Hey,
got a Desire recently, which I basically love. The only thing that's giving me troubles is syncing Outlook (2007, will upgrade to 2010 shortly) contacts and calendar and the general way to use the Desire for legitimate PIM (especially calendar).
I used both an HTC Himalaya and Athena running Windows Mobile before, and the one thing that always worked smoothly was syncing with Outlook. Also, I really liked the way Outlook Mobile worked as a PIM solution (I used a today screen plug-in called Calendar+ I think to display my appointments for the next 10-14 days).
First of all, HTC Sync doesn't really work well for me. First time sync went just fine, but subsequent syncs put all my appointments of by one hour (I am in the GMT+1/CET time zone, that might have to do with it). This is especially annoying, as full-day appointments, birthdays, etc. are now displayed as lasting from 01.00 to 01.00 am.
Contacts get synced multiple times, so each phone contact is now available at least twice and as often as four or five times (all the contacts get linked into one by the Sense UI though).
Also, multiple groups are merged on subsequent syncs, for example if a contact is in the groups "Family" and "VIP" in Outlook, they are now in an Android-only "Family\;VIP" group.
Furthermore, Calendar (both from Android and HTC) really feely toy-ish, compared to Outlook Mobile. I was used to full-day-appointments being displayed as a general line of information with other appointments being display by time or length, including place and maybe conflicts with other appointments. The Android/HTC calendar just shows me a long list of things - I could use a spreadsheet or even a textfile if that's all I wanted or expected out of a calendar.
Is there an app, including widget(s) that is somewhat more like Outlook/Calendar+ on Windows Mobile?
Also, could my syncing troubles get solved if I decided to sync Outlook with Gmail/Google Calendar and sync the Desire with these (even though I'm not too keen to store these things in the Google Cloud).
Kind regards and thanks for any info anyone could provide!
Hi,
I have most of the sync working, but still get some odd things happen, like no GAL lookup and occasional duplicate entries. There is an app call Touchdown that is worth a look.
I am trying to get HTC to fix my issues, will let you know how I get on.
Peter
my HTC sync works fab!.. I have an Orange Uk .. slate colour !
I have office 2003 and at work 2007.. all works fine .
Contacts and calender works fine.. when you first sync you do get mutiple entry's for each user .. but the phone sorts this out for you ... re the mobile , facebook gmail etc
UK ist GMT, so maybe it's a bug in Sync that throws the appointments off by GMT±x hours?
It's OK that the contacts get merged, I jsut don't see it as desired behaviour to have every contact in my phone 8-10 times, even if the phone merges everything into one.
If I change any contact info on the phone and sync back into Outlook, who can guarantee the proper change is applied to the respective Outlook contact?
PIM - Personal Information Manager, what "smartphones" where soposed to be, what they used to be, what Android needs to become.
I CANNOT STRESS ENOUGH, the 3 most important features of any PIM device is:
1. UNIVERSAL SEARCH
Search of the entire phone (not the internet), search through all your personal data, thru the contacts, notes, calendar, spreadsheets, memos, to-do lists, word processing files, SMS/MMS, thru every native apps, thru every 3rd party app data, anything and everything on your phone (not the internet) quickly and completely the way Palm OS did. Fast information retrieval of your personal data and databases is the most important and single most useful thing on this planet as far as PIM’s are concerned. Not links to twitter, not cool little icon creation tools, not fun cutesy little play things, but real world useful things.
2. UNIVERSAL CUT/COPY & PASTE
The ability to copy an address or sentence out of a text message or email, (not the entire message, only the portion you need) and paste it into a contact, or paste it into a memo or task field, or it into Google maps. Or Copy part of a to-do list item and paste it into a spreadsheet, or copy a value out of a spreadsheet cell and paste it into an email etc.
3. DESKTOP APPLICATION to sync with.
A desktop application to sync with, to back up all your PIM information (contacts, calendar, to-do lists, memos, wordprocessing files, spreadsheet files etc, to your PC and vice/versa (without being forced to use Outlook). Not syncing to “the cloud”, I don’t want all my personal info spread out all over the internet for who knows who to snoop through. I want my personal info on my phone and my desktop PC only. A Desktop application to be able to do the bulk of your data entry from your PC then syncing it to your phone instead of having to type out and tons of personal data, such as useful formulas, extensive notes about people, long letters or ebooks you want to cut and paste into your desktop app so you can sync it to your phone so you can read it on the road at your leasure without trying to type all that data into your little touch screen pad. To be able to look up information and data stored on my phone without not having to wait on a slow connection as it stores and retrieves from the cloud. And to be able to look up the same information on my desktop app when I can’t find my phone. To backup my data or retrieve it without being dependant an internet connection. When I lose my old phone, I want to be able to sync the new phone to my Desktop application had have all my personal info and data files loaded on to my new phone putting me right back in business without skipping a beat.
Primary PIM Apps to be fully intergreated with each other on the phone and on the Desktop are:
* Calendar/Scheduler/with very flexible alarms (i.e. repeat every third Thursday etc.). Should have Day/Week/Month/Year views.
* Contacts/Addresses/People that will show the long names on the screen when you select it.
* To Do List (KISS applies here, just need to easily slide line items up and down on the priority list and/or give it a changeable priority level, and to be able to attach longer notes if need be)
* Memo/Notes/Flash Cards to store anything and everything you think to write down to take note down, any thought, idea, note, comment, list of items, what someone said – Any and all inputs instantly retrievable by the “Universal Search”.
* Media/Pictures/Video/Music sync between desktop and device.
* Third party attachment handler (to automatically sync spreadsheet files for instance).
Store, Retrieve, and Manage/Manipulate Personal Information, that’s what Personal Information Managers (PIMs) are for. Not for doing animated gifs or other cutesy time wasters.
This is something the Twit(ers) writing software today don’t understand, not everyone has the luxury of laying around drinking soda pop and twittering each other all day, most of us need to actually get some work done in the real world. To manage and access personal information as well as internet info.
