Just update and boot to recovery and see if it stuck or not. If I remember correctly it doesn't stick right now because we don't have NAND root. I had to use the unrevoked flash tool for both updates so far otherwise it just downloads but never flashes.
I am conditioning my batterystats.bin right now so I cannot try it, sorry.
You can boot into once you flash it with Rom Manager but once you reboot it its gone, just tried it.
Ok I'll give my clarification again:
"Fully rooted" is a meaningless term. You have superuser access on your phone, that means you have root.
An additional level of protection that HTC has added to their phones is a NAND-flash chip which is locked by a memory protection unit. This is below the OS level, and thus below superuser. You can still have full root access to your phone, and not have access to this chip. The reflash tool unlocks NAND and reflashes the recovery partition.
The only way to unlock this at the hardware level is an exploit, or by changing hboot such that it does not initiate the NAND protection. We are still hesitant to flash hboot. If you mess up reflashing recovery, you have an unlimited number of chances to get it right. If you mess up reflashing hboot, you have a permanent brick.
Thus, since the recovery partition is protected by this hardware-level memory protection unit, ROM manager cannot reflash the recovery partition. You people seem to say that this is "not fully rooted" so "it is not sticking". Whatever. Yes, it won't "stick". No, this doesn't actually matter. You get *precisely* the same effect by updating in ROM manager. If there is a critical update that requires flashing, we will make sure that our users obtain this update.

Thanks for the clarification.
Why, may I ask, is your team so hesitant to flash hboot? This was integral part to development on the G1/Dream until this year, when certain saavy devs developed workarounds for flash-storage limitations (i.e., no ROMs above 64mb). Many of us took the DangerSPL leap and our G1s lived to run 30mb+ extra partition space. Why the hesitancy on Unrevoked's part, then? Are the chances very good that the procedure will brick/trip nand-security to lock-up the device -- a.k.a. bricking it?
I'm curious, any info is appreciated.
There appears to be error-code-correction which we triggered last time we tried flashing hboot, resulting in binny's brick.
We think we can try again, and we will soon enough.
Can you flash the new recovery with unrevoked flash tool.

I flashed the Clockwork Mod Recovery to 2.0.21 and when I reboot Rom Manager says I have 2.0.21 still. It seems to have stuck for me?
Try turning off the phone and then booting into recovery. Im prtty sure it wont stick then

I have rebooted, went into recovery, wiped the device, loaded a rom, and installed Rom Manager again. It still says it has 2.0.21. Maybe Rom Manager is just reading it wrong?
My clockwork recovery has stuck as well. I also updated it with rom manager and its still there. Has been for a couple weeks now.

Don't reboot into recovery from rom manager. Physically turn off the phone by using the power button or pulling the battery, and then boot into recovery by holding down power and volume down and then selecting recovery. Then check your version of recovery.
I have booted through rom manager, pulled the battery, used quick boot recovery and used adb reboot recovery. All have the same one.

Well if you read the whole thread you would see others saying it doesnt stick. So I was puzzled as to why it seemed to stick for me.
But after I went into Clockwork and looked at the version there I understood what everyone was saying ... Rom Manager is saying its the newest version but in realitity it is the old version still.

Does clockworkmod overwrite the stock recovery? If it does then to me it is not a safe method to root a phone. If something goes wrong while flashing clockwork you will lose the stock recovery and can never reflash anything else. Is my understanding correct? This is why I am hesitant to root my phone. Please advice.
Thanks.

Its fairly safe. You could always flash the recovery thru odin found here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1332103
Has anyone tried to flash clockwork and failed? What happened afterwards? I assume odin won't work anymore because it requires a recovery partition to work.
I guess what I am still confused about is if clockwork writes over the stock recovery or does it keep the stock recovery in-tacked. I would prefer the later since then you can never break your phone.
With my dilemma would it be best for me to not install clockwork and just use an insecure kernel? Thanks.
It does overwrite the stock recovery i believe. But its very safe to flash. Ive never heard of someone borking a phone installing cwm recovery.
I have literally NEVER had a problem with clockworkmod, it's one of the best pieces of mobile software I've ever used.

