Review of Anker 5200 mAh extended battery w/lots of pics!!! - General Accessories

This is a review of Anker extended 5200 mAh battery for S4: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00CXFMZPS
With a lot of different phone battery releases, Anker established themselves with a strong and dependable reputation. I used their battery with my Note 2, so testing their extended with S4 was no brainer. Although Anker doesn't manufacturer their own batteries, each one features grade A cells and full CE and RoHS certification. I know these guys stand behind their product and make sure it passes all the required built-in over-load and over-voltage protection. And to back it up, they always include 18-month warranty and a top notch support. This particular battery is no exception.
It comes in capacity of 5200 mAh which is a double of OEM 2600 mAh from Samsung. The battery has a built in NFC, just like a standard one. Obviously, double capacity comes at a price of double thickness and double weight. I confirmed that by measuring original battery to be 44g (1.6oz) and 5mm (0.2in) in thickness, while extended one 90g (3.2oz) and 11mm (0.47in). No matter what you find on ebay claiming capacity of more than 5200 - I would never trust it because it's physically impossible to stuff more cells into that footprint.
The battery comes with a cover that doubles the thickness of the phone. The one I received had a very nice deep blue color, and a smooth finish. I did find the finish to be somewhat on a slippery side. The good news, you can easily find extended tpu honeycomb case for S4 on ebay for about $6. That will add more grip and give your phone extra protection. I just found that Anker also offers their own TPU case for S4 (http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00C3CSGL8), but do NOT get confused since this one is for a standard 2600 battery/cover which they offer as a replacement for OEM.
Performance of the battery was very impressive. I captured screen shot of it below. I run a stress test of keeping phone display at full brightness, no time out to shut it off, and playing HD movie in the loop for 10.5 hours!!! Along with web browsing, running some apps, and making phone calls, I had it running for over a day on 4G (no wifi) and still had 16% of battery left. That was not a light use, almost 11hr of hd movie at full brightness is not a joke. Overall, definitely a great battery to provide you with some extra juice!!!

Friend bought one of this, it functions as advertise. Recommended.

One of the reviews said the battery cover was very thin plastic and prone to cracks and chipping from removing the cover to replace batteries often. Do you see this behavior with your setup?

I didn't find it thin at all. As a matter of fact, it felt very solid and no flex once you assemble it - a very important factor for me. But listen, Anker gives you full 18-month warranty to cover any defects or any problems with their product, and from what I read here in the forum they really stand behind it. So I wouldn't worry too much about battery cover since it's covered under warranty anyway.

I was going for the Anker one myself but then since its out of stock I went with the hyperion 5200mAh which came this week, it basically looks like that short of logos being different. The extended battery is so nice too, I use my phone A LOT and i can go the whole day and still have like 30-40% at the end of the day. Its my weekend now so I don't use it as much during the weekend so I'm curious how long it will go with low to moderite use.

This battery is amazing, over 3 days standby 3 hours of screen on time, and a whopping 21 hours of awake time. I'm using the hyperion honeycomb case with mine, though I would like to have a more substantial case.

I'm using the Otterbox Defender with the Anker 5200 mah battery. I cut hard plastic shell of the Defender away in the battery area, so that it fits around the battery. The soft rubber outer shell of the Defender holds the battery in place easily. I didn't install the stock rear cover (or the Anker supplied rear cover--the Defender covers it all)
It minimally adds to the overall thickness of the Defender.
Full disclosure, someone else here posted doing this first; I simply copied their design.

Any chance that you can post some pictures of the modified Otterbox case with the Anker 5200 battery?

anyone know if the anker would be compatible with the above case by Seidio? Along with their own battery cover of course.

Has anyone tried the new Seidio Cases made to fit 2100 Extended Battery yet?

Someone earlier posted a seidio code for 15% off and while I was just browsing I noticed Seidio FINALLY released some cases made to fit with the Verizon 2100mah extended battery WITH the backing on. None of this ghetto battery cover off business!
I searched but haven't found any info. Has anyone gone ahead yet and bought one (Surface, Convert) yet? Is the fitment just as great as the standard one? I have a Verizon TPU case that fits the extended battery just great, but I've been waiting for a hard case that will fit for a while now.

