Okay, this is a total Noob question and sorry for my own lack of knowledge.... Hope to just get what I need and then go for the gold.
I bought this HTC Evo 4G as a jailbroken and rooted unit and have been running it on the Boost Mobile network for over a year now. I'm having major problems with battery life, updates, etc, etc... And, want to Flash the ROM and wipe this sucker clean and start over with the latest and greatest version of Android OS.
I've picked a ROM off this site from a developer I want to try out. If I don't like it, I'll try another!
I have a hosted exchange service so can easily re-import all my contacts and numbers, and I've backed up my mission critical apps with Titanium backup. I know the data will get wiped, and I really want to wipe everything and start over. HOWEVER, I want to make sure the memory settings of my network plan with my phone number and provisions to use it on the Boost network remain.
I have a few friends who flash all the time, and so I'm guessing all these will remain, but I want to make sure and I'm also not sure how.
Any brief explanation or if someone can point me to where I can easily get this info, that would be great!!!
Somone on here mentioned an introductory video for first time ROM flash?? Any info helpful.
Everyone says it's a little scary the first time, which keeps most people from ever tweaking their ROM, but that once you get over the "fear factor" it's really not a big deal.
Hipkat has a pretty good guide that should answer most of your questions regarding ROM flashing. Find it in the link below. As far as your settings go, flashing a new ROM won't affect the settings you have for it to be flashed to a different carrier.

You should also make a backup in recovery prior to flashing just in case things go sideways and you need to revert to it. Make sure your battery is at least halfway charged, too.

Thanks for posting... This was all very informative and watched a few other YouTube videos. Here's where I'm at... Still trying to figure out how to get Amon MOD Recovery. Could not find it in the Android Marketplace, so maybe I just have to download to my desktop and move it over to to the SD card manually. I'll do this later tonight.
I need to make a Nandroid backup of my current settings (which it looks like I can do in Amon Ra?)
And, is my MSL (Master Subsidy Lock code) necessary to have?? I tried obtaining it through Android Terminal command and the GetMyMSL app, and neither one worked! The code came back as 00000 when using GetMyMSL.
I bought this phone well over a year ago and it was jailbroken and rooted already by the Ebay seller for use on the Boost Mobile network as it was a Sprint exclusive phone, so maybe this has been bypassed?
Search for Smelkus recovery here on XDA. Follow the instructions listed to install it on your phone.
Your MSL isn't necessary for basic rooting & flashing purposes.

Thanks for the info.
Okay, I downloaded Amon Recovery and put it on the SD card, followed the excellent instructions linked above and created a Nandroid backup. I just selected the top three options, (Boot, System and Data) and left cache, sd-ext, and recovery blank and created the backup file. I moved the file to my PC just in case it wiped it off my SD card as an extra measure of safety.
I really don't think I'll need it anymore, but again, just in case all hell brakes loose.
My main question is that I have the new ROM file on my computer desktop... Should I move it to the SD card prior to clearing it out?
One more question is what is the HBoot and is there a newer version I should be using?
I did already install AmonRa so not sure if this is really necessary if I have that.
Also, since this is the first time going to a custom Non-Sense ROM, It was explained that I should partition the SD card. I decided to back up everything to my laptop, so I can manually add it back on the SD card later, but I wonder if this complicates things.

The newest Hboot is 2.18. If your Hboot is older, there is no need to update. As far as partitioning your SD card, it can be done through recovery, but the process will wipe the card clean, which is why it's recommended to backup everything to your computer.

