I'd like to ask you guys for your input on a battery issue I've been having. I know you get many a question on batteries, despite this I haven't been able to find an answer, nor anything even related to what I'm trying to fix. I'm at a point where the phone wont last a day of idle at school with it not leaving my pocket, and I don't know what I need to do to resolve this rather unique issue.
I have two S3s, and therefore two batteries. On one of the phones the screen is shattered, so I use it to charge the extra battery. To do so I wrote a tasker profile which voices the battery percentage and time charging when it detects that the screen is "on" (i.e. power button pressed). I installed the exported app factory apk to the broken S3 by swapping motherboards. This setup has been working great for me because I never had to plug my S3 in, I could simply charge one battery at home while the other was in use. That is until about 3 weeks ago now where I've begun to notice that the phone I carry with me cannot properly read the percentage of charge remaining on the battery. I believe the issue started after a return to stock rom for unlocking, or flashing leankernel. A factory reset and all caches have been cleared since.
Here are some symtoms:
It remains unable to charge the battery above ~70%, without using the charging phone,
drains very rapidly,
upon reaching 0% a reboot causes the battery to return to roughly 45%,
and finally the battery percentage may raise while the phone is not charging
the charge may sit at within the range of 1% to 3% for extended periods of time (see screenshot).

Few apps installed as I just did a factory reset, with Google latitude location reporting set off.
While writing this post I swapped the batteries between the phone I use and the charging phone. The dead battery read 4% before I powered down, but when it was put into the charging phone it immediately voiced that that same battery had 81%. The battery that was removed from the charging phone was at 100%, but when the other phone booted that "charged" battery had 89%. That reading was taken when I started typing this post, at 5:45, and now 15 minutes later (6:00) the battery has lost 23% leaving it at 66. The draining phone sat idle while I wrote this post, as I am on my laptop, so that drop of 23% occurred with about 90% screen off time, (note that media scanner would be running since the phone just booted).
In the following screenshots you will notice the time is over 24 hours, this is because the phone has not held a 100% charge since then. Large direct jumps of power are either simple reboots or a battery change. Notice the graph increasing without the charging state being active. I chose not to include a bbs screenshot because the phone had just booted so there were no good reference points. Total screen on time is 4 hours 20 minutes, and 8tracks has had a CPU total of 1 hour 20 minutes with a keep awake of 2.5 hours.

Try using only one battery for couple of days, and see the results.

Sorry why exactly was it necessary to swap motherboards?
It sounds like some hardware on ur device is shot either the battery or something else..

Battery length is lasting longer now after using a single battery for a few days. I will continue to stay with one battery.

By "swap motherboards" I mean I attached one screen from one device to the other, it was necessary to install the charging app I wrote through tasker, to automate shutdown when charged, and say battery percentage when power button pressed. The matching motherboard and screen remained in their corresponding phones after that was done.

Normally I charge my phone nightly right before I go to bed and don't plug it in at all during the day usually.
I have noticed that on days where I have to use my phone heavily and require a charge midway through the day for the next week my phones battery life is almost cut in half. If I charge it regularly at night for a week or so the battery life will go back to normal. Has anyone else noticed this behavior? I'm trying to figure out if this is an incredible issue or an android issue.
Another thing I noticed is that under the battery stats it lists that my awake time is 43 hours. Its just slightly less that the up time. This makes me think that my phone isn't going to sleep. Anyone know how to tell if my phone is sleeping or tell me which app is keeping my phone from sleeping?

I checked the partial wake usage and I don't see anything out of the ordinary.
I actually have an update to the situation. As a last resort I wiped my phone and loaded Cyanogen 6.1. At first it was working awesome. Battery life was awesome but as time went on the battery life got worse and worse and now i'm back where I started.
It sure seems like there is software problem with the way the phone tracks the battery usage/charging information. As I said it seems like charging the phone midway through the day or charging the phone before the phone is dead seems to have a negative effect on the battery. I don't get it. Letting the phone completely die isn't realistic. Charging the phone when I go to bed without affecting how long the phone last after the next charge should be totally doable you would think.
Does anyone have any suggestions or insight that might help me out.
You don't say if you charge with the phone powered off or on. But sound like you're always charging with the phone turned on.
I don't think the phone charges fully while turned on (to prevent overheating maybe? ).
If you can, I'd suggest trying to charge with the phone off, at least during the nightly charge.