I would have switched from Palm OS to iPhone a couple years ago but the iPhone had no universal search or universal copy/paste at the time which made the iPhone worthless game machine to me. So I stayed with Palm. Now that Palm OS is being replaced with WebOS, I see now that the “new blood” writing the new Palm WebOS software left out the 3 most important things, the very things that made Palm great to begin with. So I bought a Droid Incredible, it falls flat on it’s face as a PIM, now I am back to carrying two devices a Palm OS for an actual working PIM, and a Droid for all the other “cool” stuff. Don’t get me wrong, I love the Droid but it would be nice to get them back into one device again. The industry sometimes goes backwards instead of forwards. Now I see that Apple finally caught up to Palm by including a universal search and copy/paste into the iPhone finally, Android needs to catch up to Palm OS also, in a hurry, otherwise I may have to sidestep to an iphone when my one year contract is up.
PalmOS had a much more precise touch screen, all you had to do to select text was touch your fingernail, pen, or stylist to the letter you wanted to start with and drag to the end point to highlight the text you want, and then hit Menu/Copy. The new Johnny-come-lately touch screen phones do not have a precise way to select text directly, though the iPhone has come up with a good workaround for this, it’s not quite as fast and easy as the PalmOS but just as accurate at selecting only what you want, and it is universal just like the Palm.
If and when iambic ports Agendus to the Android OS it will be a great day for Android users, but the MOST IMPORTANT thing is we still need universal search & copy/paste across all 3-party applications. When I was a palm user I didn’t see the need for Agendus (a very robust PIM) because it seemed redundant on the Palm, but I could see the need for it on other platforms such as Windows devices, iPhone, BlackBerry etc. Now that I am a Droid user I see the need for Agendus for the Android. Agendus is starting to sound like a great Idea, a robust PIM application that can be ported to any new phone platform that comes out, that way you learn one app and keep it with you across platforms as the phone market keeps changing.
I am about to make my first foray into an Android device (Motorola Defy - Android 2.1 on the Telstra network in Australia) after years and years of faithful Symbian servitude. There is one little thing that is bugging me about Android so I thought I'd ask the experts as I've spent hours looking for an answer and still not coming up with a clear answer.
I understand I can turn off contact and calendar sync with Google quite easily but I'm unable to find anything to suggest how hard/easy it would be to sync my contacts and calendar (via USB, Bluetooth or WiFi - no real preference) to my local computer running Linux, specifically Ubuntu, rather than the cloud. I would prefer it sync to Evolution as this is what I have been using for years now with various forms of SyncML and Symbian phones (most recently syncevolution).
I would really prefer not to give over my hundreds of contacts and all my personal appointments to the cloud so I'm searching for a solution that doesn't involve customising the basic software too much for preference. It doesn't have to be a 24/7 sync, I'm currently just running it on an as required basis. I would even be willing to pay for the service providing it works.
Now I understand the whole "don't buy an Android phone if you don't want to use Google's services" and I've seen many posts like mine deteriorate into "why do you even want this?" so bearing in mind I've considered these arguments already is there anyone with any constructive suggestions?
This...?
https://android-client.forge.funambol.org/
I was looking at this sort of thing but couldn't understand, would this require the installation of my own funambol server on the computer here or would just installing the client on the phone allow it then to talk SyncML to something like hxxp://syncevolution.org/ (unable to post outside links yet sorry for the crap link)? Sorry if it seems noobish but want to confirm before spending money on something that may/may not suit my needs.
I'm not sure as I don't use it myself. I mentioned it cause you mentioned you've been using SyncML in the past so I think it may help...
Thanks for the pointer. I'm trying to work out if
Handset+SyncML client -> Syncevolution -> Evolution
or
Handset+SyncML client -> SyncML Server -> Syncevolution -> Evolution
is going to end up being the case. I guess it's one of those "just get it and see" things it would appear. I was just hoping this could be confirmed either way beforehand because a SyncML server is going to be a fair bit of work for just one phone and one instance of evolution.
I'm looking to get the Motorola Defy in the next week or so, so I will make sure I report back how it goes if no one else has any other information beforehand.
Just a quick follow up for anyone else looking into this. If you have the time I would whole heartedly suggest setting up your own personal funambol server as I couldn't find a reasonable solution to my problem.
As I don't have the time at this point to do that I have used iCal Import/Export in conjunction with Touch Calendar (I dislike the layout of the default calendar and Touch lets me repeat an event every X days which is good for shift workers like myself) for my calendar needs. I have been using the inbuilt Motorola Phone Portal over wifi to import/export vcards into the phone for my contacts.
So now I have my contacts and calendar in the phone and can manually import/export which is as close as I've gotten to syncing locally at this point. If I figure out anything else I'll post back again and I'm still open to other suggestions that are a bit simpler than a separate funambol server.
With only few hours of use, here are the visible improvements of S8500XPKG6 firmware over the previous S8500XPKG5:
The Good
1. No need to set debug level to "Low". Very rare crashes.
2. Kies can now detect phone firmware information
3. Apps can now be downloaded and installed via kies.
4. Now you can delete/replace your Samsung accounts (e-mail and pwd) from "Accounts" after signing in.
The Bad
1. "Add account" in Accounts take so loooong to respond (at times even stalls) when pressed to add new account.
2. Route 66. No option to sync license. Only option to buy (even if you already have an active license).
3. Search results in Samsung Apps is nearly invisible ; font size is very very small (same in KG5).
4. All games apps/games that did not play in KG5 don't also play in KG6 firmware (e.g Asphalt5, FinalStrike 3D, Turbo Granny, etc).
And The Ugly?
This is left for all who have used the new firmware version to share their experiences here .
I had to switch to "low" or google app and other applications would not open and the blue screen appeared.
The Facebook app is unstable in my case. If I send a status update works, but if I try to comment on my status or the status of someone the app crash . I can only write in status through the social hub, but there does not have all the features like the app.
Gmail only downloaded the first 50 messages stored in e-mail (which are 2007), I can not get recent messages.
The apps that I installed did not work.

