[Q] Erratic Power Button - Can't Safely Flash for Warranty - AT&T, Rogers, Bell, Telus Samsung Galaxy S III

Hey guys,
My power button has been acting erratically lately. I am pretty sure it's a hardware problem, because it persists in cwm recovery. Basically, the power button is 'held down' by some imaginary force and the phone sleeps/wakes/restarts by itself. This presents quite the problem, as I'm scared to flash the stock rom onto it in fear that the power button problem will stall the recovery and brick my phone. The problem has stalled several nandroid backups (took me a while to actually get my phone to finish one without it rebooting itself).
What should I do in this situation? I want to flash to stock using the Samsung GS3 Toolkit, and I'm not worried about my flash counter because it's already at zero (currently running AOKP rom). Also, flashing back to stock with ODIN won't trip the flash counter, will it?
Thanks to you all in advance.

Have you tried flashing back to stock via Odin? That requires download mode which I don't think anyway will be affected by your power button issue.
Flashing a stock ROM wont change the counter

If it's a hardware defect, and I'm understanding the problem correctly, the power button would "hold" I'm download mode during the flash, bricking the phone. I would open the inside and temporarily remove the power button so that the flash can be completed successfully, then I would RMA.

I have this exact same issue with my s3. My friend had the same issue too and he sent the phone in for repairs and they concluded it was a problem with the circuitry on the board communicating with the power button. Unfortunately I cannot send my phone in since I cracked the screen and warranty is void..
Anyways, you just got to hope it doesn't reboot when rooting and flashing a rom. That's what i did. After you flash it you should be fine. Install a 4.2 ROM and in the quick toggles menu add the "go to sleep" feature. This along with your hardware home button will now act as your off/on button.
If you want to switch back to Stock, just follow the same procedure. I have heard that whether the phone is running a custom rom or not, it doesnt matter, because samsung simply resets everything.

[Q] Power button stopped working after RTN

My power button is not responsive at all and my phone automatically boost when I insert the battery. It's as if the phone doesn't think there is power button at all. Also when i enter download mode by holding home+voldown and inserting battery volup does not continue, instead reboots.
The steps i've done to get to his point and to attempt to fix are as follows
note 2 toolkit allinone root with twrp
install team g*n miui rom
messed up roaming settings
attempted to fix using dialer codes
flash to stock using sph l900 ma7 stock restore exe file
##SCRTN# in dialer on stock. this fixed my issue, but i kept getting issues with it saying it was activating constantly
flashed to stock again
##RTN#, power button stopped working
allinone root again
triangle away
flash stock again
Am I doing something wrong? Did I completely bork my phone? I just want to put it completely back to stock which I thought was what I was doing? I hope its not hardware, but the battery part of it makes me think otherwise. Any help would be appreciated. I hope its just a tar file I need to flash or a dialer code. I don't wan to send it in.

Do you have stock recovery or custom? ??
Sent from my SPH-L900 using xda app-developers app
It should be stock, i'm running the stock restore again right now just to make sure everything is stock.
nope, did one more stock flash and still having same issue, its as if everything having to do with the buttons and power is messed up. It boost as soon as you insert battery, volume up will not continue in download mode, and the power button doesn't work at all. The only way i've been able to get into download mode is adb.

Brick? Faulty power button? (Phone wont stay in download mode)