Yes I do charge my phone while its powered on (like the rest of the world). I don't know anyone that turns their phone off to charge.
My phone is paid for by my company so that they can get ahold of me in the event of a server failure or some other IT related disaster. If the phone was off I wouldn't be able to receive those important calls.
I can't believe no one else has witnessed this type of activity with the incredible. I have tried 2 phones (replaced for an unrelated reason) and 3 batteries. The behavior seems like a software glitch. I have noticed with with both AOSP and Sense Roms.
Does anyone have an in depth understanding of how the battery system works on this phone. I also have an Iphone and the battery life compared to my android phone is ridiculous. I would use the Iphone exclusively but it doesn't do everything my android phone can do. I'm hoping there is a way to fix this.
Well, now you do know someone who charges with their phone off. Me!
I'm in IT as well and on call one week per month. But we don't run a third shift, so late night calls are almost never, and they have my land line number.
Back on topic, I have experienced better battery life while charging with the phone off. Maybe you can get an external charger until a solution is found.

What do you mean by "get an external charger until a solution is found." Do you mean a second charger to charge during the day? I have plenty of chargers. Thats part of the problem. Charging in the middle of the day I believe is causing the problem. Until a solution is found? Are you saying there is in fact a problem?
Having to leave my phone plugged in all day kind of defeats the purpose of having a wireless phone don't you think?
Please...anyone have any knowledge of how the charging system works in android and specifically how it might work differently on the incredible?

I should have said get an extra battery and a stand-alone charger that allows you to charge the extra battery while it's disconnected from the phone.
Have you read the thread in general titled 'your battery gauge is lying to you'. (or something like that). Good read. Also there's hundreds of other threads on the inc's battery issues. Well known problem.

If your up time and awake time are essentially the same, you definitely have something running in the background. Try menu/settings/applications/running services and see what program might be running that shouldn't be. You can also use an app called System Panel to do a comprehensive survey. I recently had an update that resulted in the program running continuously in the background, affecting my battery life.
Some other threads have discussed that after 40+ hours of up time, their phone goes into max CPU usage all the time. Again, using the app System Panel, I confirmed this for my own phone at 45 hours. My ROM is the stock Froyo 2.2 with a custom kernel. the simple solution is to power off/power on the phone which resets the uptime.
My routine is to charge the phone with power on over night so I can use the alarm. When I get up in the morning, I power off the phone and bump charge it for about 30 minutes until the light turns green again. Then I'm usually good for about 10 - 12 hours of uptime with 3-4 hours of awake time using a 1500 battery. That time can also be reduced considerably if I'm receiving a poor 3G signal.
I did originally have a problem with a program not allowing my phone to sleep but I have since uninstalled that program and now my wake time numbers are where they should be. I think the remaining battery issues are a result of me having to charge my phone in the middle of the day as a result of the misbehaving program prior to me uninstalling it.
It almost seems like the the battery in the incredible has a memory. On a hunch I have started completely discharging my phone completely everynight before I put it on the charger. As a result my battery life as almost doubled. When I get home at night I start playing angry birds with the brightness at full until the battery gets to about 3 percent left. This obviously isn't a permanent solution but It certainly sheds some light on the root of the problem.
Prior to doing the full discharge I did a bump charge and wiped my battery stats. The battery is working great now. I wish someone would create a kernal/rom that has this issue resolved. Since these new lithium batteries aren't supposed to have a memory anymore I'm thinking it has to be something that the OS is doing with the battery stats file.
According to this article you should fully charge and discharge once every 30 or so charging cycles to resync the battery meter with the actual battery voltage. So maybe the complete discharge fixed your problems.

