Don't want to Root anymore - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S III

Just got an S3 and i am pretty happy with it. Came from a Galaxy Nexus that i rooted and tried about every rom out there. I've had android phones since the Hero, back then rooting was almost a must, now i feel i am pretty happy with the phones stock. Anyways i am not wanting to root my s3 right now, as the last few phones i've had i always ended up wishing i never rooted. I would just get tired of always having something little wrong, then searching for something to fix it.
So what are your tips for a non rooted S3? certain things to disable? certain things to enable? i know you can still do some mods without rooting or at least you used to be able too in the 2.x days.

I just root and keep my phone stock. I don't go flash crazy anymore. Everything works, and I can use root apps, change a few things if needed, etc. Just because you rooted doesn't mean that you have to flash roms.

If there is an OTA can I install it with no problems then reroot after the update?

The latest version is MD4, I've been rooted for awhile but I think the process is the same. This is a great thread

I kinda feel the same way. I've been flash happy for years and I'm very happy with my stock s3. I just got it and will still root to use titanium and a couple other "musts" Is there a rom u guys would recommend that is closest to stock with only minor tweaks and under-the-hood stuff for battery life, etc.
Btw, this is my first time posting in the s3 forums so......Hello. I was very active in the evo 4g forums and a damn flashaholic.

I use this for a clean install

And this is a good stock rom

Good to see you. You will root after a week. I thought the same thing, then I found morphology. Happy flashing

my wife won't let me root her note 2. Lol. I set her up with nova launcher, and she can customize.
That said, if I were to stay stock (currently on M.O.A.R) I would root and then just download any stock rooted updates to my phone from the dev site when they came out and install them in custom recovery?

Rooted EVO, want to install Gingerbread... Basic ROM?

Alright, so I have honestly looked every where and read as much as I can.
I have a Rooted EVO with the stock ROM. I really want to update to Gingerbread but am very confused. I do not want to lose my rooted status and I do not want a ROM with a bunch of MODS. I just want a simple stock ROM with Gingerbread and Root access. Is this possible. I am confused by everything I read and do not want to brick my phone.
Will updating my phone with the OTA while Rooted ruin my phone? Will I be able to keep my root status?
Thanks!

On a Serious Note: Is The Search button not working?
On a Side Note: The Noob video needs to be played on login to all members that dont have a post count of at least 40. Even if they signed up before the rule.

There are two different rooted versions (with very minor modifications) of the new stock Gingerbread ROM (anything with the labeled "Sense" is based on HTC's ROM's, though some of them are based on ROM's from other phones), both on the first page of threads in this forum. Look for "4.22.651.2" in the thread subject--and yes, those will keep your phone rooted and S-OFF. I believe there's a third thread with a method of updating without a flash, and yet another with minor modifications to the stock ROM (the Titanium-X ROM).
By contrast, anything that says "AOSP" is based on the Android Open Source Project, and therefore quite different from an HTC ROM, though all functions work on many of them (but there is some debate on how well the various radios work on AOSP ROM's).
Okay maybe I had that coming or maybe I just didn't phrase the question right.
I looked at the page linked above before I posted this and I read it all and still was confused. I guess I am looking for the idiots guide to doing this. I don't feel confident enough on my own.
I DID read, ALOT, and I looked at all the posts that are suggested when posting a new thread.

They are referring to the fact that this thread is for development only. For future reference you can avoid being flamed by posting in the Q&A section.
Don't worry to much about these guys, they lurk and jump at the chance to show off their supremacy over noobs.

