Textra - android app that handles group messaging with iphone - AT&T, Rogers, Bell, Telus Samsung Galaxy S III

Go SMS does this as well but I don't like the UI. Found this application by the developers of Chomp and it only has 1k downloads.

I'll give it a shot. Go SMS has run its course with me but I don't like the other alternatives, and it does group MMS the best

Looks nice, but I don't like that each message doesn't have a timestamp. Back to AOSP messaging...

Has anyone been able to get MMS working? I've tried a few of the tricks round like setting the message size limit and changing the APN to .att.com.
any thoughts?

Love this app, was using the aosp one (have TW) and found this one by accident about two weeks ago browsing the play store. Everything has worked out so far including MMS with no issues. Like everything about it and the features it has so far, feels very lightweight compared to gosms, chomp and handcent. Awesome nonetheless!

I couldn't get MMS to work until I changed the proxy settings you provided. Thank you very much for posting this fix!

Bringing this thread back up a couple months, but wanted to chime in. I've been using textra for it's simplicity for a while now. You actually can view the timestamp for each message by swiping from the right edge inward. No way to have it permanently displayed as far as I can tell, but can be done.

I've been trying this out, too, and it's nice. One annoyance: Is they're any way to get rid of the (apparently) persistent status bar notification icon? It's telling me that I have X number of unread messages, but I know I have read them all.

I have recently discovered Go SMS too and I'm loving it.
Does anyone know how to modify gosms so the contact with a new new message is a different colour? It goes bold but still white!

I don't know what you did, but I tried chompsms twice already in my htc one X and it was soooo laggy. Chompsms sure is fast in my galaxy note, but in my HOX, everytime i will open a text message from the conversation list, it will take like 3 seconds before it opens. I know it is not supposed to be like this so honestly I don't know what I did wrong.
Would people say GoSMS works better than ChompSMS then? A friend has also recommended I try "Handcent SMS" too,

Just tried Handscent it seems decent; not sure if I prefer GoSMS over it though.
I use Chomp currently and recommend it. However, you should know there is a trial period and once that it is over it prompts you to purchase or else you get a pesky advertisment at the bottom of the app.

I too also used BiteSMS without any issues. So naturally I picked up using ChompSMS as I have read forum posts stating that both apps are made by the same group, however I am starting to doubt this.
I am having an occasional issue where one of my contacts is routinely receiving an already sent txt msg from me a couple of days later. This has happened twice in the past two weeks and is quickly becoming my biggest pet peeve of this app. Has anyone else experienced this with Chomp?
When I first moved to android I used Handcent but after finding GoSms I have not looked back. I cant comment about Chomp but I wont be moving away from GoSms ever.

Can I ask, do you mean that if you try and send 1 text it sends 3 or so, or am I misunderstanding?
BANE
No, he means that if you send a text message, get a response and send a new text message, and sends another one you will get that warning message. It is meant as a security feature if an malacious app is trying to send multiple SMS's you will find out.
Saw a similar thread some days ago, but I don't know if they found a workaround for it or not.
Dude I am getting this to and it annoys the hell out of me I have i9250 with tmo and with ICS it didn't do this and I increased the number of texts for it to save and still does this.... I get this message after every text I was in cm went back to stock for jb and now dealing with this and there is just something about being stock I like better but I cannot deal with this
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda app-developers app
Well, it's nothing to do with the amount of messages to store. It's how many messages you send per minute (or something) that causes that message to appear.
Are you using 3rd party messaging app?

Nope stock messaging

Just started to get this today. Super annoying!
BUMP!
How can we disable this message for this app?
Bump.
Have the same "issue" (even if it is not one). When I send two or three messages to one person in a reduced amount of time, the warning message pops.
Not something truly important but it starts to bother me..is it a control integrated in Android itself or just the messaging apk ?

Dammit you beat me to it, this fix does work if you are using most AOSP based roms, for some reason it does not work on Stock JB but so far has worked on any other custom rom ive tried. simply install open up app and accept what its telling you and you are good to go.
Wow, so good, seems to be working on ParanoidAndroid 1.9.92 with the APK. Thanks !
There are ways to remove that notification
There are some custom ROMs that have removed that notification. If you still see it, there are apps on Google Play (like SMS Limit Unlock or SMS limit tool) that can remove that limit completely. Tried both and only the first one worked on my Android 4.2.2 device, so you're welcome to give them both a try.
(And you will need root, of course...)
Set SMS message limit
Try to look under Settings --> Security --> App Security -> SMS message limit
I have it there and have set it successfully to 200.
of course - it is in settings