not sure if this will help or not, but i have been running advanced task killer ever since 2.1(haven't gotten around to uninstalling before now, ha ha) and recently uninstalled it and installed watchdog task manager and my battery has increased two fold!

a usb brick and inability to mount some nand partitions
and finally succeeding in fixing it, now using/running:

seems that has battery issues. When it reaches below 30%, it drains a lot faster. In example few minutes ago, the battery was below 30% level and after sending a couple of sms messages the phone, without the "Connect the charger" indication shut down. Not even the battery icon was red.
What should I do?
After flashing the above ROM I ran an app called battery calibration (could this be the culprit?).
I haven't experienced such problems before the whole mess mentioned above.

Well, it seems to me like a "classic" battery meter calibration issue.

1) charge the battery to 100%;

Regarding the matter of battery wear because of complete discharges, Li-Ion batteries do indeed have a lower cycle count than old-school batteries, but the standard charge/discharge number a Li-Ion battery can take is ~350, so you can't damage the battery pack by doing a full cycle per month (required to keep the battery meter accurate).

Did this work you mate? I have the same issue with my year old batter now... the phone shuts down @ 40% without any warning... and when I charge it, it starts from 0% and as soon as it hits the 58% mark, it jumps to 100% by itself... and i cant seem to figure out what the hell could I do to fix it... I tried calibrating the battery using the awesome method described here http://forum.cyanogenmod.com/topic/11823-battery-calibration-thread 3 times and nothing changed...

Weird that after calibration you still get that kind of issues, does this only happen on your current ROM? I have the latest CM in my desire and everything works just fine... Maybe try another ROM if calibration doesn't work to see if it's a hardware or software issue
i actually had issues with MIUI first.. the phone randomly shut down by itself but when i turned it back on, it was perfect... then i switched back to Oxygen and while everything was fine, suddenly one day the phone died at 40% :S and from that day on the phone charges to 58% and then instantly jumps to 100%... and as soon as it gets to 40% it shuts down itself... i guess i need a new battery but i wanted to see wether i can fix this one somehow so i can use it till the new one arrives...

phone turning off at 20% is fine mate because thats the battery guards against any damage
most of the phones ( smart phones) switch off at 20% as going lower can damage the System .
It shouldnt normally..It's supposed to work fine upto 5%

Today within 20 minutes of unplugging the phone from a full charge it read 40% charge. It's almost as if I am lacking 60% of my battery.. From when I got the phone (on release day), I had never found the battery to be very impressive. The advertised 800 hour standby time has always been far out of reach, and I often found myself having to plug the phone in after 7-8 hours, (I'm a student, so it's away all day as I'm in class, i.e, low use.)
I don't use WiFi (I have 7GB/mo data), I don't use automatic brightness (held between 5-20%), GPS is on (For some Tasker profiles, but is rarely used), and I have never used NFC/S-Beam.
I have done factory resets, two since having issues with the battery. The phone is rooted and is running CM 10.1-20130203-NIGHTLY-d2att, I thought that updating the CM build might help (Feb 3rd as you can see), but hasn't. Also it is underclocked to MAX 810mHz. Battery usage statistics pins the main user as the screen, but I feel this is false.
I'm thinking of buying a new battery, might that help?
TL;DR: I'm having battery problems, and have tried all the normal fixes I could find online. See the attached images for battery details.

Get the app BetterBatteryStats to narrow down what's draining your battery.
Also, being so UV = takes longer to load stuff = longer screen time = more battery usage. UV too much results in higher battery drain.

Okay I just bought Better Battery Stats, I'll let it analyze whats going on for the next few days.. And I assume UV means under voltage? Either way I put the processor speed back up to default (1512 mHz). But that still doesn't explain the 60% battery drop in 20 minutes after being unplugged.
I don't think it is possible for your phone in any case to drain 60% in 20 minutes. That's a ton of power usage, your phone would probably melt if it was using that much. Sounds like your phone is not reading your battery level properly. You may want to try resetting your battery stats, however I have heard that the s3 battery monitors its own level. In this case you probably would be better off just getting a new battery.