Alright will do!
I thought the Q&A was for other basic questions. My error.
Do you have the latest recovery installed of RA or Clockwork ?
I have clockwork i believe. I just did what I think is a nandroid backup, I went into recovery and did backup.
That's always smart so you are doing good so far. What you want to do now is download the zip file and place it on your SD card. You can download it directly on your phone if its easier for you (wifi recommended). Just follow the link posted by dodgerbluehero above and I would recommend starting with the odexed version.
Now go into recovery and choose flash from zip - then - choose zip on SD card. Navigate to the downloaded file and hit the power button to select it and again to confirm. It can take a few minutes to write the files so just leave it alone. It will tell you when it's done and you can reboot.
These instructions are from my memory but should be pretty close. You would typically want to wipe but the dev says not to worry about it if you are coming from a stock rom.
Give it a shot, you will be fine. Pm me if you have any questions because the mods will probably close this thread soon. Good luck!

what confuses me is where it says "firmware". Do I still have to install that or just the ROM??
The firmware is optional. You can install the rom and then decide if you want to flash the radio as well afterwards.
After you flash, the first boot sometimes takes a little while. Just let it do it's thing. You will be happily surprised how easy this actually is to do.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
but what benefit does it have? is the radio i have not as good?
Some people get better results with signal/3g speeds/wimax. The consensus seems to be that it varies by phone and area.
You can flash the rom without also flashing the radio and be just fine. Stop worrying and take the leap.
On the other hand this may not be for you.

Well I appreciate the time you spent explaining it. I just don't have the money to buy a new phone if I brick it. I rooted my phone on my own but never did any rom updates. I am going to try it once it downloads. Thank you again.
Oh one more thing, be sure that your phone has plenty of charge to make it through the flash and restart or that could lead to bricking your phone.

Agreed, at this point in the game, that's about the only way to brick your phone. It's one of my personal favorite little jokes when clockworkmod asks me are you sure? This cannot be undone! Darn near everything can be fixed thanks to this awesome community!

Thanks to everyone for keeping this going it has helped me so much. One quick question I have installed the ROM and the firmware but I see in the apps things like the blockbuster app and wanted to remove it. I cant seem to uninstall it so I thought it wasn't rooted properly. I tried using Unrevoked3 on it but it failed stating
Error: failed to get root. Is your firmware too new?
am I forgetting something simple or do I have to try and downgrade the firmware?

[Q] Best root method - a lot out there!

ok well I just picked up my new Epic after trading in my awesome (but heavy) Evo 4G. I had no issues rooting, flashing numerous rom's, bootloaders, etc. and now I'm in a new pool!
Since I've always trusted & used XDA for that device, I trust it for this new one as well. So I am looking at the dev sub cat and naturally on page1 there are do it this way, that way, etc. I used unrevoked which naturally won't work for this, so what's the easiest (and / or preferred method) for rooting this device?
I am writing this thread on a macbook, so have access to that as well as a VM of windows xp, win 7 and openSuse, so really any OS.
Looking forward to ROM flashing, testing, whatever direction the group goes, so just like the evo, want to follow the lead from you guys.
Looking forward to the new journey!
Thanks ...

zedomax or lost kernel would work.
best roms, i like barebone rom the most, but starburst or calks rom is good
If you want to root, use this! Easiest and doesn't add to your ODIN counter

When did this become the Development Question section? Oh wait... We don't have one of those... : facepalm:
Moving this to Q&A....
Removing hands from face, and ever so sorry jerdog for posting IMO a development question in the development forum. In the EVO forums on XDA, anything root related, how-to, mod's, rom's, etc. all fell under there.
Looking at the description of the Q&A it states "For all of your questions relating to the Sprint Epic 4G Touch", then why do I see questions there at all? It should be strictly links to downloads, kernels, themes, etc. but hey, that's just my .02
And ... since I am in the Q&A now, I have it rooted, I tried to restore my titanium backup which I purchased, it did install but not listed in the apps and there is an uninstall (no open) under the market, so that app is installed, just not sure why it's not able to run. I will install a terminal app this am and look for the app to try, but just curious. If TB doesn't run, what is the preferred way/app to remove sprint bloatware, etc.
Also, I assume CWM is the preferred recovery app, same with the EPIC?
I am going to start looking at ROM's, etc. so may have a few more q's down the road (putting them in the Q&A I assume)
Thanks ....
CWM is indeed the preferred recovery. I just started flashing ROM's myself, my favorite so far is the AOSPMod ROM, followed my Starburst.

