Has anyone tried it?
I have only just picked up my KF8.9, but have successfully rooted it. However, chickened out of installing the 2ndBootloader and TWRP as it seems that some people say it still works and some people say it doesn't.
Don't want to brick my shiny new toy, and don't know enough about these devices to know if the existing guide (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2128175) is still correct for 8.4.3.
Any info appreciated.
Thanks
:good: I would like to know this also
If trying to accomplish this under Windows, the key is to have the proper USB driver for your device installed AND ADB communication working. Once I managed to confirm this, I used KF First Aide to install the 2nd bootloader + TWRP under 8.4.3 without any issues.

How did you confirm that you had the proper USB driver installed?
Currently with the drivers I have:
I can see my Kindle in Windows explorer
I can see my device as an "ADB Device"
When the Kindle is off I can type "fastboot -i 0x1949 getvar product" to put my device into Fastboot
Is that about it?
Thanks again.

ADB is working just fine for me under 8.4.3 but each and every time I attempt to install the 2nd bootloader and TWRP it red screens on me. Could you tell me the steps you followed with KF First Aide in order to get it to work? I can't seem to find information here at all.
Thanks,

You can install the proper USB drivers with option 12. in KFF, or manually by following instructions described here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2069117
You can also check ADB communication with option 11. in KFF. If a device ID is displayed, you are in business.

I simply used option 41. in KFF. You need to be rooted first, use option 21. in KFF to do this. You may be prompted to manually grant permission to SU on your Kindle, so don't just run this and leave the tablet alone to go for a cup of coffee...

to fix it i used a homemade factory/fastboot cable turned off the kindle and used option "25. Restore The Kindle From The KindleBackup Folder" then plugged in the kindle to the pc and said yes only to the boot partition one and it booted up fine. You would have to have made a backup to your pc first.

KFHD8.9
OS 8.4.3
Rooted w/ Bin4ry v30
Android SDK installed in Win7 PC; ADB communication working fine with Kindle
ADB and Fastboot were working fine per KFFirstAide
executed KFFirstAide option 41... Kindle went into Fastboot mode and then rebooted into Red Screen.
Any ideas on next steps?

I didn't have the Android SDK installed, as I used the ADB drivers provided through KFF. Perhaps going back to 8.4.1 (from backed-up .img files) or an earlier version and start from there?

I used the Kindle FIre Utility that was stickied to install ClockworkMod. Unfortunately, the utility gives an error message when I attempted to root or install FFF or really do anything else. However, I was able to boot into CWM using the utility. I remember from my experience with ROMs on the Samsung Captivate (AT&T) that installing new ROMs would overwrite things like being unrooted or even recovery mode itself. So I downloaded the zip of Alien Droid and flashed it using ClockworkMod. I wiped data and cache and dalvik cache. I then rebooted the device to find it bootlooping on the Alien Droid logo. So I plug it back into the computer, the computer recognizes the ADB interface as "Android." However, Kindle Fire Utility does not recognize the device anymore since it is not known as "kindle" or at least that's what I seemed to gather. So It's stuck bootlooping for now and I'm not sure how to get it out of the boot loop or how to get back to stock. Anybody have any pointers?

The version that came with the Kindle Fire Utility I linked above. I'm not sure what number it is, but it allowed for touch functions and was black with red text.

I did do a factory reset. I accidentally mentioned in the post that I wiped data, but what I meant was factory reset. The kindle still shows up in the computer when I plug it in, so I feel like there is some hope.

Even while bootlooping, you should still be able to issue adb commands, check your drivers. Also, the Alien Droid animation takes a really long time the first time around. How long did you let it sit before shutting it off?

This is true. Although I don't know much about how to operate adb, I do have it installed. I waited an hour or two, the animation stops at some point and freezes but the usb connection still works.

