[Q] Rooting and getting s-off problems - HTC Wildfire S

Ok, I have rooted phones before but this one is proving to be a pain. It isn't my phone. It belongs to a mate.
His screen became unresponsive. He searched the web and found that it may well be the digitiser so he bought one off ebay and fitted it himself. All good so far. However, it seems to be a common thing that when you fit a new digitiser it requires calibration and before you can calibrate it, it simply doesn't respond.
So, I have a phone with no usable screen. It turns on and I can see the screen no problem but I cannot get into it. He then turned to me. I found there is a tool to calibrate it which you can install called PG76DIAG. Put this on the root of the SD card and run the bootloader and run it. However it complains it can't run it. I'm not entirely sure why but I read that rooting the phone would mean I could.
So to root the phone I need to set s-off. Fine, I downloaded unrevoked to do this. However this needs me to set USB debugging mode on. As my mate is a technophobe he a) has no idea what that is and b) hasn't turned it on.
As the screen is not working I can't turn it on. So at the moment, I cannot root the device. Does anyone have any ideas how I can root the device or get the screen working?
Thanks.

Ok, first off are you sure its a wildfire s (marvel) and not a wildfire (buzz/bee).
The wildfire s does not have a s-off, except for the cdma one. But the tool you ran would have s-offed it if it was.secondly Can you boot into the bootloader again and tell me what it states.
ie device code name, hboot version and radio version.
Thirdly, if you do have a wildfire s you can still run the diag.nbh if you have a. Goldcard, root not required and that in turn will recalibrate the screen

On your third point I don't know what diag.nbh is and I have no idea what a Goldcard is so I guess the answer is "I don't know"

Ok have a read at this http://www.theandroidsoul.com/guide-how-to-create-goldcard-sd-card-for-htc-android-phones-w-video/
A goldcard is used to make htc devices ignore cid checks for ruu's ect. But this will allow you to run the pj76diag.zip which in turn will calibrate your screen. Although you will not gain s-off
The website linked in this guide is dead, but i can generate goldcards so bump this thread with your reverse cid and we can give it a bash

Ok, I installed Goldcard Helper and ran it and the options I had were mmc0 and mmc1. mmc1 was at the top so I guess when the website says mmc2 it means 1.

ok use this goldcard and follow the guide to patch the file into your micro sd card. it Needs to be the same card you took the cid from.
make sure that if it is your main sd card that you back up everything on it, just incase it needs to be formatted afterwards.
after that you need to run this from your sd card in the bootloader to use the diag file to make the phone boot into the diagnosis file.
that in turn should recalibrate the screen

Ok, the PG76IMG.zip file in the second link.
Do I put that in the root of the CD card that I've just made into a goldcard? Do I extract it?
Thanks.

ah, sorry it goes onto the root of the sd card, still zipped and unchanged

Cool. Ok I did that. I restarted and chose recovery from the bootloader and I get the red triangle. First of all I get a phone icon with a green circle which then changes to the red triangle.
It did this before I started working on it anyway. Part of me thinks the thing is bricked anyway. Any further ideas?
When I ran it with the goldcard it didn't complain though.
Any other thoughts?

You shouldn't choose recovery at all. You shouldn't get the chance, the phone should find the diag file and jump straight into it. Also, that is just the stock recovery screen, its fine. This leads me to think the goldcard has failed. Did the hboot search the card or just allow immediate control from the volume buttons?

I followed the instructions on that webpage to the letter (honest)
I tried it again. It shows the PG76IMG.zip loading and then checking but it then just goes to the main main after that.

My mistake I've linked the wrong file :-/ download this, http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=785885&d=1321564172 and extract onto the root of your sd card. Then try again, you shouldn't need to re-goldcard unless you have formatted it since.

Ok I guessed that the nbh file is the one I need so I put just that one in the root. Rebooted and it parses the file and then says security fail, update failed.
I reckon I'm gonna tell my mate to buy a new phone.

If you have a custom recovery you can go to recovery and usb debugging is already enabled and you can also mount usb storage giving you access to the sd card.

[Q] Un root HTC Bravo...

First off, Yes I have searched more than this site for an answer to the point where my handset would not do anything but go into the recovery menu.
What I want to do is put stock HTC Android on my Desire.
Currently it is rooted but has to be un rooted to go onto works E Mail server. Yes I know it makes no difference but my employer insist on official firmware on handsets.
The handset is a GSM HTC Desire (Bravo)
BRAVO PVT1 SHIP 2-ON
HBOOT-093.0001
CLOCKWORKMOD RECOVERY v2.5.0.7
I have tried several RUU's only to be told of a boot loader error.
Can some one please tell me how this is done?
I asked my network and they could not help so unless some one can help me im going to have to ask HTC.
THANKS in advance
RICK

Hmmm,
How would they know if the HTC Sense ROM just happened to be rooted. One could argue that the ROM was a valid HTC ROM. I know it's semantics but ...
The "About phone" would still show HTC as the ROM.
There must already be a variety of ROMs on HTC desires already used in your company.
The Clockwork recovery would give it away mate.

