The first thing you need to do is to ODIN flash this CWM custom recovery to your phone.
Here is the download link for the CWM custom recovery 6.0.3.1 TAR file : "cwm-touch-6.0.3.1-d2tmo.tar"
Here is the download link to ODIN which is required to flash TAR files: http://d-h.st/Q14
Make a new folder on your desktop and extract the Odin zipfile into it, then copy the CWM custom
recovery TAR file into the same folder. (odin is a windows app which does NOT need installation.)
After that flash the .TAR file using Odin.
When that's done you can basically flash any of the CWM/TWRP flashable custom roms found here in these development
threads for the Tmobile Galaxy S3 phones by going into recovery mode on your phone and flashing any of the Tmobile cwm
zipfile custom roms.
My favorite custom rom is the "Wicked" rom which as far as I am concerned is the very best available right now.
Here is the link to the Wicked rom: http://sourceforge.net/projects/evil1art/files/evil/t-999/Wicked/Wicked_v10.zip/download
If you want more information about the wicked rom and how to flash it, here is the link:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1804260
The link above will give you instructions for flashing the custom cwm flashable rom.
Once you have successfully followed all the steps in my post here you will end up with a rooted Tmobile
Samsung Galaxy S3 Touchwiz Jellybean v4.1.1 phone with the best custom rom currently available for it.

There are a lot of ROMs available in the forum, which is good because people have different usage scenarios and preferences.
Personally I'm not a fan of touchwiz. I've been on AOSP based ROMs since I got my S3 last September.
I highly recommend CM10.1 and AOKP.
Whether you go touchwiz or AOSP, you might want to experiment with custom kernels too to squeeze out performance and battery life out of your device.
Lastly, don't forget to nandroid and use Titanium backups.
Happy flashing!

Hey junky,
Just curious, why are you linking to a 6.0.3.2 version of cwm? 6.0.3.1 is the latest cwm has released for the S3. (It looks like the S4 uses the newer one.)
Has it been tested and proven 100% compatible? If ive missed something, please fill me in.
Not trying to give you a hard time man! But imo, its probably best to stick with the one built specifically for our device. (Or at least make the option known).

The reason I am linking the Odin flash cwm recovery TAR file to that particular post is that after reading some articles and
doing some tests flashing the stock T999 Tmobile firmware with odin I found out that if the kernel in any of these custom
cwm flash roms has been modifiied by the developers then we can skip the rooting process entirely since all these custom
roms are already rooted.
At first I did not believe this was possible, but after testiing it, I found out it was true.
So this means that it should work with any of the touchwiz jellybean based custom roms which have modified or custom
kernels included and it should also work on all of the AOSP/AOKP/CM10/MIUI roms as well since they do not have
the stock samsung touchwiz kernels in any of those cwm flashable roms and all of them over-write the stock kernel.
However this procedure will not work on any custom roms which come with the STOCK Samsung Tmobile S3 kernels.
I have not tested this procedure on my Galaxy S4 yet, but I am almost certain that it would also work the same way.

Ok, I am sorry for hijacking this thread, but I am quite confused now.
It sounds like you are saying that if you have an insecure kernel, any version of any custom recovery will work? Regardless of what device it was built for???
Apologies if I am totally misunderstanding you here. But it just makes no sense.
Yes all custom roms are already rooted, but I dont see how that is relevant to the recovery you choose. (Besides, you almost always have to have the recovery installed before you can flash the rom.)
I just find it very hard to believe that we could use the S4 or Note2 CWM/TWRP provided we have that insecure kernel. Even if you can, there are still potential problems.
First, what happens if the recovery you try is larger than our recovery partition? Brick!
And what happens if you are running this recovery due to your custom kernel, and then flash a stock based rom with a secure kernel?
As to your first statement about skipping the rooting process because the custom roms are already rooted.... you first have to achieve root before you can flash these, so I dont see what you mean by skipping the process.
Maybe im too tired to follow what you're saying, but I still dont see how its a good idea to have someone flash a recovery thats not built for their device. Its much safer to stick to the ones that are specifically built for our device and that hundreds of people have already successfully used.