Great! I just backed up EVERYTHING on the SD to my computer. I'm ready to partition and install the new ROM!
I am following this procedure, which is very thorough, but seems like it has lots of extra bits I'm not sure are necessary. My biggest concern at this point is will my GPS work??? I'm seeing a "fix" of some sort here, but seems to require an MSL code, which mine doesn't have. I'm hoping this won't be a problem!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1386911
Okay, so I've partitioned the SD card, but when I went to do this step....
"Once the process is complete, select Upgrade EXT 2 to EXT 3. Do not use EXT 4 On Sense ROMS. DEFINITELY use EXT4 on newer AOSP ROMS. Your SD Card is now partitioned and you’re ready to restore your backup and flash your custom ROM so back out, go to USB-MS Toggle, select it and copy everything from the EVO Backup folder on your computer, back to your SD Card."
It didn't work... This is the error message I get... "Oops... Something went wrong! Please check the recovery log."
Is this necessary once the SD card has been partitioned? Please advise.
I am using an AOSP ROM, so how to I upgrade to Ext 4?
It seems like once this is done, I am ready to carryover the backup files from my PC, wipe, and install the new ROM.
So, the first ROM I tried failed, so I tried another and it worked beautifully.
So... I'm having a few more questions as I go to get it set up.
1) I use a hosted exchange service for my work and I had trouble getting this set up using the ROM. I was hoping to see an ActiveSync option. Should I download some sort of ActiveSync app to do this??
2) I have a Gmail account that I use for everything, but it's so full of $h*&t that I don't use the email account anymore. Of course, Google being the online superpower, I'd love to get a hold of a human being there that could help me... I'd like to get a new Gmail account and then close my old one, but some how merge all my other bits (Picasaweb, Voice, and all of my Chrome settings to the new address.
I don't want to use the Gmail address with this one, as previously it was throwing all of these random Gmail contacts who I don't even know who they are into my contacts list. I don't want to use that address for Mail or Contacts on my phone!
Last, but not least....
3) I backed up all the apps I cared about with Titanium Backup and saved them to the SD card. So, how do I reload that application off the SD card and restore the apps I had previously backed up through that application???
And, is there an HTC Sense style Android Weather widget for AOSP ROM's??
I'd like to get something that is visually a lot better looking than this crappy Weather channel widget that came with my ROM. YuK!
I am not sure about your first two questions, but to get back data saved with Titanium Backup, just download it from Google Play, click the backup/restore tab and look for your app. The name should be crossed out ( unless you already reinstalled it). Click on it and click restore and then app+data.
Here is a weather widget:

So I have been rooted for the past 8 hrs.
I went from the original july 5th evo 1.32 to 2.2 froyo rooted.
Now throughout this process - actually awhile back, I deleted some folders (audio, pictures) from the SD.
what I would like to do is to get my SD card back to original factory SD.
all the files/folder and if possible to 1.32 root or unrooted.
Basically I would like to start from scratch and with the knowledge gained, I can optimize and learn more about the system.
is this possible?
I dont care if I lose all my apps and whatnot I have gained. I would like to go as if I have just purchased the phone from day 1.
wow
dude i think the apps will just create a folder on the sd card for you so if you really want to just format the sd card then turn on your phone and use it, i think that is what you are talking about?

"you must be the change you wish to see in the world"
Could just format your sd card to wipe it, then do a factory rest on your phone. Don't see how going back to a 1.32 rom is going to matter. When you do that your phone will create the stock folders on the sd card on boot.
However if you wanted to do it your way, I believe you would have to load a 1.42 rom first then run the 1.36 ruu.
All advice in the post is brought to you by an android noob so take it as it is.
Well It seems my HTC.gallery isn't working, I can't get to my wallpaper and some system setting is force closing. Not sure if I deleted important files/folder or advance task killer f'ed it up. Lastly I just got the xda app and it says this was done by pc36100??? Why doesn't it say evo?

there is nothing important on the sdcard when you first get it. If youre getting force close (FC) errors, then check with the rom documentation, perhaps you missed a step or perhaps its a know bug. the XDA app goes by the name of the phone (i think) which is the PC36100, just change the signature part in the settings.
If you go to menu -> settings in the xda app you can make your sig say whatever you want. It's currently set to the default sig which displays the model number. This can also be found under your battery if you take it out (if my memory is right).
If you're having problems and want stock just install a stock 2.2 rooted rom. Should solve any of your issues. Like was stated in the post before this, make sure you read the rom install instructions, some you need to do wipes.
Also if you're using the 3d gallery from the n1 (i think) I believe there is an issue with it fc if opened in portrait mode. Open in landscape and then you can rotate to portrait.
it dosent say evo because

