I dont know if anyone else has noticed or just passed it off as a fluke thought, but I noticed a slight to moderate downgrade in cam quality with stock settings on the cam from my first white s4 to my now black s4 both .
The white one seemed way better quality like it was the true 13mp its said to be.. but my black s4 just seems shotty*
I cant compare to anyone else's in person but plan to.
Anyone compared with a buddys s4 and felt the same bizarre thoughts:what:

I know that its set to 9.6 mp stock im talking in any mpixel setting even 13mp.
Im just trying to see if anyone sees this as a real possibility of quality defect that lies between one device from another.

Almost certain you had a dirty lens. Happens everytime. Most of the time you won't notice it until you start getting crappy pics.
Watch out for case's altering pics with flash. Not sure if this is the issue but just wanted to remind
I think just like any hardware you're going to have some bad ones or in this case not as good. This isn't the first time I've seen this type of thing. I've had so many phones throughout the years and in some cases when I get a replacement the camera is not as good as the previous. I just exchange it again and hope the next one is better.
You sure you took the plastic film off the camera lens? I know, dumb question, but took me a few days to realize it was there.
How do you change 9.6 to the full 13mp?
Edit: nvmind found it havent messed much with the camera

How is the quality on everyone's front camera? The colors on mine are really washed out. When I first open up the camera application there is some color, but after a few seconds it becomes washed out. It's also quite dark, even with the exposure turned all the way up. The quality is pretty bad when compared to my brother's ipod touch front facing camera. I understand it shouldn't expect much from a 1.3 mp camera, but it should at least look as good as the ipod touch, right?
What rom are you running? Many devs have had small issues with front camera. I am running skyraider Zeus found in rom manager and mine works perfect.

Colors on my front camera are washed, but it's actually lighter than the back camera. I'm using Newt's Pyramid 1.4. I think he had some problems with the front camera on his original build. Besides being a little washed, it's actually not too bad for a 1.3mp. I'm guessing the focal range may be somewhat limited given it's generally used for video calls and not for taking landscape photos!
Sorry if this is a ridiculous question, but you don't have a screen protector over the camera do you?
Nope, no screen protector. This is really the only part of the phone I'm not happy with. (well this and not having 4g) I'm not sure if the quality was the same on the stock rom though.

isn't the front camera only 1.8mp? What exactly are you expecting out of that? (and I am honestly asking, not being an ass)

I expect it to not be completely crappy. Like I said in my OP, my brother's ipod touch ffc is A LOT better, and I don't really understand why. I'm just trying to figure out if there's something wrong with mine or if everyone else's quality is roughly the same.
Hello,
I updated my Galaxy Nexus manually with the "official" Rom, but since I got android 4.0.4 my camera does have shutter lag instead of android 4.0.2. Is this normal, or did I download the wrong Rom he he?
Thanks in advance

manually flash it. and i agree, whats the point in 0 shutter if all the pictures are going to come out not focused and not clear?
i rather have a more stable camera with better picture quality.
quality over quantity
Now that you mention it, I think my pictures are a tiny bit better on 4.0.4 (Verizon version). Might just be the placebo effect...

Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using XDA
well, if you cant complain then ill do it for you, I wouldnt mind having the lag taken away BUT this was a feature, and if the feature didnt work, then its not a feature, so when I was excited about the phone last year, and I heard it was 5mp, I was let down, but then I was sold on 0 shutter lag, now the lag is back so we might have not even talked about the camera last year like it was special.
you cant sell a 1000hp car, first in the market, then after 3 months recall them to govern the engine to 750hp and still get credit for being a ground breaking car, so why should i give any credit to nexus for doing something special with the camera.
I used the time lapse feature today, what a JOKE! you need it propped up, and put it in airplane mode so that a text wont ruin your video, the screen stays on the whole time, you cant turn it off, and the smallest increment is 1 second, i washed dishes for a couple hours and had a 3 minute video that was a pain to watch because there was a window in the room that the camera adjusted for and me the focus was all dark.
I do like the built in photo editing, and the use of facial recognition, but when i saw the nexus get demolished by the one x, i cried, and now with 4.0.4 lagging more just to be a usable 5 mp camera, i think owners have the right to complain that a front page feature has been toned down for stability. though ultimately we want better pictures.
Focus once, don't move, take pictures in a bright area = insta pics.
I take them all the time.
Could you imagine how many EXTRA complaints there would be if it never focused?

This exactly. I take a lot of pictures of moving objects (my kids). Pre 4.0.4 they were *terrible*. They were so poor I bought an Xperia S for the camera. Post 4.0.4 they are now clear and of great quality (on par with the 12MP camera in the Xperia S which is no slouch). Let it focus and snap away. Move, refocus, repeat.
If you are rubbish photographer/videographer why blame the camera?
Like - I pointed camera at a window and everything else was dark. Doh.
Actually i was very disappointed with the camera i was like 5mp bullsh... Hi Guys.
What do you guys think of the photo quality? My front camera is fine but my back camera seems to have a serious problem focusing- the front actually takes clearer pics than the back. For some reason most if not all of my pics are coming out not completely focus with whitey haze to them - even the 1080 P videos are hazy. I have checked for plastic on the back several times as well as wiped off the lens. I have had just about, and I mean literally just about every superphone in the last four years and I know what a good camera looks like, this camera does not perform like it should and I thinks its not the phone but some issue that must/can be fixed.
I have read about every review of the phone and all indications are that this phone's camera should be great and rival the EVO LTE which I also have and takes gorgeous- stunningly sharp pics. This is the same on the GS3 and that is also very highly rated. It supposed to be better than the original note which I also had and its looks the complete opposite right now. Well my EVO LTE, GS2, and original Note makes this look like a pinhhole camera. It's obviously not the camera hardware as I think it might be software related or I might even possibly have a defective unit.
I googled the issue and found an interesting forum on the GS3 which seem to explain my issue to a T. The person said it was a software issue and the camera took excellent pics when using other camera apps from the playstore. I tried that and while I see an improvement, the pics still aren't remotely up to par for a camera with this pedigree. I called the Sprint store to exchange my phone but they are all sold out and I may be lucky to get one next week. I just wanted to know if no one else experienced this since I haven't heard any complaints. Thanks in advance for the feedback as this is a real bummer.

