Is CONSTANTLY charging the phone bad? - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

I don't have access to computer so I'm constantly on the phone whenever I'm at Home. And that's a lot. Is it better to keep it charged 24/7 or drain battery to 0 then recharge and cycle?

Drop down to around 20% then recharge. Dont let the phone constantly drop to zero and shut off.

Unless you are calibrating, like patrao, there's no need to let it get to zero. But I'm like you, I'm on my phone a lot, and if I'm not using it, it's on the charger. So my suggestion, work, car, home, you are certainly ok keeping it on the charger. I do, and have, with every smart phone I've had.

As long as it doesn't heat up when you charge it, then you are good to go. Heat will reduce the shelf life of a battery.
Whether you charge it 2 times a day or once a week it is only capable of a certain amount of charge cycles. The frequency of charges doesn't change that.

There has been a lot of confusion about charging because of the changing battery technologies (NiCAD, NiMH, etc.). Phones use Li-ion batteries which don't have many restrictions. Many older batteries had to be charged fully then discharged fully because partially charging/discharging a battery would cause the capacity to reduce.
The only consideration for Li-ion batteries (besides not letting them get too hot) is to not let them fully discharge or stay discharged. A vast majority of hardware manufacturers will have your device shut down at ~5-10% charge so as not to damage your battery. If a Li-ion battery fully discharges (which is rare unless done deliberately), then it cannot be recharged. It's totally dead.
tl;dr: Charge early, charge often.

[Q] Battery drain application

Hi!
I'm looking for an application, that quickly kills my battery if it's low, so I can do a full charge to improve battery life.
Something, that I launch, I put my phone on the desk, have a tea meanwhile, and it's drained! Something, that turns on wifi, do some downloading, browsing, video playing, or whatever, and does it automatically without supervision. Does such app exists?
I'll second this, it'd be nice to have an app do this for me and maybe even give us some interesting stats from it?

+1 If you had been reading around...you would know Lithium Ion batteries are designed to 'maximize' their efficiency within about two weeks of 'top up' charging. Cycle-charging is generally considered a less efficient method of charging. You will need to 'TopUp charge' this means charging as much and as often as possible. If your battery is at 89% for instance and you find yourself near a socket, plug your adapter in and charge it up to 100%. After a few days of doing this you will notice an improvement in the life of your battery when you are not able to charge.

It is not matter of running your battery down to 0%.
It is ok to run it down till phone does to power on itself.
As you know battery is a single cell Li-Ion @ 3.7v
when it is fully charged it's peak voltage is 4.2v
By the time battery mah is drained down (galaxy s has 1500mah)
battery voltage should be around 3.2~3.4v range. this will depend on condition of the battery.
Battery should never go below 3.2v personally, 3.4v is my cut off.
If your battery voltage goes below 3.2v... it's time for a new battery as this kind of voltage will damage your battery, either it will leak or puff (battery will actually get bloated.
Phone has a voltage cut off so it will not over charge over 4.2v but if it does, it will likely start to smoke and catch fire.
I am sure anyone who is into electric Radio control knows all about these batteries.
Oh btw,,, long time storage voltage should be 3.8v
You'll be asking how do I know what voltage my battery is... I personallly don't know of any apps but GPS Status actually shows the temperature & voltage of your battery.

First, take into consideration the comments above regarding deep discharge of your battery...but, to answer your question, there's an app in the market place called 'Battery Refresh' which attempts to drain your battery quicker.
Well if it's all true above than its a good sign, and thanks for the info! I'm not an expert but in the old times I remember batteries had to discharged completely, maybe even if it's just a few times. Now somebody can also tell me why my battery is discharging when it's plugged in the socket with original charger? All I do is using the internet, and has. nimbuzz and a live wallpaper on. :S
You could probably enable the GPS/BT/WIFI ( connected to a router ) and run the interactive mode on Neocore benchmark.. that should enable most of the hardware components on the phone and stress the GPU/CPU.. probably would see a 25% battery drain for every 35-40mins.
I don't know what has changed with the batteries but as far as I know...
it is good to discharge new batteries 3~4 times down until phone does not power on.
Like I have said... it's about the voltage of the battery, not whether battery has any juice left in it or not.
These batteries have a protective circuitry so that it will not charge over 4.2v,
also as for discharge it is usually down to 3v but usually with a charger/discharger units that can control mah/volts/amps. With typical usage from the phone, it'll likely be discharged down to about 3.2`3.4v. Which is very safe.
You can do whatever you feel but I personally do this to every batteries I have for phone and every batteries I use with my radio controled cars.
For my RC cars, I have about 6 batteries ranging from 1cell to 3cell LiPo packs.
Each cell is 3.7volts.
But you don't have to force discharge and hurry the process.
Just use the phone normally and let it run down to nothing... than recharge to full peak.
Than again, choice is yours.
I'm looking for the same kind of applications. It's very useful for recalibrating your battery. Wipe the battery history then do a full cycle.