Odin has NOTHING to do with the recovery partition. ODIN only works in download mode on your phone. You can have a blank recovery partition and it'll still work, as well as the rom, and flashing other things too. The recovery partition stock has one function, to do a factory reset incase of problems. (Not to be confused with the one from inside android, that only formats /data. This one replaces the system partition as well.) CWM is very safe, I really wouldn't worry about it. Just follow the instructions carefully and you'll be fine.
Also, once you get cwm installed on there, I'd suggest doing a backup before you make any changes. Always handy to have your stock image at hand, just incase.
And also, even with stock recovery, you can still break your phone. It's not easy to brick a GS2, but it can be done. Just remember, as long as you can get the phone into download mode, it's not bricked. You can always odin back the stock partitions if you run into issues.
I was a little worried about using it with this phone. No problems to report. Just had to make backup in recovery.

Thanks mstrk242 for the great explanation. I thought the "download" and "recovery" were two states of a single program. It is clear now that they are separate. You just cleared all my worries.
You said "It's not easy to brick a GS2, but it can be done," can you tell me how this can happen? Just curious. Thanks much.
If you're going to be rooting/flashing at all, you'll have to get comfortable with cwm, Odin, and the other tools that are available for the phone.
This is my second Android phone, both have been rooted with custom roms, and at any point I've run into trouble (which is rare) I've found the tools and the help I need on here by searching a little bit. If you're willing to spend the time doing a bit of reading and know your way around a computer a bit, you won't have a problem. Just make sure you're 100% sure whatever you're flashing is for YOUR phone hardware.
It's not nearly as scary as it sounds once you get going on it and there's a lot to benefit from it.
Cheers and good luck.

Easiest way is to flash a rom for the wrong phone and mess up the partition table. (IE flash an international version of the gs2 rom, you'll brick.)
As long as you get cwm installed on there, and flash the correct roms, you should really be ok.
You can go back to the stock recovery easily. You can do it through Odin or flash an unroot rom

This is from using the instructions in Strawmetal’s PDF guide to Downgrading from Gingerbread to Froyo and Root. I am working with a G2 phone that was set to Factory Reset before rooting, so there is no user data to backup or worry about.
1. I downloaded the Andromadus Mimicry 1.1.2 ROM image, and verified the md5 checksum on my sdcard using the AFV Legacy application. The Gapps image also was verified as well.
2. Using ROM Manager 5.0.0.8 from the Google Market, I ran Clockwork Recovery to install the Andromadus image. I left all settings on defaults and the installer ran fine.
3. When it restarted, I was left stuck at the white HTC screen for ages… the longest I left it was 20 mins. After that, I pulled the battery and restarted. Same white HTC screen.
4. I tried using Volume (+) key and Power On to get back to Clockwork Recovery, but the phone vibrated (buzzed) 3x times quickly, and the Power LED lamp pulsed an amber color. Again, yank battery, restart, same white HTC screen.
5. finally I decided to read more of the help for adb, and found the command “adb reboot-bootloader”. This let me get into the default Recovery mode, and it proceeded to find the PC10IMG.zip I still had on the sdcard from doing the Froyo downgrade. Recovery checked it out, ran it and restored the stock Froyo image and my phone did a proper restart. WHEW.
After that, I had to run adb to install the hboot recovery image file, and the busybox checksums were valid according to Strawmetal’s PDF instructions to get permanent root back after restoring the stock Froyo image.
I have done this process about 4 times, and am really good at typing inside adb now
But I’m lost…
-did I pick a ROM that doesn’t work with the G2? Other posters to the forum thread appear to be using the HTC Vision or G2.
-is ROM Manager not a good way to install a ROM?
-when I tried to get back into Recovery, what do the 3x buzzes/amber power LED mean?
-I never got to install the Gapps image; was I supposed to install that first, then the ROM image?
I imagine I did something wrong (duh!), but I can’t spot it. If someone can help me through this, I’d appreciate some advice very much.
thanks!
Rather than clockwork, use 4EXT recovery, much better for our device. ROM manager and clockwork have grown very iffy over the past year. Don't use rom manager to install a rom, download the zip yourself and manually install it in recovery.
Next you need to find the "superwipe+ext4.zip" floating around here, it is indispensable for FULLY wiping your phone when switching roms.
Mimicry works fine on the G2, in fact everything (except a few sense roms that need a Desire Z hboot) in the development section runs fine on the G2.
So....get the ROM, GApps for that ROM, the Superwipe zip (you will flash this right before you begin flashing the rom) on your SD card and make sure you are using 4EXT recovery (find the link in the dev section).
Make sure before you do ANYTHING you make a Nandroid backup (using your recovery).
Your issue is actually addressed in the Mimicry OP, please read it first. That said, the problem is almost certainly because you're coming from GB without a full wipe. You can use 4ext to repartiton/wipe all, or you can use superwipe+ext4 as mentioned by Nospin.

