If you can't tether thru your T-Mobile tether plan or can't use WiFi calling then you are not using T-Mobile/Samsung's (manufacture/carrier) rooted or non-rooted stock roms. You are using an ASOP rom.
The answer is to use a stock rooted or non-rooted rom. The first thread link will take you to mrRobinson's root66 root injected stock rom. Everything you need is there. The other thread will give you other options.

When it comes to using USB dongle to read/write to USB drives & external hard drives I find Samsung's Micro USB to USB Adapter (ET-R205UBEG) or Samsung's Smart Dock Multimedia Hub (EDD-S20JWEGSTA) works fine with Galaxy Note 2. Micro USB to USB Adapter doesn't allow you to charge while using, but is completely mobile. While Samsung's Smart Dock Multimedia Hub allows you to charge while using as an USB dongle.

FYI - You should do your homework before rooting & rom.
Yes, 4.1.x, 4.2.x and maybe soon 4.3.x are Jelly Bean Android OSes. But that has nothing to do with your issue. It is what Samsung and T-Mobile adds to your Galaxy Note 2 that has to do with this issue. Read above for more info on that.
PS - If there is an ASOP rom that allow you to do this, then more power to you. But usually stay with manufacture/carrier roms to have such functions.

Dongle
The dongle i am referencing is the samsung allshare wireless hub that allows you to see what is on your phone on the t.v. wireless instead of using the mhl adapter. Also , i tried xda tether instructions and it didnt work. When i use root66 will that erase my info on the phone. i am trying to save my text messages

Then use the "Allshare Wireless Hub" name. Too many things are considered as a "dongle". The last thing comes to mind when you say "dongle" is "Allshare Wireless Hub".
"Allshare Wireless Hub" may not work with custom AOSP roms. Custom AOSP roms don't have everything that Samsung and carrier put into the stock rom. That is why you may need to use stock based rom, rather be rooted or not. You will lose everything on the device when flashing back to stock rom. Best to go back to non-rooted stock rom, then flash root66, injected root stock rom. Follow the information from mrRobinson. You can use an app like "Backup to Gmail" to backup your text messages beforehand. Then restore with the same app afterwards.

Yes, I agree.
I was trying to say that to the OP in a nice way, by saying "may not".
Question: Which displays do and don't work with the Allshare Wireless Hub? I know that the Smart Dock supports displays that support 1080p. I heard that Allshare Wireless Hub users got it working with more displays than Smart Dock. Smart Dock seems to be much more strict with what displays it supports. I know that Allshare Wireless Hub doesn't support all displays. But I just don't know where that line is.

Samsung
First of all I AM NOT A DUDE. SECONDLY , YOU are wasting energy by being rude.

AllshareCast Dongle S/W update today

I got a notice to download the "AllshareCast Dongle S/W Update" to version LJ02 today. I don't have an AllshareCast dongle and I didn't even know that this app was installed on my phone. I'm wondering why they've pushed it out to everybody (I assume), since I imagine that only a tiny number of people have the app. Seems like it would make sense to install it only for people who actually have the dongle.
I'm thinking about uninstalling or freezing it. Has anybody else received it? Any thoughts?
I received the update last night around 130 am eastern........ Had no clue what it was. I am going to delete in a few minutes

It's supposed to allow the GS3 to update the software on the Allcast dongle that you can attach to TVs and such for device mirroring.

The update is showing as not compatible with my SGS3 if I look at it on the Play Store. Dunno if it's a region thing or the fact I'm rooted with stock?
I'm keen to try this update on my Allshare dongle. Would anyone be able to extract the APK for this update?

Are you on LH9? It seems to only work on LH9 and LI5.
It's not an ATT GS3, so it's not got that firmware on it, but is the latest stock for my region, as far as I know (UK).
I was hoping the APK alone might still work, as it appears to be updating the Allcast dongle itself, rather than being tied to anything on the phone, hardware-wise.
Perhaps Samsung are rolling it out to a select few 'test' firmwares first? I believe I'm on LJ4, but I'm not up on Samsung's firmware terminology - not needed to really stray from rooted stock on this phone.
If you're able to extract the APK, it would be much appreciated

This is a legitimate Samsung update and it is a part of the function that allows you to share the screen with Dlna enabled devices such as blue ray players, wdtv (and other streaming boxes) and hdtv with the function.

