Hello. First post because I'm usually pretty good at finding solutions to my problems just searching. I can't find the solution to my current issue and I hope you fine folks can give me some advice.
Issue arose while clean flashing my d2att to the most recent Task650 AOKP build using the latest TWRP. Did my nandroid to internal sd like usual, factory reset, and format system. Done this 100 times with no issues. This time, TWRP crashed while formatting system and phone vibrates, reboots, hangs on the new kernel splash screen for Task650s Rom. Pull the battery, replace, then boot recovery with the volume home power method. TWRP splash screen shows, screen goes black, vibrates twice, then reboots back into previously mentioned kernel splash and hangs.
So I can't boot recovery and I can't boot my phone. I enter download mode and try to Odin the most recent twrp tar. Same. I try a previous twrp tar. Same.
I think I can use a rooted stock image to get back up and running, but I don't want to lose the contents of my internal sd.
How can I fix this with minimal data loss? Thanks for the help.

Ugh.
AFAIK, you're stuck and will have to Odin back to stock JB just to get running properly again.
Maybe try to Odin stock recovery? I'm pretty sure it's out there somewhere to flash. Then use it to wipe cache/dalvik and then Odin TWRP again. Or try to Odin CWM?
You can use ADB to copy all the files from your phone over to your computer so you don't lose anything. The commands to do this are out there somewhere. I don't know them off the top of my head.

Thanks for the feedback CZ. I didn't want to mess around with ADB so I just used Odin to flash rooted stock and expected to lose some data. Much to my surprise, once the phone was back up and running, my data was still on the internal SD. So everything is good now and I shall go back to lurking!

Odin won't delete /data only a factory reset in stock recovery will
I've actually got several problems.
1.) My phone won't shut down completely. It just goes to the T-Mobile screen and stops shutting down at that point.
2.) When I go to factory reset and click on "delete all..." nothing happens.
3.) The whole reason I want to reset is because I want to flash CyanagenMod and every time I try I get stuck in a boot loop. This happens no matter how many times I wipe everything. I just get stuck in a bootloop...with every Rom I try to flash. I can flash a backup though
I am rooted and have several T-Mobile bloatware frozen using Titanium Backup, so that could be the problem.
So to summarize:
Rooted and running stock ICS
Using Rom Manager and ClockworkMod 6.0.2.7 (also have touch reocovery, but it's quit working)
Titanium Backup used to freeze T-Mo and a couple of Samsung apps
Phone won't shut down properly (have to pull battery)
Phone won't reset to factory settings.
Can't flash roms stuck in Bootloop
I can flash backups tho.
Use TWRP : Wipe , Wipe System and Preload .. Flash Rom Reboot..let sit 10 Min everything should be fine!

So, to be sure I know what your talking about ur sayin that before u flash a rom all your doing is a factory reset? U need to do a full system wipe, start clean, switch to twrp, wipe system cache Calvin and do a factory reset from recovery, then flash ROM, gapps ,and reboot, let the phone sit idle and set itself up for ten min or so before u use it, reboot once then set up ur phone, if that doesn't work Odin back to stock and start fresh

Thanks for the responses guys.Just a little fyi here. I've tried to wipe everything and I do seem to be on some CWM Touch recovery. After tletting the phone sit, drain recharge, fiddling with wiping, and flashing CM9 (by accident, it was in my recovery files) it reboots into the CM9 splash screeen, but just stayed there (no bootloop). As a result I had to buy an N4 that I plan to return (I want it, just can't afford it,lol) and revisited my Herculean disaster (pun intended). I can now wipe! It still reboots into CM9 splash screen, but it seems to be working !
Here's what you need to know. I'm not real knowlegeable about Odin/kies/ and TWRP. I'm thinking of trying to side flash CM10 or CM10.1, but have never flashed this way. Any links for help?
Thanks in advance!

OK its very simple, can u put the phone in download mode? First thing first, go download "Odin 1.85" on you computer and open it, also download "team win recovery project 2.5.5.0 for T-Mobile galaxy s2" it'll be a .tar file, connect your OEM factory USB cable to your computer and with Odin open connect to your phone while holding vol-vol+ ,this should bring up a warning screen, select continue and bam ur in download mode and odon should say "added", now without clicking any other box, select PDA, when it opens find the twrp2.5.5.0.tar file u downloaded earlier, select it and press start in Odin, let it do its thing and u should get a green box with "PASSED", congrats u now have newest twrp recovery, now download your fav rom, mine is Embryo 6.10, place it on your external SD card, boot phone into recovery by holding vol-vol+ and power buttons, select wipe, make sure u do a full wipe, wipe everything that's not storage, then go back home and select install, find the ROM u want and select it, now flash the ROM, let it do its thing and u should be in business, pm me if u need help I'll walk u through it, if I helped hit the thanks button