You are right, I just uploaded the correct version of the cwm recovery tar to a file hosting site it's the same recovery which I used
to flashed my t999 S3 phone to find out if the rooting method I wrote about for gaining root access worked on my T999 S3.
I just edited my post to reflect the change I made to the cwm tar recovery download link to display that it's version 6.0.3.1
You are also right about something else too, if someone flashes a stock restricted kernel or any rom
which contains a stock/restricted kernel whether it's odin flashed or cwm flashed they will loose root.
But wouldn't that also hold true if we rooted using any rooting method then flashed the stock unrooted Odin
flash TAR rom or any stock/custom CWM flashable rom which had any kind of restricted kernel in it as well?

Why would we need to achieve root before flashing a Odin flash CWM recovery TAR file?
It's not the cwm recovery that achieves root, it's the rooted custom roms which do that.
Here is some interesting reading about this topic that I read, the thread in this link was not created specifically for our
S3 and S4 phones, but after reading it carefully a couple of times I am certain that the principle is just about the same.

As far as I can tell, I believe it means you're rooted still. I had the same problem so I Odin'd stock UVALH2 and then installed the leak without issue.
Not trying to hijack this thread but have been wondering why do you guys try to install leaks throw stock recovery. It is super easy to root this phone. Why not root install custom recovery then jush flash leaks?
Sent from my SGH-T999
Because you have to be 100% stock to install the leaks. This is the source of the error btw op. Prob not root but a custom recovery. Must be stock everything, modem and kernel must match too.

Same here, I didn't come from a stock rom. Oh well.
So are you flashing the deodexed roms then?
Im talking about the actual ota you download from somewhere like sammobile.
It patches the existing system (UVDLI8 patches UVALI5) if anything is modded in UVALI5 the patch wont work, or if it does it can cause problems.
If you're flashing roms from development section then yes you can flash normally with custom recovery. But those roms are based on the otas, they're not the actual otas themselves.
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda app-developers app
I don't bother with TW custom roms. Not really my thing, but I understand why people might want them.
I flash the OTA updates from the link in my signature (sammobile) in order to pull modems. Although there hasn't been a point lately, because you are working at the speed of light. But I flashed UVALEM, UVALH2, I1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, you get the idea.
Are you using TWRP? That recovery might not work with the OTA updates, but I've proven myself, and through many other people, that you can indeed flash OTA leaks from sammobile with CWM Touch 6.0.1.2. I'm unsure about the workings of TWRP because I don't use it. I don't use it because I don't like the buggy keyboard.
Yeah i tried everyway possible. The only way that worked was going uvahl2 thru odin, and then thru stock recovery i applied the ota jb uvdli7 from external sd. It was the only way to get it to work. I think the reason why the error message was coming up was because even though i unrooted my phone, the phone status still said "modified". Once i reflashed hl2 and it didn't say modified it updated the leak.
I think its going to take a video to prove you don't need stock recovery for this operation.

Lol! Im just usually online when they drop! Theres only been a couple where I wasn't.
If cwm touch recovery does flash these otas as is then it just means they've disabled the check the ota does to verify the system meets the requirements. Or they just disable the recovery check/patch to protect their own recovery. I hope its the latter.
Not saying it cant be done but till now I hadn't heard of it. I use TWRP (just personal preference) but actually never bothered to try with it becsuse too many people early on got errors like the OP when anything wasn't matching stock.
I use Mobile Odin for the otas since it not only allows me to meet the stock requirements but it also injects root so you never have to worry about rerooting or anything.
At this point I just want to know how CWM does the otas. Does it completely disable the system check, or just the recovery part of that check.
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda app-developers app
The zip file still runs the verification process. I've always done it properly, so I don't know what a flashing failure looks like. I have a background in programming, and I'm an amateur for sure, but I suspect that when the update checks for stock recovery, it thinks CWM is the stock recovery. I'm not sure of the code behind this, but I equate it to user-agents in browsers. CWM is saying it is stock recovery, OTA update accepts that, or some such. Without seeing the code, I can't say for sure, but this is my guess.
You get the option to disable the recovery patch, and to keep root when you attempt to exit recovery after the OTA flash.
I never saw much use for Mobile Odin. I did buy it, because the dev is amazing, but I've never used it. It allows you to flash zip files? I've always just done it through CWM. I flash everything through CWM... even other recoveries.
However it does it, I guess it works. Only reason I wanted to know if it bypassed the entire check is because that could cause problems for the more inexperienced.
Yeah, I love Chainfires work. The ability to flash zips with Mobile Odin was just added a few weeks ago and has worked flawlessly for me.

