Faux123 Kernel - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy Note II

Hey everyone I wanted to share with you all a kernel available for our T-Mobile Galaxy Note 2 by Faux123. There isn't a thread yet in our development section so I decided to start one here until Faux123 feels ready to start his own.
This is a Touchwiz kernel. You need to be running a Touchwiz rom
Download the kernel for our phone here (t0ltetmo):
http://androidhosting.org/Devs/Faux/t0ltetmo/jb41/
Link for other phones:
http://androidhosting.org/Devs/Faux/
If you like Faux123's work please feel free to donate to him to help him continue making great kernels for our devices.

Thought their was a thread all ready. Still debating because I prefer extfat over fat32 for my sd card but like faux work. Decisions decisions.
sent from my t-mo note 2

I didn't see one in our forums

You might want to detail what it will work with b4 posting links.

Didn't mods take faux thread down?

Good to hear. But couldn't Faux start his own thread, in development, where it's supposed to be, when HE is ready to?

I asked him if it was okay for me to start a discussion thread until he was ready. Its just so people can have a place to report their results with the kernel.

I have tried this kernel but went back to saber.issues with over not sticking and phone would not deep sleep

FauxClock Z control recommended settings:
Z-Control
Set On Boot - On for both
ZRAM Disk size - 150~200 Megabytes (or 50 MB when disabled)
ZRAM Enable/Disable - Enable if you mult-task often
Clear VFS Cache After Boot - On
Auto FS Writeback Delay Mode - On
Swappiness - 100% if ZRAM enabled, 0% if disabled
VFS Cache Pressure - 100% if ZRAM enabled, 150% if disabled
Dirty Ratio - 20% for both
Dirty Background Ratio - 5% for both

Hows battery life

Thank you for lookin' out, bhowanidin. If I may kindly ask, as I'm not familiar in experience with this kernel - does this kernel support several things:
1. Overclocking (if so, up to how hight)
2. Underclocking
3. Undervolting
4. GPU OC'ing
5 exFAT!!! I require this greatly...
6. and does it support T-Mobile's native Wi-Fi Calling (I require this in my apartment most important of all...)

faster zram/zcache and official exfat support is coming in the next version based on latest samsung's exfat 1.2.4 release

I love faux123 kernals!

This is a minimalistic Galaxy Nexus kernel. My philosophy is to keep the kernel as lean and stable as possible, at the same time to keep the kernel as modern and close to latest mainstream linux as possible. You will see that my kernels will lack some of the bells and whistles from other kernels.