Are you sure about that? What you're describing sounds like "AllShare Play" which is a completely different app. Where did you get your information that this app has some connection to DLNA?
I have been using the all share dongle. It is just as described as above. I mirror my phone thru the dongle to and TV with a HDMI port. Or Samsung devices. Play videos games whatever. All share play let's you remote control devices from your phone. All share dongle does work thru some type of dlna service from what I read on Samsung site and other places.
I was using this feature before the update was put out. It now shows up as a installed app. Before the update it was just something you could turn on in settings and still is.
It's the pre configured scan portion for the $90 wifi dongle that you buy to connect to hdmi port on projectors and hdtv displays and or the software for your computer that allows you to share via wifi or Internet.
I bought the MHL connection and carry a cable so when I am in hotels I watch what I want (netflix, Hulu) while the phone charges.
But the address of the developer is legit.

I'm sure that the update is legit. I just want to avoid confusion and misinformation about what it's for:
The Allshare Cast Dongle app supports the Allshare Cast Dongle
The Allshare Play app provides DLNA connectivity to DLNA-capable devices
I believe that the Allshare Cast Dongle does not use DLNA and that this update has no relationship to the Allshare Play app or to DLNA capability. If anybody has good evidence to the contrary, please post it.
That being said, my guess is that this new update being pushed out is useless to the great majority of us who don't have the dongle.
I'm pretty sure All Share Cast is Samsung's version of Miracast.

That's exactly what it is, I don't think the dongle uses DLNA at all.
I've found that this update has been changed to be compatible with my phone (stock UK GS3) over the last few days. It originally was shown as not compatible.
It basically prompts you to update your Allshare Cast dongle firmware when you next connect to it. It updates the dongle firmware - wirelessly - to version LJ02, which appears to have made the dongle connection much more stable, and quicker to establish.
OK, so I installed the update, then uninstalled it when I saw that it was useless for me. Now, I am getting a perpetual update notice in Google Play. Does anybody know a way to make the update notice go away without actually installing the app? The only way I can think of is to install it and then freeze it, but that seems like a waste.

I just had a quick back and forth with Samsung. It is Not a official app. All official app can be found at www.Samsungapps.com.
Edit: seems that Samsung isn't sure it is or not.... They talked with someone else who says that it is valid. XDA has it marked as bloatware that can be removed.
Edit2: Lookout Security says they've been asked about it before and "We have encountered this in the past and Samsung has stated that this is their app via our contact." I'm requesting it be confirmed.
Edit3: A second person at Samsung support says it's not official and a 3P app.
It CAN be un installed with TI. First detach it from the market and then uninstall. It's actual name is com.sec.fwupgrade so don't be alarmed when it says that. I will be sending it to a couple of security vendors to include in malware lists and questioned Samsung why they have not had the app removed.

[Q] ARLiberator/AllShare Cast and my S3...

I rooted my S3 so I could use ARLiberator with the AppRadio2. I am using the AllShare Cast dongle with the AppRadio to make it all work wirelessly. After I rooted my phone, the AllShare Cast option in my settings was gone. So, (keep in mind I'm a noob) when I got the notice my phone was due for an Over the Air update, I did it. Good news, it didn't brick my phone and I got AllShare Cast back. Bad news, it took my root away.
So, I need to know where I can find a 100% stock image that just injects root that I can do via Odin. The only reason I have to root right now is to get this working with AppRadio. In the future I may get more crazy with other ROMs, but right now I just want this to work.
Can someone point me to a safe tar file that is the root for a stock image on the AT&T SGS-i747 that is the most current?
Thanks.
AND, if there's anything else I need to know, please inform away! The root I did last time didn't add to my counter, so I'm kinda hoping that any new root I do won't either. If it does, I guess that is okay as long as the triangle app I've read about can fix it.
Again, thanks for any and all input. I'm learning as fast as I can.