This might work for you Not sure if you have tried it but try again
WAIT, BEFORE YOU START, CREATE A GOLDCARD. IT IS VERY NECESSARY. THINGS WILL GO WRONG IF YOU DONT.
Firstly, download this file. http://dl.dropbox.com/u/13240777/Desire Downgrade.ZIP
Extract the files.
Run the win-down.bat file.
Follow on screen instructions.
After the process is completed, Head to the root of your SD card and check if there is a file named PB99IMG, there should be one.
Secondly, disconnect your phone and turn it off. (MAKE SURE PHONE IS CHARGED TO AT LEAST 70%++
After that boot up your phone while pressing the volume down button and the power button.
The bootloader should be checking for files after awhile and once it found the file that is supposed to be in the root of your sd card, press the volume up button (NOT EXACTLY SURE, SHOULD BE THE ONE THAT SAYS YES AND CONTINUE)
It should be writing files to your phone. and replaces everything. E.G: HBOOT, RECOVERY,RADIO and such.
It should be writing files successfully and then it would ask you to reboot. Continue with the reboot and you should be having your Desire back to stock. Perfect.
PLEASE KEEP IN MIND THAT THERE ARE RISKS INVOLVED LIKE FAILURE OF WRITING TO THE HBOOT. PLEASE REMEMBER TO FOLLOW INSTRUCTIONS. MAINLY, DO NOT BLAME ME FOR ANYTHING THAT GOES WRONG.
FINALLY, YOU SHOULD BE READING EVERYTHING UP TO HERE AND THAT YOU MUST HAVE A GOLDCARD (A GOLD SD CARD)
Hope this helps you and please ask if you have further questions. PM me if the questions cannot be answered here. Good Luck

Yup, "ERROR 140:BOOTLOADER VERSION ERROR" The only time you can put a lower bootloader version is when you have a gold card.
The above method posted by Shockem should work. A second method is to just put a gold card in your device and get the latest WWE RUU. Check my signature for the file. Once a gold card is in, it will work. Note that this method unbrands your device, so if you a branded device with visible logos, dont go for this.
Third method is by flashing the OTA zip file you got from your operator if you have it. Again gold card should be in the device. But is is likely that it may also work without since CustID is same. Advantage: preserves branding
So do I still need a gold card even though my device is rooted?

Certainly.........
Point is you say you've tried several RUUs and they dont work..Hence we have to assume it's a branded phone. HTC even brands some phones with the brand HTC (Eg Indian HTCs). To unroot a branded HTC, you need a goldcard.
i had same problem, i was trying for days till i rememberd that i can downgrade hboot, install android 2.1 and ota update froyo. ( if your desire wasnt branded you dont need goldcard). problem was that i couldnt find stock froyo, only eclair
this thread helped me :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=768256
i hope it helps
Point is some people (including me in the past) dont realize that they have a branded phone. There may not be any visible branding. So better be safe than sorry, by creating a goldcard.. Once the device if bricked, you cant (in most cases) create a goldcard
Thank you all so much.
I'll be doing this tonight.

[Q] Wildchild Issues, please help a new user

Dear everyone,
My phone is a device originally from Bell Canada. The specs are
Marvel PVT SHIP S-OFF RL
HBOOT-0.90.0000
MICROP-0451
RADIO-7.46.36.14M
Apr 8 2011, 17:45:10
Android v. 2.3.3
Software number: 1.36.666.5
Model: PG7611000
I was tempted to try the legendary Wildchild but couldn't reboot it to recovery mode with a properly prepared sd card.
Then I thought perhaps I still needed to unlock the bootloader. I went to the htcdev site and followed the steps.
I chose the right version RUU for the Bell 1.36.666.5 but an error notice said model ID was wrong.
I also tried to get the token ID. it failed for sure "Command error" so can't get the Token ID
When I tried the Wildfire_S_All-In-One_Kit_v1.0. The same thing happened: "Command error"!
Yes, the HTC SYNC was uninstalled. The debugging was on.
I didn't want to bother others until I had tried everything I could think of.
With no knowledge on android, I have spent 10 hours struggling with different approaches found online. Need some help now.
What procedure should I follow for my phone if I want to use Wildchild?
Thank you!