FAQ
How do i change voltage? - Use the latest version of setcpu, leantweaks, cputuner, or your ROM's built-in tools.
Do i need to wipe dalvik/cache? - in general there's no need, but it doesn't hurt so if you have time go ahead. Posted Image I don't wipe.
Can we OC higher or add more frequency slots? - You can find the extra slots in my experimental versions.
Will this work on GSM gnexus as well? - It should. I don't have a GSM phone to test so let me know if it stops working.
What is interactiveX V2? Read this post and thttp://rootzwiki.com/topic/13092-kernel-leankernel-minimalistic-kernel-120-123111/page__view__findpost__p__342571
Are you getting Screen-Off/Sleep-Of Death (SOD), general instability, or unusual battery drain?
Before you post here (especially if you're running the experimental version), try the following steps in order:
0) dude, disable screen-off profiles if you're running interactiveX.
1) If you're running the experimental version, do you have 180mhz/230mhz and/or 1.42ghz slots enabled? If so disable them both!
2) If the above doesn't help, do you have custom undervolting enabled? If so disable it! (keep in mind that the kernel is already undervolted by default).
3) If the above doesn't help, are you using interactiveX or hotplug governors? If so change to interactive.
4) If the above doesn't help then you should not be running the experimental version. Install the stable version and try both interactiveX and interactive without custom undervolting.
If you're still getting SOD with stable/interactive, report it here.
What about call-recording? - First the app needs to support Galaxy Nexus. Find out if it does and then find out from the author of the app what kernel changes are required and let me know.
Should i set up screen-off profile? - ICS kernels have built-in screen-off profile for all governors at 700mhz. So you don't need it unless you want to set it lower than 700mhz. In general there isn't a whole lot to gain by setting it lower.
Hotplug vs interactiveX? - Read this post. HotplugX vs interactiveX
What is zram and why do i need it?
zram basically takes a portion of your RAM (10% using my script) and turns it into a compressed swap device. So in layman's terms you're extending the size of your memory (potentially from ~700mb to close to 1000mb depending on the compression ratio).
To answer the 2nd question, no you don't really need it but if used properly (using custom LK zram script) it could help you in two different ways:
1) Android OS is based on Linux OS and the OS will try to use a growing portion of your RAM for file and inode caches and if you keep your phone up without rebooting after a while you may notice things getting a little sluggish. That's because the OS is not doing a good job in dropping the caches and freeing up memory for the apps.
2) more RAM and tweaked minfree (also handled by custom LK script) could potentially allow your apps to stay in memory longer (this may or may not be desirable based on your preference of course).
In conclusion, I'd say if you're curious it doesn't hurt to try. To revert, just type "zram disable".
What's the low-down on the GPU OC?
My kernel's GPU is now set to stock 307Mhz by default. You can adjust that by using Variable GPU OC (see a separate FAQ entry below).
When you go from say 307 to 512Mhz, you will not experience near double performance increase. Due to the factors outside the GPU module (ie. memory bandwidth limitation), you can't truly OC the GPU. In fact, most people can't tell the difference between 307, 384 and 512. Nenamark2 will roughly give you the following scores: 307/25fps, 384/28fps, and 512/31fps.
Some of you have seen the note from Colin, the Google kernel engineer, not to OC the GPU because using the OV_UV voltage slot will drain the battery. My kernel uses the same voltage for both OV and OV_UV slots. So there's no danger of battery drain there.
Why are the IO benchmark test scores lower than another kernel?
Some of the kernels out there have fsync disabled to increase benchmark scores. I believe that is unsafe and could cause data corruption. I do have hooks in my kernel to disable it but I don't use it.
In real world there will not be any user perceivable difference whether you have fsync enabled or disabled.
Is there a way to tune hotplug via sysfs?
yes. Advanced users only!
My phone doesn't seem to be deep-sleeping, what gives?
(assuming you checked in the right place like cpuspy) In terms of deep-sleep, there's not a whole lot going on in the kernel. It works or it doesn't - and I can assure you that I test every release (well almost every release) for deep-sleep before I release.
19 out of 20 times it's either 1) some sort of background process that's preventing your phone from going into deepsleep, or 2) something's misconfigured in your ROM, or both. Also connecting to USB will prevent phone from going into deepsleep.