I have not tried the new seidio case. However, I am currently using the Seidio Surface and I've managed to squeeze the original VZW ext. battery into it.
You can fit it in there by:
1. Put the ext. battery in the back
2. Put the ORIGINAL BACK on the Nexus (I know it won't completely close)
3. Snap the case on
Ta Da! It works!
BTW this is my first post.
I just got my Convert Value pack for the LTE 2100 mah battery today.
So far I like it a lot. The Surface case fits perfectly and adds little to the size.
The Convert case is a silicon skin with an exoskeleton that fits over the Surface case. I was interested in this for those times when you need extra protection for outdoor activities. This thing is very durable and I can't imagine how the phone wouldn't survive some serious punishment! It even had a silicon shield for the camera lens that folds down for taking pictures.
The value pack also comes with a screen protector, but I haven't decided if I'll use it yet.
I would recommend the Seiko cases.
Btw, I posted the JAN2012 15% off code.

Hey thanks for the review. Let us know after a week or two if the surface case on the inside scratches your phone. I want one but the one I had for my nexus s scratched my phone up badly. The design has rough edges inside where the two parts snap on the seam. Also this case for other models in the past has been a little too small causing the corners to rub and scuff up the phone as well.

I really don't see how that could happen with this case. It fits tight and I don't feel any edges along the internal seam that could scratch anything. There is also a velour covering all along the inside of the back piece.
It's rather hard to get apart once you snap it on the phone - which is a good thing!

I had this same problem with a Seidio case on my DX. The hinge was sharp and started to cut into.the phone. I took some ex-fine sand paper and smoothed the inside down, but the damage was done.

Good to hear about the improved build quality. Also worried as the extra bulk of the extended battery (gsm) might put stress on the corners and induce those scuffs. Thinking of getting one of these. I will definitely be inspecting the inside of these prior to install.
Czechm8, would you mind reporting back anyway about interior damage if you find anything? Most interested in the corners and the areas near where the volume and power button cutouts are. Those are where my nexus s got scratched.

will nfc function still work or does the case prevent it?
Case won't affect NFC.

The case has a soft silicon layer...does this attract dust like the otterbox does? That could be a killer for me.

I use the Seidio Active w/Kickstand (original release) with my VZW version with the extended back and I haven't had a problem.
I do know that the regular Surface case won't work with the extended battery cover.

Defender mod w/ Extended Battery

Just in can anyone was wondering... I dremeled out my back cover and defender shell to fit an extended battery and it worked wonderfully. Now the size isn't for the faint of heart but if you want protection plus long battery life this is the way to go. I'll post pics if anyone wants but since I haven't seen anyone else post about it I figured I'd go ahead.

Eh...
I have an Otterbox Defender and I heard about the Hyperion 4200+NFC and thought of the same idea but I didn't get the battery yet because I was thinking that the backside silicon would petrude.
If you look carefully at the backside pic after everything is said and done, it bulges about 2mm too much. I'm sure there is a gap now...something that I and most others (I would assume) would want to avoid.
I don't use NFC so maybe a slightly smaller battery, 3500 or so will be the 2mm less that it needs to be for this to be the ideal "hack" job.
(I wonder if the 4000 would work? Does anyone have specs on the thickness for the 4000 and 4200? BTW, a rotary cut tool would be best to cut, for those who are going to try this.)
Do you have any pics of how you made it?

His pics are posted already...
If you are asking me, I didn't do it yet because I had the thought that it would bulge the silicon on the back (as you can see in the pics)...but I'm trying to see if the 4000 is thinner by about 2mm, then it would be good. Hyperion would be the wiser choice as they are the better known brand...those other XYZ companies just make junky batteries IMO.
Anyone on the 4000 and 4200 thickness? (I've asked the only eBay seller that sells both, hopefully get a response soon)
Do you think it would be a bad idea to put electrical tape around the battery and back case to further prevent dust from getting into the electronics? I work in a warehouse and dust partials can sneak through cases.

Yes the bulge and the gap kind of bothered me at first too but I don't work in an environment that has a lot of grit. (As you can see I actually work at a Verizon store). As far as how I made it I just took a dremel but unfortunately didn't have the right tool at the end but I made due. Overall I'm still satisfied with it. The extra bulk really isn't whole lot for me plus I love having the rugged case. This has really made me love an already good phone.