Thanks soupy. I used odin to flash recovery and to root, but it was a long time ago because the phone never shut down properly and I wasn't able to flash any roms. As a result I've just held on for a new phone. I have to take the (way overpriced) N4 back to T-Mo today and want to get my GSII running again , so that I have something until I buy another N4 from Google this time.
I know. TMI. I just can't resist. lol.
So today's the day I may have questions everyone. hint hint.:silly:

Try to flash Omega + ktoonz kernel and boot normal, but if I reboot get stuck on Samsung galaxy screen.
All ready try odin back to stook and no luck.
please help.............:crying:
What kernel did you use when you flashed Omega?
this happens to me sometimes, though simply removing the battery and reinserting it does the trick for me.
I was on Darth Stalker with ktoonz kernel if it matters.

A sure way of fixing the problem is to flash the tmobile version of the Deviant Kernel.
It's cwm or twrp flashable no need for odin.
No need for Odin unless you messed it up worst and it does not even try to boot
into the Omega rom.
So in other words if it's still trying to boot into Omega rom then the Deviant kernel
will fix it if you go into recovery and flash the M919 version of Deviant kernel.
Here is the link to the Tmobile cwm or twrp flashable Deviant kernel: http://d-h.st/X0b
After flashing this, if it still gets stuck on the logo screen then go back into cwm or twrp
recovery and do a "factory reset" and after that I am certain it will boot normally.
(note: factory reset does NOT wipe or delete the rom)
Thank a lot for your help.
I tried everything but still getting stuck on galaxy screen.
I think I know what was the problem, I format internal sd (format data, app , and scripts) on TWRP, that was the only different thing that i remember .
IF I format format internal SD again and flash a rom or restore backup it will boot normal and work normal until i restart the phone or power off, then it will get stuck in galaxy screen and i have to do the same process again.
any suggestion will be much appreciate.:crying:
Thanks again.

I think at this point an ODIN of the correct firmware for your device is in order, as on rebooting - nothing seems to work.
If this gets you back up, then reroot and flash TWRP again. Note - if you were using TWRP 2.5.0.3 - don't, as it has issues. The previous version is good.
After this, a restore of a nandroid backup should work (unless it was made with the TWRP version mentioned above).
Try to get into download mode and reflash stock tmobile tar. If you cant get into download mode get a usb jig. Only thing that worked for me

My phone is working good again,
I installed paranoidandroid 3.96a today and I had some errors before I was able to install it so I ended up formatting the data and then clearing the caches.
I flashed PA. Then I flashed the latest google apps. Then I flashed PA again and rebooted. My phone loaded fine and I was able to install everything I want.
Then if I reboot my phone it get stuck on the splash screen and cannot load. If I go into TWRP 2.5.0.0 recovery it asks me for a password (I have not yet a password although I recently bought this phone used on swappa so I've contacted the seller to ask if he set a password). If I push cancel at the password screen then I can get into TWRP but if I go to wipe the dalvik cache it say sit "failed." The test printed to the console is:
Updating partition details...
E: Failed to wipe dalvik
Updating partition details...
I also cannot browse the internal memory of my phone. There is no folder named "android" or similar.
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. I'm going to try to update TWRP to the latest version. After that I'm out of ideas
Try the latest twrp like you said. Then you can also try cwm. Before you csn browse your file system in recovery, you have to mount system.
Id try another factory reset and reboot though. If thst doesnt help try another kernel. If youre still stuck, idin flash back to full stock with the root66 firmware, then start over clean from there.

how long do you let the phone sit after rebooting? I'm currently on the same rom and noticed it takes longer than usual to reboot the device. it's seems like it takes just as long to reboot the phone as it does to boot up the phone right after flashing the rom.
try letting the phone sit for 5-10 mins and see if it boots up. it's kind of ridiculous it takes that long to reboot a phone, but then again the rom is in alpha. I might try reflashing the rom to see if this still happens.
Just posted in the ROM thread to see if anyone else has the same issue.

I tried installing PA again and then upgrading TWRP to 2.6.0.0 but it still said that it had 2.5.0.0. Then I installed CM10.1 and used that to upgrade to TWRP 2.6.0.0 which worked. I then tried installing PA3.96a again with the same results.
I think that the problem is with TWRP not recognizing android 4.3 installs correctly because I have the same problem with CM10.2 that I had with PA3.96a.
I don't think the problem is that I'm not waiting long enough because after the first restart (i.e. I flash it and restart loading the ROM fine--then when I restart it for the first time it gets stuck). When I go into TWRP after it hangs the first thing it does is ask me for my password. I don't have a password. I think that something is happening to the system partition after install that makes TWRP unable to read it on this phone. Also it says that 0 MB have been used on my phone ram so I think the problem is with TWRP not being able to read the system partition in 4.3 correctly.
Has anyone gotten android 4.3 working on the t-mobile s3 yet?
Edit: And I can't restore from a nandroid backup (unless I put it on my SD card because the phone cannot read from the system partition).
Did you try mounting /system in recovery?
I would seriously consider Odin flashing stock root66 firmware before anything else at this point. Maybe something is corrupted in one of the underlying partitions.