I don't currently have TWRP installed on the kindle, just clockworkmod. I will try to install TWRP from adb and see what I can do.
EDIT: While my computer detects the kindle as an "Android ADB Interface" when I type "adb devices" into cmd nothing shows when the kindle is plugged in (but my phone shows when it's plugged in with USB debugging enabled, so I know I have it installed properly at least). I think the proper drivers are not installed.
EDIT 2: I uninstalled the driver for it to install the google usb driver but it failed to install the new one. Now when I plug the Kindle in it shows up as an empty Removable device in Computer butt does not show up anywhere else.

"Android ADB Interface" usually appears in the device manager when the KF is in fastboot mode, but if you are seeing the boot animation from the ROM, it cannot be in fastboot mode. I'm not sure where your KF is in the boot process, so it's important to figure that out first. Take a look at this fastboot guide...

I installed the drivers and now the Kindle is detected by adb when I type adb devices. ADB tells me it is in normal boot mode (4000). However, I cannot switch to ffastboot. It tells me it cannot find the drive specified and that permission is denied.
FFF, assuming you installed it, goes into temporary fastboot for the first few seconds the the bootloader is running. Use that time to do what you need to do in fastboot. When the device detects you are trying to do something in fastboot during this time, it will stop the countdown and stay in fastboot.

The device has to be in fastboot mode to show up via fastboot.exe
Regarding your issues flashing the bootloader/TWRP, try using FireFlash, an apk that automates the process of flashing the exploitable bootloader and TWRP, using the freedom boot.img and TWRP files from the thread you mentioned in your post They can be anywhere on the device storage.
Stick the FireFlash apk on the device storage, install it with ES File Manager, plug in the freedom boot.img into the boot slot and the TWRP img into the recovery slot, check the box to flash 8.1.4 bootloader if you aren't already using it (red letters will warn you if you aren't) and check apply stack override. also check disable auto recovery update. execute the flash, and you're done. You can also use FireFlash to easily update TWRP later on if you like.

My point is that it is crucial to have proper drivers present and working BEFORE you even get into fastboot mode.
I would recommend you go back and re-read Hashcode's thread. Back up your system files before modifying anything, so you can go back if anything goes wrong.

but if something goes wrong, without the fastboot mode you can not recover anything the same right?
Surely my mistake was not to test the fastboot. Why can not I work in the device?? for drivers?
I think my kindle volume button is broken. Every time I reboot the device it always enter safe mode.
I reflash the device to stock but the problem still appear, now I want to back to custom rom but I cannot get in to TWRP (the volume up button not working) so I stuck at blue logo.
Fastboot and ADB still working.
Is there any way to install CM10.1 using fastboot/adb only without TWRP?
You can still get into twrp without using volume button, you just need to run adb on your PC with your kindle connected and adb enabled as follows:
adb reboot recovery
Or try
adb shell "su -c 'reboot recovery'"
If it is the second one u can run it from a mobile terminal app on the kindle, just take off the adb shell part.
Once you have cm installed I know for a fact you can reboot into recovery from the shutdown menu, but u have to enabled developer stuff on cm after u flash it. You can tell I'm half asleep when I can't remember the proper term and say "stuff"... Anyways if you want feel free to try what I suggested or search around for what I suggested. I am going to bed.

TWRP problem
Hello people
First of all thanks Hashcode for putting so much effort into it
I ran into a little bit of problem
First off regarding the BLUE LOGO
I first get ORANGE then BLUE n then ORANGE again with the animation
Second regarding TWRP
I can't seem to get into recovery while pressing the volume up button
It gives me a bad boot kinda error n then takes me to Fastboot mode
I hope you guys can help me out with this
Thanks
EDIT
Thanks to the above post i was able to enter recovery
Now it gives me two options
1 reboot kindle
2 reset to factory defaults
Question : How do i install CM 10.1 from there
You apparently didn't follow the instructions in the 2nd bootloader thread very well because you seem to have skipped a step.
To further explain what soupmagnet means, you didn't flash twrp to your recovery, that's the stock amazon recovery and is completely useless.

