A few hours ago I noticed that the phone wasn't charging even though it was connected. So I did a few experiments: I put into into three different power outlets, I tried a different charger, I connected it to the computer but nothing happened (the computer didn't even recognize it). Then I decided to turn it off and try again, and these are the results: the screen turns on really often to let me know that it's charging, there's even the charging animation, but if I try to turn it on not only it isn't charged, but it doesn't seem to recognize the charger anymore.
There are a few other weird things, though: I use the XenonHD ROM, and once or twice when the phone was unplugged the battery icon was still "moving" as if the phone was charging, but the graph said that it wasn't. This probably is just a bug, but maybe it meant something.
My best guess is that the micro USB port is broken, but maybe you guys can help me with this?
Just like you said, your usb port is broken, propably a short circuit somewhere. But changing the charging port flex ribbon is very easy, even for a first timer (like I was/did a couple of weeks ago)

And now the phone charges if it's turned off... but it's not like I can keep it like this, so I'll take to technical support tomorrow. Do you think I should flash the stock ROM and/or lock the bootloader?

yes, flash the stock rom and relock

Hey,
(I tried searching for similar threads, but "charging" and "desire" gives me billions of results)
I have quite a sticky situation on my hands. Last night when I were to check my phone for messages, it was turned off. I grabbed my charger with the AC adapter and plugged it in. VoilĂ , amber led is turned on. I waited a while as I went off to grab food and that sorts, returned and turned it on. No problem so far. Small digression: I even got those messages I expected, hooorah!
Anyways, after a couple of hours I returned to my phone to check additional messages but then again, it was turned off. Even though it was hooked up to the AC adapter. I mean, the amber led is turned on and even the battery animation in the status bar when charged is doing its thing.
So I started trying to figure out what it is, but nothing have helped the slightest bit so far. I tried flashing different radios and roms but the problem seem to stick.
What's odd is that it allows charging sometimes, but it takes a long while. I have yet to find out the reason for it, but my doubts are that currently the phone needs to be off.
So far I think it could be a faulty USB cable that may cause the problem, but even though how obnoxiously stupid it may be, I turn my ears to you guys.
Thanks in advance.
TL;DR:
The phone isn't charging even though it's hooked up to the ac adapter and both amber led and animation in the status bar is indicating it's charging.