OIC...yeah, the phone is so thin the Defender really isn't all that bulky as one would think. It's really the front bezel (to protect the screen) that kinda makes it look so much thicker. With the Defender, I can only think of a precise hit to the flat of the screen that would damage it...basically the tank of all cases!
Like I said, a couple of MM less and it would be perfect...someone had a double OEM battery hack job, just wished I knew the thickness specs on all these batteries...

Review: Seidio 3500mAh Super Extended Life Battery and Surface Extended Combo

Thanks for checking out my review. I have a lot more bigger pictures of this set up on my blog.
http://chrismchoi.blogspot.com/
Please check it out. Just getting it started. Please hit thanks if you find this informative or helpful and I will keep trying to review products for you guys.
We've all fallen in love with our Galaxy S III. What would have made our phones better? Extended battery life. Thanks to Seidio, they've provided us with the solution. I was relieved to find that the rubberized back was an added bonus. There has been much interest in this finish due to the sleek design of the factory back.
If I ran the numbers right it, the battery has a 40% larger capacity while still maintaining the sleek design.
The total weight of the extended battery and case came out to 6.53 oz. Factory weight was 4.76 oz.

The SURFACE Extended case is the standard SURFACE case in the Seidio line up. Straight and to the point. It's the minimalist case. It covers up the corners. It's nice and thin.
Battery installed.
The hump in the back made the phone much easier to grip. The hump fell right into the palm of my hand. It didn't slide around like it did without it.
Fitment was dead on. I've been trying different back covers and the Seidio cover fits the best out of all the aftermarket covers I have tested. It's even all around without leaving any open gaps.
The SURFACE Extended case stays snug. You don't have to worry about the phone slipping out.
I was glad to see that Seidio took the time and made the case fit. You can see how accurate the openings are for the camera, speaker and flash.
The standard Seidio clip. Same as always. The top mechanism is still the same design we know and love. You never have to worry about it wearing down and cracking. It has the same spring design.
Conclusion
I'm in the wireless industry, so the the extra life is put to good use. The numbers do not lie. This is moderate use throughout the day. Maps was triggered by Google Now. I'm sure it would have last much longer without it. This would equate to almost 72 hours without a charge. I apologize I stopped at 49%. I will redo the test once I am settled back in. It's highly impressive from how it performed and I am content in this product.
MSRP: $69.95 for the Seidio Super Extended Battery available at the Seidio Online Store.
$49.95 for the SURFACE Extended Combo also available at the Seidio Online Store.
I definitely recommend this extended battery. Seidio has always been there for me when it comes in terms of quality and reliability. NFC compatible battery is available for around $5 more. I've had their extended batteries on my Blackberry's and my Evo. So I'm sure this won't be the last! Tomorrow I am participating in a 12+ hour event, I am confident I won't have to worry about a charge during that time. I'm looking forward to showing off my new battery.
Not something I would get but I'm sure it's great to have that much juice Thank you for the review.

It was moderate usage throughout the day. At the amount of time it was on... the %'s show. It's not like I'm gonna sit on Facebook 20 out of 50 hours. Sure I can do a stress test, but those numbers mean nothing when you don't know how it equates to real usage.
I'll see what I can do.
Interesting
I bought a 3300 mAh battery myself.
With stock battery, i got 6-7 hours of screen time with wifi on and pretty low brightness.
With my new battery i got over 16 hours of screen time with wifi on and brightness at maximum.
This is the GT I9300 with stock everything.
Nice review. Any specific reason you went with the Seidio over the Mugen?

I haven't bought one I just emailed them if I can buy a cover. I like the lower profile it has over the other covers I have seen

It will not fit a honeycomb case correctly at all. the "bump" is lesser in width and length.. it will look like butt. (FYI)
---------- Post added at 06:18 PM ---------- Previous post was at 06:17 PM ----------
can we get a length and width dimension of the "bump"?
and is the "nonbump" the same size as stock?
I ask, because THIS may work with a DRACO!
(and if you decide to sell it, contact me, You are a great seller.)
Extended Surface Case.
Seidio also has other new cases out. I think they have an Active as well.

Review of Seidio Innocell (4500 mAh) and ACTIVE Case for Extended battery w/pics!!!