Well, first, there is not an Odin flashable 4.3 file, but you said you tried to flash MDL? Not sure what this is exactly. The most likely issue is you are using an incompatible recovery. Probably one that is too old.
I think you are totally confused between odin flashable files and recovery flashable files....

Please upload a Stock Rooted CWM Flashable ATT LK3 package

For now I am stuck with all the AT&T and Samsung crap until a kind soul can upload what I need.

Why not make a backup of stock rooted, then debloat? It's the same as what you're asking someone else to do. Then you can go back through your backup if things get hairy.

I am still learning all this stuff to be honest, and I figured out how easy it is to mess around and manipulate a CWM flashable archive before flashing. So I am good at that at least.
Strange though. The day the Sprint and Tmobile JB for their GS3s went live, people on their forum on XDA posted the Odin full flash and the CWM flash file which had all the standard stuff like Deodexed, zip aligned...etc...
The Tmobile forum was really on top of it.
I just find it easier and less time consuming to have the CWM file and just delete what I want in there and do everything, and then flash my own custom version.

Have to use Odin to flash either TWRP or CWM. Make sure auto-reboot is unchecked. After successful flash, pull the battery. Replace battery and 3-finger boot (Camera+VolDwn+Pwr) into recovery and flash whatever rom you want. If you're just trying to root and keep everything the same, then you'll need to flash both SuperSU and a BML FC09 kernel to retain root. Otherwise the stock kernel will rewrite stock recovery upon reboot.
If you want to just be rooted, then flash the stock deodexed or odexed-rooted version of FC09.
This information is readily available if searched in these forums. The guides are a bit outdated.

I don't know why everyone says this. I rooted my stock BML FC09 by Odin-ing CWM 5.0.2.7 and then directly flashing SuperUser 3.2 RC3's flashable zip. After reboot everything including root is fine while I always have access to the CWM recovery. True story Try it.

We say flash the fixed stock kernel or a 3rd party kernel because the stock FC09 kernel has a line of code that checks the recovery partition for stock recovery. If there is a mismatch, then the stock recovery is flashed silently during the boot sequence.
Andy, are you sure you weren't on the fixed stock kernel when you experienced that? Or that you weren't on the recompiled FC09 on here?

Odin doesn't work unless you're in download mode.
What happens when you reboot? If it takes you to recovery, boot into download mode (power+vol down+home) and flash a stock image.

Also this happened after I flashed the pure stock then I flashed the recovery and the phone automatically went to what I have explained in prior post
When the phone is recovery it doesn't let me do anything factory/reset or anything and when i put in download mode it doesn't connect to ODIN
What rom were you previously using? And you do have a T999L right? You won't be able odin flash any stock firmware because there isn't any.
Try again to get into download mode. If you can boot recovery you should be able to get there too I'd imagine.
Hold volume down and home while powering up.
If you can do this, odin flash either cwm from aerowinders sig, or twrp from mine. Then reflash whichever rom you were running before trying the pure stock rom.

I went through thread on here and saw someone with same issue and follow Mr. Doc's instructions pertaining to the pure stock and recovery and this is where i landed. Im in download mode so yes i see my phone is not ruined lol I just need the file Mr. Doc is telling me about to reflash because im now connected to odin. I had to use another computer. I greatly appreciate all the time taken to help me get my phone back to working order. Since I am new I need to find the place where I can give a lot of Kudos to mr doc and his team now all i need is where to i go for mr doc file
In my signature, click Recoveries. Then in the twrp folder download version 2.5.0.0. Get the one that's a .tar.
Then once connected to odin, click the PDA button and select the tar file you just downloaded. Then click start.
Once done it should auto reboot. Now reboot into recovery and try doing a factory reset there.
If you still can't boot after that, flash the other, deodexed rom from my T999L thread.
I've got to go for a bit but will try to jump back on soon to see how you're doing.
Sorry bout the he/she thing!

Mr. Doc when I go into goo.im it tells me in order to flash roms i need an open recovery scrip compatible recovery then it says it can find one for me thats where im lost and getting confused about whether i have a recovery on the phone. but if im right that means i can't right?
Neither CWM or TWRP have added support yet, though it should be as simple as asking. Ill try to contract them in a bit.
You can manually install any of the latest recoveries for the T999 though. They have been confirmed working by several people.
Are you familiar with Odin? I suggest going to the Recoveries link in my sig and get TWRP version 2.5.0.0. The one you want has the .tar extension.
Then flash that in Odin.
If you aren't comfortable with Odin I can tell you another way using terminal emulator.
Your phone does currently have a recovery, but unless you've installed a custom one its still stock.
Also, you can flash any of the Roms posted for the T999. If the rom doesn't include a kernel, and it touchwiz based, you can flash one of the kernels in my T999L thread in development section. I'd try the MD5 kernel first so its matched with the Touchwiz rom you choose. (If you flash CM or AOSP based roms, do not use the kernels I just mentioned).
Hope that helps!