(Comparison) Handcent vs Chompsms vs Stock

Hey guys I just want to have people's opinions about the above apps. I have S3 and have been using my stock messaging app with SMSpop up to handle the notifications when I receive texts. Lately I've been reading about these two messaging apps and I have been interested in trying them especially because I want emoji support (I hate my iPhone friends lool). Anyways tell me what messaging app you use and why you love it.
I know what someone will say maybe you should try them out and do research. I have seen review videos for both apps, but I don't really have the time to try them out one by one. I'd rather read reviews than try them.
If I do install a 3rd party messaging app I can keep SMSpop up? Or do the 3rd party apps take care of those functions as well? Such as personalized LED lights per contact and custom text tone for each contact?
thanks for your time and recommendations.
:good::good:
I also get paranoid installing and deleting things in my phone because if it slows down I feel like the program installed a file that didn't delete when I uninstalled. I know I'm paranoid but I know both apps use ads to support their free version.
I have used handcent on all my android phones. I've tried go sms and chomp sms but I always end up back woth handcent. I don't remember if the other two had pop up text, but handcent does. I'd suggest just try each one for a few days and see which one you like best.
Sent from Flip's S3
Honestly... You do have time. Ha. Both handcent and chomp will receive your messages. And it only takes a couple seconds to install... If you install it receive messages and end up not liking it un install and try the other, they're not going anywhere and having it won't halt your daily life. So you absolutely have time to try each out if you desire. And if you watched a lot of video reviews some of these questions should have been answered... Personally I used to always use handcent mostly because of the feature to use a password to access texts. But I also like it as a texting app

Used Handcent for a long time, but then my wife got an HTC 8x (Windows mobile) and my daughter an iPhone 5 w iOS6, and neither of them could see my emojis; I tried all three " how to encode emojis" settings in Handcent, none made a difference. Even though including emojis isn't exactly a deal breaker , I like fiddling with apps so I tried Go SMS Pro - worked fine with emojis, but access to Quick Text was cumbersome (needed several taps). So now I am using chompSMS - emojis work fine, access to quick text is easy (though it's called "templates"). The only thing I don't like is that all three SMS apps have outgoing messages on the right, incoming on the left. For some reason (don't really understand it myself !!) I prefer it the other way around. You can make that switch in Handcent & Go, but not in chomp.....
I honestly don't recommend any of the above apps unless you have a slow phone. I'd use GO SMS Pro, fully featured and flies off the handle. It pops up text messages too, and has a free add on where you can use and see all iOS 6 emojis.

Are you rooted? If you are just use this link:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1922104
I don't know what happens when you flash straight up but I manually unzipped on phone and placed files in correct location while backing up originals. This will give emoji in stock app so you can your current setup and still have emoji!
I have used handcent for a long time on many different devices. I have tried other apps, GoSMS and Chomp, and have always returned to handcent. I like the privacy inbox and the fact that it does not run as a service like GoSMS. I do like GoSMS, but find it ridiculous that you can not disable it as a service.
Also, handcent has a setting to change its priority allowing security and location apps like Cerberus and Androidlost to work properly.
Thanks guys
I've used all of them for a while now. I decided to stick with Chomp sms its basic but works really well hasn't crashed and my battery has seen no change. Even MMS I feared would appear when I used this app did not surface so overall it was a nice experience and I am sticking to it. I wish I had more friends so I could test out the group message but if its something I don't use a lot I am not gonna worry if it works 100% correctly.
IMO GO SMS is the best for functionality and themes. Only thing I don't like about it is that every time I send MMS is resizes the crap out of it whereas stock handles it pretty good but then again it could be my fault for not changing or changing something in the settings.
i use handcent as well. love the popup even on the lock screen. you can read and reply without unlocking your phone, good assortment of themes and lots of settings

+1. Never had any issues with Chomp. And the main person I text (my wife) has an iPhone 4s that I jailbroke and is running Chomp's iOS version which is a jailbroken app called BiteSMS. Emojis/MMS work perfect between the two of us.