Here is review for Seidio Innocell 4500 mAh extended life battery (http://www.seidioonline.com/samsung-galaxy-note-2-4500-extended-life-battery-p/bacy45ssgt2-gy.htm) and Seidio ACTIVE Case for Extended battery (http://www.seidioonline.com/samsung-galaxy-note-2-active-extended-kickstand-p/csk3ssgt2kx-bk.htm).
Note 2 users are very fortunate to have an amazing high capacity 3100 mAh stock battery. But its both a blessing and a curse Yes, it will last a long time, but with a phone like this you can't put it down and want to use it non-stop. That's when you realize that you running out of juice with your original stock battery and need something with a higher capacity. With a higher capacity comes a bigger size. It's natural, higher capacity, more cells, bigger size. And you know what comes next - how the heck am I going to protect my phone with a bigger battery? Most of the companies offer an extended battery cover, but that will not offer any protection. Some might offer a slim case, but is that enough?
That is why I decided to look into Seidio solution of Extended battery AND a rugged case to enclose Note 2 with Extended battery. Even so Seidio doesn't offer capacity of those other brands claiming 6200 mAh or on par with their budget price, this company is known for delivering high quality products you can trust! Battery itself comes with a replacement battery cover to accommodate it's bigger size, and you have a choice of either white or gray colors to match your Note 2. True, there is no NFC antenna offered with this battery cover, but you have to take a closer look at the pictures. You can see a profile for NFC antenna and a tab where contacts go. I did side-by-side picture with original battery cover so you can see the alignment. I believe if you get a spare NFC antenna you can place it on the phone side with contacts pushed down by that tab on the extended battery cover. I will try it out soon once I get my hands on a spare NFC antenna.
From the picture you can see that Innocell is twice as thick as a stock battery. Extended battery cover fits perfectly, no flex once assembled, although I also believe it's not sitting right on top of battery. Very important that around s-pen opening there is an indent which makes removal of stylus very easy. To take it to the next level, Seidio offers a custom ACTIVE Extended case to fit Extended battery cover. The case has the same quality as a regular ACTIVE case with it's dual-layer protection of inner shock absorption silicone sleeve and outer exosceleton cover with a smooth rubberized coating and corner/side protection, and also a signature kickstand! NO interference with a magnet The fitment of the case is superb with every port aligned perfectly. Power and volume buttons are covered and very responsive, with a nice tactile feedback. Front of the phone has a decent lip to protect the screen of the surface, although as expected from silicone sleeve in places where exosceleton not holding it down - it pulls away. Also, typical for silicone - it will be a lint magnet. But overall it offers a great drop protection, corner protection, and a very nice comfortable grip when you hold this over-sized case. I can tell you from a first hand experience, today I dropped it down from about 4.5 ft on a concrete tile floor - not even a scratch!!! So you know the protection works!!!
Now about battery capacity. I don't have any fancy test equipment to measure it up. But I do use Battery Monitor Widget Pro which has an option for mAh calculation. Do I trust accuracy of that calculation, maybe not so much. But I trust the relative comparison between my stock battery and this new battery. So, after a few charge cycles my stock battery was showing 3200 mAh rating while this new Innocell battery was showing 5050-5390 mAh. To me this is a relative improvement of about 65%. After a few more charge cycles it might even improve. Another thing to note, I posted a screen capture of my battery after 5.5 hr of use (not very heavy, mostly just periodic checking of email and some brief web browsing) and battery went down only 3%. Not bad at all
Overall this is a very high quality product!!! I know some might argue that Innocell battery is a little overpriced, but its a quality you pay for. Plus, to me it looks like Active Extended case might fit over any other extended battery cover.
Here are the pictures for your enjoyment!!!