Introducing: Kindle Fire 2 (v10.4.3 & v10.4.6 already tested) installing CyanogenMod
** YOU SHOULD HAVE A WORKING NORMAL (NOT FASTBOOT) CABLE + ADB DRIVERS/ACCESS ON YOUR PC. **
*** USE AT YOUR OWN RISK! WHILE I TRY MY BEST TO PROVIDE WORKING KERNELS/ROMS, I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE IF THIS SOFTWARE OR ANYTHING I'VE WORKED ON SUDDENLY FRIES YOUR DEVICE. ***
*** READ CAREFULLY BEFORE DOING ANYTHING ***
*** Kindle Fire 1st-gen ROMs/KERNELS are *NOT* compatible with the Kindle Fire 2. Please only flash ROMs/KERNELS that are made for the Kindle Fire 2. ***
** IF YOU HAVE QUESTIONS, RE-READ THROUGH THE THREAD FOR ANSWERS. WHEN YOU'RE ABSOLUTELY SURE NO ONE HAS ASKED YOUR QUESTION, GO AHEAD AND RE-READ THE THREAD AGAIN AND USE THE SEARCH FEATURE. THEN POST YOUR QUESTION IF YOU STILL CAN'T FIND THE ANSWER **
INITIAL SETUP INSTRUCTIONS
STEP 1. Install ADB Drivers for Kindle HD and enable ADB on tablet Settings->Security->Enable ADB->On
Check ADB:
Code:
C:\> adb devices
List of devices attached
0123456789ABCDEF device
If you do NOT see this, then make sure you have the SDK installed correctly and you have the right setup for ADB on your PC before proceeding.
STEP 2. Backup your stock partitions to your own HD for later if you need disaster recovery:
Code:
adb pull /dev/block/mmcblk0boot0
adb pull /dev/block/platform/omap/omap_hsmmc.1/by-name/boot
adb pull /dev/block/platform/omap/omap_hsmmc.1/by-name/recovery
adb pull /dev/block/platform/omap/omap_hsmmc.1/by-name/system # This will take a few minutes
Take those files and put them somewhere safe.
STEP 3. Getting root
Just follow this threat http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2075959 -> everything working fine
STEP 4. Downgrade your bootloader
Download the older 10.2.4 bootloader file and flash to your device via fastboot:
http://goo.im/devs/Hashcode/otter2/otter2-u-boot-prod-10.2.4.bin
md5sum 5b03a7b428325de8d360ec201a745498
(You SHOULD check this before using fastboot -- downloads CAN be corrupted)
Open cmd and promt:
Code:
adb shell su -c "reboot bootloader"
Your Kindle should reboot in fastboot mode, and now flash bootloader:
Code:
fastboot -i 0x1949 flash bootloader otter2-u-boot-prod-10.2.4.bin
fastboot -i 0x1949 reboot
STEP 5. Install TWRP
First, download CM and GAPPS and copy it to SDCARD:
CM-10.1 for the Kindle Fire 2 (choose the latest version from):
http://www.get.cm/?device=otter2
Google Apps from: http://goo.im/gapps (choose the top rom CM10.1 version)
1. Copy com.powerpoint45.FMKilo-2.apk to the tablet (you can get this apk from here http://d-h.st/n7L)
2. Enable on Kindle: Device -> Allow Installation of Applications
3. Use file browser (i recomended to use ES Explorer) to install apk.
4. Run Tweezermod Installer and answer on all question about Super User -> "Allow"
** If everything was done correctly you will at this point see the bootmenu with a BLUE logo during the reboot. **
In this time your kindle can not boot, u'll see BLUE logo, then ORANGE and then device restarted again. Don't worry - it's ok
STEP 6. Install CyanogenMod
TO ENTER RECOVERY:
During the blue logo screen press the power button to cycle through options and select "Recovery" to enter TWRP.
Once in TWRP you can Install" the CM-10.1 by selecting "Install" and then browsing the device and selecting it, then "Add Zip" and select the Gapps .zip as well.
Use the slider to start the install.
Dont forget to do FULL WIPE - cache, dalvik cache, factory reset, system.
Enjoy
Tested on my Kindle Fire 2 v10.4.3 & v10.4.6
7" KF HD 2, 10.4.6
This tutorial worked perfectly, up until the end, step 6.
I'm new to Kindle, but not Android. I got into TWRP prior to downloading CM10.2 and Gapps. And when i try to mount as USB, and this line shows in the log:
"Unable to locate volume information for USB storage mode"
Googling didn't help much with investigating that error. ADB sideload doesn't seem to work.
I don't know what to do from here.