Thank you so much, Sir.
I followed this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1533639 here and applied that recovery file but nothing happened. I still get the wrong model ID message. Then I rebooted the phone and found out the HBOOT was not changed.
So far there seemed to me two solutions on the forum.
One is to update the HBOOT to an unlockable higher version then update the RUU and get it unlocked again. Or do some trick with something like ROM 1, which I have no idea how to get access to.
Extract the rom1.zip from the RUU, copy it to the root of the phone micro-sd card, rename it as PG76IMG and turn off the phone. Pull the battery out and reinsert it. Hold the volume down key and press the power on. It should boot into the bootloader. Then it will ask if you would like to update radiov2, choose yes and after reboot, you should be s-off...

Oh... I think I make a mistake. That's for s-off only. For flashing the wildchild ROM, you need to install a recovery other than the stock recovery (e.g. CWM recovery). And then root your device. Then you could install the ROM from the CWM recovery.

I got the WC3 on my phone with ROM 2 and ROM 1 -tried both but the "unlocked" pink line is now above the specs. I tried the RUU program. It says "model ID error" again... WC works now but how can i "unlock" it? btw, the phone is still s-off but locked.
I think because it is "unlocked" so LinkSD doesn't work. It says ext2 may not be supported by your device. Try FAT32". What is wrong? I followed the WC3 instruction created by the developer - 1 FAT, 1 EXT2 and 1 SWAP. Another problem I have is after move 1 apps to the SD card. It is full. I have a 4 G card with 1.2 FAT32, 512 Swap and the rest is EXT2.

Hey glevitan, I think it's brilliant of you, that you are here answering noob queries (like me), couldn't get any response on the IRC channel yesterday.
Think I have the same problem as the OP, but I've tried with 2 SD cards so far. Going to try after freshly FAT32 formatting one of those SD cards today evening, any chance that could work?
I'm from India, and though it's not carrier locked, the Desire HD i'm trying to root is now stuck on the screen with a black triangle, with the Red Exclamation sign, right after the splash screen. Only can access HBOOT 2.0 when restarting with Vol. Down + Power button.
I also now keep getting error:device offline problems as well when trying to run the Ace kit. The Ace kit only detects the phone and takes to the "Enter Pass key" screen if the phone is in the black triangle screen. It does not detect the phone if it's on the HBOOT or FASTBOOT screens.
Flashing an RUU also fails on the INFOsignature check point. So i guess the problem is an SD card issue.
I also couldn't find any method from the HBOOT screen to mount SD to transfer files to it, have now got hold of a Micro SD adapter to try transferring files to it through a card reader.
The software build version of the phone was on the list of ROM's necessary to downgrade in your PDF file, and I think that's where it is now stuck.
What I hope to now do is 1. Rerun the ACE kit with this formatted SD Card and see if ACE successfully completes
2. Download one of the PD98IMG.zip files, paste it in the SD Card root, get into HBOOT and hope HBOOT flashes the stock ROM.
3. Pray hard.
Didn't realise rooting the Desire HD was so insanely hard compared to my Nexus S, would never have attempted to try!!!
Thanks for any help/guidance/(even if you vaguely point in some direction, think I'll run that way like a dog in hope of finding a bone. )
Yes you were right about it being the sd card. My original card was a 4GB card i bought off eBay (probably sourced from China). Today i used a 32GB class 10 card by Samsung and it worked perfectly. Doubt you'll need a card of that standard but i thought i'd give the details for reference.
i am having the same issues. downgrade doesnt work. ugh. wish there was a program like the ace kit that i could download. any ideas....? plz help

AAHK is still around, just not on XDA. It's linked in the OP of the Ace Think Tank thread, linked in my signature.

[Q] Stuck DesireHD, can still get HBOOT, OrangeUK, help! (Noobishness within)

Hi all,
After scouring the intertubes for 2 days, I've had to give in and beg for wisdom on this one.
Recently inherited a Desire HD from my wife, factory-reset but loaded with Orange crapware, so I thought I'd crack on and root straight away.
Went for it with the AAHK kit, however it hung at the white screen after restarting, and have had no life out of it ever since. I can still access the HBOOT screen and Bootloader, from which I managed to query the device infor, CID etc, see attached file. HBOOT info is:
ACE PVT SHIP S-ON RL
HBOOT-0.85.0024
MICROP-0438
RADIO-26.09.04.11_M2
eMMC-boot
Apr 12 2011,00:55:45
I've tried to get the firmware up and running again with various RUU's, with and without the goldcard I've made, and am now at a loss! The RUU will initially look to be working, get some way into the progress bar before returning the error message - 'The ROM Update Utility cannot update your android phone. Please get the correct ROM Update Utility and try again.'
As the device can switch on, it's clearly not a brick, just incredibly stuck!
Can anyone help me get this going again, ideally unbranded and rooted?
Thanks in advance!

Ok, the phone is still s-on.
Did you try to run aahk again on the phone?
What system did you use to run aahk on? Maybe try the method with the ubuntu boot cd to rule out any problems with the host computer.
Since the phone is still S-ON you can only install signed images. But the RUU ones should work.
Did you also try to copy the RUU to the SD-Card (adb push "RUU-File" /sdcard/PD98IMG.zip) and boot into hboot?