Hi Nospin,
Thank you very much for your suggestions!
I will revise my root and remove Clockwork, and switch to 4EXT instead.
I appreciate the idea of "superwipe"; I will look for that as well today.
If I understand everything right...
-replace CWM with 4EXT
-place superwipe.zip, Gapps.zip and the Mimicry ROM.zip on the top level of the sdcard first.
-reboot the phone and run 4EXT recovery
-select superwipe to run first, then the ROM and then Gapps
-then restart the phone
When I used CWM before to install the ROM, it rebooted on its own before I could install Gapps. Will 4EXT let me do each install right after each other or do I have to return to 4EXT for each separate install?

motionmonk

Hi blk_jack,
I went back to the Mimicry page and re-read the FAQ section.
I think what I got out of it the first time was that if the ROM flash failed, it could be a corrupt ROM image. I will definitely use 4EXT to repartition before I try again with a ROM flash.
I guess I am still getting used to the terms for everything; can 4EXT do the nandroid backup? or is there a better process for setting that up?
thank you!

Update-not working
Ok...
I re-flashed back to stock Froyo, and did a permanent root.
Installed 4ext Recovery (instead of Clockwork), and got a copy of SuperwipeG2+ext4;
I copied new checksum'd copies of Mimicry 1.1.2 ROM and GApps to my sdcard.
Booted into 4ext Recovery and installed from .zip the SuperwipeG2+ext4 file.
System, data and cache are all converted to ext4 partitions.
Wiped the system and data and cache partitions.
Installed from inside Recovery the Mimicry ROM and then the GApps archives.
No errors reported.
Upon reboot, I still get the white HTC screen. UGH.
I've left it on in that state for 30 mins... I had to yank the battery after that in shame...
I have tried to make sure that I read up on background steps, and I feel I do understand the overall process, but something is still getting in the way. I am doing this as I mentioned in an earlier post on a factory reset G2 with a clean erased SD card (has the stock Froyo image, Andromadus Mimicry ROM and GApps only). There is no SIM card installed either, wifi is off (to avoid OTA upgrade requests).
Are there other things I can try, or info I can supply that would help? I think I'm so close to getting this done... I must be overlooking something obvious.
I run that by rom along with Cm9 beta..... Try adding that to your boot process. Just Cm9 beta..... Other than version of crash.... That's just what I have experienced

Ugh....it's frustrating isn't it?
Can you boot into any other rom? For example if you downloaded CM7.2? If you don't have any problems we can eliminate some possibilities.....
I had a similar problem booting into Mimicry my first time, in that I could get past the white HTC screen but after that my screen would just go black. After a couple frustrating hours what ended up working for me was downloading the older version (1.1.1 I think?) and that booted up fine . Then after letting that boot I went back into recovery and flashed 1.1.2 without wiping (I might have wiped cache and dalvik...). Everything worked great after that. Not the same problem as you, but similar.....
It's definitely a thought, and I believe that's what amogil is telling me too...
Ya, I can try a different ROM and report back.
I guess I should go back to stock Froyo and then start from CM7.2, and if that boots, try Mimicry again?
-from the Andromadus FAQ, it says it if a different ROM is based on ICS9, you shouldn't have to wipe. But with CM7, I'd have to wipe the Dalvik cache, yes?
-since CM7 is obviously not based on ICS9, would being able to launch into that show some details I can't see at present? Just was curious.
Or, do you think it better to go stock Froyo and then the older Mimicry ROM?
Either way, I'll make sure that I use the Superwipe to set things to ext4 first.
thanks guys for the ideas,
motionmonk

