T-mobile network type? - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989

If I'm on t-mobile, should I have my phone set to GSM/WCDMA, or both?

it depends what you prefer do you use data often or are you a just a texter small time web browsing few calls here and there i would leave it at gsm (2g) wcdma would be 3g/4g kicking and rocking all day long so it all depends what you prefer i have mine on wcdma but when im not using it i just put on 2g because it saves battery

Ah ok, so WCDMA is the 3g/4g service, but 2g is E? Would that open up using other network towers, suhc as ATT while roaming?

yes it will show those networks sometimes so if your phone is unlocked you would be able to use it on att....just would need to swap out the sim card if you do but if you are on tmobile it would not matter because they would only go the network that is clicked when you go into network settings

3G possible with Three Mobile PAYG?

I'm using their PAYG sim which gives a free 150mb allowance for 90 days, but am only ever able to connect via GPRS (my phone says I am roaming as well for some reason). Is anybody else using this sim and able to receive 3G?
yes indeed.
Three don;t have the 3G coverage of the other networks, and so they use Orange as a backup network when you are in an area that does not have any of their own transmitters. Seems you might be in such an area, which is why it says you are roaming cos you're actually on Orange!
Make sure you are not stuck in 2G only mode of course.....
dial *#*#4636#*#*
select phone information
slide down to the bottom, abnd make sure the first menu box is set to WCDMA preferred, and not GSM only.
Thanks for the information, thought this might be the case but wasn't sure. The phone was already set to WCDMA Preferred so I guess GPRS is the best I'm going to get from Three Mobile for the time being.
Thanks also for letting me know how to access the testing screens, lots of good info there!
no probs, here to help.....when i'm in a good mood and not at work of course

i was reading this battery saving guide and i wanna make sure i did this right

well i was reading this guide and came across tip #22.
well that guide was made for the evo which is a cdma phone but when i checked my preferred network settings it was on wcdma preferred. since my G2 is a gsm phone,i changed it to "gsm auto (prl)".
was this the correct choice or should i have it set to wcdma?
thanks for any help!

Depends on what you are trying to achieve. GSM Auto (Prl) will switch between 2G and 3G based off what the tower is telling it to be on and the strength of the signal. From my experience this is the best setting for use and don't worry. Personally, I usually put my phone on 2G only, and only switch to 3G when I am going to be using the data.
WCDMA Preffered and WCDMA Only is telling the phone to hold 3G as long as possible, and if there is any 3G coverage to switch to it, or in the case of Only it will never switch off 3G, even when there is no 3G coverage available.
If you are trying to save battery GSM auto or GSM Only are your best bets, if trying to preserve a weak 3G signal for data WCDMA only, and if you are somewhere that gets decent 3G but the phone loves to switch to 2G for some odd reason, WCDMA Preferred.

[Q] help!3G connectivity has gone from my phone

my phone can not connect to 3G networks in most of our city, while it used to work just fine in these same places. at first i thought there must be something wrong with the carrier's base stations. but today i tested my SIM card on another LU6200(Korean version of Nitro HD) and it works perfectly both on 3G and 2g networks on that phone. but when i put it back into my phone, it can only get 2G signal. if i set the Preferred Network Type to WCDMA ONLY, it got no signal with just a cross on the signal bar. i have to put it back into GSM ONLY mode to receive signal.if i go out, i can get partial 3G connectivity here and there, but not consistently. sometimes even if i have full 3G bar signals on the status bar, i can not make calls or connect to the internet.i've got this problem probably after i tried to forcibly go into the Phone Info menu.i got repetitive " the process com.android.phone has stopped unexpectedly" promps , and i just ignored it and tried again. now ,2 options are missing from the menu, LTE/WCDMA/GSM and LTE Global.in place of them, it's UNKNOWN. i already tried flashing KDZ package of no avail. Does this mean a hardware malfucntion or software glitch? Please help!Thank you in advance

Well you do HAVE GSM only selected. THATS 2G(EDGE)

In mobile networks switch network mode to wcdma only.
Edit: could be hspa only, depends on your model.
4g is not lte by the way. If youre on lte it says lte not 4g
Sent from my LT28at using xda premium
lte is 4g on most roms that I have seen. Although I never used the lt28at just the lt28i and lt28h where hsdpa+ is called h+ and lte is called 4g.
There should be a toggle that you can download that will be able to click 2g 3g or 4g. I know on miui there is a toggle for that.
If you're using a Lt28at like me, you can't toggle anything but LTE. SInce the boot loader is locked it will give you the option to pick a different frequency, but will automatically revert back to LTE. Sucks.
The version i have only give me LTE data, or no data at all.
It is locked to rogers.
Can it be changed so i can use 3G only?

No. Your boot loader is most likely locked also. You can only choose LTE. The only other option is to find the APN setting for 3G and enter it in your mobile networks and choose it. It will only use 3G but your phone will always search for LTE by default. You will save some battery by going that route. I don't know what the 3G apn for Rogers would be, however or if there is one. AT&T has a separate apn for LTE and 3G. Maybe someone else here knows more...
Yea, i just found out this can not be unlock... thinking android can be unlock easily since my last 2 phones can do it.
I will find the 3g apn.
Hopefully someone can find a way to unlock it and use other rom..

[Q] Sporadic data connection

I just got a N7505 and with Rogers in Canada.
Data connection is sporadic. It will not work for few minutes occasionally and it is getting annoying.
I checked the APN settings and they are correct.
Any suggestions?

What u mean for "SPORADIC"? is it mean the data connection is on/off? how about your sim card line? is it 3G or 4G?

Sporadic as in, it sometimes works, and sometimes not.
Wifi is fine, but mobile data (4G/LTE) is not. With the same SIM card, mobile data (LTE) works fine on LG Optimus G.

In my case... my sim is 3G..but i've set in Mobile Network is "LTE/WCDMA/GSM (auto connect)" at first.. then i found out my data connection same with u.. sometimes on & off... telco company advise me change to "WCDMA/GSM (auto connect)". Since my operator line area still not available for LTE service. After i changed it.. then works fine.
U try to change first, then we'll see..is it ok or not.
Here in U.A.E i was facing the same issue as a work around i go to SETTING , MORE NETWORKS i then MOBILE NETWORKS and in NETWORK MODE manually select WCDMA/GSM as off course i wont able to get LTE but data speed is much better and no signal problem what so ever.
My carrier does not use WCDMA, just LTE/GSM.
Is there a code from dialpad to get into backend settings? For instance, with my other phone (Galaxy Note 1), I can dial *#*#4636#*#* to get into phone settings for more options for network connection.