Take a look here, look for the stock image with root injected into it. I am also using Allshare Cast with Arliberator - how is it working out for you? I have some issues where my subwoofer will turn off sometimes, but if I press the menu button on the Appradio to launch voice commands, then click back, the subwoofer will turn on. Weird...
I've been eyeballing this setup. Do either of you have Tasker? I'm wondering if it can be setup so that I don't even have to take my phone out of my pocket. Do you have to manually press a button on the Allshare dongle every time you get in the car or will it connect automatically after the initial setup?
Thanks,
Bodie
As long as arliberator is running on the phone, it should connect automatically. MOST of the time. I've changed to the wired setup using the Samsung mhl adapter. I never got the sound quality to be good using the all share cast dongle. Since I really wanted to run Pandora, sirius xm and other music apps from my phone, this was really a bust for me. I also went through the counterfeit dongle issues. I bought one on Amazon and got all the snow issues I've read other people had. I went to Samsung's website and bought it directly through them, and I've had no problems since. I've been running it a week with that setup and have had no issues. It just works like it should. I had connection issues with all share cast With it stopping at random. I'm very hopeful that all my trial and error is over.

[Bounty] Allshare Cast Wireless Hub fix for rooted phones

It appears that regardless of the ROM or kernel, if your phone is rooted then the Allshare Cast Wireless Hub will not work. I've searched through nearly every Rom thread in the development section and I couldn't find anyone that has it working. I've tried resetting the flash counter to 0 via Triangle Away and tried using the stock rom and kernel to no avail. The wireless hub was a Christmas gift from my mother and I don't have the heart to take it back because as it stands now it's a $70 paper weight. I looked through the rules and it doesn't appear that these types of threads are against the rules. I'm hoping that someone can find a fix for this that will make it work on rooted phones. I'm even willing to send out my wireless hub to a developer if they don't have one so they can try to fix it.

I had one for a week before returning it to Amazon. It wasn't reliable for me. I seem to remember rooting being ok. However, the Rom and recovery would need to be stock. Maybe I remember wrong.

I'll match you hoffy, I would love to see the hub reliably fixed for our s3's without going back to stock.
I can only match you frustration. I have spent many hours trying myself and researching how to fix this only to find that it appears to be a problem within the kernel its self. With the Rom, kernel, and everything stock it works. I have tried on many threads to see if we could get a dev to pick this up with no avail. We have some great kernels out there and besides who wants to stay 100% stock or let's face it why would we be on Xda forums. I would be willing to donate as well. Their has to be some way to resolve the issue.

I might be misunderstanding the purpose of the hub - AllShare used to be a version of media streaming protocol, allowing devices like Xboxes and bluray players to stem media from your phone. Is the hub supposed to be a way of adding that capability to tvs that don't have it built in?
Or is it supposed to allow full screen sharing? (As in being able to see your home screen or play Angry Birds on your big screen, for example)

DLNA only does media streaming, not screen sharing.

The difference is that with media streaming, the file is played by the device being streamed to (streaming basically means that the file is played as it is downloaded, rather than waiting for the whole file to transfer before starting playback). The media must be prerecorded, so live interaction with an app is impossible (and tvs and bluray players have no idea what to do with an apk file).
Screen sharing is more like connecting a camera to your tv and pointing it at your phone's screen - the phone does all of the processing, which is why you can see the android interface and all of your apps in real time. It's basically like your phone is the computer and the tv is just the monitor.