first things first,
search xda-developers re: USB brick. does it fit the symptoms?
do you have access to a different usb cable? does it charge better from this one?
will it charge quicker on on (for instance) your computer, compared to the wall charger?
is the charger an official charger or a third party one? if its a third party, no name brand one, chances are its crap. I bought a 1000mA rated car charger and one of the components won't let more than 100mA through.
Greetings, nzdcoy. Thanks for quick answer.
Let's see. As far as I can tell, USB brick symptoms sounds like you're unable to connect your phone using USB when booted into Android and/or custom boot/recovery. I have yet to try this, but I also read that they were able to charge the phone without problems. However, I'll give this a try seeing as it won't hurt.
I'm afraid I do not have access to another USB as these "micro" USB cables aren't that widespread. Or, at least I don't have leftovers as I do for regular USB cables.
It's hard to tell if it charges faster for whether possibilities as it doesn't charge at all if it's on. The amber led is lit, but the battery percentage still drops. I've only relied on the wall charger as I know it supports more amper than its PC counterpart. But yet again, I should try the USB brick fix. Hopefully it'll work.
Both the charger and the cable is stock, so I don't think it could be shabby third party components.
I'm also suspicious to if it can be the battery that's blasted. I've measured the voltage and it seems to be fine, so I don't know for sure. Maybe it's bad because it takes ages for it to charge? I don't have an external power supply, so I can't test this for sure though.
Anyhow, thanks nzdcoy for giving me some directions to what it could be.
Edit: Tried hooking up the phone to the computer, and I had access to the SD card. I suppose that's not a USB brick then?
at least it isn't a USB brick.
Does it positively charge when plugged into the PC? Unless you are using GPS or you are using a USB1.1 port, your PC should still charge it positively.
Yes, thankfully.
I've somehow found a method to charge the darned phone. And I could almost conclude it's a bad connection between the wire and the phone. I think the socket on the phone is damaged. Worst part is, is that it comes and goes. One day it could work swimmingly and charge in whatever position, the other day it requires one certain position to charge anything at all.
My Desire works in strange ways.
Thanks for the help so far, nzdcoy!
I've been messing around with roms for a while now, and I've finally chosen one that I really like, but the other day I decided to start playing with kernels, and I flashed netarchy-toastmod-4.3.2-cfs-sbc-havs-more-universal-signed. Once I flashed it, my phone would no longer charge at all. When I plug it in, the orange charging indicator would come on for just a second, and then turn off as if I unplugged it.
I had this happen once before, when I installed the fullHDMI app, I read that if I installed a custom kernel I would get better performance, and the same thing happened.
Luckily I am OCD about most things I do, and I ALWAYS Nandroid, so I was easily able to revert back to my former rom and kernel with no problems.
And the last time, my phone would charge fine if it was off, so worst case scenario, until I did a restore, I could get by just turning my phone off and charging til it was ready. But this time, my phone wouldn't do either! When its on, again, light comes on for a second, then turns off. And when its off, I don't even get that much!
I have never had an official htc charger (bought my phone on Craigslist and the guy "forgot it"), but I used to use my old Samsung Reclaim charger with no problems. Therefore, I can't remember whether or not the charger I'm currently using (stupid Rocketfish micro usb charger from best buy) ever charged my phone when its off.
Which brings me to my question, really. How do kernels affect charging on the Evo? I've read elsewhere about people having issues after flashing a new kernel. And really, does it matter if you're using an aftermarket charger or the OEM htc charger?
I would love to be able to play with new kernels and see what's best for my battery life, but every time (btw, if its relevant, the 2 times I've tried flashing a kernel without a full Rom I've had charging issues) I've tried I run into trouble, and I am terrified that I'll flash and forget, and won't have enough battery life to restore to my old kernel!
Edit: Also, whenever I forget my charger at home, I can usually find one laying around at work, and the one I usually use, some AT&T micro usb charger, has never worked unless my phones off, even with the built in kernels. It works perfect, on or off, with my buddys stock, non-rooted Evo. I haven't tried it lately, so I'm not sure if it'll even charge while off. I just feel like my charging issues are kernel related, and I wouldn't think the kernel would affect anything while the phone is turned off? Do different kernels work only with certain chargers? And do some chargers only work when enabled by certain kernels? I find it hard to believe that there's anything physically wrong with my phone when I can always restore and get it working again, but at the same time, its weird to me that some work while my phones off, and others do not.
Update: Just tried the Rocketfish charger while off. Phone does not respond to it whatsoever.. I need my Reclaim charger back! But again, this raises the question, do some chargers only work when enabled by certain kernels? Why would this charger not work when the phone is off, when no software is running, but work fine when its on and certain kernels are running??
Nothing??
Does anybody know anything about this?
that's weird man. if your phone isn't charging even when the phone is off, then it's not kernel related, it would be hardware related (possibly your charger port on the bottom of the phone) i read somewhere that the charger port has been reported to break off easily. have you connected it to a computer to see if the computer recognizes it?
edit: i noticed you were using an SBC kernel. I'm not gonna get into the whole debate about if sbc fries batteries and stuff, but have you tried swapping out your battery for another one? maybe the battery is fried?

I think its your charger too. I've had other phone (hybrids..yuck) that were very charger sensitive so it would not surprise me at all. THIS is the same charger that came with the phones so it will work or if your an ebayer like myself than go THIS route since its cheaper. And I've used SBS kernels since they first arrived on the seen and still to this day have had no problem, but everyone is different.
I also have had a phone with a broken usb port. It wont let you charge unless the port is wiggled just right and as soon as the phone is moved itd stop charging. Your issue definitely sounds like a charger problem to me.
Also, next time try to sum everything up in a paragraph or so. Many people will turn down a question when they have to read an essays worth of info.
Yeah sorry, I know I wrote a novel. I was kinda drunk and wanted to get the facts out there. I know my problem is not hardware related though. Charges perfect, no wiggling required, while my phone is on. Won't charge whatsoever, no matter how much I wiggle, with the phone off. It's just weird to me..
And the second the kernel loads after the boot animation (screen dims and 4 softkeys light up) my phone starts charging. Can a kernel make a charger that's not compatible compatible?
I believe the kernels are based off of HTC Stock Kernels, they are just tweaked to achieve greater performance. I've never seen any evidence of Dev's adding/removing charger compatibility so Id say its safe to say no.

