Hi,
i just got a Desire ,and im gonna root it put on a new rom...but i see in this thread : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=809328 ,that there are a whole lot of roms and was wondering what is the diff between them? I mean to go through all the faq of those roms would take all day,so plz help ? so basically im looking for a ROM suggestion (and an explanation for it)
There are few differences between each other in each section. Things like some have A2SD, some have DATA2SD and so on. Some are faster, some are smoother. To be honest, if you know what you want then just try each rom from that section. A rom is a personal preference. If you go for Non-Sense/Gingerbread, try Oxygen or CyanogenMod. Sense roms, I see a lot of people going for LeeDroid. Sense HD, I tried Cool-z. Try them out.
ohhh my godddddddddd.. another one eh.. and now not only you are asking for our opinion to base yours upon, but also telling us that you'd rather waste our time to save yours.. by the way, there is a forum search button, do lean to use it. Much apprechiated.
Feel free to troll away
Ive just got a HTC Desire GSM (from HTC Magic) and tried a number of Desire ROMS, incl Gingerbread, CM nightly, Oxygen, DHD ROMS. I was never a big HTC SENSE Fan, but I loaded this ROM http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=818392 and so far stuck with it. I generally change ROMS ever 2 - 3 days, but this one has stuck. Its not lighting quick, but fully featured and very polished.
disclaimer - Its my opinion only and as other will tell you, flashing ROM is a personal choice. - cheers P
Tnx jelly and pp think ill try a rom per catagery
Hey guys
I'm flashing my mom's Desire (she has no need for any extra features above the desire's stock ones) so I'm wondering if you have any recomendations on a very stable and fast ROM?
I would have installed the stock desire rom, but since I rooted and s-offed the device already it seems a waste to lose it.
Thanks alot for your help
Oh and Sense is a must, she just learned how to use it, if i give her an AOSP rom she will have to learn to use it again...
USE THE SEARCH!!! This question was asked soo often.

LeeDroid - great rom!
New Leedroid's hd port is best for me so far.

Can't you install stock s-offed and rooted?
Why would you root it at all when she doesn't need any extra functions? Also, you choose wrong timing to do so with official Gingerbread release in the upcoming weeks.
But, if I was doing so, I'd flash AuraxTSense 8.4.
sorry to barge in but i was wondering the same question! i know whats the OP need, he bought a new phone and giving the Desire to his mom. am i right?
even if you are not, i just bought SGS2 today and giving my Desire to my mum. need recommendation too. the most stock look and can be stable and no performance decrease in a long run. cuz i am gonna be away from her when college opens, so i dont want the phone to have trouble.
S-offed, rooted, Cm7 r2 hboot. but i'll go back to stock hboot maybe.
Try SGBS ROM!!

Teppic74's ROM's are all stock and I started out on them. They're great and have some great power saving features hard coded in.
Would be great for your mum.

2.10.405.2 INIT.D ROM v2.0
This version is mostly identical to the first except it has a minor mod to enable init.d scripts. No scripts are included, so this won't affect anything in itself. However, it gives much greater flexibility for mods, and is required if you want to make some of the changes below. This version of the ROM doesn't include the radio, so you must flash an up to date version yourself if you don't have one already. You do not have to install the first ROM before this. Updates: latest Superuser app and new boot image (closer to stock).

http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=422094&d=1287437934 <- Powersaving pack to flash at recovery AFTER ROM Flash
http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=404595&d=1284981062 <- A2SD+ highly recommended so that your mum doesn't run out of room after a week of using the phone because contacts, emails and other app data also eat internal storage. Hit me up if you don't know how to partition her SD card to have an EXT4 partition
Basically, if you just flash the first two download links in the quote, you'll have rooted ROM that is entirely stock. No extra features or anything that isn't in the HTC RUU. Then if you flash the powersaving mod, nothing changes featurewise but internally the phone will use less power and her battery will last longer. She won't need to do a thing. With A2SD+, all you need to do is go through installed apps every now and again and move them to the internal storage (as the phone is "tricked" into installing apps on the EXT4 partition instead of on the phone itself, which means more apps available to be installed but just as fast as normal).
Wait, it's S-OFF and rooted? Why not give RCMix S Evolutionary Sense v2.0 a go?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=988570
I've been using it personally since the end of May. No problems at all, just lacking updates (but the developer is busy withj real life, so that's that)
It's using the new Sensation and 2.3.3 Android version and, it's sense, and, it looks sexy.
EDIT:
Also, excuse my tutorial-like post above. If you can S-OFF and root the phone chances are you know half of that!