The old saying in RC Helicopters was that the difference between discharging 50% and 100% was the difference between getting 500 uses and 5 uses.
You should certainly avoid ever fully dischaging any lithium based battery.
Older nickel batteries (Ni-cd, Ni-MH) required full dischage cycles to get rid of memory the the metals pertained, lithium-ion and lithium-ion-polymer not only do not require this; but doing so will damage them.
And yes, the older ipods came with Nimh cells and they did reccomended full discharge cycles.
Im pretty sure the idea was to try not to let the voltage get below 3.5v/cell and never below 3.3. Dead flat is 3 or 2.85 which is when the battery simply cant produce any real current. The phone should have circuitry though to not let the voltage get above 4.25 or below ~3.5.. If the low battery warning comes on, set the brightness to dim, and stop any activities (unless its a phone call, its not THAT important but if youre playing games or watching a movie...) until yo can get to a charger.
By the way this being my first post (i meant to ages ago) Ill just mention that my galaxy S came with recovery mode and download mode Enabled, i got it just last month, Virgin network, Australia.
draining the battery fully was for the older battery types, new age batteries are not recommended to be drained fully

I'm using my phone as a desktop replacement, because I don't have Internet at the moment. I'm using xda, dolphin browser and listening music. It's plugged into the mains and it's not charging. It says 49%, and stuck there. Is it possible I'm using too much battery?

Fully draining or not is not the issue.
In RC, most modern electronic speed controllers have a built-in battery cut-off which will cut off power once it reaches certain voltage. Because OVER-draining battery without cut off can damage/kill/ or make it unable to hold voltage.
Also, once the battery voltage reach certain point (still within safe range) you will notice the motor being powered slow down. This would also be a recommended time to stop.
Cellular phones have built in safe cut off aswell. As I have said I have measured my battery after being full drained, voltage was around 3.55v or so. Which is very normal considering voltage of the battery is 3.7v only with peak charged voltage of 4.2.
Now, Someone mentioned that fully draining your battery repeatedly will dramatically reduce battery life.
Reducing life of the battery has more to do with the amount of AMP used to charge the battery. Faster charging is usually reduce battery life dramatically.
And without hobby grade chargers, you won't be able to control this charge rate.
Slow charge is better but charging at 1C rating is the normal. But charging at 1C means regardless of batteries mah rating, battery can be charged in about 60 minutes. As we all know, our phone batteries doesn't charge from zero to full in 60minutes, right? just like most of the portable devices it takes nearly 3~4hours to fully recharge. Last 20% usually takes longer because Amp provided to charge slowly lowers. That is why.
For example, if Galaxy S battery is 1500mah, than 1C charge rate is @ 1.5amp.
If battery is 3000Mah, 1C is 3.0Amps and so on.
So like I have said over and over before, drain your battery away if you have to by choice or not. Just use it up, I will bet you your battery will last longer than you keep your phone.
U should avoid draining ur battery to 0% (witch is not possible with ur phone. When it shows 0% the charge of the battery is at 10-15%). Li-ion batteries dont have a memory effect, so it would be usless discharching it completely anyhow. Best for sgs battery is charging it before it goes under 50% that will improve the lifetime of ur battery (not how long it lasts before u have to charge but how long it lasts before u have to go and buy a new one)

@xxgg: yes ur right, it wont really damage the battery if u runn it till thr phone shows its empty. But using an app to drain battery as quick as possible will, since the app forces the battery to give out more Ampere than its built to give out

Cycling your phone

How do you properly cycle your phone to get the best battery life? I was under the impression that once you turn on the phone, use it till it completely dies and them charge it fully without playing around with it. Do this about 2 or 3 times. Any input

There will be hundreds of different opinions. I have always been told by manufactures to run it down to around 10% from new. Then good over night charge, do same again and that's it. I never let the phone get down low enough to turn off. but just charge it now as and when needed.
I've read so many contradictory reports/opinions/analysis that it's difficult to tell for sure. Even electrical engineers at my workplace have different takes on how to properly charge a Li-Ion battery.
Personally, my advice is:
- try to charge only when it's down at 10-15%, all the way to 99% with no interruption for the first few cycles
- never 'overcharge' (keeping battery plugged in AC for extended periods of time unnecessarily)
- never push a battery below 5-10% (letting the phone die)
So basically, when the phone gives you a low battery notification, that's when you should re-charge it.