I sure hope it could fit any extended battery, but I don't have anything beside Innocell to test it out.
Here are the dimensions of original OEM Samsung stock battery (I can only measure it precisely in inches):
2.96" x 2.18" x 0.23"
And Innocell, with ACTIVE Extended designed for it:
2.95" x 2.19" x 0.43"
Can you post dimensions of Mugen and also if anybody can do the same of other extended batteries, like Anker or Hyperion? The most important is thickness. Also, keep in mind that Innocell comes with it's own battery cover replacement which is a continuous curved back. I have seen a lot of other extended batteries with a battery cover replacement that have a hatch around battery area while toward the camera it steps down. ACTIVE Extended inner silicon sleeve and external exosceleton shell (with kickstand) designed for their shape, although it flexible somewhat and can probably accommodate other extended battery covers. Keep in mind, Innocell battery cover is not sold separately from a battery, while you can buy ACTIVE Extended separate. But I also wonder if you can call Seidio and ask them how to order battery cover by itself?
If you can fit ACTIVE Extended with your extended battery, that would be fantastic combination because this case offer a solid protection and a great grip, plus you get a kickstand which comes handy not only to prop the phone in landscape, but also to use it like a flygrip handle between your fingers.

Btw, took another battery stat this morning after a day of being off charger, with GPS and BT on all that time, and originally on 4G while switching later to WiFi only. Just email checking and light web browsing. Plus, I watched a movie for about 1hr. So it was on a battery for 1d and almost 2hr, and went down to only 69%.
And thickness with battery door for this battery( without Active case)?

0.64" without ACTIVE Extended.
One last update just to give you an idea of where I stand with this battery after 2+ days of use. It wasn't a heavy duty use, just my regular email and web checking. Two days ago I watched a movie for an hour, and last night watched Fight Club movie (and you know what's the first rule of that... lol!) for 2.5 hrs. So right now after 2d 13hr I'm down to 15%. Make your own judgment, but I'm very impressed with 2.5 days of performance with GPS and BT on, and WiFi at home while 4G outside, and including 3.5hr of watching movies - all while still at 15%
If only it comes with a good holster.

It's called Battery Monitor Widget Pro; someone else on the forum recommend it to me and it's the only one that can do mAh estimate by monitoring your charging rate. Free version doesn't have that option, while Pro does. Keep in mind its not that accurate, but rather more like an estimate. But for sure if you got replacement 3200 mAh battery and its reading 2500 mAh - you will know you have a lemon I use it more like a relative comparison tool knowing the reading with my stock Samsung battery and comparing it to reading of extended battery using the same 2A wall charger. This way you can get an approximate % difference of increased capacity.

Oh, I never got around ordering a new one, so I never tested a new NFC chip with Innocell battery door cover. Don't want to remove it out of my stock battery cover yet. Maybe will get around one day, but in theory it should work with Innocell cover.

Considering all the mods I have seen with Defender case are done for extended double-height battery - Innocell should work as well since it has dimensions of a typical double height battery.
Vectron - First off, Thank you again for all of your reviews. Second, sorry to bump this back up.
So I have a theory and before I buy the Convert Case for the innocell extended battery I want to ask you to test this for me....
Can you see if the Covert Case will fit over the Zerolemon battery without the Zerolemon tpu on it? And, if you can, provide some pics? Thank you in advance.
the only case you can mod to fit the ZL is the Otterbox and that was a pain in the butt.

Hey Fellas,
I am a part of Ankers Power User Program and will be reviewing /testing this product for them. I will provide dimensions, runtimes, heavy usage, real-world usage, ect.
Additionally, I will run a side by side comparison using same phone/ same tests. I just ordered my ZL 7000, now that it is in stock again.
****DISCLAIMER****
I was supplied a sample for test and evaluation, and promised that my review would be fair and honest.
Here are some stock pics.

WOOOW. As soon as I ordered my zerolemon and it already shipped out. This looks like it has a much more beautifully designed case and much thinner! I might as well order given the extra 200mah
Did this literally release today? I went through my whole weekend researching different extended batteries and debated myself which one I should get. Thickness is my biggest concern with the lemon
edit: it seems the dimensions are basically the same. But i may still go with this as it looks 10x better than the tpu case from zerolemon
wow... this is really thinner than my zerolemon case....and 7200mAh...
off to amazon.com! to get me one
The lack of nfc is a little disappointing, but it's so big! I'll probably pick one up since the zero lemon disappeared.
I believe this released for sale on Amazon Sunday night 12/15

This case looks amazing compared to my zerolemon one.. but I still love my zerolemon case.
Ordered it yesterday and get it today, let you guys know how it turns out. got it because zero lemon disappeared so hopefully this one turns out good!
Do you guys think the Laza Samsung Galaxy S3 RuggedFusion Protective Case for Extended Battery or any other quality protective case would fit with this battery? Or will the TPU case that it comes with be enough protection?
I got one as well as part of the poweruser group. I'm just received it today and will be posting some pix in a couple minutes

I am not sure any other case will fit. I looked at the zero lemon otterbox like case and the anker has some sort of a raised plaque on the outside that I don't think would be compatible. I put some pictures in my thread if you are interested.