MAJOR HELP NEEDED PLEASE.
Basic Info
Im rooted, nand unlocked and was on fresh. I nandroid backup into Ava-FroyoV5 Rom
From there I unmounted my SD and formatted.
Followed by Factory Reset.
Phone boots up, I enter back into Ava-FroyoV5
I connect my phone to the PC to view the SD - as expected everything gone.
I downloaded strong file manager to confirm, it's confirmed.
But how/why did my phone manage to boot than since the pc36img file is gone?
or the Ava-FroyoV5.zip is gone? Why is my phone working and not stuck???
I made sure to view all hidden files in the SD and it shows the following folders:
.android_secure
downloads
LOST.dir
so now my question is - am I STILL ROOTED???
if not, what do I do now?
If I am;
where can I get a 1.32 or 2.2 stock rom? All the 1.32 rom links are dead and I can't seem to find a stock 2.2 rom.
Lastly - let's assume where I am right now, with AVA-froyoV5 - can I download titanium backup and get my stuff back since I had them backed up??? I dont see how but than again I dont see how my phone read ava-froyov5....
bump - changed my last post to something else - urgent help, read above, sorry n thanks
Yes you should still be rooted. Once the pc36img file was flashes to the phone it no longer needs to be on the card. That is also why your phone booted with no problems. You should be able to find a stock rooted 2.2 in the development forum. I'm pretty sure Netarchy and Steelh both have it posted.

Never used Titanium Backup, did you back up to sd card or online? If you backed it up to your sd card and did not back up your card before you formatted it the info is gone. Any alps you had purchased should show up in the Market so you can redownload them.

thanks, was wondering how powerful titanium was, if it was able to bring it back, but it doesnt.
No loss - i wanted to get everything original but rooted and I have achieved that.
But now im still lost in the logic of, how did my phone boot up?
the way im thinking in my head is:
I format my Harddrive, thus removing windows
yet when I turn on my computer, it loads into windows
But I haven't installed windows after the format.
So how did it find Ava-FroyoV5 (bootloader???)
Will it be able to find the Fresh Rom as well?? (I was scared to turn the phone off and thought I got lucky here)

Since Ava was the last time you were running, it was stored on the phone not on the sd card, same as if you were to boot and unrooted phone wo an ad card it would still boot the stock 2.1 or 2.2. The phone always searches for a pc36img file on reboot but doesn't need one to boot into the os.

so than, how do I get access to the internal memory???
Should be able to access it via ADB or possibly through a terminal emulator. What are you trying to do?

exploring atm. just learning how the phone works.
Like a human anatomy.
Most unrooted ppl enjoys how the body works, the structure, bones.
Rooted (SD) are the blood, veins, organs
Internal memory are the inside of organs, the blood cells, etc
so im just learning right now.
Also I'd probably want to delete stuff in there perhaps?
I just got my stock 2.2 root rom which will be my fallback to anything I mess up on.
I guess my end goal is to see how a rom works and how the phone works. Than if possible, to make my own mod (if its easy)
Or to find a rom that has the bare bones.
removed all default images (live, static wallpapers, audio, etc)
removed all apps that can be downloaded on market if needs be.
basically bare bones with the fast/power engines, tires, transmission that makes the phone (car) run.
Leave the styling, seats, weight, etc to me.
Gotcha, check out Cyanogen or one of the AOSP roms if you want the highest possible performance.

I originally posted this in the Q/A section but no one seemed to have any reasonable answer.
Is it possible to partition my SD card so I can have baked snack on 1 half and CM6 on the other with all their user options ect.... saved to that respective side of the card? I'm not really wanting a true dual boot here but I would like to maybe nand backup my backed snack save it to backed snack's partition. Then flash cm6 and kernel ect.. and already have all my apps settings in place. Or maybe even partition the internal mem so we could have a true dual boot. Is it possible to partition the internal mem and perhaps mess around with the boot loader in order choose which partition you will be booting from?