My Note 4 is 14mo old and for the last couple months it just shuts off on me even though I have plenty of power left.
I am a light user and usually have enough power for all day use. I rarely use my phone down past 10-15%. I always put my phone on the charger when I go to bed at night when I have somewhere around 20% charge left. If I notice that I might not have enough power to get me through the day I'll put it on the charger somewhere between 30 and 40%.
Lately, like tonight I got a low battery warning at 30% power while I was on the phone. Not even two minutes later it shuts off. When I turn it back on it starts to boot up but then shuts off again. When I put it on the charger it was completely dead. This only happens 3 or 4 times a month but it's annoying because often it happens at the most inconvenient time.
I've also had it shut off and then when I put it on the charger it starts charging at 28% power.
Please let me know what may be going on here and a solution...

I had the exact same issue. I had 2 different batteries shutting off at 20-30%!.... Replacing the battery to a brand new one simply fixed it!.... if you are going to order one online try to avoid unknown brands . Also, pay attention there are some fake Samsung batteries claiming to be authentic.
Also if you still have warranty, contact Samsung and they should send you a new one. That's what i also did.
So you think its the battery and not software related? I was thinking software issue because I don't abuse my battery by running it dead and it's an intermittent problem.
I know that the life cycle of Li-ion is greatly reduced by repeated draining to below 10% (my kid's phones suffer from that. Seems like they can't make a battery last more than 6mo) but I've never had a phone battery go bad on any of MY phones including my old Note 2 even after two years. Maybe I just have a bad battery?

Doesn't matter whether you abuse the battery or not. Some batteries just go bad faster than others. I also think it's your battery.
A factory reset without restoring apps will rule out a software issue though, but since we can't root, it likely isn't anything messing with your battery percent unless it's just an app draining your battery. But even if it were the latter, your battery wouldn't die then start charging at 28%.

Pretty sure this is an actual built in feature. Mines always died at ~20% (since the 5.1.1 update) and once plugged into a charger and rebooted all my running apps and clipboard info is still running as if the phone never died.
My battery is brand new (from warranty replacement) and it still does this so this is why I think it's a "feature" to keep you from losing data in the event of a low battery event. Just my opinion.

I once read to take out the battery, hold the power button for 30 seconds (while the battery is out), then put it back in and see if it helps. This supposedly gets rid of any residual power storage. I don't know if this is a placebo affect by after I did that, my battery now goes all the way to 0 before dieing.

Not exactly a placebo, but not sure if it truly helps. Doing this would clear all electricity stored in any capacitors in the phone. I'm just not sure how this helps.
And my battery goes all the way down to 0% too. It's not normal for the phone to due at any other % (except maybe 1%).

So I am on the WWE of Nougat, version 2.41.401.41. I was getting abysmal battery life, at about 2h30m screen on time, without doing anything special (just browsing, some social media, etc.).
Also, AccuBattery was showing the battery capacity at 2300 MhA, which I found quite impossible for a one year old device.
I suspected that my battery was badly calibrated. What I did is what is described in this thread, slightly modified:
Charge the phone while turned on up to 100%.
Remove the charger and reboot the phone. Upon reboot, the battery will have dropped at about 96-98%.
Reconnect the charger and charge again up to 100%.
Remove the charger again and reboot the phone. This time, the battery will have dropped again, but not as much as the first time.
Repeat steps 2 and 3 until after reboot your battery remains at 100% or at least 99% (depends on how freaky you want to get).
After doing the above I have been getting about 3h30m to 4h00m screen on time and AccuBattery is showing about 2700 MhA battery capacity.
Seems that HTC has really messed up the battery calibration on the 10. Hope this little "trick" helps you as much as it did help me.