Hello guys, so today I decided to update my i747 ATT S3 to the latest Task650 Rom, I did as always with the exception that this time I needed to flash a file trough PDA in odin since there was a baseband update back in may. Everything was successful at this point, phone rebooted and went in to the current version of the Task650 ROM i had installed, everything worked great with the exception of my power button that once pressed instead of locking the phone would completely turn it off/trigget the power panel (shutdown,reboot...) so I booted again and powered it off. Tried to get into recovery to flash the latest build of the Task650 ROM without luck, the phone just powers off once trying to boot into recovery, tried the same thing with download mode. At first it went in and stayed in download mode successfully but then I tried to go into recovery again and the same story, went back into download mode and this time it would shut down after 3 or so seconds, sometimes lasts more but no matter what I do it shuts down and the battery has to be pulled in order for it to go into either mode.
At this point to me it looks like a sticked power button but I could be wrong. Any suggestions in order to attend this issue?
[Update] So apparently it really is my power button, wiggled with it for a bit and managed to make the phone boot into the ROM successfully...
Any suggestions on how to permanently fix this issue?
Oscar
Hey man,
If you were able to "wiggle" the power button to work then its definitely the power button. If you have had the phone for a year or less I'd Odin back to stock/ flash counter fix the device and return it to at&t. Back in my captivate days that was a sure sign that the power button was about to malfunction completely. If you are unable to take in for warranty then I'd suggest using the XDA search feature to find the "home remedy power button fixes" or maybe just googling fixes. Mobile tech videos does good work but I won't link to his website because I'm pretty sure its against XDA rules. Or, for even more fun; you could fix it yourself.
Anyways,
Goodluck.

SGH-I747 Won't Boot After 4.3 Update

I've been looking on multiple other threads for the last few days now but haven't found a fix. I updated my S3 from 4.1.2 to 4.3 through the phone(AT&T recommended update) and it worked for 4 days but was very glitchy. Then it shut off one day with 50% battery and wouldn't turn back on. I tried pulling the battery and turning it on but it would generally fail after it reached the galaxy s3 logo. Can't stay in download mode or recovery mode without it crashing. I sometimes I found that if I leave the battery out for an over 4-5 hours, it can get it to boot and reach my home screen but it soon crashes. Any help would be greatly appreciated since I have been without a phone for about a week. Thank you.
Can you do a factory reset in recovery mode? Not sure if you phone will stay on long enough.

Unfortunately no, the phone doesn't stay on long enough. And I've tried with and without the phone plugged into a charger or my computer but neither really help.
Any warranty left on your phone? If not, you could try flashing a custom recovery in Odin if the phone will stay in download mode, then wipe data, cache from the custom recovery.

No I'm pretty sure the warranty is ended since I've had the phone for about a year and 3 months and don't have any insurance through AT&T. How would I go about flashing a custom recovery? Is there a link to a tutorial you could refer me to? Just in case I could get the phone to stay in download mode long enough. Thanks for all your help by the way. I really appreciate it.
Okay. Download the tar version of Philz Touch Recovery from here: http://goo.im/devs/philz_touch/CWM_Advanced_Edition/d2att
Install it using Odin by selecting pda and browsing to where you saved the CWM file. Flash it, go into recovery, and wipe.
Good luck. Let me know how it goes.

The flash worked and now my phone is staying in recovery. It got into recovery mode and did a factory reset. Now I started up and I started setting up my phone (wifi, google account..) but it crashed multiple times during that setup time. I haven't reached the home screen yet. Occasionally it will boot loop once or twice before reaching the setup again......
So I finally got to the home screen and it crashed (after about 7-8 crashes and reboots). Could it be 4.3 or maybe a hardware problem?
Could be either but let's assume it is an OS issue. Did you flash a custom rom?

No I didn't, I don't know of one that I should flash? Recommendations?
Also, my phone was just on for about 8 minutes and was working. I noticed that my power/lock button was extremely touchy and i would barely have to touch(not press it) to lock it. If I press it (like I use to to lock it, it pulls up the power off/options and if I don't do anything about it, it will shut off and restart(boot loop) until i pull the battery and turn it on myself. So I think it might be a problem with the power button being too touchy that it just turns off. Do you know if there is a way to disable the power button?
I run Cyanfox on my brother's S3 and it's pretty stable: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2480007
Yes, the power button could be causing the problem. Sounds like the power connection and/or board may be defective.

Alright I will try to see if I can get that to work. Now the phone is rarely making it to the home screen and if it does, it only stays for at most a minute. Generally it's back to it only getting to the initial Samsung logo.
Is this with the stock ROM?