I wouldn't put my money on it if I was you. Hint: check the newest Leedroid thread and see massive number of people trying to squeeze /system of 145mb on oxygen hboot. All rooted and have s-off. No offense on the op.

It was my phone for less than a week over the easter, rooted, s-offed installed rcmix v8 then I got myself my new Desire HD and been using that (sig).
For the Desire I installed RCMix's rom since i didn't mind any bugs, restarts and force closes since i thought i would update it on regular basis with the new versions. But as soon as I got my new phone, I left the country (student in uk) and just came back this week for holidays, and my mom has been complaining with reliability so I'm returning her phone to the most stable build of 'stock-like' rom.
If you mean flashing a RUU and then rooting and s-offing that just seems a bit of a waste of time. Since it's already rooted and s-offed i would like to keep it that way.

Read above and the official GB for desire is unknown time away from now, HTC if i recall corectly have loads of problems with the lack of memory and they still havent given a release date. So as far as I know GB might come in months.

I might give it a try but im using sense 3.0 on my DHD and even with the newer CPU and more memory and more frequent updates it still has a few glitches. I searched through the thread and it seems that the ROM still requires some bug fixes (ppl talking about bugs with headset and other small bits and bobs)
Thanks everyone for your replies, I will check out the rom's and see which one will suit her best!
No probs.
I'm using a D2EXT modded version and I don't have any problems with the headset. The v2.0 is pretty ironed out, 2.1 is where people seem to be having issues. But for your mum I guess the Twppic74 ROM would be best, definitely!
@theguybefore Eh, but they're all pretty clear that you need the Cyanogen hboot? I guess you're right!

That's old info. Latest news is that it passed QC and should be released in the next three weeks.
Forget 3.0 etc port stuff etc., you know you need rooted stock. She doesn't care for Sense 3.0 but cares if bluetooth doesn't work with handsfree.
Pretty sure bluetooth works ok with this ROM. It's hit and miss and dependant on hardware. The RCMixS ROM as I said has bee really ironed out. There's also the InsertCoin ROM which he's more up to date with advancements!
Hope you find the Teppic74 ROM well! Served me well for many months.

Superb ROM - Once I'd managed to install it (only recently acquired a Desire from a Hero upgrade) it's been excellent.
I can't find fault: Bluetooth (inc car kit), camera, video, iPlayer, GPS, Speed etc etc all running nice and smooth.
The only thing is that the arcade boot screen might not be to your Mom's liking - although boot time is good.
Cheers,
Rob

I love sense and I will go back to it at some point, waiting on Droidzone to update his gingerburst RoM. But at the moment am using MIUI data2ext and its bloody great, love everything about it, at first it looks abit iphoney but you can download alot of themes and change the look.
So try MIUI
No Sense no HTC. If you want no sense buy SG2
And BTW LeeDroid rox
Cool AceS Mix v2,very fast
but no chinese touch input
Beso your hardcore mate, if i can get a sgs2 for £150 of ebay i would mate, but to be honest i hate samsung stuff so it'd be an opx2 for me mate
actually i have tried the 2 hd senses, they feel very laggy to me, is the normal senses a bit faster, i might give them a go, just to spice things up, but even tho i hate apple stuff, i love the miui rom, so classy, i might find a sense rom for backup for when i have an urge for it
The only thing why I would consider miui is auto brightness which works fcuking awesome with it. Otherwise, I'm sticking to my Sense integration wrapped in my LauncherPro theme
im downloading leedroid 3.0.8.2, not the hd one, i'll give it a try, what would you say is the best sense rom? non hd? iv come from having a wildfire, blade and pulse, one thing i will say is that the dev community for the desire is amazing, so many devs, roms, kernels, the works, we are very lucky to be spoilt and have so much to choose from.