I've used stock mms since I got my phone, and believe me I tried gosms as well as handcent but I still kept going back to stock. gosms was too bloaty like a previous poster mentioned while handcent has that ugly gingerbread feel to it. stock looks and feels slick and has just the right amount of customization and not overloaded with features like gosms.
Then i tried messages+ (in addition to contacts/dialer/call log+) and oh man. It has the same slickness as stock and I just really love the UI. its not laggy at all, it feels as though this should have been the stock mms app. Oh and it has the AOSP popup feature.
everyone is entitled to their opinion and this is mine. if your a day over 15 and you use a stupid sms replacement then you need to look deep into your soul because this is srs bizns.
the simplicity and beauty of aosp's app is what set's it apart. if google could do anything to improve it i would be impressed because imo its perfect
the other ones are garbage. not even a fair comparison because the other one's are for children.
GO SMS ftw. And yes it does have pop up text and its very customizable.
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda app-developers app
I personally use GoSMS. It has a few features that other's do NOT... Like the ability to have seperate & customizable MMS receive settings (mmsc, proxy, port, etc) custom user agent, and change the way it resizes MMS pictures and what the maximum size can be - all separately and independently from the stock mms app.
It does have pop up notification, custom status bar icons for individual contacts, custom individual message tones.... very nice. And its themeable which I do like...
I can't speak of handscent... but I will say this, I was an iPhone user for 4+ years before my current GS3, and on the iPhone BiteSMS is kind, which IS ChompSMS on android -- and I tried it but overall liked GoSMS better... I can't speak of the service running, etc... I will say MOST of the themes cost money, so that sucks - and I use the free ones.
I'm on T-mobile USA, and the NETWORK limits MMS to 300k - plain and simple, so regardless of anything else, your image is going to be resized by the network to 300k regardless what app you use.... (unless something has changed recently on T-mobile network). Another advantage of GoSMS is the customizable UAPROF (user agent) --- This is the string the phone sends to the network server telling HOW to deliver the MMS to your device. The wrong UAPROF results in crappy images. The RIGHT UAPROF results in very nice images. THIS IS A BIG FACTOR IN QUALITY OF MMS - ESPECIALLY IF YOUR USING UNLOCKED PHONES OR NON-BRANDED PHONES ON CERTAIN NETWORKS.... That *ALONE* makes GoSMS worth it (depending on your phone & network combination)
ChompSMS was fine, I just liked GoSMS better for whatever the reason? they're pretty much the same (minus the customizable settings in GoSMS). Now that I'm using a T-mobile branded phone on the T-mobile network, none of the custom settings matter anymore, and if I use the stock mms/messaging app on my current custom rom (darthstalker) I am able to send MMS over wifi just like sending over data. Also receive over wifi....
* RANT *
Why I hate the default messaging/mms app.................. When I get a picture, it plays as a slideshow in a tiny preview unless I save it and view in gallery. UNACCEPTABLE. GoSMS doesn't do that.... I get a picture and I see it using the default viewer - in full screen. NOT AS A SLIDE SHOW. If the default app would do this, I'd probably be using it with some kind of smspopup tweak.
/rant
Believe this thread has served it's purpose.

[Q] Issues with MMS/group messaging on AOSP based ROMs

So when I was stock, I could use group messaging fine on the stock messaging app without any issues. I threw CM 10.2 on, stock messaging does not handle MMS group messages, and I'm finding the same thing with VanirAOSP. I've tried Contacts+, but even when group messages "work" (they don't show who sent messages, though, so it's pretty useless...) any time I send a message it just sends out 6 or 7 individual messages.
I haven't tried a Sense based ROM yet, but I really don't want to, either. Has anyone found a workaround for this? I can't be alone on this issue.

EDIT - so far, so good for me. on Textra CM10.2. Still running basic tests - I tried with my dad and brother, and my brother came back in the group, but my dad came back separate. Knowing him though, hes not responding to the group message hes responding to me haha.

I'll give Textra another shot. I used that previously on my Thunderbolt and it was sending single messages.
I have friend with an iPhone and my brother-in-law has a note 2. Surprisingly the note 2 had more issues staying within the group message than the iPhone.
Textra had an issue with group MMS sending when I first got it. I had copy the MMSC URL from the stock messaging app and paste it into the Textra app. That fixed my issue and has worked perfectly since.

best texting app for pixel 2?

Issue just me... Or is the Verizon messaging app actually really good? Better than Textra dare I say?
YAATA is what I use. Best and I have been using sense alpha stage a few years ago. You can customize anything. Give it a try.
pulse
I've been using chomp sms for 5 years? here's a great review: Chomp SMS is a relic in the world of Android. It’s been around since the days of Eclair and FroYo and it was known as one of the two best SMS replacement apps. It’s still wildly popular today and for good reason. There is theme support that lets you make your text messages look how you want it to look. Included also is over 800 emoticons, widgets, quick reply pop ups, and even SMS blocking if you’re tired of getting texts from a number. If you need something with a lot of theming options, this is among the best options out there for you. Beware, though, it is a little bit bloated.
I really like Signal, really solid.

No way in hell I would actually use the Verizon app, if for no other reason that Verizon is shady as hell when it comes to data/spying on customers.
I've been using Textra for years and it has always been rock solid for me.
I've tried so many, yaata, chomp, pulse (today), etc., and I always come back to Textra.
It's the fastest, has great features and always works.
Yaata is choppy and I keep trying to like it.
I just tried Pulse today and it's smooth but the settings panels get weird colors and it force closed every time I tried to schedule a text.
Textra is always the winner, but I keep trying