Did you try using both NAND and Titanium backups? If you make two backups, one for each ROM, you should be able to recover everything fairly easily when you want to go back and forth.
I suppose it would be possible. Stuff would load pretty slow though and you'd have to manually create such a setup. I haven't looked at the bootstrapping, but I can't think of any reason you couldn't mount the data heavy positions from the sdcard. Not easy by most people though.

i asked for this a few months back and was told to just use rom manager. make backups of both roms and just use that to go between them. dual booting isnt possible with our boot loader.
OP, without getting too "techy", what's being overlooked is the fact that you'd have to get into the BIOS itself end change where it loads the os from for it to work.
Also, in theory, with the os running from the SD card, things like mounting the phone as a disk drive would be impossible without turning the phone off, and that would just suck...
It's a cool idea, but I think having everything draw from.one source would make it lag like hell even, so I dunno.... I don't really get your reasoning behind switching between different roms on a constant basis, but I'd think about the cons too
All spelling errors thanks to xt9 on my Evo!

Not to get off op topic but how do you get rid off the nand backups on the phone. Have a few on roms I don't use anymore.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
you can get rid of backups a few ways if you use rom manager you can just go to manage and retore roms long clikc it and select delete. if you dont use rom manager youc an set your device to disck drive while hooked up tot he pc and manually navigate to the back up and delete it.
In reality, you could make as many NAND backups as you want, and restore any of of them from recovery whenever you want!

Would you not need to constantly update the nand backups?
Also...if I were to do this with say CM6 and something else...would I have 4G issues from flipping back and forth? I know CM6 doesn't have 4G and want to make sure it's just missing, not that it messed with the radio.
Alrigh then I guess I'll just give up on this and do it the old fashion way with band and titanium back ups. Am I going to need the full version of titanium for this? Will it make the whole process alot quicker?
Seriously, lol..
I am coming from a CE device and going to android is a little bit of a learning curve.. Not that its harder but its different obviously.
What I am asking basically.. All these guides that are written out talk about things as if we already know them..
Don't get me wrong, they are written great, but I don't know certain lingo.. For example I am really wanting to install a ROM.. Just got my evo a few weeks ago, Rooted it and thats it.. Looking into Roms and reading the instructions, its like "WHATTT??"
Sure they explain how to do it, but they don't explain in detail certain steps.. It happens as many people assume they should know..
For example (and they are all like this)
I am looking at the FRESH'S rom.. Seems like a good Rom from what I read, but looking at the instructions for just the Radio
http://geekfor.me/faq/flash-radio/
2) Boot in to RA and pick “Flash zip from sdcard”
RA?? What is RA??
Before these instructions it says "Don’t flash this unless you have a CDMA Evo 4g"
I am sure most people know what CDMA is, but I don't.. Have no Idea, lol
I am basically hoping there is a guide "FOR IDIOTS"
Thanks all
ra is a recovery, you can have either clockworkmod or amon_ra, they both do the same so its personal choice.
cdma is type of network, ie sprint, verizon, cricket. gsm is the other, ie att etc.
now that your phone is rooted, make a backup before anything else. you boot into recovery by turning the phone off, then give it 5 secs then hold Volume down button and then pressing the power button, when it responds you can let go. wait for img file checks to finish then press volume down once to highlight recovery and press power to select. you will now be in recovery. go into nandroid and make a backup.
you can use rom manager from the market to flash many roms however the fresh and damagecontrol links are currently erroring.
before flashing any roms be sure to wipe data and cache either in recovery if done manually or by checking the box in rom manager
Anyone wanna help a fellow brotha out and make a quick 10 bucks.. Lunch money at least.. Just to call me and maybe walk me through some of it, or atleast verbally explain some things
Paypal will be done right away..
Id really appreciate it..
install rom manager, you can make a backup through it. its an automated app, tell it what to do and it will boot into recovery and do it then reboot again
Have Rom manager.. I just did a "boot into Recovery" I then did a nandroid backup.. But why? I did this with Titanum.. How many back ups do I need? This is where I get confused..
I did a couple things with Titanuim and it took like 600 megs of space, now I am doing what seems like the same thing with nandiod back up?
Now, do I just unzip both the fresh rom and the radio, put it in a folder on my Sdisk, open rom manager, choose manually install or whatever it says, and point it to the unzipped Fresh Rom??
If yes, then how do I do the radio?
THANKS
Also, I know my apps will be gone by doing a root, and I could just download then again,,, (correct??)
What about my contacts and pictures and videos??
THanks
you don't unzip the rom, and you shouldnt need the new radio, put the fresh zip on your sd card and in rom manage tell it to flash it and check wipe data and cache.
you can always redownload your apps from the market, purchased ones stay purchased
no loss of pics or vids. sd card isnt wiped
you can check your current baseband version and if its the same then your already set