All my e-mail accounts work fine. I only selected "Last week" in setting, so they retrieve only mails in the last one week. Maybe because I am using "socialhub premium" activated.
Some apps don't work but some do. Bruce Lee, NFS Shift, Diodict dictionaries, Al Jazeera Live, SPB TV, France 24 Live, etc, all worked.
Though I have not observed any crash or blue screen so far (on default debug level Middle), there may still be the need to set debug level to "Low" if you experience crashes.
For me in some aspects is better, but in other...I've just found out that i can not download apps at all via the samsung apps on the phone itself.Invalid pasword on both my samsung accaunts..I've written it several times and every time i am sure it's the right one.Whatever..
p.s. Do not ever put the dictionary widget on the homescreen. It will get your phone to endless bootcycle and you will have to flash again.

The @ live work, only gmail that does not receive new emails, only appear the first 50 of 2007 lol.
edit:
gmail worked
My phone always install apps/games in internal storage even though i've selected memory card in Installation location. Is it a bug in KG6 ?
stune also nt working
@hisee For me, STune is working, maybe your driver is too old.
@crionic I got that problem, too. But: you can solve it easily: it's the dictionary that tries to build a word from what you type. (it does that regardless whether globally disabled or not, so it's a bug). Longer tap on the key that shows your lang-code (eg: the globe with EN or whatever) and the options will open, disable text recognition, delete the already typed chars and re-enter your password. That's it.
@hany0u That the apps won't work is *not* a bug. Bada 2.0 is a new major version with API changes. Apps that work (several, eg: Spirit, TurboFly 3D, Caligo Chaser, EVAC, Radiant, Buka etc pp) simply never used the changed API. All others need to be updated, so I excpect them to work around September, when the final is coming out.
when i access to you tube or picasa through communities upload' my phone restaring. even i put debug level low. and also samsung application giving error "network not found" any solution. thanks for advance.
New font (Samsung Font) is a little too wide in other languages, than English. It could be good to left us choice which font we will use - old or new. Choco cookie is childish IMO.
Gps nt working . i am trying to do setting but its nt opeing ( *#4097*4097#)