I did try to rerun AAHK, all it did was give me a connection error message.
I presume pushing the RUU to the SD card is the same as copying it and renaming the file? I've literally zero experience of the terminal ocmmands involved.
Cheers,

it seems that your goldcard might not be working. However not sure without knowing exactly what your error is.
What is your cid and main version number?

CID is ORANG001.
Version no. is 1.31.405.6
Re. creation of the goldcard - I put the sd in my wife's phone and ran the Goldcard helper app, then put the code into the website, then used the image file it created. Seemed straightforward, not sure what could be the problem there? It was a brand new 32GB card.

Ok. Let me find a ruu that works for you and flash it in fastboot per the guide in my signature.

That would be great, thanks!
Which guide is that information in, or can you give me a quick rundown in this thread?
Many thanks.

It's linked in his signature (which you can't see from the XDA app). If you're using the app, it's the PDF in post #7 in the Ace Think Tank thread.

Hi glevitan,
I tried that RUU, it failed on a 'remote: 42 custom id check fail' error. I've attached an image of the terminal window. No idea what this means.
An RUU is a .exe, run it in windows like any other software

Ok. Try the following. Rename that file PD98IMG.zip, put it into the sdcard and boot in hboot. When prompted to update, choose yes if that error still occurs, then your goldcard is failing.

Wrong. A ruu can be in a .zip file and be flashed in fastboot or in hboot. The .exe format is how carriers pack it.

Cracked it.
I stopped trying to use the 32GB microSD and bought a cheap 8GB one. Glevitan's firmware then flashed no problem, aahk did it's stuff, and all is well in the world! So small-capacity microSD's make better goldcards.
Thanks for all your help!

[Q] Can't boot stuck at HTC EVO 4G

I'm repairing a HTC Evo 4g which my friend hired me to fix for his friend which won't boot. It stays stuck at the main screen when it boots up. The phone to all of our knowledge hasn't been rooted or anything but that can always be wrong. I can't access recovery but can access fastboot.
The fastboot screen says
Code:
SUPERSONIC EVT2-3 SHIP S-ON
HBOOT 2.10.0001
MICROP-041f
TOUCH PANEL-ATMEL224_16ab
Any information on how to approach this would be great.
Thanks,
Mike
Anyone? Really need help I'm stuck and no other threads that I see of are from people who rooted their phones and as I said before the owner believes it was bone stock.
Thanks

What happens when you try to access recovery from the bootloader screen? The phone has an older Hboot and it's S-on, but that doesn't mean it isn't rooted. Might need to run a RUU from the bootloader
Also, did your friend receive the phone in this condition?
The advice is free....the bandwidth, not so much

When you go into the recovery the phone freezes, reboots, HTC EVO 4G screen and shuts off.
The phone owner did not receive it this way I believe they said the phone just randomly did this and never worked again.

Why has the evo declined in popularity so bad?
Try running this RUU through the bootloader. This will bring the phone up to software version 4.67 and install the stock Android recovery, as well as update all firmware. You'll need to place the file on the root of your external SD card and run it through the bootloader. Make sure the phone has a good charge on it before trying this. I can't remember if you need to rename the file PC36IMG.zip, or leave it as is. Hopefully this will get you up and running. Just follow the prompts in the bootloader.
The advice is free....the bandwidth, not so much
It needs to be renamed to "PC36IMG.zip" (make sure its not ".zip.zip" by accident)
Just for clarification, an RUU is run on a computer with your phone attached, what you are suggesting is flashing stock software through the bootloader

Actually I believe it can be done both ways. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, though, as I've never had to run one myself.

OK I'll try this and report with my results. Until then thanks for the help

No problem. From the bootloader screen, what radio does the phone have?

Disregard if you seen what I previously had. I missed the SD card step. I can't do this until I find an SD card since my Android phone has a built in SD card and no way to have an external one. And the phone happens to be missing it's SD card aswell.
The radio is 2.15.00.11.19
Ok I did everything you guys said. When I go into the bootloader it loads the image and everything. I then go into my PC and run the RUU. But it gets stuck at Updating Signature and eventually gives me the 155 error unknown problem.
Can you guys tell me why it's doing this to me? I got everything on my SD card correctly and everything.
Anyone? Tired of person asking me if it's done when it's been a disaster since I had it.

Format the sdcard to FAT32 (even if its already formatted like that)
Put the PC36IMG.zip on it again and power into bootloader

Yeah, they both do the same thing because you can actually pull a bootloader flashable zip FROM the RUU
The only point I was trying to make is that RUU's are specifically executables run through a computer
Going to try what you said now, wish me luck lol 2 months of nonstop trying to fix it.
Stuck at updating signature again I even tried a different ruu version.