Titanium will backup your apps and app data too if you want. When flashing a new ROM you can download titanium from the market and then restore all of your apps.
Doing a nandroid backup in essence takes a snapshot of what your phone looks like at that point in time (apps, user preferences, theme, etc) and saves it. At any point later on, after trying different ROMs, changing settings, etc you can revert to that nandroid backup and restore it. Doing so will bring your phone back to that exact state when you performed the nandroid as if you never did any of the changes afterward.
And a lot of your questions can probably be answered in the post linked in my sig.

If I feel to revert back to stock and use the "nandroid" back up, will it back up the radio I had then too??
Looks Like I am done... That was nice and easy (thanks to Rom manager)
I am now going to install the radio that was recommended.. Can I use Rom manager for that too??
in TitaniumBackup (tiB) ... go to Batch .. Backup all user apps
(i would suggest purchasing tiB. the paid version is MUCH faster and you won't have to click on each app to restore it. i also like that you can create a flashable zip file for your backup. ie: an update.zip file. it's under the the "More" section.)
i would suggest using Amon_RA as your loader. here is the thread to review it http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=705026&highlight=amon_ra
do a nandroid. (don't forget to copy a nandroid onto your computer once in a while...having ur nandroid exist only on ur sdcard sux if you lose ur phone or ur card melts)
- between ROMs..do a full wipe. (ie: From Fresh to BakedSnack or CM6) just do it. it will save you stress and irritation. it will also help you streamline your recovery process and develop overall familiarity with the system.
- when upgrading a ROM (ie: Fresh 3.1 to Fresh 3.1.1 or 3.2) usually you can just wipe your Cache and DalvikCache (always read the FirstPost of your ROM ... some times you need to full wipe)
- Flashing a kernel can have significant impacts on your device. always flash Cache and DalvickCache. always have a good nandriod ready. always be plugged in or have >50% battery. always in this case means...not technically "Required", but don't cry to me if something goes awry.
the tiB will restore your applications but not settings. some apps like launcherPRO OR adw.Launcher or SMSbacup+ etc will allow you to export your settings. then you simply import your settings when needed. usually works quite well.
the nandroid is more like a 'Ghost Image' we use on computers. it will allow you to recover your devices almost 100% to the point it was when the image was taken. similar to tiB but diferent. tiB backups up the apps. nandroid backs up the whole system.
check this thread for Radios... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=715485
yes, you will flash the radio zips in the recovery console as well
this is a combo zip and should work fine http://www.mediafire.com/file/ry3k8....00.09.01_WiMAX_26023_R01_PRI_NV_1.77_003.zip
OK.. Now that I have FRESH ROM.. I would like to get a theme.. Right? Isn't this what most people do after a Root,Rom,Radio, Theme??
Thanks
Umm this is not good.. where are all my contacts? I was under the impression they would stay.. How do I get them back? I did a nandroid back up and a Titanium too.. Where did they go? Or should I just sync to my computer again?
Thanks
if your contacts are synced to gmail they will appear shortly after sync, if you have them on your computer you can sync them that way
once the radio is current you don't have to update it again, it won't be downgraded with flashing roms
I have already Unlocked my phone, all went very well and very easy to do, I am now looking into "rooting" it, I found this guide and was wondering, is this the right guide for my phone.
http://onexroot.com/one-x-root/how-to-root-one-x/
I only got mine a few days ago, it is on the latest firmware, as far as I know, and after 10 mins of phone getting switched on, I had an update to do, that all completed to.
Would appreciate any and all help, I know you guys do a fantastic job and it's great to see the combination of knowledge sharing and working along side "hackers"/developers and even sometimes the mighty manufacturers, to bring the best functionality and usability.