A follow up to this, here is a reply I got from HTC support, regarding battery:
* For battery calibration :
please unplug the phone from charger - turn off the phone device - press on Volume up + Volume down - Power on button all at the same time till the phone started on , please check the battery indicator ,then follow as below :
1. Restart your device
2. Turn on Airplane Mode
3. Connect your device to the charger, and charge it fully
4. Set screen brightness to Max.
5. Set Screen Time out to never.
6. Dial *#*#3424#*#*, choose battery and Charging run down test, and follow the instructions.
If the device loses more than 40% of battery in an hour, then send your device to the repair center

Hey, so one month-ish on, how has the battery life been? Has it stayed at 3h30-4h00 screen time or has it dropped again like before?

Depends on the usage really. I have given up on measuring the SOT, I just plug in every day at night. But has been pretty stable, gets me through the day.

Fair enough, it's a bit pointless at this point to be honest. Does the phone reboot randomly below 50/60% or has calibration fixed that issue? That's the biggest gripe I have with the Nougat update at the moment. If calibration fixes it, I'm gonna do it now! If not, do you reckon another kernel fix it?

I have never had that issue, before or after "calibration". I am using stock ROM with ElementalX kernel (stock settings in Aroma).

Turns out it is a common issue:

i have 300 mah battery capacity on my htc 10 , happened overnight ...
A follow up to this, here is a reply I got from HTC support, regarding battery:
* For battery calibration :
please unplug the phone from charger - turn off the phone device - press on Volume up + Volume down - Power on button all at the same time till the phone started on , please check the battery indicator ,then follow as below :
1. Restart your device
2. Turn on Airplane Mode
3. Connect your device to the charger, and charge it fully
4. Set screen brightness to Max.
5. Set Screen Time out to never.
6. Dial *#*#3424#*#*, choose battery and Charging run down test, and follow the instructions.
If the device loses more than 40% of battery in an hour, then send your device to the repair center

Did that work for you?
For me the htc tool is showing like 6-7%discharge over the one hour...
But if I I use Spotify or any other online/local music app, this can't be true...
Seems to be a software problem, nothing to do with nougat or oreo, nor with firmware version.
Trying the "manual" calibration tomorrow.
About the 40% rule... I already had a support guy say it only needs to be 25%...
Still my battery is far far away from that... Sadly, would love to send it in to have a fresh battery...

from my understanding you are referring to the 40% in the quoted text
so when you do the test it should only lose about 25% in one hr like the HTC rep said to you instead of the 40 quoted by the other forum user?

Right, I am in contact with the HTC support using their FB chat.
Last time I asked, still on HTC One m7, it was around 40% for me too.
This time they said it should not drop below 75%.
To be sure you should ask the support yourself, maybe it depends on the country as well?

Have you tried wiping the cache partition, my battery was 100% & went to 81% and held its charge for much longer, it's a short way of clearing your battery stats
Another trick
I found an alternate trick and it looks like it's a bit more effective (at least for me):
Basically following OP's instructions: charging it to 100% then turn the phone off. But instead of restarting, Turn OFF the phone then hold power+volume down until the backlight of the back and app switcher buttons flashes twice then let go. Then turn on the phone while holding volume up. I think this helps force a battery recalibration every time.
When I did it once I got to 78% then the second restart 55%. I'm currently charging for the 3rd restart to see if I can get better than that. Previously when I tried OP's method a few days earlier I got 78% on the first restart , 98% on the second, and 99% for every time I tried after that.

Did you unplug the phone before turning it off or did you keep it plugged in?
have you guys tried the Chargie app? It's coupled with a hardware device that limits charging to the phone at your desired level and saves the battery long term.
Unfortunately none of the above did the trick for me. Still, the phone randomly (once in a while) goes to loop when 15 to 20 percent of charge is remaining and won't stop before I plug in a charger. /sad face/

Well the test consumed around 50% of my battery. The issue that started around a month ago is that my phone shuts off around 30% battery , however it won't switch on again till I plug-in the charger and when it is on , the battery is at 1%. Seems that the phones is displaying a 1% as 30% before shutting down. What should I do ?

I had the exact same problem. I sent it to HTC and got the battery replaced.