Also in my Device Manager, Portable Devices, it shows F: but there's no F: in my windows explorer.
I found instructions via terminal emulator to get it rebooted into fastboot, in hopes of flashing CM 10.2 via fastboot.
Looking up the fastboot syntax for flashing a new rom, I've always used recovery on my other devices, but i don't have that option now.

ADB Sideload - good idea. Try this manual:
1. Set the device into ADB sideload mode. In TWRP you do this by going to Advanced then ADB Sideload.
2. From the command line on PC, type adb sideload /path/to/rom.zip
The file will be copied to your device to whatever the current storage location is that you have selected in the mount page. It will always be placed in the root of that storage location and named sideload.zip (e.g. /sdcard/sideload.zip) and it will automatically delete / overwrite any existing sideload.zip you may have on your device. As soon as the file is copied to your device, it will automatically be installed. When the install is finished you will be presented with a reboot system button so that you can reboot to test your zip.
Note that sideload mode is a separate ADB mode. While in sideload mode, regular ADB commands will not work. Once the zip has been copied to the device and the install starts (or if you hit the cancel button) regular ADB mode will resume.
My mistake in manual. Better way - copy rom file to sdcard before STEP 5.
I'm still unable to use adb sideload, reports "device not found". I have the usb drivers installed, your tutorial is the only one I have used, I can't use TWRP at all.
It works, but USB drive mounting doesn't work, ADB sideload doesn't seem to work. No errors in the log, but ADB reports device not found.
I don't know what to do from here. It's nothing like 4EXT or CWM.
Ok so I have got it in fastboot by going to Advanced->Terminal, idme bootmode 4
Once in fastboot , fastboot -i 0x1949 devices returned a device number
I flashed CM10.2 using "fastboot -i 0x1949 flash system CM102.zip
Then I ran fastboot -i 0x1949 oem idme bootmode 1
Then rebooted, doesn't load ROM, got back into TWRP, changed bootmode back to 1, reboot, says I have no OS.
That's my current status. Seems others have been at this point before, still workin on this.
Ok you can give up on thinking now, I've bricked it. No signs of life.
I flashed the 7.23 bootloader and TWRP 2.6 from: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2128848
via fastboot, and now it's done for.
Found a rooted one on craigslist for $120 to replace this one for my father in law.
I've rooted a good few other Android devices, but never a tablet, first try on a KFHD2.
I give up on Kindle's.

Don't trash the old one after u get the new one, we have a viable method now to unbrick a hard bricked kindle. The person behind the fix is working on a more user friendly version of the device that doesn't require soldering. Check it out: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2391047

Assuming you have a Kindle Fire 2nd Generation, it's "hard-bricked."
Read the FAQ if you haven't already, specifically Q14 (although, read them all). Then, I would see if you can get Amazon to send you a replacement.
If they won't do that, take a look at this thread and this thread by me. As of now, I've succeeded in returning a hard-bricked KF2 to soft-bricked, but working out some bugs in order to return it to fully functional after that.

I've followed the linked guide to installing the sdk and driver (windows 7 64 bit) and I still cannot get the adb devices to list the kf2. What am I doing wrong?