I've never experienced anything like that before. Very strange. I wouldn't think that a kernel would prevent the phone from charging while the phone is powered off. I also wouldn't think that a kernel could make an 'incompatible' charger 'compatible'. If the charger is Micro USB, it *should* be compatible. I always use the charger that came with my phone, but I have used other ones in a few different instances, and have never had a charging issue whatsoever. Some chargers have different ratings, such as 1Amp charge output, or .5A charge output. Generally USB and car chargers charge at .5A, while wall chargers charge at 1A. The Evo should charge with either one, as long as the cable is Micro USB. I just don't see how a charger could even be 'incompatible', unless the charger itself was no good. My guesses are, either a bad battery, or a bad connection where the battery makes contact. Or, a hardware issue. There is a known problem for some Evo's, where the solder joints that connect the USB charge port to the motherboard fail. Poor solder joints. That could be your problem. I just don't buy that it's software related, because the phone should charge when it's powered down, regardless of the software. However, it is strange that this happened right after changing kernels, and nandroid restoring to your previous setup alleviated the problem...that is strange. I guess the easiest and least invasive thing to try would be flashing a few different kernels, and see how different kernels affect the problem. If the problem persists no matter what kernel / rom combo you're on, then it's not software related. If the problem goes away when you change kernels, then maybe somehow it is software/kernel related. It's just very odd.
I've seen this problem mentioned before, but no good fixes.
My phone won't charge while on, but will when off. Charging has always been a little buggy, but now seems stuck this way.
The problem seems to keep my phone from connecting to the computer - neither the mac android download program will recognize the phone, nor will it charge off the computer, nor will the wugfresh tool see it when plugged into my PC.
I rooted/unlocked using the wugfresh tool (kept the stock ROM) and figure I need to warranty replace the phone - but because the computer won't recognize it, I don't know how to un-root/re-lock it.
Question - 1. anybody know how to fix my usb charging/recognition problem? 2. assuming not, is there a way to un-root/re-lock the phone without needing to plug the phone into a computer?
Thanks very much!
Does it charge with the phone on from AC? And when it's plugged up to your mac, does it have the thing in the notification bar saying its connected?
It's possible you have a bad cable, just to eliminate the easy fix first. It should charge fine with any mini USB charger.
If you can get it to charge from AC, I'd try a different computer if possible or if not maybe a re-install of the drivers.
Next, as maybe a last ditch effort, it's possible the ROM got corrupted, though I'm not sure how likely that would be. I'm sure you can get the stock ROM to flash in Clockworkmod but the only way to re-lock the bootloader that I know of requires a PC.
Maybe someone else can chime in weather or not Samsung actually cares if you're unlocked when it comes to a warranty for a hardware problem. Also, what carrier do you have? They may just give you a new phone themselves and again, maybe someone can tell you if they actually look at whether you've modded your phone.
Thanks for the reply.
Yes, when it's hooked up to an AC adapter and the phone is ON, I get no charging. When the phone is on and hooked up to a computer (both PC and mac), I get no charging. No upper right hand corner battery indicator change.
In fact, when the phone is off and hooked up to AC power, it seems to be hit-and-miss as to whether or not it actually charges.
Plugged into a computer, I get nothing - it doesn't register a device is attached at all.
I think that's a great question - if you return an un-locked phone, do they definitely get mad at you? I wonder if that's been asked in the forums before...maybe I'll make a different thread?
Also, from clockworkmod, how can I flash the original rom, as you suggested?
I've already factory re-set the phone and even flashed a different ROM just to see what would happen - and it didn't fix the charging issue.

I literally had this exact issue over the weekend where it would charge when powered off but then the USB would completely die when the phone was turned on. All after using my incar charger. It seems the port inside the phone got bent so that the board inside was almost touching the bottom of the phone. If held flat on your palm...
I fixed it by bending the board back up with a knife so its dead in the middle of the port. No problems charging now.
this exact problem has been an issue for me as well, contacted Samsung and told them i bought it second hand and they issued a rma and sent me a ups label t send it in. This is my first phone that broke before I even had a chance to root it. I was pissed at Htc so decided to try something new. Going back to my T-Bolt for a while now.
My phone charges sometimes, others it doesnt. Sometimes the "Nintendo blow" works, other times it requires force. Eventually I can always get it to charge, but it can take a half hour of playing with it. I have multiple cables, original Samsung batteries, and lots of experience inside phones, and have never had an issue that I couldnt FULLY determine was hardware or software. Samsung claims they have never seen this issue. lol. Obviously they dont visit the forums

