[Q] AT&T Model tethering? - LG Optimus G Pro

I just bought the Optimus G Pro today. It's a nice phone, but I'm having an issue getting tethering working.
I have tried Elixer2, Foxfi, and Estrong File Explorer. I get the same message every time: "Tethering is not allowed with downloaded apps".
AT&T has something running that is blocking it, but I'm not sure what app it is. I have disabled everything I thought I could.
Does anyone know of a working method for wirelessly tethering on this phone? If I root it, will the other methods work?
Aside from the phone being new, it's not a Galaxy, so there's literally no info anywhere about this.

Yup - just started happening to me too. I do not have the tmo tethering software on my phone at all either. Very strange.
I haven't been blocked but I use WiFi Tether from the Play Store. Try that and see if it works for you, it's free.

This recently started happening to me too, however upon some Google searching I came upon a quick and easy fix: Don't use the stock tether! and use this:
http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/downloads/list
The latest one uploaded on April 22 [wifi_tether_v3_1-beta14.apk] works perfectly for me hope this helps!

That's what I'm currently using but it still redirects me to the up sell page. However the up sell page does not come up under the Safari browser while it did whilst using chrome.
foxfi is another alternative which worked great

Yeah...T-Mobile takes advantage of chrome user agent string....that's how they know we tether. However once flagged, its very hard to get around it.

Wow. I guess all good things must come to an end because I loved the free tethering......it is my data and even with the use of tethering I still do not use up my 5 gigs THAT I PAY FOR! This is an interesting tactic for T-Mobile to use......hmmmmmm.....
Sent from my SGH-T989 using xda premium
I TOTALLY Agree!!! Why is anyone telling us how to use something we pay for. How we use our 2 or 5 or even 10 gigs of data should be OUR OWN BUSINESS!
T-Mobile's been piping lately how their going to crack down on folks who tether.
DAMN THEM!!!
Sent from my SGH-T989 using xda premium
You guys can still tether don't worry. Use different tethering alternatives and see which one works for y'all, i.e barnacle, foxfi, pdanet, easy tether, android wifi tether.
You could even try different browsers

Free your wifi hotspot from tmobiles lockout!!

after looking threw files on the new s3 i found a way to unlock your wifi from tmobile an there 14.99 fee for using data you already pay for
so to start you must be rooted
download Titanium Backup from market (free version is fine)
after you grant root access to Titanium Backup click all the oks an continue bottons uptop in the center click backup/restore button an scroll down till you see direct share manager 1.3.2click it then click backup (just incase somthign goes wrong) then go back an click Un-install in red it will ask are you sure just keep click yes it will ask two times then after that close out an you should be good to go
got this idea from a old s2 post just the file was a different name
Hope it works for everyone
Cool, did it, how can we test this?

Depends on the plan you got. Mine was included in the Unlimited Talk Plan.
im looking for a way to directly tether using the USB wire as speeds are much faster and more reliable.
Take this to general section.

Barnacle Wi-Fi tether

Hopefully someone can shed some light on this.
I used to use Barnacle on my old Photon, and had no issues with it. Now I'm running it on Lifeless ROM for our phones, and while it doesn't spit out any errors, it certainly isn't functioning the way it should.
Barnacle starts and runs perfectly, even shows " sharing your connection" with no errors at all, but still, no device is able to see or connect to the network. When searching for the Wi-Fi network on any other phone, laptop, etc, it's just not even there, like it doesn't exist.
If anyone is familiar with this app, or knows a way to get it functioning, I'd greatly appreciate any info.

Look up WIFI Tether on google play, there will be one called "WiFi Tether for Root Users" made by "Müller, Lemons, Buxton"
I've been using it for a while no issues so far.

WiFi teether owns when you have 4g
yep just got wifi tether for root, barnacle didn't work, and this one i see actually supports WPA as opposed to being limited to WEP, which caused issues with my linux box connecting to it.
Hopefully this is fixed with WPA, we'll find out
WiFi Tether stopped working for me. It does what's described in the first post; runs fine, no errors, and says it's tethering. It worked for about a month and now nothing.
Sent from my LG-LS970 using xda premium
I took the advice and tried Wi-Fi tether from the market. Basically does exactly what barnacle did, with a slight change. Now, other devices will see and connect to the Wi-Fi network, but will still not get internet access. Almost like the data service was blocked.

Except that when I look in the /system/app directory in the phone, I don't see a HotspotProvision.apk existing file there. So I don't know how Sprint does tethering.

I am not sure if the TreveMod is going to help. I have encountered your situation before where when you activate the wifi tether, everything looks good and dandy but the thing is it never broadcasts the SSID. I guess continue tweaking all the settings and let us know if you can get it working.

The wifi treve-mod is what bimmerdood has been testing with. This treve-mod doesn't seem to work on 2013 smartphones. It may appear that the mod works because it will attempt to start a wifi tether session on your phone but it doesn't broadcast the SSID of your phone to say your laptop or tablet to connect to.

How did you get this to work? I don't care if the SSID is broadcast or not, as long as it works still.
Morning. Rooted now so figure it's time to get on this.
As it seems others have done I want to try the wifi tether that I have on the N2 and see what happens.
I'll post updates as I get moving on this.

OK, using the Wifi Tether - TrevE Mod - Auto model....
Everything seems to work except setting ad-hoc mode. Data is working but wifi not visible.
Let me play around with it a little more.
I know it's been said already but it seems something - whether in wpa_supplicant or F/W - is blocking ad-hoc mode.
I'm going to keep poking around in the time I have left today.
Well, not sure if this is progress.
Device-Profile: Generic ICS/JB (wlan0)
Setup-Method: Netd
Starts with no errors but can't see it. Can't see a signal either in Wifi Analyzer.

ROOT Looking for wifi hotspot app for root

I had a galaxy s3 a while ago also rooted where i had used pdanet+ to create a hotspot without paying an arm and a leg to my carrier for the option. It had worked. Now that i have the g4 i want to do the same. when i try to use any app that says root wifi hotspot or whatever, they dont actually ask for root access nor do they work as intended. I was wondering if there was any other apps out there (for free this is the point) that i could use... Or if theres a method im neglecting to use to get this working.