I'm having unusual battery drain - help!
First of all, our gnex has very poor battery life while in active use. It's downright horrible while screen is on - screen is definitely the main culprit and there's not a whole lot I can do about that.
Custom undervolting can help or can hurt. This is mainly due to SmartReflex (class1.5) which auto-calibrates the ideal voltages for you. In fact, with SR you don't really need to use the custom undervolting feature for frequencies other than the 2 lowest. It does a great job calibrating higher frequencies. I personally don't touch it.
The "notrim" versions are an exception because I had to disable SR1.5 for the trim override to work. There's no auto-calibration going on there. Feel free to mess with custom undervolting on the notrim versions.
Now, if you've already accepted the horrible battery life while screen is on, but have questions about battery drain while idle - read the next question.
I'm having unusual battery drain while screen is off, or phone is sleeping - help!
First, let's find out if you're phone is going into deep-sleep. Install CPUSpy, unplug phone, turn off screen, and leave the phone alone for 5-10min. Turn the screen back on, launch CPUSpy, and see if you see an active entry for Deep Sleep. If so congratulations - read on.
If you've determined that your phone is not entering deepsleep by using the above method, read my entry above that says "My phone doesn't seem to be deep-sleeping". I've heard that removing SDM.apk helps as well as rebooting the phone. Also try turning your bluetooth on and off, and launching camera app and closing it.
If you've determined that your phone is entering deepsleep fine but still feel like battery drains, read the next question.
I'm having unusual battery drain while phone is in deep-sleep - help!
First make sure you are absolutely positive that deep sleep is working (read the previous question).
While on my kernel *and* connected to Wifi, you shouldn't drain more than 1% battery per hour *average* while in deep sleep (based on 5-8 hour continuous deep sleep). With wifi turned-off, my guess is probably no more than 1-3% per hour, depending on signal strength.
tip 1: If above is not happening for you, first charge the phone all the way and reboot. Let things settle a bit - give it a day or so. If you're using Battery Monitor Widget (which is not accurate for gnex), things should eventually settle between -2mA and -60mA per sample.
tip 2: Install BetterBatteryStats and look at which wakelocks dominate. Google search for names of the wakelocks to see how you can fix them.
tip 3: http://checkthis.com/d87t
If nothing seems to help, you can try the "notrim" version, but stick to speeds between 350 and 1350 (don't use OC slots). The notrim version has SR1.5 disabled which could help for those of you with drain issues on my other kernels.
What is tempcontrol and how do I use it?
First, read these two posts: 1 and 2.
Although tempcontrol was designed to be used with the experimental notrim builds because the cpu gets hotter in notrim frequencies, you can actually use tempcontrol to throttle lower frequencies. I haven't tried myself, but theoretically you can set your top speed at say 1.2Ghz and use tempcontrol to throttle at say 60C (instead of the stock value of 63C) resulting in slightly cooler phone. Theoretically.
What is SmartReflex?
SmartReflex performs continuous dynamic voltage scaling around the nominal operating point voltage according to silicon characteristics and operating conditions.
My stable and experimental builds will have SR Class 1.5 enabled by default.
You can disable SR via sysfs
How do I use Variable GPU OC?
You can use Lean Tweaks by Jake, or use the built-in "oc" script. Both leantweaks and my oc script will create an init.d script so the setting sticks at boot. My "checkt" script will also show the current GPU max speed. Note that 512MHz will probably not work for everyone.
307Mhz (stock) is set default by the kernel.
Open Terminal, and type for stock speed of 307Mhz: oc gpu 0
for 384MHz: oc gpu 1
for 512Mhz: oc gpu 2
What are the available sysfs options?
Check this post (thx byrong)
Which governor should I use on JB?
As usual I'd recommend trying all the governors and see which one works best for you. Stock JB, however, is optimized for interactive. The OS will automatically modify various interactive governor parameters on the fly while you're using the phone as part of "project butter". Namely, the following parameters are constantly adjusted by the OS: boostpulse, timer_rate, min_sample_time, hispeed_freq, go_hispeed_load, and above_hispeed_delay.
I hope this helps people if there is any other information you might want added just ask and i will do my best to come up with a comprehensive guide.