great idea - i was using my car charger this weekend. i'll give it a shot.
update - i bent the little board up off the bottom, and now i can't fit the charger in it. uhoh.
This is becoming a bigger and bigger issue. Please star and/or comment on this issue: http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=23789
I sent my galaxy to Samsung 2 weeks ago, it is due to arrive back today. They paid postage each way and the invoice says they replaced a component (no detail) and updated software and prl. I was already on the current release so not sure what to expect. But it is good to know they are taking care of us.
Hey guys:
I'm an IT tech and I'm really confused on this one. Started happening a week or 2 ago. I'd be charging my phone and it'd randomly cut out. I run Carbon ROM and have the notification light set to be a solid yellow when charging so I know if it's charging or not. It would happen very infrequently, but would cut out. I'd unplug and replug and it would be fine for the most part. It's gotten progressively worse. I was running NEAK kernel so I tried to go back to stock Carbon trinity kernel, same problem. The other day my phone would also randomly go in and out of "car mode" too which was weird. Currently, I have it plugged into my computer so it's charging in USB mode (lower voltage) and as of right now it's holding charge. But prior to last rebooot it was going on,off,on,off with the charge. Today my phone has locked up a few times when plugged into a full AC charger even. Seems to be completely random right now. I'm just looking for any advice. Going to flash a different ROM and see if that does anything. If not, what part would I need to order? I saw a Youtube instructional video on how to replace USB port and I'd be willing to do that. I bought my phone off Craigslist and have had it for like 6 months. No proof of purchase, which you need for Samsung warranties right? The battery is not "swollen" in the middle. Oh, also this morning, when it was going in,out,in,out,in,out constantly (on full AC charger), i could actually HEAR the (official Samsung) charger resetting itself almost, in sync with when the charge would cut out, if that makes sense. I could actually hear the charger making a "click" everytime it would lose charge then it would try charging again, and would click off again, over and over. Lastly, today I also saw in settings->battery it saying "charging" even though the charge light on my phone was off AND i saw it drop a percentage so it wasn't actually charging. VERY random. Maybe clear battery stats? Doubt that'd do anything... I have CWRP on my phone...
Any thoughts at all on this or if you've seen this would be great. Likely new USB port needed. Where to buy? If new ROM does not fix, it must have to be replaced. That's all I can think of....
Currently, it is holding a charge. I re-installed NEAK kernel, and set the AC charging to 1000 instead of the default of 1700. This happens though. When it seems to be holding, it's fine until I unplug and try later and then all the randomness begins. No idea what to think of it. Don't even know if setting to 1000 had anything to do with it working, likely not....
Didn't see it mentioned. Have you tried a different cable or even a different charger? Would do that before changing a usb port on the phone. Doesn't sound like the port if you are able to charge via a PC USB.

hello guys,
i need help figuring what is wrong with my phone. it cannot be charged right now, even when plugged in with charger,
the charger and cable i used dont seems to be the problem as i tested with my other phone too.
i have tried changing charging port and battery, but it still didnt solve it. so here i am asking for your opinions.
last week, my phone stops charging when plugged in and the battery wont go up when charged, i tried using same charger and cable to charge my other phone but those didnt seem to be the problem. after that, my phone eventually ran out of battery and died.
then, i thought my charging port has problem, so i buy new one and change the charging port.
but that didnt not solve my problem, as my phone did not even boot when plugged in and when i tried to charge it after that.
then, i assume it was my battery that has problem. so i bought new battery, fortunately, the new battery came in with 50% of battery juice. but after i try to charged it, the problem still there, the phone still cannot be charged.
this time, i checked with the ampere app for my charging status and found that when plugged in, initially the phone is charging, but after few seconds, the charging stops and it will repeat the charge-stop charge cycle. this is also visible with my charging led light.
however, i dont remember if this charge-stop charge cycle was there initially last week, i only remember it just stops charging, so i didnt know whether this is another problem or the same one initially.
things that i have also tried
1. i also tried changing the charging port to the old one and it didnt do anything, same as im using the new charging port. the problem still there.
2. i also tried using usb file transfer to test whether the charging port are problematic overall or just the charging part is problem. my usb connection has no problem as i can steadily transfer file for few minutes without disconnecting. so i assume my new charging port has no problem then.
3. i also tried flashing stock rom as i thought maybe kernels and stuff from custom rom messing things up. but it also didnt solve it.
4. i also tried turning the phone off and charging it, the phone boots up to charging screen, but the battery keeps dropping instead.
i dont really mind if this phone cant be saved anymore, i already backup important stuff from it, i just wanted to try fixing it for fun now.
also, english is not my first language, sorry if there are parts that is hard to understand.
Maybe some partitions are corrupted(like persist or any other)... search on xda how to flash those partitions. And try flash full MIUI fastboot ROM. Khmm if this doesn't work than I'm out of ideas. You can buy charger for battery only, for playing around until you gonna find a fix. Better than buying new one.
Good luck.