Well since your already unlocked, just head here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1594819
and get the latest clockworkmod recovery and fastboot flash it. once that is done boot into recovery & make a backup. now on to the fun stuff. find the Rom you like & copy it to your internal storage. make sure to read the roms developers main few posts. they all will have there own instructions on how to flash there rom properly. Now keep in mind that all roms on here are pre rooted so no need to "root" your device before hand. just boot to fastboot, flash the roms boot.img. then to recovery, perform a full wipe (data,& system)and flash the rom. once booted your done set it up & enjoy
p.s. here is a great sticky to read thru, it has every link your ever gonna need to read up on the device & how to properly do everything if your unsure of what your doing. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1603905
Hi there, thanks for the quick reply, when I do the cwm, will this wipe my sdcard. Is there an exact guide on how to do the cwm or any precautions to do before hand.
What are the commands for accessing phone to do this please, I know it's "cd " something.
Just don't want to brick it, this thing is a beautiful thing.
Okies, I have installed cwm via using the auto installer, it works a dream, "Props to dev for this" I am now doing a backup, will this backup everything on phone and sd card or just the phone internal/rom, if not is there a tool, that backs up everything, internal and sd storage to one image, that can be re flashed, if things go wrong.
As the recovery image gets stored on phone, I have made 2 backups and would like to delete 1 of them, how is this done. Many thanks in advance

Nothing will back up your sd card. So never wipe it unless you need to. I copy all my card data to my pc for safe keeping just incase.

Many thanks, I found the 2 backup images and left one there, many thanks for the advice.
Hi there, I use a proggy called Wondershare MobileGo I have backed up everything, contents wise, contacts, videos, music, sms and contacts, will I need to clone my sd card, if so do I do it with CWM and can I send it to my pc via that.
So I currently have a Galaxy note 2. I have to send it to Samsung to repair and plan to use my old Evo 4G as a backup.
So here is my issue. I am on sprint and will need a sense rom in order to update my profile to get data working. I thought it would be easy to flash to sense for 5 minutes and then go back to CM7. NOPE!
I have been working on this from noon and it is now 9:00. I rarely see a blue link in my google searches now.
One of the first few things I found was this page: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=865204
I went down to the part "How do I return to stock?" and clicked it. On that page, I downloaded the PC36IMG.zip
For some reason, hboot will just not flash it. When I go into hboot, it scans and starts reading PC36IMG.zip and after about 12-20 minutes, it just goes to another hboot menu where the only options are to reboot. It doesn't even give an error.
After a few hours of trying that and some clockwork mod flashing, nothing is taking.
I went back to digging through google and the forums here and came across http://forum.xda-developers.com/wik...id#Android_Flashing_Guide_.28with_fastboot.29
I have adb working everywhere except in fast boot. As far as I can tell windows recognizes it perfectly fine. Adb just cant see it.
A few hours later, I have come across http://wiki.rootzwiki.com/HTC_EVO_4G_Downloads
This looks like it would be perfect, if all the links weren't dead
So Here I am. I am looking for a method to flash back to stock for just 5 minutes to update the stupid profile. I have exhausted google and the forum search and have not come any closer to my goal in 9 hours.
Here is all the info about my phone:
Sprint HTC EVO 4G
Hboot version: 2.10.0001
Radio: 2.15.00.11.19
S-OFF
Cyanogenmod7.2
I am trying to get to any sense rom via any method. Preferably a clockworkmod update.zip or backup even.
Am I missing something obvious?
I am not new to rooting at all, I just haven't done it in about a year.
Thanks.
You're working too hard.
Ignore any guide that refers to a PC3xxxx zip. That's the nuclear option. You don't need that (and you're lucky you didn't break anything trying it).
Just download any sense ROM.
Try the latest rooted stock ROM:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=26516892
If you can flash CM you can flash this.
Basic steps:
Download it (either odex or deodex doesn't matter)
Check md5
Put it somewhere on your SD card that's easy to find (any directory will do, but you don't want to have to hunt around for it all day in recovery)
Make a nandroid
Wipe everything *except* your SD card
If you are using clockwork, wipe everything again. [Editorial note: Clockwork sucks on Evos]
Flash the zip
Reboot
If it works, great; let it sit for awhile, then do whatever you have to do
If it doesn't work, nandroid back and ask for further assistance

The only reason that the bootloader wouldnt recognize the PC36IMG.zip would be because your sdcard is not formatted to FAT32
But thats just info for you, use what the guy above said, its really not difficult because you can flash ANY sense rom, not just 100% stock

that reminds me of the one thing i left out of my 1st post: Truly the *only* bad thing you can do that matters in this world is to erase pictures of your kid's first baby steps or other irreplaceable data from the SD card. the rest of it is just wasted money or time.
in recovery do *not* turn off your brain and wipe the entire SD card.
if you *are* going to nuke your SD card (for instance if you have to reformat it because it has the wrong filesystem ) obviously make sure you have a backup first.
the rest of the discussion is really unimportant in the cosmic sense of things.
you flashed CM7? you still have S-OFF? then don't worry. you got this. take a deep breath, have a drink, enhance your calm, flash a ROM.