That's all hunky dory but just doing things without asking the developer is just not right. Regardless if he has an issue or not. Its like you make something you work diligently on and then somebody just posts it somewhere else.

Well i have gotten permission to post this from imoseyon and to keep this thread updated on xda sprint forums for him so it looks like we are all set he got back to me alot faster then i thought he would so every thing should be all good guys
and yes jayare313 i am so used to finding every thing i need on xda some times it s a pain having to check 3 or 4 sites to see if any of your mods for your rom are updated
Sorry. 3 issues here:
1) I need to verify permission from the developer and he needs to verify that he is going to support it here. If someone downloads it, flashes it, and somethings wrong.......who is going to give answers and support it? We have an active community who can help, sure, but the developer has to actively support it here. If he were ready to give support here, he would have posted it here already. And even then it would have to go in general unless he started the thread.
2) There is no source provided in the OP. Kernels must be GPL compliant and listed in the OP.
3) If you did not create it, do not post it in the development section.
Alrighty. Everything should be good now. I'll be keeping an eye out.
OP will be updated soon, with source and I've spoken to the developer.
Thank you guys.

[KERNEL][TW] Note2Core v2.10 - Standard, OC, Extreme; AsylumCore 2.11

Note2Core Kernel for Galaxy Note II N7100 / N7105 (LTE)
I am posting this here because it works on our LTE notes, since they all use a Qualcomm modem. I am running I on my AT&T note with no issues. All credit goes to g.lewarne - I am just posting here to so he doesn't have to maintain 2 threads. See his original post here
For the moment, exFAT formatted SD cards are NOT supported.
About this kernel
This kernel is built from pure Samsung GT-N7100 source, with modifications and tweaks to provide the best user experience in reliability, performance and stability. Built upon my experience firstly with NoteCore and then HydraCore for the original Note, as many of you know, I strive for the best
There are 4 versions of each kernel, for the International LTE model GT-N7105.
This kernel has all debuging removed - logcat, android log, kernel log, schedular log, etc etc all disabled. This is for performance reasons, so if you are a developer this kernel is probably not for you
Kernel Versions
There are three variants of the kernel for each device
STANDARD (STD) - 1.6ghz FSync() enabled
OVERCLOCK (OC) - 1.8ghz FSync() enabled
EXTREME (EX) - 1.8ghz FSync() disabled
ASYLUM (AS) - 1.920ghz FSync() disabled
The standard version, has no modifications to the processor clocks or voltages and can be considered a direct replacement for the stock kernel, and with FSync() enabled is completely stable
The OC kernel automatically scales up to 1.8ghz, with the proven voltages and stability from the perseus kernel (the same frequency table is used), and with FSync() enabled is completely stable
The EX kernel also scales to 1.8ghz, and has FSync() disabled. It offers by far the best possible performance. In rare circumstances you must be aware that this can lead to data corruption and the need to wipe / reflash a rom back to the phone. 99% of people will have no issues with this, as it has been extensively tested and proven on my previous kernel, but the risk is there. Dont go moaning to me if you lose your data and haven't got a nandroid backup!
The AS kernel is meant for the crazy ones. People who come from an asylum, those from the Note 1 know I am crazy, so this was meant for them. If there is a demand for the 7100 I will build that as well. I am not responsible if you are able to cook bacon on your device after running. It features up to a 1.920ghz over clock, and 640ghz on the GPU, it will go up, however for the moment we will run with 640. The phantom bug is that voltages cannot be set with SetCPU. Neither myself nor gavin know why. The code is spot on. So we don't get it. Lol. The source code is on github.com/glewarne

Yes, exFAT is not supported, we just found out. A fix is coming soon. Also videos in games such as zombie wood don't play. Fixes coming soon.
Nice to see another kernel here.
Can you please update the OP with a link to the original n7100/n7105 kernel thread? (It might make it easier for users to pop over there and see current discussion, etc.)
Also, I'm kind of curious what kind of difference people have noticed by blocking the majority of kernel logging. In theory, it shouldn't make make a significant difference, but I never got around to testing it, so I'm not sure how well the theory applies. (kernel logs aren't backed by persistent storage, so there's no real I/O overhead to it.)
Take care

Using the extreme version, pegasusq and noop.
If you guys try and play a movie in game, of won't work. There is a fox already and I'm running it on my phone. However he is trying to figure out ex fat before another version.
I just flashed this , cleared all my cache prior and after to installing it but for some reason I can't watch a video. ( I know you stated you can't in a game, but I can't in just my gallery)
I installed the OC one.. I will reflash to std one and report back
EDIT: flashed the STD one cleared all caches again and nothing.
Using the ex kernal without oc on dagr8 rom. Getting quadrant of 6700 if it matters to anyone.

Watch a video in what? The gallery works, you tube works, the only thing that should not is video through a game. Which has been fixed, and uploaded. download the new version 1.01

Yeah I wasn't able to watch a video in my gallery, I just reflashed to the Perseus kernel after another cache wipe and it works again.
I tried both the OC and STD ones you had linked but both would not allow me to watch a video. ( Just gave me an error)
I will download the new version and try thanks!