Such screen sharing is just what I want. It allows you to use all the nice tools and apps on the phone, instead of the crude sequential slide shows one can see on the TV, for example. Also, sometimes I want to demo a program or show a map from my phone on the big screen, so others can see it happen (looking over one's shoulder isn't optimal!).
Allshare cast requires a additional accessories. Call a hub. It will then share your phone screen with other devices. Tv's. Cpu etc

Unfortunately, you won't be able to do that with a bluray player... If you can connect a computer to a display large enough for your needs (such as your tv), then you might be able to set up a vnc server on your phone and a vnc viewer on the computer. The setup might take some tweaking, especially to deal with screen rotation, and vnc is likely to have a slight lag... otherwise, it appears that the AllShare hub or a similar device (if one exists and is compatible) will be the only other way to do wireless screen sharing
On a semi related note, does anyone here know what the hdmi cable for the S3 will display on the external screen? In other words, does it share the screen or just media that is playing on the phone?

On a semi related note, does anyone here know what the hdmi cable for the S3 will display on the external screen? In other words, does it share the screen or just media that is playing on the phone?

It will share the screen, if you have the proper cable (and 5-11 pin adapter with some older cables); I have a Galaxy Note II, and that also works well sharing the screen. One can also use DLNA features to share media, but I find that screen sharing is much more convenient, since one has all the user interface advantage of the Android apps. I also would prefer if screen sharing could be done wireless. Samsung is being coy about this issue, I think, confusing everyone with the AllShare names, keeping the descriptions vague, etc. If one can share screen wirelessly with any Samsung Smart TV, even the latest, I haven't seen any posts to verify that. Some posts seem to imply that the "dongle" is needed only for older TVs, but that seems to be incorrect (and the dongle seems not to work well in any case from my reading). I would be happy to have these conclusions refuted.
AllShare Cast HUB mirrors everything u see on ur phone on ur tv. AllShare App streams pics, videos, music. Just like IMedia Share. Mirroring and Streaming are different.

Sprint Note 2 SPH-L900
The vid below is the only proof I was able to find of it working with a modified ROM. His kernel looks stock. I tried it with Whomp 2.6 with no luck although he is running 2.4 in this vid. I had already bought TriangleAway from PlayStore which did reset my flash counter on-screen without the resetting phone cycle it goes through otherwise but I think this was only when I had Perseus kernel or before I said yes to the MA7 update which failed anyway due to not being stock. Now that I set it back to stock kernel with stock boot loader TA will no longer visually reset my flash counter. I originally rooted with the Note2 toolkit and opted for adding the insecure boot image. I am going to try to just re-flash to complete stock and use CF auto and see how it goes. I just want to use my allshare cast dongle so I can keep the phone charged when screen sharing AND be rooted. Stupid to have to jump through so many hoops to use this dongle and some apps that only work if rooted.

**Update** I messed with it some more and tried to keep track of the variable steps I did to make it work for me. I left Whomp 2.6 installed and did a full wipe in stock boot-loader. I noticed after 1st boot before any updates or downloads happened that my device status reported as "normal". The 1st things I downloaded were my SuperSU Pro key and my paid Triangle Away. I ran Triangle Away which was no longer able to give an on-screen flash count in android on the stock kernel but it seems to do what it is supposed to do as it showed everything was stock in download mode. After I rebooted from the 1st run of Triangle Away I checked status which was in a long cycle of "scanning" only to end in "Modified" status. I finally got Allshare Cast to work like the vid above. I'm pretty sure you just need to check the box at the bottom for the system modified workaround in Triangle Away. Now I need to update to MA7 and see if I can still have everything work.
**Working great update** Whompasaurus 2.7.1 and stock bootloader and stock kernel. Think I may have taken the "long-cut" but I pretty much got it all working with this ROM and Triangle Away. Allshare Cast dongle is working great. Watched every episode of CHOSEN on Crackle on the TV. Somehow I broke Pie Navigation Control so I just re-installed the APK and it works again. Only thing that fails now is trying to use the ROMs wifi tether which crashes the phones Settings but at least with no lockup just a slight delay and back to normal just no launching of wifi tether. I will try to do the same for that. For now I have Klink usb that I bought a while ago.

Will the Allshare Cast dongle work with a CM 10.1 based rom?