Moving to Q&A
the first rom i installed was gingervillain 2.0
ive tried several roms, coming and going between them, they all had advantages/disadvantages. but i always keep ending up installing gingervillain. its does everything i need, its quick, it's sense-less (personally dont like it) and as yet, i dont think ive encountered a bug with it.
now running gingervillain 2.7
Redux 1.2, awesomely fast! original android 2.3 without sense or any other big additions. Clean and stable! no bugs so far!

could someone recommend a decent user friendly rom for a noob
First ROMs I used were the LeeDroid Froyo versions. Very straight forward and easy to use.
Most here would recommend the CyanogenMod ROMs, or Oxygen. MIUI is popular, but I read just as many bad things as good with that one. Of the GingerSense ROMs, you can't go past RCMix, InsertCoin or LeeDroid. There are also CrystalPyramid and CoolSensation, but I would consider those a little more advanced than the others listed.
In all honesty, most ROMs are pretty easy to use. Some require a little more setting up of partitions or the like, but there's not alot to be scared of.
Good luck!!
this there any roms that i can just flash and go?
is there a certain CyanogenMod ROM you could recommend?
i dont know how to do partitions on my sd. just want the easiest thing yo flash, i wouldn't mind a rom with ginerbeard..

what does this mean?"You must have an ext 2/3/4 partition on ur SD-Card (512MB - 1GB recommended)"
SGBS is for GSM Desire only ... sorry
That means that you MUSt have an second partition on your SD-Card, because some system files are there and A2SD+ needs the scond one.

Hi there
I am new to this forum but have been told this is the forum to go to for continuing development on the htc desire.
I bought an unlocked htc desire from ebay but as there are no updates was wondering what would be my best options for improving performance and enhancement of the phone.
I would like to know wether i should root the phone.
Upgrade to 2.3
or just leave it.
I would like to extend battery life and update the rom to like jellybean or other.
please advise me
My advice would be start off with a good gingerbread Rom (android 2.x), as its a mature format you can be pretty sure the phone will be stable, and all features will work. I like both the RSK team's Rom and mildwild's cm7 one, but there are many I've not tried.

You should definitely root, and s-off it to get the best out of it. For this, check the "All Things Root" guide in my sig.
As frosty said, you should start with a stable GB rom, whether it's Sense or not.
If you only want to upgrade the Desire to the official 2.3 rom, then check the RUU in my sig.
root, upgrade or leave
thankks for that.
are there only a certain amount of customs roms available for Desire , ie, CM7(GB) or can you install newer versions.
This rooting sounds good but before i doi am going to need to know more, especially the continual development for this device.
is there still good support from XDA for this device.
I am after good support and devlopment.
Why not look at the development thread and make up your own mind if the community is active or not?

root, upgrade or leave
looks busy.
just hope i dont do the wrong thing.
so is it possible to install other roms apart from cm7 what about the latest roms??
Read the first couple of posts, and the last few pages of the thread to get a feel for stability and issues. I see a simple, basic decision process, decide if you want something new and shiny, which might have a few problems, or something old and maybe a bit boring, but reliable.(gingerbread vs ics/jb)
Once that decision has been made just choose your Rom, make sure you have the right hboot for the one you want to try, so long as you have your nandroid backup to fall back on you're unlikely to break anything.

I have been reading the posts and threads about rooting and it sounds quite complicated.
Reading a mag about android and rooting you can also do it without connecting to your pc.
As I am not technologically minded on phones , the mag seemed to make it sound easier.
I think the software for the phone or website is called z4??
any ideas on this.
many thanks
A quick search suggests it's not a lot of use for us. Rooting and s-off are relatively complicated, but worth the rewards, and you can't expect a whole new phone experience without a little effort...

I'm in similar situation. I rooted my 2.2 Froyo yesterday. Installed Link2SD made appropriate partition and moved apps to it. So thats not the problem anymore.
Now I'm wondering if I should instal custom ROM and which one?
My high priorities:
Stability
Advanced functions working properly (eg. tethering)
Speed (faster than stock froyo)
My low priorities:
As new as possible (JB?)
Sense
Easy to install
Which one should I get? Or should I stay on Froyo?

You can't have sense and jb at the same time. If you want sense, you will have to install gb. If you want JB, you will have stability problems after a while, if not in the first week.
So what you are asking is impossible to fulfill.
If you want a stable sense, try Coolsense v3, or Runnymede aio special edition.
If you want jb, then try VJ's JB.

thanks for that.
so my aim is the following:
1.- newer and stable rom
2.- better performance
3. good and continual support for that rom.

I know very little, but in my opinion, yes. Start with something tried and tested..and popular. Once you've gone through the process of rooting and flashing a new (to you) rom that's known to work, do the backups and have a look at the new stuff we'll never officially have, ics and jb. That backup will be there to give you a quick "Get me outta here" option.