While on default Android Email application, my e-mail account & pass were stolen !!
This problem may or may not be related to Epic 4G Touch or to Android, but it's the second time this has happened. See attached picture and try to find the problem !!! You guessed it, I moved from NY to Mexico in about 45 min !!!
After trying different Yahoo servers listed online, using the default Email application on my Epic 4G Touch (trying to get IMAP access instead of POP3) I noticed that my e-mail account & password were stolen. All my contacts received links to websites that side-loaded viruses into their computers.
I tried the following Yahoo servers, but I'm unable to pinpoint the faulty server address (most probably it's one of the servers without ssl requirement):
A)
incoming server = android.imap.mail.yahoo.com _ port = 143 (no ssl)
outgoing smtp server = smtp.mail.yahoo.com _ port = 465 (uses ssl)
B)
incoming server = imap.mail.yahoo.com _ port = 143 (no ssl)
outgoing smtp server = smtp.mail.yahoo.com _ port = 465 (uses ssl)
C)
incoming server = pop.mail.yahoo.com _ port = 995 (uses ssl)
outgoing smtp server = smtp.mail.yahoo.com _ port = 465 (uses ssl)
D)
incoming server = pop.mail.yahoo.com _ port = 143 (no ssl)
outgoing smtp server = smtp.mobile.mail.yahoo.com _ port = 587 (no ssl)
E)
incoming server = android.imap.mail.yahoo.com _ port = 993 (uses ssl)
outgoing smtp server = smtp.mobile.mail.yahoo.com _ port = 587 (no ssl)
Please note that I copied and pasted all the servers/ports as I found them listed online. I think that I tried all the combinations above, but I can't tell which one caused the problem.
EDIT 2/21/2012:
The way I personally think this has happened is that somewhere between my phone and the Yahoo server, there's some kind of automated program, sniffing for the e-mail/password combination when trying to connect WITHOUT using a secure SLL connection.
I checked my SENT folder from Yahoo and I can see all the e-mails going out, as if I had sent them myself. The above mentioned program red my entire contacts list, sent e-mails (in groups of 8 contacts at a time) in alphabetical order, until it reached the end of the list. After that it stopped. I was only able to figure this out about 30 minutes later, when I started receiving messages from "[email protected] <[email protected]>" because some e-mails were no longer valid.
- I'm fairly knowledgeable and I know my way around computers/electronics. I'm a cautious person that understands when and where an account can be hijacked... but this caught me by surprise. If this happened to me, it can easily happen to anyone... so keep your eyes open !!!
- my e-mail password is 10 characters long (upper & lower case letters + numbers + special characters) so brute force attacks are highly unlikely.
- It cannot be a hidden keyboard reader because I also have other e-mail accounts on this phone. The only hijacked account was the one that used the listed servers above.
- I was previously using Calkulin 2.8.1 ROM and I was testing various Yahoo servers (as listed above) when it first happened. I thought the custom ROM may have some security safeguards removed...
- I performed a complete ODIN re-install of stock ROM + Root, immediately after the first time my password was stolen.
- I was using the default Email client for approximately 2 weeks (with NO problems), until I decided to go back and see if Yahoo IMAP can be implemented ... and as soon as I started putting the servers listed above, it happened a second time... e-mail password stolen.
NOTES:
A) I have a feeling that using a connection WITHOUT SSL (as listed above) somehow exposed my account's name and password combination while trying to retrieve my emails. I thought I'm safe doing this because these are Yahoo servers, so I figured this cannot be the problem. I SHOULD HAVE KNOWN BETTER !!!
B) The first time it happened, I was using the phone's 3G connection and the second time I was on my WIFI at home, so the connection to the internet cannot be the problem
C) I don't have any applications installed that could possibly hijack my account. I have all the EL29 stock apps and the following downloaded straight from Market: Angry Birds, Barcode Scanner, Netflix, Speedtest and Viber. The only non-market item is AIO MOD (http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1390304)
Well, did any of you have this problem on any Android phone ??? Did it happen to you on Yahoo accounts or others ?