I'm currently using an allshare cast dongle to mirror my phones display to a Pioneer Appradio2. Its an awesome setup but im stuck on a stock rooted rom because of the allshare cast. I thought I had read somewhere that someone was running CM10.1 with the allshare cast working. Can anyone confirm if it works or not?

Running the same setup as you with the Appradio and ARLiberator. I tried multiple TouchWiz roms and got a Jelly 'Beans' to work with Triangle Away. Finally I gave up and went to CM10.1. While messing around with settings, I figured out how to make this work! I'm using a VZW Galaxy SIII, so not sure if the CM build for your phone will be the same but try this:
Turn on the Allshare Cast dongle
On phone go to Settings > Display > Wireless Display
Turn Wireless Display ON
Tap on Dongle to connect
Hopefully that will get you up and running with CM10.1 and your Allshare Cast Dongle.

I have installed CM10.1 but I don't see a Wireless Display option in the Display settings. I have yet to go out to the car to see if it only appears when the Allshare Cast is turned on so I will give that a try. Thanks for the reply. I will report back later.

I have no problem getting the allshare cast to work with stock based roms using a stock kernel with the stock boot.img. You just have to run triangle away after flashing rom and boot.img.
I have no wireless display option in the settings>display menu using CM 10.1 for the note. Very weird that its not on the note 2 rom but it is on the s3 rom.

Damn worth trying. As I said I'm using a s3 so wasn't sure if it would work for you.
What if you go into settings>more.. Do you see an option there for miracast?

Yeah tried more but nothing. Guess I'll have to beg our devs to include the wireless display option if possible. Thanks for your help.

So how does this thing work? Are you supposed to connect your phone to your home wifi network to access the dongle? Do the two access each other through some sort of ad-hoc connection? I dont have home internet, I just tether from my cellphone, however I would like to start streaming hulu/netflix stuff using my cellphone to mirror the screen. Will these 2 devices be able to see each other and still use my cellular data?
UPDATE: Ok so I just grabbed one from the Verizon store to figure it out myself. Setup was a breeze, just plug the hub in, hit the button 1 time on the back (or until the LED turns blue) then go into settings/display/wireless display. You do not have to be on any kind of WiFi network, apparently the device and cellphone operate on their own independent spectrum or something. It saw the device immediately and took about 30 seconds to actually connect. Then the display started mirroring. Only problem was a little lag and some visual artifacting on screen. Enough that I'm actually taking it back for a refund, what a shame, really liked the concept.

[Q] Note 8 (N51XX) - Allshare Cast Dongle problem - Rooted stock rom

Hi,
I am using rooted stock rom from here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2332999
With this rom, I am unable to connect to my allshare Cast Dongle.
Then I found it might be about being rooted.
So, I applied the fix with TriangleAway to reset flash counter.
However, even after reset with Tirangleaway, the download screen shows flash counter 1.
I guess that's because of the behaviour of new bootloader.
But this way I still can't connect to my Allshare Cast Dongle.
It connects than says it's disconnected.
Is there anyone who successfully connects to allshare Cast Dongle from Note 8 ?
Is there anyone who successfully connects to allshare Cast Dongle from Note 8 with a rooted rom ?
Btw, I also installed stock recovery to have flash counter 0 but it didn't help.
Please help me.
This guide works on my note 8 w/ rooted stock + custom kernel..
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2165882
My device status stays "Official", that probably what is needed to get the allshare cast working.
EDIT:
apparently it doesn't work.
Flash counter need to be zero for allshare cast to work = stock kernel and recovery.
Darn samsung.

At least we know it works in some configuration .
Technically it wouldn't be a bad idea from a legal and membership perspective for Samsung to cause an HDCP or other fall on rooted devices.

I figured that's what you were saying after I posted my comment. Sorry I didn't mean to come across as a wise guy
I am thinking of getting the AllShareCast dongle and I have the N5100 which is rooted. It's just disappointing to hear that it doesn't work on a rooted device. Can anyone out there confirm that there is a way for it to work on a root? Are there alternate wireless HDMI dongles that work with the Note 8?
I need one for a big presentation next month.