Yeah it is. All stock. The only change that I made recently was the firmware update to 4.3.
Okay, definitely try Cyanfox to see what happens.

Okay, I'm reading instructions and it says the one of the prerequisites is to have the phone rooted. Is that really the case?
No need to be rooted. You can just flash it in recovery.

Alright well it worked right off the bat for about 15 minutes and then crashed. Now it is doing the same sort of thing it was before. It will rarely make it to the home screen but typically just crashes before it gets there. It will crash and then only sometimes turn on when I press the power button. Other times I have to pull the battery and occasionally it will boot loop once or twice.
I think the power button is now the issue.

Soft Brick or Hard Brick

So last night my phone died without any reason and start to loop on "SAMSUNG" and "SAMSUNG GALAXY SIII". so what i did is to remove the battery for a couple mins and press the power button hoping that it would be totally off, but it didnt work at all. i tried entering RECOVERY (TWRP) and DOWNLOAD MODE but for some reason it can stay there for too long it would go black in an instant.
i just upgraded my FIRMWARE to 4.3 using DocHoliday77 root66 4.3 (MJC) after i odin. i immediately FLASH S3Rx 3.0 TouchWiz 4.3 MJC (1-27- 14) and i chosen DKP for my kernel..
i've done ODIN couple of times already and am very successful with it because i always look at Doc's guide every time i do it.
now just to say to myself that my phone will work again, can anyone of you tell me if i can still get my phone working again using the "[HOWTO] UnBrick T-Mobile S III QHSUSB_DLOAD w/Video Walkthrough"
am still worried until this time because am not sure if its soft or hard brick
Edit: i remembered, i open my mobile data for 5 - 10mins after than i closed the screen there it started the Brick or Bootloop.
If you can get it to stay in Download mode, then do Odin. Otherwise follow the video.
Try flashing stock???

i already solve it.. it was a hardware issue, power switch was the main problem..i was worried as F**K when i was in that situation.
I have a similar situation. What did you do to the power switch to fix it.

Power Button can get Stuck for a while. You can either try to pry it loose or send it for repair.

Oh boy I need help

My wife's old S3 was given to me to use. I had originally flashed CM 11 on it and tried to upgrade to CM 12.1. In doing so I accidentally forgot to flash GAPPS.
I reverted to the stock ROM via Odin but now I'm stuck in a boot loop. The best part? The device's power button does not work and I cannot make any selections within the stock recovery to clear the cache and reset to factory settings.
Can anyone help me?
Pull the battery to turn off the phone and put it back in. If you feel the phone power up by vibrating upon putting the battery in and not touching the power button and go into loop then you have a bad power button. Do you have this problem? If so, then your only options are repair or remove the power button (there is an alternate way to power the phone up). Let us know if it is a bad power button or not so that hardware issues can be accounted for and go from there.
NOTE: The S3 has been known for some time now to have power buttons that fail. Mine did, and I opt to remove mine as I could not justify paying for a repair when the S3 is my backup phone and test platform and I have a method to power up. I use widgets for controlling power off, restarts, and recovery once powered up.
I no longer have a power button either and recently encountered this same issue after using Odin to flash a stock image.
My solution was to flash TWRP recovery using Odin, which allows one to perform operations using touch instead of the power button.

Bootloops have not been uncommon when reverting from LP to KK. Once you have flashed TWRP as others in the thread have suggested, you will probably need to wipe/ format the internal sdcard. The other remedy some have posted is to load a stock recovery and do a factory reset from within that stock recovery.
Not sure how to get into recovery without a power button.
Is the button loose or not functioning at all? You could try opening the phone and removing everything from the frame and see if the power button functions.
I haven't tried this with my SGS3, but on my Acer tablet I have booted into recovery using adb and fastboot. This requires connection to a computer, but not a power button. Unless you have a touch version of a custom recovery installed you still would not be able to select an item.
You may be able to flash a custom recovery using adb. I had broken my stock recovery on that tablet and used fastboot to reflash a working stock recovery.