[KERNEL][TW] Note2Core v2.10- Standard, OC, Extreme,AsylumCore

[KERNEL][TW] Note2Core v1.06 -Standard, OC, Extreme,AsylumCore
Note2Core Kernel for Galaxy Note II N7100 / N7105 (LTE)
I am posting this here because it works on our LTE notes, since they all use a Qualcomm modem. I am running on my TMO T889 note with no issues. All credit goes to g.lewarne, antiochasylum - I am just posting here to so he doesn't have to maintain 2 threads. See their original post
Note2core http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2001838
AsylumCorehttp://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2001936
About this kernel
This kernel is built from pure Samsung GT-N7100 source, with modifications and tweaks to provide the best user experience in reliability, performance and stability. Built upon my experience firstly with NoteCore and then HydraCore for the original Note, as many of you know, I strive for the best
There are 3 versions of each kernel, for the International LTE model GT-N7105.
This kernel has all debuging removed - logcat, android log, kernel log, schedular log, etc etc all disabled. This is for performance reasons, so if you are a developer this kernel is probably not for you
For the moment, exFAT formatted SDCards are not supported
Kernel Versions
There are three variants of the kernel for each device
STANDARD (STD) - 1.6ghz FSync() enabled
OVERCLOCK (OC) - 1.8ghz FSync() enabled
EXTREME (EX) - 1.8ghz FSync() disabled
Kernel Features
- Built from official GT-N7100 sources
- 1.6 / 1.8ghz auto scaling
- Optimised VM memory settings, and global readahead
- Auto-rooting of any rom when flashed, even stock
- init.d script support
- CPU Voltage support through 3rd party apps
- Modified GPU DVFS utilisation steps for maximum GPU performance, far better than stock (this is NOT overclocking!)
- No logging / debugging of any kind for higher performance
- Decreased CPU frequency transition latency
- CRC32 slicing-by-8 algorithm
- SLUB allocator
- PEGASUSQ governor (default, others available)
- NOOP schedular, (default, others available)
- +50mb more free ram compared to all other kernels
- lots of other minor tweaks and changes
- ODIN TAR and CWM ZIPS available for all versions
- TouchWiz roms only

- based off new source code 7100T
- compiled using latest linaro tool chain
- tweaked gpu scaling
- ro.secure=0 - I was tired of typing mount -o remount,rw -t /dev/block/mmcblk0p13 /system everytime to push a modified APK
- voltage bug still present
AsylumCore 1.339
- 1.920 CPU over clock
- 640 GPU clock
- other optimizations
Changelog
V2.10
- Rebuilt from new N7100T source, released Dec 3rd
- All rotation issues in 4.1.2 fixed
- GPU steps reworked for better speed and responsiveness
- Built with linaro 12.11 GCC toolchain, with -O3 optimisation level
- lots of other internal changes
v1.06
-Fixed Triangle Away
- Maybe fixed rotation / sensor issues on some of the new 4.1.2 roms
1.05
- Fixed all voltage setting and reporting problems (you may need to clear app data in your chosen voltage app)
- Swapped to arm-eabi- 4.4.3 google toolchain rather than arm-linux-androideabi- 4.4.3
- Some minor bigfixes
- Decreased bus frequency increase threshold
v1.02
- Fixed video recording
- Added custom boot animation support, to use place desired boot animation in /system/media under *bootanimation.zip*
v1.01
- Fixed video playback for some users.
v1.00
- Initial release
GPL and Source
I dont use GitHub, so I make my entire kernel source, kitchen, build scripts, ramdisks and build tools available in one complete tarball. Also included in the TAR is a standard .patch which anyone can use to apply my changes against their own source tree. Almost everything you need to make your own version of a Note2Core kernel is included in the download - the only exceptions are the required linux packages.
You can download the latest source here - http://www.hecubus.com/filelist.php?...2core/source

For anyone who might not know, HydraCore for the Original Note was by far the fastest & smoothest kernel available. It also gave enhanced battery life compared to stock. I know that sounds improbable to get higher performance even at a higher clock and with better battery life, but it's true!
Unfortunately, I have not had much time to research the implications of swapping kernels (especially since there seems to be added modification detections in place compared to the Note 1) on this phone since I've only had it for a few days now, but when I do this will be my first attempt. Currently I'm just rooted w/o custom recovery but I'm dying to further enhance my phone. :victory:

A couple questions, if I'm rooted but without custom recovery can I just use mobile Odin or Pc Odin to flash the kernel? Will this give me a custom recovery? Also by doing this will it increase my flash counter?