I believe the Netgear PTV3000 or whatever it is and possibly the older model, should work as should Miracast capable dongles in general. YMMV however, especially over HDCP. I know the S3 and Nexus 4 Miracast take different details on it.
From a serious use perspective as someone that owns both Samsung's MHL and Miracast adapters, it's not a big loss unless you actually need the wireless. You can get 1080p30 out of the wired adapter and solid performance, despite the loss of the MicroUSB port, this is pretty good stuff. You can even use MultiWindow while using the MHL but not while using Miracast. Using the AllShare Cast dongle you can get 720p (I forget the frame rate) and a latency that slingshots wildly (even the best systems are still 60ms or worse I believe). On top of that because of the Wi-Fi direct connection, latency is going to be worse if your dongle isn't dual band and things that auto scale video quality to network bandwidth are liable to degrade.
Using the Samsung dongle, artifacts and codec issues are quite common, and the latency makes it only suitable for video playback and "Producitivty" apps. Gaming with it is a failure waiting to happen, in so much as something like Shadowgun or Dead Trigger goes. Where as it is very pleasent with the MHL adapter.

I'm surprised to see that there are others with same problem on Note 8 and Allshare Cast dongle.
Is there any Note 8 user with rooted rom and capable of using the dongle ?
Also, I didn't understand about the miracast discussion. as far as I know, our Note 8 does not have miracast software included. (at least with official samsung rom)
how do you use miracast ?
is Netgear PTV3000 a miracast client/dongle ?
What if you turn off root and make sure root app is in data and not in system /APP.
It is the same with readershub, if the superuser or supersu app is in system it wont work.
that is why in my custom rom I put it in data.

My custom kernel and in triangle away I use the option, reset at boot, this way on every reboot it stays at 0.
@civato
I noticed that. But then I wrote the last situation with your kernel and v2.90
But withthat config (v2.90 on your kernel) I am unable to reset the counter.
First of all, the app does not boot the device as in v3.0. It says the counter is reset but it does not reset. When I reopen the app or check on status I see flash counter 2.
btw, I've explained my problem in detail on your kernel thread at:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=43497005&posted=1#post43497005
can you check that please ? thx.

I'd appreciate any answers.
AllShare Cast is Samsung's name for Miracast or WiDi, much the same that AllShare Play (now Samsung Link) was their name for their DLNA software. The modern firmware supports Miracast, to my understanding the Netgear miracast dongles devices work and have better performing codecs. HDCP issues between the various dongles, TouchWiz, CyanogenMod, and Nexus ROMs cause some compatability issues. A couple CyanogenMod developers have posted at length about this on Google Plus: the HDCP differences between dongles/ROMs, what works with what, and the performance of the dongles and various phones hardware/firmware.
Basically if you're using "AllShare Cast", you are using Miracast.
I have not invested in the Netgear dongles for my own testing because the wired connection is best for my purposes (playing games and Netflix streaming). My Galaxy S3 and Note 8.0 are the only devices that I have that support Miracast, so I can't test the dongle with other stuff.
BTW the models of some Galaxy devices are certified Miracast (the GT-I9300 GS3 was, I assume the international S4's are).

Thanks for the information.
So, the Netgear dongle is in fact usable with Allshare Cast ?
Does it perform better ?
Does it have the issue with rooted firmwares ?
I am using rooted N5100 rom on a N5105 and Allshare Cast Dongle does not stay connected because the system is modified.
If Netgear doesn't have this problem I will order one.
As you can see my status with my custom rom and kernel.
I press the reset counter and it just resets it to 0.
No reboot needed.
If I reboot or even flash a new custom rom it stays at 0 because of the Option "Auto reset at boot".
I understand that it works on your N5100 but in fact my device is N5105.
it might be because that my device is in fact a N5105 and I use stock N5100 rom (there is no stock N5105 rom that I could find)
My bootloader says N5105 so the system sets flash counter when booting.
A possible solution would be changing bootloader making the deive completely N5100, but I don't know if that's possible. Is it ? How ?