I used the Toolkit to flash mine: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1746682
Choose Device option 62 and then Flash custom recovery. It will automate the ODIN install if you are not familiar.

I am familiar with Odin i used that to get me up and running again using the sig you just mentioned. If I'm understanding you correctly you're saying I can flash a t999 rom to my t999L but use a different kernel? Also am I flashing the rom using Odin and if so do I use the same method to flash kernel? I think Im getting a clear understanding because I thought I could only root thorugh odin but install roms through cwm and twrp lol and basically I can use Odin to do it all right? I want to make sure I don't have to bother you all the time lol I should have kept my darn att s3!! thanks again Mr. Doc you truly rock!!!!

You can load a custom recovery in Odin and flash a custom ROM.

Annoying, but not that hard to fix. You have two or three choices. If you made a backup, you can restore that from recovery mode.
You could go to download mode and flash a stock ROM onto the phone, then root it again.
Or you can go with a custom ROM as the poster above suggested. You generally need a custom recovery for that, so you'd go to download mode and install a custom recovery first. Followed by the custom ROM. If the custom ROM is a tar file, you'd also flash that with Odin in download mode. If it is a flashable zip file then the custom ROM would be flashed after you boot to the custom recovery mode first.
If flashing a stock image, ensure that it is a version 4.3 AT&T image. Trying to flash an earlier version will do bad things to your phone.

As far as I know, there is no stock 4.3 AT&T image available because one was never released by AT&T. However, I think there may be some 4.3 based ROMs that can be flashed.
Mobile Odin can also be used to flash an image since mobile Odin does not flash a bootloader or modem.

It can be painful to be an AT&T customer at times. If a full factory 4.3 ROM wasn't released, the OP could still flash a properly formatted backup of someone's stock AT&T 4.3. But it would of course be easier to adopt a custom ROM as you suggested. One choice would be S3Rx 3.0.
.
Thanks for the help. However I tried to flash several 4.3 stock based roms and got nothing. I had an older s3 with a busted screen so I took the mother board out and put in this. I then flashed twrp and rooted. Im on the ota 4.3 and would really like a custom rom. Im currently on the hunt.

You didn't give us nearly enough details to really know what you tried, let alone why it might have failed. AT&T is much more restrictive than most carriers and is locking their bootloader, so you have to be careful not to flash someone else's bootloader or a pre 4.3 version.
But since you have a rooted phone again.. installing a custom ROM wouldn't be hard to do.. I gave you a link to decent custom ROM that would work for you. Or you can browse other custom ROMs if you prefer. There are detailed instructions in the thread to guide you. Basically confirm that you have one of the listed AT&T bootloaders and modems, download the custom ROM to your phone, boot to twrp, do a "factory wipe", then install the custom ROM (flashable zip file) from the twrp install menu.
.
Try Philz Touch recovery instead of TWRP. If it doesn't work with Philz, let us know the error messages you're getting.
Can you post a link where I can find custom roms for att i747. Sorry for the noob question I have looked and cannot find one. Thank you. Im on rooted ota 4.3 with twrp currently.

You can't find custom rooms cause you're blind or can't read. Backup out of the Q&A forum to the s3 page with all the forum listing then click on the forum that says AT&T galaxy s3 development. If you can't find one there you need to stop trying...

I have had better luck flashing ROMs with CWM than TWRP.
There are lots of ROMs here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s3-att/development
Couldmyou point me in the direction to switch over. I have read alot on that same issue

Download Philz Touch zip from here and flash in TWRP. Reboot into recovery and you should have CWM installed.

Sammobile.com has the stock images don"t they? Thats where i got my Fido factory image.

Any luck?
Yes I have cwm and titanium back pro, busy box pro, and a few other goodies. So I made me a backup and flashed 4.4.2. I'm playing with it now. It seems really solid and way better customizations. I'm about to head over and give the developers thanks. Thank you as well for your advice.