Sounds like someone hacked your account, but I don't see how this has anything to do with Android.
You could have an app that's reading keystrokes and/personal data. You can try doing a virus scan with avg free (uninstall it afterwards if you don't want to keep it.)
If your password was easy to guess a bruteforce could've easily gotten it. Also do a virus scan on your pc.

Honestly? I'm sure yahoo is to blame...especially considering they've made their email act quirky on a lot of smartphones when not using the ymail app, I don't trust them.

You may be right. It probably doesn't have anything to do with Android or the default Email application. I may be the only one that has had this problem.
The only part that I am 100 % sure about, is that it happened while setting up the servers for Yahoo on my E4GT, in the default Email application. This is the second time it has happened to me, while performing identical steps.

I will run some anti-viruses, but from what I was reading online, they seem to be pretty useless on Android phones.
I will post my results.
I had the same thing happen to me with gmail last year. I installed a free live wallpaper from the market, and 5 mind later my account was phished and (tried) to mass email all my contacts. Showed me logged in from different countries etc. luckily google email caught it and suspended the account to stop it.
I had to change my password.

Update:
I installed 3 antiviruses (Avast, Lookout and AVG Antivirus) and none of them found any problems, but I'm not surprised by this.
I was checking the Avast Firewall features and in the list I found 4 applications grouped together (I can't seem to find any references to what they perform exactly):
- SNSAccountFb
- SNSAccountLi
- SNSAccountTw
- SNS disclaimer
These applications appear legitimate (having a disclaimer installed is probably signaling a safe app) but I can't find any information about what it does.
Any help would be greatly appreciated... +1
Social network service
facebook and twitter
I don't know what li stands for. Those can be safely renamed to like ...apk.bak or whatever, if you don't use the built in widget crap for that stuff. I would be careful when installing new apps next time. I'd probably odin the phone back to stock rooted with full data wipe. Not the nodata choice. I'd also consider using a different email client. I don't know how good k9 is but people like it. I'd also get a firewall/whitelist/blacklist app that you can set up and choose what apps and services get out on the internet.