Sorry, but "never overcharge" is a ridiculous advice. All of the newer LiIon batteries come with overcharge circuit protection - it's impossible to overcharge them.

Charging the Note 2?

Just got the Note 2, and want to make sure that I treat it really well. I've long been uncertain on the best way to treat batteries. Am I supposed to drain it as closer to 0% and then charge it back to 100%, or is it fine to charge it whenever, even if I'm only down to 62% or something at the end of the day? Seeing as how it's brand new, is there anything I should be doing in the immediate future to properly condition the Note 2's battery? Thanks

I charge mine every night regardless of percentage (usually around 15% but i sometimes charge over night even at 60%). My battery is still as good as the day i got it.
No need to drain and charge.
Some people say that it reduces the number of cycles of charges the battery can have but it wont make any noticable impact for about 2 years anyway when you're likely to get a new phone anyway, otherwise the cost of a replacement battery is well worth the convenience of charging however you like lol

with lithium ion batteries, you get more overall charges if you charge it before the battery dies.
ie. 100% drain gives you 500 charges
50% drain gives you 1300 charges.
25% drain gives you 2000 charges.
or something like that. also with lithium ion batteries, its bad to completely drain it. when a lithium ion battery is completely drained, it reduces the overall capacity of the battery. most phones have safeguards in place to prevent a complete drain, but leaving a dead battery out for too long without recharging isnt good.
plus, lithium ion batteries dont have the 'memory effect' so draining them fully is pointless. NiCd and NiMH batteries are the ones that lose voltage if not completely discharged regularly.
Dude ... the battery management technology is good in theory. . To understand. ... but in practical use. ..go ahead and charge it as you like. ..the battery will last good for 2-3 yrs... then you can replace the battery. ..note 2 has a replaceable cheap battery unlike the other new devices that are coming out with no option to replace them

Since it's Li-ion battery, it's recommended to partially charge whenever you can to preserve the battery longevity and fully charge it from 0% maybe once a month.

Correct way to charge 5X

Had a Nexus 4 and I did the overnight charge,

There is not a better way to do it, you can rapid-charge it overnight, during the day, in you car, every 3 minutes with 10 minute pause or whenever you would like to.
For me, I use a normal charger overnight and the rapid charger when I need juice during the day or in the car, or when i forget to plug it overnight.
I remember reading on a reputable tech site about how lithium works, you can leave it overnight with no issues but they have a specific amount of charges in them. E.g. 500 charges for a battery and a charge will be counted anytime it goes above 80% etc. After 500 times, your battery should start to see degradation.
All the above figures are made up but that was the gist of the article i read, so don't worry about leaving your phone plugged in, the os will automatically limit the charge once it reaches 100%.

Is it bad to constantly top off your battery?

Note 7 is my first foray into wireless charging. I figured it would be useful at work for me as I can spend random amounts of time away from my desk throughout the day so when at my desk I can drop it on the charger and then grab it when I need to go. I just wondered if thats bad for the battery?
I already did a full drain and then full charge from there and even that I'm not sure if it's still beneficial to do. But with a non removable battery I want to make sure I'm not doing more harm than good and shortening it's life by having it on and off thw wireless charger often during the day. Thanks.

Apparently keeping the battery between 50-80% is the ideal scenario. It's probably ok to change to 100 but leaving it on the charger once it's fully juiced makes the battery heat up too much which is bad for it.

I looked at some of the research people have mentioned and it does seem that between 40 and 80% is the sweet spot on the Lithium Ion batteries. It says not to charge to 100%, but that the phone is smart enough to stop charging ones full to prevent overheating. But regardless I suppose leaving it plugged in overnight isn't the best idea.
But in my case it sounds like multiple charges throughout the day isn't bad on the battery as long as it keeps it in the 40-80% range? I can manage that, just wanted to make sure multiple small(5-10%) charges throughout the day wasn't also shortening its life span.
Hard to say I guess. I was the drain and fully charge guy. Never any issues. My wife is the opposite, she should constantly top it off or close and her battery would drain faster than mine. Eventually hers would die very early. So who knows.