If you are on Verizon go ask for an nfc sim for isis. I got one in January, and so far $25 free from whoever had their prepaid option before and I think they have a new promotion with Amex serve for 20%cash back plus nfc even with this battery.

I Just orderes waiting to come. i will write my experience
Hows the fit of the case over the phone and battery?
its really nice. i have pix in my thread if you are interested. seems like a durable and safe case for the phone
First Impressions......
The Anker 7200 is very well packaged, and the amount of thought that went into it really shows. The box is high quality and branded accordingly. The battery and case are enclosed in a plastic sleeve, then placed into a form fitted plastic tray with lid. Instruction manual, warranty card and power user info included.
Sent from my SCH-I535 using Tapatalk
The case......
The case fits battery and phone nicely. The fit is snug, but not ridiculously hard to attach like some tpu cases. It is also the smallest and thinnest of the cases I have used. Compared to the Trident and Otterbox, it is the smallest /thinnest. The TPU material is rigid, and would seem to offer good drop protection. In comparison to the Otterbox TPU, the Anker TPU feels more durable, and likely to be penetrated by sharp objects during a fall.
The buttons are responsive and easily identified. The finish of the case is nice, the back being glossy and smooth-matched by a matte border to facilitate grip. The case feels good in the hand and surprisingly not slippery-due to matte case border.
I personally like the look of the case, but the shiny back is prone to smudges and fingerprints. While it makes it easy to slide in and out of your pocket, Im sure that I will be constantly wiping it down ( I'm a bit neurotic like that ).
I currently run the otterbox modded with the Anker 4400. I use this primarily because I need a holster M-F. However, I can see myself using this Anker case on the weekends- sliding nicely into my back pocket.
Suggestion......
It would be nice to see a holster/case option for this battery similar to Zero Lemon.
Perhaps a matte option with knurled edges?
The battery......
The battery is very impressive to look at, not only the size of it, but Anker also added an a rather thick acrylic plaque for branding / or spacing purposes / protection? Whichever purpose it is supposed to serve, it does look nice.
The battery arrived at 50% and I put it on to charge 100% before use.
The battery and phone assembled is about the same size as the ZL7000.
ZL7000-
Length 13.9cm
Width 7.3cm
Thickness 1.6cm
Weight ??
Anker7200-
Length 13.9cm
Width 7.1cm
Thickness 1.7cm
Weight 9.8 oz with phone
The battery took 6hrs to charge on my ext charger. I have both the ZeroLemon ext. Charger and the Anker ext. Charger.
While they both appear to look the same, and have the same outputs:
USB Output: 5.0v 1000mA
Charger Dock Output: 4.2v 600mA
The Anker charger would not fully charge the battery-max88%. I completed the charge with the ZL ext. Charger.
I discharged and recharged for 1 cycle. It took 11hrs 50 mins to recharge on the ext. Charger. It will obviously charge faster on USB -1000ma. Vs 600ma-and I will post the USB charge time once acquired.
The battery was drained using juice offender / and gps test.
Screen brightness set to 100%
Wi-fi, Blue Tooth and GPS all on.
This battery is amazing. The phone was on continuously for 17hrs 10 minutes, with a screen time 8hrs 23 minutes! I played games, browsed the web, played music, made calls, sent emails all the while!
I'm going to discharge one more time under normal real world usage.
Auto dim, Wi fi when at home, bt in car, and normal emails games and music.
I will perform one more rapid drain, using the same apps and usage for final comparison.
My understanding about batteries of this size is that they need to be cycled a couple times for cells to normalize.
Its easy to see that there is some kind of voltage fluctuation in this battery. At 85% the battery had a 2% variance and at 65% a 1 % variance.
I have to say, I am very pleased with the results thus far, and am curious as to how it will perform under normalized conditions.
Stay tuned!
FYI- As of this update, 1.2.2014 the battery is on sale for $31.99 Amazon.
