I got my SCH-S960L and was told by Straight Talk it wasn't activated in store(walmart) so they couldn't get me set up. If I flash a stock Sprint Rom will I be able to activate this phone by using other methods? Please help, I have a great phone I can't use! (I didn't steal it!)

What do they mean activated in store. These are prepaid obviously so they have no one to call to activate. If I'm not mistaken, the only thing walmart scans is the upc barcode which is only to verify its part of their inventory. So, hypothetically, I believe, even if you did steal it you should still be to get it activated. Straight talk customer service has absolutely no idea what's going on ever but I still like yhe phone service. Try buying a BYOP package. They come with an activation card and then just go to the website and activate from there, you may not even need the activation card just the meid and as long as the phones legit you should be good.

T999v if it was like that on stock. That is the base firmware and the one that you need to upgrade your boot loader with. Caution however, flash the wrong one and you will have problems.
Make a nandroid, run the boot loader backup script and then flash the T999v boot loader that's your best bet.
Below, Aerowinder makes a great point. Check that before moving on and be sure to thank him.

If you are on 4.1.2 firmware you won't need a computer to root your phone you can just get the app framearoot install it run it select usually the first exploit or name if that doesn't work and there not another one which there should be then you'll need a computer but If there another one click it if it doesn't work this means it not going to work on your device. How to tell if it worked it will say successful on the screen

Android Forums is a bit better for VM users, in terms of a forum dedicated to rooted users of the SGS3. Sprint forum here on XDA is a good place for some general info.

You need to activate first regardless, and then I would recommend getting TWRP out of your head, Philz Touch recovery works extremely well for our phones (I am on VM SGS3 also). You will push the custom recovery as the first part of the rooting process (using Odin), at which point you can make a backup before proceeding with the rest of the root procedure.

I rooted mine on a very old eMachines desktop using Windows XP. Also, having not updated to 4.3 "official" is actually a plus, it gives you more freedom further down the road. Check out the OP in this thread (I authored it) and let me know what help you need.

[Q] how to unlock note 2 AT&T 4.3 ?

hi
how can I unlock my Samsung galaxy note 2 AT&T 4.3 ?
I read few people said if I downgrade it to 4.1.1 to unlock it I will lose my warranty please help
There's two separate issues in your post.
The first we are working on. I'm in the process of installing the original 4.1.1 rom to see if it will allow hidden dialer menu and then the unlock.
I'll try to do this today or tomorrow and report my results in detail.
The second matter you raised I'm not advanced enough to answer. I'm sure someone here will have that info or you can use the XDA search function.

I successfully unlocked my note 2.
I first installed a tw rom, cleanrom ace, found at scottsroms.com.
Then I used a replacement of the phoneutil.apk that I found online.
Once I installed the apk, I followed the simple instructions found in the thread about unlocking. I will try to post the link to that thread momentarily.
FWIW, I had tried unsuccessfully to unlock with the same exact Rom just a few days ago. The only change was switching out the phoneutil.apk

[HELP THREAD] Galaxy Note 2 AT&T Stuck in "Firmware upgrade encountered an issue"

[HELP THREAD] Galaxy Note 2 AT&T Stuck in "Firmware upgrade encountered an issue"
I am in really deep doo doo right now. I was trying to root my AT&T Galaxy Note 2 (SGH-i317) and about halfway through my pc screen turns off and when I turned it back on, Odin said FAIL so when I rebooted my phone it got stuck into the firmware upgrade issue crap.
So I do as it tells me and open Kies and try to start Recovery mode but it just keeps saying "Connecting" and never connects
Now I look online for help and then try to update with Kies
Guess What:
No Help
So then I try to get the firmware .md5 for it but since I'm at 4.4.2 right now, and there's no 4.4.2 firmware available (as far as i know) I can't downgrade.
So now I am stuck here with a useless phone begging for help.
So PLEASE HELP ME!!!!
I realize there may be other threads like this ( that's where I looked for help) but I really need help and I am super desperate for it

Ok so now the same problem happened again but instead I tried to flash stock firmware and it failed, no matter which firmware I downloaded they all failed. So I used the file you gave me and It worked....sorta. It boots up and gets to the AT&T logo then stops there. I cleared cache and data and even reflashed but it still just gets stuck there. I can get to recovery but i can't get on to my actual OS. You are a miracle worker from the last one so I am hoping you can do the same with this one!