I know some firms in the past have built in charge counters in batteries so you could only charge the X amount of times, but that was a fair few years ago and things have moved on since.
but my phones I have charged them multiple times a day and my Xperia Z1 that I got on launch day is still in use by a friend and still has near perfect battery life despite being charged some time multiple times a day and always being left on charge overnight every night. (so thats for about 3 years now?)
my S6 I have ran on the wireless charger since I got the phone on release day, every time I went in the room I chucked it on the pad to keep it charged up, the phone still works and charges flawlessly, the Samsung charging pad unfortunately wasn't as up to the job as the phone was and died last week. but no big loss as I want a fast charging one after I get my note tomorrow.

Wrong. Going above 80% is a "high stress" situation for lithium batteries. It isn't bad, but the best charging practice for absolute longevity is keeping it between 20%-80%.

Leaving it on the charger doesn't heat up the battery. It just keeps the battery in that high stress state, and isn't good long-term. If you are doing intense activities with it plugged in, then yes that is a combo for high heat which is bad for the battery.

Not really. Leaving it at 100% all day is not the best idea. It'd be better to let it run down to 20% and recharge to 80%. Unless Samsung routes power directly to the motherboard when plugged in, instead of passing it THROUGH the battery first, it is absolutely better to not keep the phone at 100% and charging while using it, heating it up further, and it is still cycling the power/wear through the cells.
Does any of this matter? No. Unless you keep your phone for 2+ years, you aren't going to notice any difference. Charge it whenever and however you want. The battery isn't going to **** out on you because of how you charge it.
Thought the manufacturer warranty was two years anyway? Android phones are only guaranteed updates every two years so may as well upgrade every two years. If the battery craps out inside that time just warranty it. It's extremely unlikely though.

TOO MANY MISCONCEPTIONS. Let me clear them up !!!!
1) Lithium batteries like to sit around 50% for prolonged periods.
2) It will NOT hurt to keep your phone on the charger. The charging circuitry cuts off power once the Cell hits 4.35 - 4.4v
3) It will HURT THE BATTERY MORE to keep using it when it is depleted or near depleted. Lithium batteries DO NOT like to go below a certain voltage depending on specific chemistry formulation.
To expand on this. It is BETTER to keep the phone at 95% than it is to keep it at 5%. I personally would NOT want my battery falling low enough that it gives a low battery indication (usually around 15%)
4) High Charge and Discharge LOWERS battery longevity. Lithium batteries prefer to be charged slowly and discharged slowly.
You guessed it. AVOID high charge scenarios such as Fast Charge. AVOID fast discharge scenarios such as gaming with high brightness etc.
5) Lithium batteries do NOT like heat. Again, this is usually caused due to high charge or discharge scenarios.
It also ties in with Fast charge, wireless charge and especially wireless fast charge. Wireless charging is not efficient and energy as wasted as heat.
Personally I disable fast charge and do not use wireless charging. Good old USB Type C already charges quickly enough for me.

So basically what you are saying is you the more you use your phone, the more wear you will put on your battery.
100% to 0% drain (100% total) is still more wear on the battery than 80% to 40% 2x per day (80% total)?

Basically yes...batteries have a finite amount of charge cycles.
Charging 2000mah into your battery, whether its all at once, or 500mah x 4, should be roughly the same amount of wear on the battery.
For me, only things i ever worry about is deep discharges and heat. Heat is the worst enemy imho.
Everything else is pretty minor when it comes to wear.

You guessed it. AVOID high charge scenarios such as Fast Charge. AVOID fast discharge scenarios such as gaming with high brightness etc.
5) Lithium batteries do NOT like heat. Again, this is usually caused due to high charge or discharge scenarios.
It also ties in with Fast charge, wireless charge and especially wireless fast charge. Wireless charging is not efficient and energy as wasted as heat.
Personally I disable fast charge and do not use wireless charging. Good old USB Type C already charges quickly enough for me.

Somewhere in the samsung+ app for note 7, it says always keep the battery between 50 -90 for longevity.

My last phone, an HTC One M8, spent every single night on the charger for the last 2 1/2 years. I would also connect it to a charger in the car when I was driving for any length of time, and that was fairly often as I was traveling regularly. The battery life was not appreciably shorter when I retired it last week than when I first got it.