Yes I did. If I mount it I still couldn't see /android or any other folders. I could also not clear the dalvik cache or do a factory reset.
Okay that's the consensus. I'll try restoring to stock sometime this weekend and see how that goes.
I just reverted back to stock using Odin. Reset the counter to be safe and then used odin to load a rooted stock. Then I installed goo manager and had it install TWRP 2.6.0.0.
Success! I can install and 4.3. Something must have been funky with the previous rooting job or something. Who knows. Thanks!
Right on! Good to hear you got it running good!

Did you install stock with Odin?
I installed stock with Odin. I then installed a rooted stock and used that to reroot my phone by installing goo manager to install twrp 2.6.0.0.
Let me know if you want me to get the links for you. I got them on xda from googling
Edit: Found it. I used this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1900345.
Downloading the stock took about an hour so I would go ahead and just use odin to install the rooted stock. After you install your phone will reboot and then it will hang on a screen with Samsung on it (or at least it did for me). You then restart your phone and go into recovery and do a factory reset. Then install goo manager and reinstall the recovery by clicking on the options/settings button and selecting "Install OpenRecoveryScript." Then you can download whatever ROM you want to install. Reboot and go into recovery and you can install it.

Check your flash counter and if it's anything over 0 run Triangle Away to set it back to 0.
Then follow the directions in the stickied thread for directions on how to revert back to stock. I installed the latest t-mobile ROM from this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1771687

Reboot your phone and instead of pushing volume up to put it into recovery mode push volume down to bring it into download mode. This is also what you use to revert to stock via odin.
IT WORKED
HOLY **** IT WORKED I HAVENT HAD MY PHONE FOR A WEEK I THOUGHT I WAS SOO SCREWED YOU SAVED MY ASS THANK YOU SOOOOOOO MUCH!!!!!!!:laugh::laugh::laugh:
My understanding is that it's actually kind for of hard to brick your phone from doing software modifications. It is possible but I think only if you really screw something up. Like powering down while installing a recovery or something.
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda app-developers app
Unplugging in the midst of a firmware flash, and flashing the wrong models firmware are the easiest ways people hard brick.
If you can get download mode and recovery to boot it can be fixed most of the time.

Yeah what happened with me is I downloaded hyperdrive to my internal and this was my first time and I didn't install cwm or anything like that so I did the factory reset and cleared cashe but then I relized there's no way to clear your dalvik and or launch hyperdrive so I tryed booting my phone and it got stuck on the samsung logo everytime so I used odin to put cwm on my phone and I couldn't access my internal or clear dalvik so I used an external and used my old galaxy s2 to download hyperdrive on to the external and then launched it on my s3 and it installed great it let me choose everything but when I went to launch the phone it got stuck on the hyperdrive boot animation so I tryed like 10 stock roms none of them worked it wouldn't get rid of the hyperdrive boot animation iether so then I was sher the link you gave me wasn't going to work but unlike the other odin ones I did it took time instead of only taking half a second and it worked

I can't get the system to boot up after flashing the Wicked rom. It booted only once but now I am stuck at the Galaxy S4 logo screen at start up. Are you using a 64GB sd card in exFAT format? If so try booting without the sd card. If that don't work you might need to Odin back to stock. Using stock recovery wipe data and start over again.
Also what version of TWRP are you using?
I recommend Philz CWM version as TWRP gave me trouble when using with Aroma installer.

Didn't work. The philz does not even boot into the recovery at all. It just sits at the logo with recovery booting blue text at the top left. Basically at this point I could go back to stock just to have something usuable at this point.

If you want to go back to pure stock, flash this via ODIN: http://hotfile.com/dl/213546261/7ab...-SGH-M919-TMB-M919UVUAMDL-1366964131.zip.html
It is the full stock firmware.
You can follow my guide here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=31890391&postcount=2
But instead of downloading the file in step 1, download the one I listed above.
I had trouble using twrp also, im currently running wicked 6.1 without any issues but here's what I did when I was stuck installing. I went back and cleared data factory reset, and cleared cash then went to my nandroid back up and reinstalled backup. Then I went and downloaded cwm touch recovery installed, then I wipe data factory reset and reinstalled the rom wicked and it worked. Booted up just fine with different recovery. I was having other issues with twrp so cwm worked well. Hope this helps.
Why anyone uses TWRP boggles my mind. CWM official is all you need ^_^

There's two kind of people in this world..
I'm with you, though. CWM touch is epic, lol.
Agreed. Twrp is not stable, use cwm.