SUCCESS!
Woohoo!
It works!
Since I had an ICS9 ROM already in place and was planning to wipe back to stock anyways, I tried flashing the older Andromadus 1.1.0 ROM.
What a surprise and treat to see the startup animation!
After poking around for an hour inside it, I then tried Recovery to reflash to the newest 1.1.2 ROM.
YAY! It works!
OMG, having a new ROM is like having a new phone-- there are so many improvements to the UI and it's quick and speedy versus GB. Dang, I'm happy now :victory:
Observations:
1. I did notice that inside Recovery, my touchscreen was barely functional when I tried to update from 1.1.0 up to 1.1.2-- I had to use the Volume +/- and the d-pad button to make selections. After the flash, the touchscreen is as responsive as ever.
2. it's got me thinking, that there must be a setting that is expected in the v1.1.2 ROM that the v1.1.0 ROM installed. Or could something else be the issue? I mean absolutely no disrespect to the developers... but on the technical side, I'm just curious what possibilities exist that might lead to this situation.
3. backup question... when I use MyBackup Pro, I know I can make an archive of the apps I've installed, and an archive of the data (documents, music, settings). Is a nandroid backup different from that? when I see the backup/restore options inside of 4ext Recovery, what are those doing that's different from what I get from MyBackup Pro?
thanks for all the help and encouragement. I have a new ROM installed! :good:

Oooh, a possibility. We will see if he can boot a different rom.
Whenever you switch roms (even if they are using the same Android version as a base) I suggest a full wipe. (Wipe all user data + Dalvik Cache + Cache, or just flash the superwipe zip). When upgrading the rom you are currently on (say upgrading CM Nightlies or going from Mimicry 1.1.1 to 1.1.2) you only need to really wipe cache and dalvik cache. Unless the dev states otherwise of course.
Hi strawmetal,
It turns out that I did have s-off after all...
1. after one of the many attempts to flash the ROM image and restoring back to stock Froyo, I said that "I'm gonna start this entire process over to be sure." So I get stuck using the fre3vo tool for about 30 minutes, rebooting and trying different address ranges to find the exploit.
Never found one... oh no, what did I do to the phone now??
-then it hit me; if it can't find an exploit... then it must already been used!
2. also, I did check each time I was in bootloader that my S-OFF was there and the radio and hboot were not changing versions.
3. Hehe, and the best indication was... being able to boot up finally!
I also have your Strawmetal.CM.V6.zip on my sdcard; if the downflash (?) to the Andromadus older ROM didn't work, yours was the CM7 image I wanted to try. If it's ok, I think I want to play around inside CM9 for a bit and then try yours out after that. I don't want to overwhelm my poor brain!
thank you for your suggestion... that definitely would be something to check as well.

The bootloader can show a false s-off. I've personally experienced this. By the time "HTCDev bootloader unlock" came out i was already rooted. But as curious as I was I decided to try it out. Flashed an RUU ( my my why would I do that ) Got back s-on( guess this was false too) then I used HTCDev method to prove i'm a total noob. Then i relocked it using Nipqer's guide and followed setherio's method again. I was able to use the stock froyo, but no other rom would boot( false s-off being the culprit ). This time I ran to #g2root on freenode. Nipqer saved me.
WOW. i just realized there is SO MUCH I need to catch up on!
I'll have to look up some of these guides later today... but the RUU is the ROM upgrade, right?
Did you ever find a reason why you got the false S-OFF flag? It's clear that the way I was looking at the failed fre3vo exploit as proof of S-OFF isn't always going to be true... but how would you separate a false S-OFF flag from lets say a wrong hboot image?
BTW, your PDF on downgrading and rooting the G2 was a godsend. Very very helpful and clear.
One of the reasons why I took so long to try rooting was that I was confused by the different methods and the replies of X not working, Y is a better way... going through your guide and the info here on xda cleared alot of things up. :good:

I have unbricked this phone probably 15 times in the past day trying to just install a custom ROM.
I run through the unbricking process, get root, load the stock AT&T ROM, factory reset, and it boots just fine from there. However, after I load Clockwork Mod and try to load any custom ROMs at all, the phone will just bootloop forever. It also appears to remove the Clockwork Mod recovery image as well, since I no longer am able to get back into recovery after the flash of the new ROM.
I've scoured this forum for hours, and I'm at a complete loss. Any ideas?
P.S. I made a backup of my ROM before doing all of this using the latest version of Clockwork Mod, but was unable to restore it. It seems that the 6.x.x.x version of the recovery for this phone is busted in some way, it always reports that it can't access any of the root folders, even though the phone has been rooted. The 5.x.x.x versions don't seem to do this, but I still have issues flashing.

Is it possible that your hosts file needs modifying when installing the AT&T ROM? If the LG Support tool connects to LG's servers instead of your local http you set up, it will load the official ICS and completely wipe your phone to install that ROM... With my limited amount of knowledge, that's about all I could see if the process removes CWM Recovery.
Also, CWM 6.x is working fine for me, even manually flashed the touch recovery a few minutes ago, backed up my ROM and installed an updated ROM. No problems at all.

I don't know if anyone has tried the unbrick method with the new version of cwm but you might try twrp. When a similar version of cwm was in beta there were all sorts of issues. So maybe they haven't been fixed. Also are you installing cwm from GB? ICS has a locked boot loader so that might also be an issue.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1888910
Now I would start with the unbricking guide for a 16th time but follow the directions to install twrp instead of cwm. You might also find you like it better. Good luck.

I don't believe that the unbricking process would work if the hosts file was wrong, but I checked it again anyway, and it appears to be correct.
The AT&T ROM gets pushed via the abd shell after the unbrick and rooting process. The root appears to work, as the AT&T ROM that I push works fine, it's just not the ROM I want!

After the unbricking process (after I get through all the nonsense on the Korean ROM), the phone is running the GB AT&T ROM, from there I push the CWM recovery.img to the phone using the abd shell. All seems to be working perfectly up until I go to flash the custom ROM! I don't get any errors when I flash the .zip either.
Initially I had installed CWM 6.x.x.x using the ROM Manager application. That's before all this nonsense started, and the phone was on the stock (but rooted) AT&T ICS ROM, so I know that's why I "bricked" my phone the first time.
I'll give TWRP a shot, hopefully that will work.

Ok so we know it's not the boot loader issue of ICS after dozens if not hundreds of successful installs using the unbricking guide the only thing left is the new version of cwm. Hopefully twrp will do the trick for you. Has anyone out there successfully completed the unbricking guide with the new version of cwm?

I haven't tried the TWRP recovery a shot yet, since I haven't been home, but I figured it was worth pointing out that the CWM 5.x.x.x (can't remember exact version numbers right now) didn't work for me either. Every time I flashed a ROM, I'd end up with a boot loop on first boot, and then when I'd try to go back into recovery, I'd find that it wouldn't go back in there either.
It was basically acting like when I flashed the ROM that it overwrote the recovery partition, except no one else seems to have this same issue. Yet, if I didn't flash a ROM, I was able to go in and out of CWM recovery as often as I wanted.
Bah.

Can you clarify exactly what method you are using to flash the ROM? I just can't imagine a scenario where flashing a ROM would overwrite the recovery. What ROM are you flashing?
Also, please confirm what phone you have.

Sure, I may be using the wrong term (my first experiences with custom ROMs date back to Windows Mobile, so the terminology probably blends together), but I'm basically loading the .zip from the SD Card in CWM. I've tried both the CM9 P930 ROM and Paranoid Android CM10.
That was my thought too, I didn't think that the custom ROMs even had recovery images in them. I may be wrong in saying that it deletes CWM, but after the wipe and flash I am no longer able to access it.
I have the LG Nitro HD, and from what I can gather, that is the P930, correct? I hope the issue I'm having is as simple as I'm flashing for the wrong phone...
By the way, thank you all for your help and input, I really appreciate it!