Not surprised I overthought it. I'll go through what you suggested.
Also no worries about the SD card, I havent used this phone for a while and took anything of value off of it long ago.

You rock! Thanks so much! I knew it had to be simple.
I nearly had a heart attack though, I booted into recovery and formatted everything, then noticed I never put the sd card in. Had a bit of panic before I realized that clockworkmod is not erased by formatting

Hmm actually, it looks like it only fixed half of my issues. For some reason it is unable to update the profile. Do you think I need up update my radio? I have never had to do that and am totally clueless about it
what's the error when updating profile? 1012?
is it absolutely necessary to update your profile to accomplish what you're trying to do? is data working? can you use wifi in the mean time?
that radio is a pre-gingerbread radio, it is true. note the only way to truly "brick" a phone is a failed radio update, so i might try everything else first.
if you simply must flash radio, then yes, you are *now* entering the world where you may need to place a PC36IMG.zip in the root of your SD card and run it from the bootloader.
check out http://themikmik.com/showthread.php?8477-Radio-Update-1-21-2012-2-15-00-12-19 for the appropriate files and maybe read a few pages at the beginning and end of that thread just to reassure yourself you know what you are doing.
but before i tried all that, i might just reboot, let it simmer for a bit, try again tomorrow. 1012 can be intermittent.
in a worst case scenario, find out your MSL (download MSL reader from app store or just call sprint and sweet talk a customer service rep. they'll usually tell you if they think you're not evil) and undertake the very serious step of blasting your phone back in to "hands-free activation" mode. this is accomplished by dialing ##72786# and then providing your MSL to reset. this really and truly wipes any knowledge this phone ever had of its previous relationship to sprint. then call sprint and re-activate your phone.

Just tried again, it is 1012. Just wondering, but does the phone actually need to be active on the line for it to update right? I haven't had it switched over yet so that might be why...
Can I give you a little advice?? Please get away from Clockwork Mod. It's not a good recovery option for the EVO. I know it is for most other phones, but for the EVO, you want an Amon Ra based recovery. Specifically, I'd go with Smelkus Amon Ra style Recovery. That and the newest radios are in my dev-host.
Also, click the link for my guide in my signature and go over that before you do anything else. It's a little dated ,but for what you want to do, it'll help you out, a lot

you say clockwork sucks on evo. what should I be running.? I'm using sensuASOP 2.55 but I'm not sure if I like it I need to update the prl and not. sure how to do it
What does updating the PRL get you? Sprint PRL's for the frequencies used by the OG Evo haven't really changed in most areas for a long time. Not sure why this is so important to everyone but maybe I'm missing something.
Anyways, as for recovery, it's not *required* to use a different recovery. If you have clockwork, go ahead, do what you need to do, just be sure to repeat any wiping steps one or two extra times because clockwork does not always wipe successfully on the first try. (Historical note: there was a brief time when Evos could lose their WiMax keys because of clockword mod, but that is not as likely to happen these days. Still, that plus the unreliable wiping thing is basically why Evo owners hate clockwork always and forever.)
The post immediately before yours gives a recommendation about alternatives to clockwork. If you will be keeping your Evo for any length of time, change your recovery to Amon Ra or SmelkusMod as soon as you have a convenient time.
can u tell me how to install smelkus? do I have to uninstall clockwork? and then install smelkus. could u point. me somewhere. Im running sensuASOP 2.55 with clockwork and I tried to El smelkus recovery but I use fastboot and it just stalls out on parsing pc36img there's a few different links on his dl. page I tried the Mason g.zip I tried flashing it in recovery and it says installation. aborted how do I get clockwork. off and smelkus on?