Some have said "Change the ISO to 200"
HTC said "Go to settings / apps / camera / delete data" .. it actually seemed to make at least a little difference.
I put a new ROM on there with Android 4.3 and it seemed improved but still had the coloring issue you showed.
It seems like software could fix it, but it's hard to tell. Why are HTC replacing some of these if it can be fixed with software?

I understand people like taking photos of all kinds of stuff but why even bother taking a picture from 200 feet away in a dark room? Even if the colors looked better it seems like such a pointless photo. To each their own I guess.

Took that specifically for this post.
Almost seems that zooming in takes care of the lighting, but obviously then more pixelated.
Why is it a circle pattern too? I'm tempted to pull out the lens cover to see any different.
Was this an issue with original 4.2.1 release on other carriers?
Is this an issue on Google Play Edition?

its too dark and you are too far away. Maybe the lumia 1020 could handle that, but I doubt anything else would get a decent picture.
You could try my olympus OM-1 with manual shutter and telefoto lens... Got some great Northern lights shots with 20second shutter.
My point is that it just shouldn't be that grainy. I'm not looking to mount that shot on the wall. My GS3 AOSP would have done a lot better I feel.
Point is, camera sucks in low light. I'm not the only one having the issue.

This times 1000. People's cell phone camera expectations have gotten ridiculous over the last year or so. Want tremendous shots in any lighting situation? Go buy a DSLR, like Dark Jedi said. Simple as that. Not saying you can't be disappointed by how some shots come out, but let's be realistic. It's a cell phone.

Guys, quit flaming the OP. This is a widespread hardware defect on many Ones and there's a huge thread about it in the international forums here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2317507
If your camera shows a bright purple/pink tint in low light, it's defective. HTC is currently trying to pass this off as a software issue and will roll out an update with 4.3 to lock down the ISO and do some color balance tweaking. It'll sort of mask the problem but probably isn't an actual fix. Wait until after the update, and if it still does this (which is more than likely), complain to HTC customer service and they'll probably let you send it in for repair.
Amazing. No flash.
Sent from my HTC6500LVW using xda app-developers app
I think one problem with the OP picture is that from what I can tell, the only lights in the place are those on stage. However, all off those are colored lights. No natural, white light. I think that is one of the biggest reasons for the tint.

Have you tried using HDR or Night mode? HDR is supposedly better for low and high light environments.
Go to the camera image adjustments, and try changing the exposure next time. You are taking a photo in a dark room where the lighting is illuminating only part of the photo. The camera's light sensor can't tell what to do for the light source.

I disagree about the GS3. I had it and it was really not that great. At that distance and low light expect grain and probably some strange colors if you are asking it to recognize strange lighting. Not sure if the purple tint is due to the lighting in the room or some other issue though. Photography is all about light whether you use the camera on the phone or a top of the line DSLR....still about the light. At that distance you are just not getting enough light to the sensor. You could try the max iso setting, but not sure if that would make a difference. Otherwise, you would need to leave your shutter open for longer which in turn would cause shake.
well I think we can say this is a software bug at least and not a physical phone problem.
I *hope*
Well I took a couple of photos at night using different settings. I think the photos came out alight and don't see the complaint some has with the camera.
First one was night mode
Second one was hdr mode
So very useable camera at night just have to take the time to set it up. I am sure I could get better photos if I used the manual settings.
I know anyone who are camera nuts will say auto mode never works right like you think it should. it's just made for people who can't use the individual settings

I've also read in a couple of places that HTC is replacing phones with the issue.
Has anyone had theirs replaced? What was the process? I just hit a Verizon store, and they said they were unaware, and therefore weren't going to be replacing them.
Also, spent a half hour on the phone with HTC, of which they took me through the *yawn* rudimentary steps of clear cache and data on the Camera app, wiping cache from recovery, etc.
They said they will NOT be replacing phones, and I'd have to wait for the 4.3 update, of which the guy "knows for a fact that it will be fixed then"
Oh well..

Would you be able to post Snapchat photos from your other phones to compare? When it comes to the Pixel/XL, what makes their photos stand out is the HDR+ mode. Stock photos don't look as good without it. Maybe that's what you're seeing through Snapchat.

That makes sense because snapchat on Android doesn't actually take photos, it does a screenshot of the lens finder.
Any idea why the photo wouldn't take up the whole screen, could this be due to the camera hardware specs. This is the first Android phone I've seen do that and not sure what's causing it