I don't know anything about Kernels but I always love trying new stuff. I was just wanting to see if anyone could comment on what the author of the perseus kernel said about using this kernel on one of the American variants of the Galaxy Note 2? He said,
"The author completely disregards that the US versions have some hardware changes to them and using the 7105 kernel image on this device can be potentially dangerous as the GPIO pins between the US versions and the international version are different and things like battery charging can break. There are several power and charging differences between the two. It's lucky that this is only the AT&T version as on other carriers it would also break sound and volume. Use at your own choice but it's not something to be recommended."
I'm not trying to stir things up I just want to make sure it's safe to use this long term and I don't know enough about Kernels to know the difference. Thanks.

Anyone plugged in some headphones and adjusted volume yet?
Not sure if this is warranted or not (OP I'll delete if you request), but I ran a 7105 kernel on my SGH-T889 and within 24 hours my screen died. Phone still worked, touchscreen worked too, but it didn't light up anymore. Maybe it's a completely unrelated coincidence, just saying what happened to my phone when I was running the wrong kernel.

I thought kernels included the recovery, because I've swapped kernels before and it changes my CMW version or just change my recovery entirely.

I am still fixing my git hub right now looks like I switched repositories and made a few commits the wrong way like didnt show records quite right because of the mix. however I am going to fix that later I just realized this after looking to see if I made the kernel go to 1.89 ghz while booting up for a faster boot =] so no worries to you up and coming kernel devs I will show you how I did it on git the right way. to regular users this means nothing special to you. git is just a record of the files and text code in those files to share with others, which I def want to do since I couldn't find the coding for oc up to 1890mhz and would love to share that.

Hey Rushing, just tried this on top of JMT8 (with super cache wipe/twrp 2.6.1) and WiFi seems to be broken! Toggle in settings will not stay in ON position. Flashed back to twrp 2.6.0 because of your instructions and tried again (no cache wipe),same result. Flashed back to Tiberious 2.1 (no cache wipe) and phone booted up with WiFi on and working again.

Okay, thanks for testing I likely will never have time to flash all the ROMs and test compatibility.
I will take another stab at it. this time around all the modules will be deleted and replaced
where as in the first version the modules were expected to flash over the old ones which i guess doesnt always werk as leftovers may be uncompatible.
new build 1.1 is up thanks for testing let me know of success or failure please..
the new build works for me on my own ROM.
Wi-fi working fine here but I'm also using Rushing's Shad0w ROM. (1.1 version of kernel)
Just out of curiosity, Rushing, which of your ROMs do you use as your daily on the hercules?
Just tried 1.1 and WiFi still won't turn on with JMT8, obviously compatibility issue between the 2 of some sort. Per @aahz, kernel appears compatible with your roms Rushing. To continue the test, I'm going to flash my Shadow 1.6 nandroid tomorrow and then try 1.0 and 1.1 both just to see (and confirm). Looking forward to your next Hercules rom brother, Later

Most everyone here is eager to help, and the only thing we ask is (despite the associated tedium) read the entire thread, it can only help. If and when you are still stuck, feel free to ask questions, we're all here to help one another.

No sir,
More.. is usually in all of my feature lists because I always seem to forget something
Does it feature color control to change values in gamma and rgb settings?
First, thanks for sharing the kernel, i like it to play with different kernel.
One question,
Gamma Control a planned feature in the future ?

No. this is a v1 so many of what will be added is not currently there.
Also, the goal of this kernel is to stay as close to stock as possible while enhancing the performance, battery-life, and usability of the device.
Color and sound may or may not be included in future iterations

Favorite Note 2 kernel was Jedi. Nice to see its way to Hammerhead!

Do core (two or three) in offline?
Ok will try it now
Edit: kernel runs... Looking for good settings. Using ondemand and deadline for now.
One thing I miss.... A sound mod... Sound is to low... And the quality is not the best... Are there alternatives?

I'm pretty sure the dev wants us to use stock settings. Otherwise he wouldn't have made them default
For sound use viper mod. I don't see any kernel changes necessary for this.
Runs ok. Oc to 2.5. Uv would be nice
Slimlat 5.0.2

This. Glad to see him around here. Didn't think he would have a Nexus 5. Welcome to the Nexus 5, hope you're here to stay man.
Edit : Reporting that Jedi kernel does in fact run on 5.0.2 stable so far.