Hello,
I am attempting to install CyanogenMod on a Kindle Fire HD 8.9". It appears the Fire OS received the recent OTA update to 8.5.1.
Whenever I attempt to root it using the restore exploit used in KFFirstAide or Bin4ry, the device will reboot into a state in which it is nearly unusable. It takes ~2 minutes just to get to the carousel screen from the lock screen. A reset to factory settings fixes this, and I have done this a two times thus far. I tried an application on my PC called Kingo Root to root it, and it does not cause the device to act strangely and slowly, but I do not have access to su. Beyond this, I am unable to access Fastboot. Fastboot just says <Waiting for device> whenever I start my device after using the fastboot -i 0x1949 getvar product or any other Fastboot command. I believe I have installed the drivers properly, and the ADB works fine.
What other information should I provide? Are there any steps I could/should try?
Thanks!
When i installed cm11 i had this same problem immediately after root. Once i installed cm11 it went away. Not sure why but i hope this helps. If you are keeping the Amazon os i don't have a good solution
Well, I was able to get into Fastboot and install TWRP. Now the tablet will not let me push the CyanogenMod ZIP to the internal storage.
Any ideas? ADB sideload refuses to load in TWRP and ADB says no devices are connected.
Uninstall the drivers in the device manager and let it reinstall the drivers, then adb should work.
I love it if this guy gets it working, teamwork ftw!

i'm stuck with the 5.8.1 (my fault i would to try i lost my root) .
Anyone found solution to root this rom ?
i tried a lot of old tools, but no luck....
thank you
Same problem here, I have lost root with 8.5.1 update, old root methods don't work.
Update!
Hi everyone!
I gave up on trying to root and decided to just get the ROM flashed via TWRP (which can be done without root).
So I installed the drivers from here after disabling driver signature enforcement: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=44446906&postcount=9
Now, I am in TWRP.... But I did not transfer the CyanogenMod ZIP to my device. Now I am stuck trying to get ADB sideload to work so I may push the zip to the device. No success thus far. I cannot get the sideload to work, though. The Kindle will not connect to the PC for ADB (no yellow triangles in Device Manager, nothing) and I cannot get into the original OS... So, I am stuck.
Any ideas now?

I am not an expert, but I understand that before install twrp, second bootloader and a custom rom in a Kindle Fire Hd 8.9, you need to be ROOTED. In all the guides to be rooted is a must step, maybe that is where begin all your problems...

I too tried to root I was able to get fast boot working but had to reapply my driver in settings. I have the LTE variant and thus need a working root solution. Does anyone know a method to achieve root without the slowness?
no root this sucks
I was able to root where the device is slow then use adb commands to get the device into fast mode from there you can follow the tutorial that helps you get a second boot loader.
Once you have root and the device is connected over adb then use the command adb shell then run reboot bootloader.
Can you please share your rooting instrcutions from the Amazon OS 8.5.1?
I'm on 8.5.1 and tried all methods of the rooting, but failed all.
Many thanks.

I used Root_with_Restore_by_Bin4ry_v36 with option 3. Once complete device is basically unusable but you can still connect over ADB and you do have root. I then followed http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2277105 for installing a different boot loader. I didn't follow it exactly as I again opened an ADB shell then ran the commands as I was getting an error if I just ran them as is. If you open a shell you only run the command in "" without the quotes. Once complete you can then flash to cm11 or another ROM of your choosing.

http://forum.xda-developers.com/kindle-fire-hd/8-9-inch-help/success-rooting-8-5-1-t2943620
So i been trying to find the answer to my issue everywhere. everything i try fails.
So basically my Kindle fire hd 8.9 is in a constant boot loop. it goes from orange w/animation, then blue w/animation... then after a period of time it says that it cant boot gives me option to factory restore (which does nothing).
when i have it hooked up to a computer, it connects for 1 second, then quickly disconnects. In device manager it comes up as "jem-pvt-prod-04" with the yellow "!". i even tried to use the amazon drivers from another post on xda, in that split second it would appear in device manager, i would update device and point it to the driver. then i will get an error saying it encountered an error installing Android ADB interface. problem encountered while trying to add driver.
Does anyone have any tips for me. im kinda stuck here and desperate with a very expensive paperweight. very upsetting!
I never tried to root, or mod this kindle fire. this problem happened on its own. or possibly after an update of some sort.
thanks guys.

You're not hopelessly bricked if your Kindle still boots to the orange logo.
Might I ask what Windows version you're using? Newer versions enforce driver signatures, and that enforcement will cause failed installations in Windows 8+ unless you disable the enforcement before installing the drivers. I would also suggest installing ADB and fastboot if you haven't already done so. (Use the 15 second ADB installer - it's on XDA, and it works wonders!)