[Q] Confused About Everything (Roots, ROMS, etc.)

Read the stickies in this forum and the rom descriptions.
You root because you want complete control over your technology. You root because of lackluster performance from stock software. You root because a company wants to limit you on the potential and fun you can have.
If you're not a technologist and have no desire to experiment and push the limits of your device then you shouldn't root in the first place.
You root your phone to over clock, under clock, under volt, themes, roms, radios, debloat, etc.

Go into the developer forum. Lots of good info there. I spent several months researching and reading everything to determine the best route for me and what I wanted to accomplish and what was important for me. The main and what I consider biggest reason for rooting is being able to back up any and all info and apps. The very first thing I would do after gaining root is make sure you have a custom recovery installed and do a full nandroid backup, either CWM touch or TWRP. Both of those are very easy to install, for the CWM just get Rom Manager from the play store and flash recovery from the app, or for TWRP get GooManager from the store and again flash from the app.
Second would be to install Titanium Backup and back up all your apps.
Once you've done both of those steps you should get Terminal Emulator from the store and read and follow these directions:
http://rootzwiki.com/topic/32397-tutorial-imei-backup-nv-with-qpst-us-variants/
This will be your 3rd backup and you should now be able to recover from any type of issue unless you completely brick your phone.
AFTER all this you can think about flashing a new rom, as for which one I would read the OP carefully and figure out what you are looking for. Do you want a cutting edge, completely up to date rom with jellybean, a 100% stable, bug free rom, a "pretty" rom, etc.
If you cant find anything in these threads after the help you've gotten here then it's hopeless.

Recommendation: root and ROM?

Hello all. I just ordered a Note 2 which I've yet to receive. My goal is to have a rooted, stable running phone. I've read through LOTS of threads and am trying to figure out where to start.
Is this the best method to root or should I not accept the latest update and go another method? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2118348
Should I flash a ROM or just run stock. If ROM, any recommendations?
Sorry for the noob questions...
First of all which Note 2 do you have? N7100 (international) or the carrier ones?
Thank you for your reply. I bought the Verizon model.
Sent from my GT-N8013 using Tapatalk 2
I would not recommend you to flash a rom if you need a stable phone.
My Note 2 is the only Android device I've owned that I didn't feel compelled to root.
My suggestion is that you run in bone stock a couple of weeks, and then see if you feel you really need to root.
Regards,
Dave

Flashed my Note 2 within 30 mins of buying it. Stable as a rock, no problems whatsoever.
Flashing roms doesn't lead to instability. Over tweaking perhaps does. Personally I like to run ad blockers, change my dpi and personalise my interface and remove bloatware...

I use monx's Rom.. you need to root first. Look up the necessary posts on rooting, read them then read them again. Backup. Read some more.... the process can seem intimidating at first, but you can get plenty of help on these forums. And go slowly and don't forget to backup frequently, so if anything goes wrong you can get back to a state where it was working.

yeah flashing means you will most likely void your warranty. not a smart act for a noob like me, at least!

Personally I use PhilZ Touch 3 Recovery, which works perfectly for me, the roms I've flashed and all the zip files I've used. Instructions for rooting are in post 2. It also works with exFat, so my 64GB SDcard has no problems.
I also use the Perseus kernel, which works well for me.
As was mentioned a couple of posts back, all this does indeed void your warranty. Again for me, this is a non-issue. I'm a brit, living in Indonesia, bought the phone in HK, so any warranty is pretty useless to me.
Have fun
I'm a new user as well and have been fiddling with my n1700 for a few weeks now. Personally I think I know what I'm doing but like the guy said you have to keep on reading on the forums. I flashed Android Revolution HD on my phone 2 days ago. Pretty happy with it. I might flash it again cause im tweaking my battery but it's a pretty stable rom.