You are correct, the Nitro is P930. And I'm sure this doesn't need pointing out, but when you download the ROM, make sure it's for P93x and not SU640. Most of the ROMS in the developer section have versions for both models.
Also, when you say you can't access CWM after flashing a ROM, how are you trying to access it? Holding Power+Volume down until the Factory Reset screen pops up? It still shows that screen even with CWM installed, but when you press the power button to perform the factory reset it SHOULD take you into CWM Recovery instead.

To access recovery, turn the device completely off. (If you're in a bootloop, pull battery or hold power button for ~20 seconds until screen stays off.) Then when phone is off, press and hold volume down and power buttons at the same time, not releasing until you see text asking if you want to factory reset. Press power button twice to confirm and you'll get to recovery.
Is this the method you're using to try to get to CWM?
My guess as to why you are getting bootloops is that you aren't wiping data first.
Yup, that's how I'm accessing CWM. After the flash, after I press the power button twice, I get something similar to a boot loop. A recovery boot loop, if you will.
Well, I've tried a couple ways now. I've tried using the "factory reset/wipe user data" menu item in CWM, and I've tried going into each partition and wiping them individually before flashing as well.
Just got home, I'll try flashing using the TWRP and let you guys know.

Good luck. Other possible things to try:
1) Check zip MD5 hash (or just redownload and replace) to make sure it's not corrupted.
2) Reformat entire SD card.
Interesting update:
I decided to give getting back into CWM recovery one more shot before I went through the process of re-unbricking again, and this time it managed to get in (for whatever reason).
So, I did a factory wipe, cleared dalvik cache, flashed the ParanoidAndroid ROM, backed out, did another factory wipe, and tried to reboot into the newly flashed ROM.
No luck. Boot looped, and didn't even get to the ROM animation. Following that, I had trouble getting back into the CWM recovery. Managed to try about 5 times and finally got in, however CWM stated:
Code:
CWM-based Recovery v5.0.2.7
E:Error in /cache/recovery/last_log
(Read-only file system)
So... my phone may have potentially unrooted it's self, somehow... Interestingly, it still shows the file systems as mounted.
So, now I'm doing a full SD card reformat. Figured I'd get that variable out of the way before I go any further.

You are installing the wrong version of CWM. Never use anything older than 5.8.2.0. This is the one you want: http://download2.clockworkmod.com/recoveries/recovery-clockwork-5.8.2.0-p930.img
Anything older than that is known to not work.
Second thing: You seem to have an incorrect understanding of what "root" means. Having "root" simply means you have administrator access to your current ROM. When you install a new ROM, whether you had root access to your old ROM is meaningless frankly.

Ah, thank you! I must've been viewing an old thread. Now that I look at the version number, it appears that's the version I had been hunting for since the newest one didn't work.
Interesting, I most certainly misunderstood, I was under the impression that "rooting" the device was a filesystem level permission change. Good to know!
It seems like we are getting closer to a solution here. Thanks for your patience!
Well, that appears to have been my problem the whole time! That's kind of embarrassing, considering how much time I sunk into this and how simple the solution was!
Anyway, thank you all very much! I assume that TWRP would have also solved my problems as well. It would seem that both the older and newest versions of CWM have some problems (at least for me!).

Yeah, the new one (6.0.1.5) just came out. I'll have to test it to see if it works for me.
For what it's worth, I haven't had any issues with 6.0.1.5 yet. The touch version is a must, though.

I really enjoy the integration Rom Manager/CM Updater has with CWM. If twrp is capable of running the install scripts those two use, I might consider trying it out, but I don't really like manually going through the steps to flash a rom every day.
A strange predicament indeed. Two identical SPH-L710 phones, both came packaged running 4.1.2 build MD4 and, using this toolkit, I was able to successfully root, flash TWRP recovery and proceed to flash a custom ROM with no issues...at least to one of the phones.
My problems began with the second device. I was able to successfully root and flash recovery (TWRP or CWM) here as well. I question the success of the recovery flash due to the picture as indicated where I get numerous 'unable to...' everything. I might also add that on recovery entry TWRP asks for a password. I am not bricked as I can boot normally into the OS and use the rooted phone. I feel like I have tried everything I could find on this forum as well as several other sites to no avail. I have downgraded to 4.1.1 build LJ7 with the exact same results. I have repartitioned as well. Right now the second device is running build LJ7 since I have come to a screeching halt until I find more things to flash and hack away at this stubborn thing!
This is by no means my first bout with the Android platform, but if anyone can give me a pointer or two to set me on the right path, I will gladly hand out some thank yous!!
I had the same issue on mine. Dropping back to TWRP 2.3.1 solved it for me. Some L-710s just seem to not like the updated version.