Those are all legit Samsung apps.
I have been checking my yahoo account on phones for years first blackberry then android with no issues. Its likely a password issue. Try something 9 or more characters not from the dictionary or your life. Using a phrase like yahoosucks but making it [email protected] makes it tougher to crack. I probably need to update some of my passwords too.
I have to say THANK YOU to all that contributed to my thread, trying to help solve this mystery.

This is a shot in the dark here, but did you have your yahoo account info on any past devices you no longer own? I had one of those MID tablets direct from China that I sold on craigslist. I did not include a SD card, and did 2 or 3 data wipes before selling it, and Christmas day I start getting emails thanking me for my Amazon app store purchases. Thankfully they were all free apps, I'm sure it was completely innocent - probably just some kid who got it for Christmas (poor kid, that thing was awful) but possibly something similar happened here with less innocent results?

I see what you mean ... but no, I didn't have anything similar to your situation. The only device I had my e-mail retrieved from was a dumb phone (Blackberry 8350i) which I still own (I'm using it for morning alarm).

I recently had some troubles with password theft in the email I used in the default mail program. I don't have Yahoo, but I use my ISP email service Cox. I had it happen twice as well, and didn't find any detectable issues on antivirus programs. I've been using MIUI ROM for the last few weeks and have not had any troubles since. I've never had a password problem before this happened. I doubt it's my phone ROM, I was using calks EL29 and his stuff has always been great. I'm not aware of having any weird free apps either, but who knows. Perhaps something blindly gained root access or something.

I think Yahoo's servers are being hacked somehow. I know three people that were hacked on Sunday at exactly the same time.
Yahoo has added a new Second Sign On Verification option you ought to turn on.
I am pretty sure this is a yahoo issue. My sister's account was hacked at 4 am this morning and she doesn't have an android device. She uses her pc. This is the second time this has happened to yahoo users that I know of.
because i'm not allowd to post in the developers forum aosp thread, I cannot post my suggestions for development there.
That is why i try to do it here, maybe someone can post them in de developers thread?
I installed aosp yesterday and it looks great so far. Despite some minor incidents it is working very well on my gio.
However, I experienced some difficulties which I believe they can be improved:
1. Sync Agenda:
I added mail accounts (2x gmail, 1x exchange) and for all accounts the agenda should be synchronised.
My mail accounts are working properly, but the agenda data does not get imported by my phone right now.
Also, when i Look in the agenda app, my exchange account is not mentioned. It says: no agenda available, which is not right.
2. top bar home screen
On my stock rom, the first thing I did, was removing the google search bar on the top of the screen. Once I did that, I could place the simple calender widget over there. Now in AOSP, that is not possible anymore because the top of the screen is not available to place widgets and somehow seems to be the private domain of the 'remove app/widget from homescreen' function.
For me, that is really annoying. I would prefer the 'old' remove function, which would appear on the bottom of the screen.
3. setting data limits / clock alarm
When I tried to set the data limits or the alarm for today, I had to scroll to the right time. It would be alot easier and faster to show a keyboard / keypad to enter the right numbers. When setting the data limits I have to scroll from 5 gb to 50 mb which took really a long time. It was only after I finished that I discovered I could drag te bars (which would already be an improvement).
4. sim toolkit not shown
My sim toolkit is not shown (not in the app list or in the settings menu, where it should be somehow). I need this toolkit to get 3g internet working on my phone. So far, I've created a new APN using all the right and giving settings, but it is not working so far. This makes me believe I still have to do something with the sim toolkit.
5. showing cpu usage freezes my phone
I enabled the show cpu usage setting. After this, I cannot use my phone anymore, it freezes. I do not know how I can go back now and disable the setting. I tried to call myself. My phone rings, but I do not see anything, only a black screen where the cpu usage is shown.
6. wifi switching on takes a long time
it takes quiet a time before my wifi is switched on and connected. It is (much) slower than it was on my 2.3.6 stock rom.
7. importing contacts
i noticed when importing my contacts from my .vcf file that I had to connect my contacts to either one of my mail accounts whether it was gmail of my exchange (work) account. I did not want to connect my contacts with any account (also because my contacts are both private and work), but that was impossible. It would be nice to have this fixed in a future release.