Yes, actually i am using windows 10. My thinkpad has windows 7, so i will try to do this using windows 7. i will post back with results. its funny, out of everywhere i looked nobody mentioned windows 8+ having to disable enforcement. actually it will probably just be easier just to disable the enforcement. ill give it a try and report back.

Completely turn off the kindle and unplug it from your PC if it's connected. Open Command Prompt and type fastboot -i 0x1949 getvar product. Plug in the kindle when you see <waiting for device> outputted. The kindle should now boot into fastboot mode, from which point you can reflash the bootloader, TWRP, and the freedom-boot image in Hashcode's thread.

ok so im in fastboot mode now. i checked out that thread that you sent. but i have another problem, how am i supposed to get cm and gapps onto the kindle? is there a command i can use to put the files on the internal sd card? and i cant do the adb commands to push the stack, and do the other commands adb since i couldnt get it loaded to begin with, i am not able to enable developer mode. it would be nice if i could do those commands in fastboot mode. there has to be a way to do this....
maybe if someone can send me the stock partitions that they backed up stock boot partititons when they did it. maybe if i flashed them onto my kindle it will allow me to get it to atleast boot up so i can get into adb.
right now this is completely bricked.
can anyone help me? i just need the original boot loader, boot, recovery... basically whatever was backed up before you flashed it.
i aam looking for the original because i know mine was corrupt to begin with. my theory is if i load the original boot loaders and everything then maybe i can get into the kindle just so i can run the abd commands and then put cyanogenmod on it. unless someone has a suggestion on how i can get my device to be detected by adb ? the furthest i can get into is fastboot.

Once you're in fastboot, you should run these fastboot commands (most of which I ripped from Hashcode's thread) to flash the bootloader, etc.:
fastboot -i 0x1949 flash bootloader kfhd8-u-boot-prod-8.1.4.bin
fastboot -i 0x1949 flash boot kfhd8-freedom-boot-8.4.6.img
fastboot -i 0x1949 flash recovery kfhd8-twrp-2.8.7.0-recovery.img
fastboot -i 0x1949 oem recovery
after that, you should be in TWRP, from which point you can use ADB sideload (enable in TWRP through Advanced -> ADB sideload) to flash CM. After running ADB sideload, you need to re-enable it in TWRP for each subsequent zip you want to flash.

It sounds like you've got a newer bootloader that's been patched. Go ahead and download the files from Hashcode's thread, and type in all of the commands exactly as given in step 5. Those should fix the red screen issue and allow you to boot normally (or into TWRP, from which point you can ADB sideload CM).

no, i wish i did. the whole reason i started trying this was because the kindle was in a bootloop without even trying to flash it. it would go from kindlefire (orange) then blue, then it will ask me to do factory reset. and nomatter what i did i would keep going in the same bootloop.
so i turned to here for help, and following instructions now i am in this situation.
unfortunatley since i wasnt able to get into the kindle, i was never able to do any abd backups. so i just took my chances with it.
i was actually originally asking if anyone had the original files they can send me so i can try to flash those. atleast i can get it up and running because i really have a feeling this isnt working because i need to push the stack file over thru abd first.

You should be able to separately flash the system.img, boot, and recovery from this tool via fastboot. It's stock OS 8.1.4, but it should work.

ok, it provided me with all the files except the bootloader. i did it step by step... but it only gave me original recovery, and original boot.img but it didnt give me the bootloader (and yes it is still turning red)

anyone have any suggestions or can help me with my situation?? i am wondering if maybe someone could just send me the original backed up bootloader, boot, and recovery. i tried the original ones that were posted with that srt file. but it included everything but the bootloader. which is what i need. i know that in original thread they recommended to back up your original files (i was unable to do so because my kindle woulnt boot so i couldnt use adb to back up these files).
so if someone on here can send me the original files so i can try to get my kindle booted back up. that so far is my only theory because i tried everything else. i know people with advance knowledge would be able to help me in a heartbeat. any devs out there wanna help me out? i would greatly appreciate it!
anyone?