You can try Flash Image GUI from the Play Store. Or maybe even Rom Manager. Then Uninstall it when you are done.

ROM Manager was something I tried as a last resort as well, it flashed the custom recovery alright, but soft bricked it with a redundant recovery bootloop. I got past that by Odin-ing back to stock.
Odd. I've used the Toolkit you mentioned in your OP. Also the other methods to install a Recovery. Did you manage to Root again, and install a Recovery ?

Yes, I can easily root every time with Mark's toolkit as well as install a recovery, but I always get the 'unable to mount...' message when I attempt to do anything and it will not recognize neither the internal nor the external sdcard.

UPDATE: Still in the same boat even after flashing all the way back to TWRP 2.2.2.0. Recovery can't find or mount anything!
Although I'm not sure why (since I used the same methods and the same toolkit on both phones), I have a feeling that the internal memory and/or partitions somehow got corrupted. The only thing I haven't tried is using Odin to repartition and reflash everything including the bootloader. Hopefully someone has posted the files for us!

I tried formatting the sdcard as well as without the sdcard and even with a different one to no avail. I'm still on the hunt for pda, csc, etc. Odin files. My last resort will be to figure out how to get it replaced at Sprint as a defective device lol

Have you tried using stock recovery? obviously not to flash anything but just to try and navigate the sd or wipe the cache for example. Just curious if the mounting issues are present in all recoveries or just twrp/cwm. Also a bit intrigued by the fact that the phone still boots and operates normally

Yes, stock recovery allows clearing of cache, depending on whose stock recovery I flash. If I flash the toolkit version of stock, I can clear no problems. There are a couple of other stock recoveries, such as this one, in which everything fails as well.
FYI, I have even flashed the stock builds you have on sxtp with the same results.
Thanks for this -- you solved my problem...at least mostly.
I tried to root a new Sprint SG3 by ODIN'ing CWM and then flashing a root.zip file. That epic failed just like your situation where nothing would mount in recovery whether I used CWM or TWRP. I am assuming that something must've changed on the Sprint S3's and that root method must not work anymore (for whatever reason). So I decided to go back to stock recovery and just wait and see if anything further is discovered about this here (I'm not a dev, so I have to wait for other more talented people to solve my problems). However, the stock recovery image that I downloaded from the same "Easy Root" tutorial here didn't work and I still couldn't mount anything.
Saw your post where you stated that the Toolkit stock recovery image worked, so I just tried that and score! However...my poor little recovery android is on his back with a red triangle and a "!". Everything mounts, I can wipe cache, browse around for an update, etc., but I'm a little concerned that my little Android is sick. Should I be? Is that because I have a flash count of 5 so it thinks I have a custom ROM?
Sorry to hijack your thread a little, but my problems seems to be related.

Thanks guys, it is comforting to know I'm not the only poor soul stuck in this rut! I'm pretty sure I have exhausted all flashing resources out there at this point, but I'm eager to try whatever new that has potential of working that anyone cares to conjure up.
One strange thing I have also noticed on the problematic phone is that the signal is significantly weaker than my phone, even when both were at stock. It is always dropping calls and/or going into roaming, etc. I haven't been able to produce a log of any sort as they won't write since recovery cannot mount ANYTHING! Lol

Folks, A quick search would have led ya here : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2183910&page=4 This is a known issue with both TWRP and CWM recoveries on newer S3's. Devs are working on it to find a solution. Just a matter of being patient and waiting. IF you just want root access, you can odin a pre-rooted rom to the phone with no issues. You'll atleast have root at that point. Just unable to change rom/kernels on the fly.
I achieved root with virtually no issues but thank you for the link!
