs $20). GSM isn't really an option for me.
Anyway, I used to have this problem with my LG Volt LS740. I could work around it by forcing a PRL and profile update on stock and then flashing to Cyanogenmod.
That phone finally bit the dust. I have now inherited my wife's Moto G 2015 (osprey) XT1548. Really nice phone.... but the issue is, the latest stock I can find is Android 6.0. I can activate the phone and get great 4G LTE on stock, but to flash to Lineage OS 14.1 (or AOSP) I have to wipe the device. I simply can't get it to pick up the 4G LTE service on the custom ROM's (tried both). This is a real problem.
As I understand it (admittedly from reading Wikipedia), the PRL contains an "acquisition table" that prescribes the frequencies/modes that the device will communicate on... so I think that's probably my issue. After doing the prescribed wipes in the ROM installation documentation, flashing the ROM, and booting the device, I think I've lost the PRL somewhere in that process.
Is there some way to retrieve the PRL while the device is on stock and put it back when flashing custom? If the PRL is indeed stored on the R-UIM, should I just remove the R-UIM during the first boot? Maybe I'm wrong and the problem isn't really the PRL.
Any thoughts? Please don't tell me to switch to GSM. The GSM coverage here is just plain bad from both carriers who offer it in my neck of the woods.
I have this same exact question. Ting, N910P note 4 that was originally Sprint, and days-old Lineage 16 / Andorid 9.0 . The latest stock rom is 6.0.1, and works fine. Lineage 16 works 99% fine and I'd really rather use that. But LTE doesn't work. If I force it to use 3G only, it actually all works. data, voice, text, bluetooth, gps… and being Lineage, I don't have to try to surgically remove all the spyware and other crapware without breaking it. It's just not in there in the first place. I'd really rather use that.
I would be fine having to extract things from the stock rom and edit files or whatever if it were at least just known what needed to be done. I'm fine with the fact that Lineage nor anyone else can actually include and redistribute any carrier proprietary stuff.
it should be possible
Has anyone figured this out?
I too have devices on ting, fantastically built devices that run amazingly thanks to a solid construction, the support of many many developers who are craft some of the best ROMs for any device I've ever seen, considering the limited specs of the XT1031s. Fortunately/adequately enough though, they only run on 3G Sprint, Boost originally, moved to Ting for their great rates for FreedomPop customers when they bought them out.
Anyway, currently to get a device on ting, I have to flash the latest 5.1 official stock Boost Mobile Rom with the latest radio baseband and firmware and such. A process thats pretty involved. I'm hoping that I can backup the stock image using TWRP, as when I went through the process of reloading the official image through the individual files via mfastboot, I skipped the logo and recovery files, and since I was able to retain my custom logos for boot and bootloaderunlocked screens, and the recovery, I'm hoping to be able to make an image of the stock ROM, which if at all possible, I'm going to do my best to make as bare bones as possible. May start with flashing the bloatware removed version of stock thats available, then going through and removing basically every app on the phone with the exception of settings and anything to do with phone, phone/carrier services, sim toolkit, etc, so I can have the smallest image possible that could maybe be restored everytime/anytime that I want to update the PRL or Profile. Which it looks like theres a new version of each released at a minimum every 3 months, as I just activated another device this way and there was only an incremental update of the last digit. If this works, great. If it doesn't then I hope that theres an answer to the question in the initial post of this thread;
Is there a way to update the CDMA PRL and Profile on a device that is running a custom ROM? If so, is it something the ROM needs to specifically support or is it something that is possible to do with a bundle of apks? Like sim toolkit and the like?
If its ROM related, are there, or would it be possible to take the necessary components from the stock files and install them in Xposed or Magisk? Or perhaps the buttons in the settings panel of the stock rom simply executes a series of commands that can be executed within a terminal CLI on the custom ROM? I assume that since the custom ROM clearly has access to the 3G radio since I can make and recieve calls, I have data, and text messaging (haven't tried MMS, but I assume it works) so why couldn't it do one more thing and initiate the PRL update?
I assume that even the stock rom doesn't ever touch the PRL or Profile, seeing as they remain even after a user data wipe, and are available for the radio to continue to use with custom roms, which means that the radio chip has to be the one storing the PRL Profile, so I bet that the radio also directly downloads those files from the carrier when asked to do so, and the stock rom must only come into play for the base logicstics of it all such as radio-"is this prl/profile a newer version than the one that i have now?" and phone-"yes, download new, purge old, flash new, tell me when done and leave me alone" Since the radio doesn't have its own processor for those sorts of things perhaps? If thats the case, then that should imply that theres nothing particularly proprietary or licensed, etc, that a rom would explicitly need to have in order to initiate these updates since it would never directly need to touch/see the files, just know that they were updated and what version number they are. What also lends me to believe this is the case is the fact that you can't select to downgrade the prl/profile, rollback, or load one manually, at least not that I can see.
So basically I'm saying that I hope it should be something simple to do. And if it is simple to do, you would think that custom roms would be able to read the carrier correctly too? Right now my new device reads "Boost" still. My previous one when I got it on ting I wanna say actually read ting afterwards. But when I loaded ressurrection remix, I had no cell/data/voice nothing, It just kept asking me for a sim card, which this phone doesnt have at all. When I loaded Lineage, everything cell related work. But can't update prl/profile, and carrier reads as "3G Roming Indicator Off" Which idk why thats the case.
Perhaps I'm missing something
Perhaps custom roms are missing a few somethings.
The only sure thing is that carriers need to just not be so greedy/dumb/uselessly difficult, and make giving them money for service easier, preferably without questions. Or at the very least actually provide some security so all this nonsense is at least worth something in the end to the end user, instead of being done so that they can try to spy on your unencrytped texts and calls to sell to advertisers, and selling access to the higest bidders such as the government and bounty hunters, whilst preventing you from restricting that information.