Thnx! I looked at that thread and wonder what this means: "TL;DR: before flashing aside from known issues in the second post.?" Also, I looked through post 2 and didn't see where the install instructions were located. I see there are zip and tar files; I'm assuming the user can choose between flashing it with ODIN or CWM?

Changing the DPI on a stock based ROM takes a little work. Initially it's very easy. You edit the build.prop (I use ROM Toolbox Pro). Look for the two instances of ro.sf.lcd_density and change them to your desired DPI (I use 240) and reboot...that's it!! (if only is was that simple...)
Unfortunately not everything likes to play nice at 240DPI, especially the sammy keyboard, camera, multiwindow and dialer. Sooooo..... bala_gamer has made some mods of these apps that you can flash (see this post). I also use the Xposed Framework with the Xposed App Settings mod which allows you to set the DPI for individual apps (there are also many other useful apps that work with the Xposed Framework)...
I worked it all out from reading those threads, asking a few questions. Everything is pretty straightforward, just take your time, backup and make sure your battery is fairly well charged before you started flashing I love my N2, love being at 240DPI and everything set up the way I need it.

Have you compared against the following ROMs and noted any key differences?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1915036
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2060389
I use stock ROM + root + perseus kernel + XposedFramework.
I don't recommend stock based custom ROMs because most of the time the same features can be archieved with more flexibility using XposedFramework plugins.
As for AOSP-based ROMs such as CyanogenMod, I didn't try these on my Note 2 because it means losing many Samsung features that I like. Also, CyanogenMod for Note 2 is still in development.

First and foremost, make a TWRP backup! That way if you run into any complications, you have a solid fall back to start fresh; I try and make a backup at least once a week, in the event that something were to go wrong I don't lose too much information.
2) Never take an OTA (Over The Air) update, it'll reset your bootloader and you'll have to re-root your Note (I may be wrong, but I'm pretty sure that's what will happen from all I have read).
3) Check out the Verizon Note 4 Development page (http://forum.xda-developers.com/note-4-verizon/development) and take a look at the ROM's they have to offer. Any CyanogenMod ROM is going to be a custom ROM, so you'll probably want to look for ones built off the stock ROM from the Note 4 (Like JasmineROM). The main advantages of a custom ROM versus a modified stock ROM are the abilities to customize pretty much anything, and allows you to have a more customizable environment. The main downside, in my opinion, is the loss of the stock Samsung apps like the use of your S-Pen, Camera app, etc..
4) Do plenty of research before deciding on a ROM; I've found it particularly helpful to not only read the main post itself and see if the author has updated it recently, but to also jump to the last few pages to see if anyone is experiencing issues recently.
I'm not a developer or anything, and just like you it took me a good long while to finally root my Note. Just try and read as many articles as you can to make understanding some of the terms easier on yourself (like AOSP, Deodex, nandroid, and so on), and watch videos on YouTube! Best of luck.

Great advice,
So which ROM are you on? I'm currently on 5.0 1 I want to stick with a modified stock and want to upgrade (if there is something better). I'm terrified of losing root and not being able to get root again with all of the kingo and king root issues I've been Reading about.
I do have twrp and a backup.
I will check out the dev link you posted.

That was the biggest fear that I too had after rooting and unlocking my boot loader. Right now I'm running CyanogenMod 13, and I have to say I love it. Personally, the stock Touchwiz ROM is just too cutesy.
I'd suggest before going into flashing a new ROM, reboot into TWRP and familiarize yourself with the layout and functions (if you haven't had the chance yet). Then, as I suggested in my post above, just watch as many videos and read as many forum, blog, and article posts as you can.
As long as you follow the guide for the ROM you're flashing carefully, there isn't too much that can go wrong. It is hella nerve racking the first time you flash phone (or at least it was for me), but the first time you boot into your new custom ROM is a pretty awesome one.
P.S.,
If any of that didn't make any sense, I apologize. I've been at work since 6 this morning, and wrote it in snippets when I could since this afternoon. Best of luck!
